Great Album. I was dating my current wife in late 1997 when she surprised me with a private table dance in my living room. Needless to say, that song was played at our wedding and to this day holds a memory that I will never forget close to my heart and somewhere....

Transformative and Moving.......2007-02-27

My musical tastes are quite eclectic to say the least. I move from Bach to Rock and all places in between as long as its quality. However, whenever I listen to "back 2 good", I feel like I am actually transported into the body of a person who has deep pain and sorrow. This song continues to have an effect on me over 10 years later from the first time I heard it. Most of the other songs are great for the unusual mix of depth and pop appeal. This album is highly recommended!

I just bought this yesterday. Very impressive vocals. This album will keep your head moving and fingers tapping the whole time- lots of energy. I like how it doesnt seem like they are trying to copy the trends.

MB20 Is Someone Like You.......2006-10-03

Southern rock band: Matchbox 20 made their Mainstream debut with YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU. The album was released in late 1996, and it was a major breakthrough in the sound of popular rock. Vocalist Rob Thomas fronted the rhythm section with gritty and yet very melodic lines. His sound and style is what would have made or broke the band. Luckily, Thomas' sound was a style people liked and were soon in demand for. Single after single, and performance after performance, the public could not get enough of the band's southern gritty rock. It is quite clear that Thomas' parts are the foundation to the band, and all the other instruments' parts are written to fit his sound. The end result is a standard I-IV-V progression with a passing chord thrown in here and there, but the guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards are in sync with each other almost perfectly. Dynamics are a big trait with this group, and the musicians know how to use this aspect just right for their pieces. YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU is a good record and one for any Matchbox 20 fan.

Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15

I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.

My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.

I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!

Delightful.......2006-06-12

The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.

If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)

well, it looks like the NME got something right.......2007-06-29

I think this album, and this band, are fantastic. They are the perfect mix of dancy, girly, and British-ness. Having heard a bunch of the singles, I was not disappointed in this at all. This band mixes all sorts of genres together, from post-punk to disco to britpop to 60s girl groups, etc. They mix all these together to make something that works QUITE well in both studio and live setting.

The singles on this LP are all great: once and never again, giddy stratospheres, and separated by motorways. However, I think the songs "Lust in the Movies" and "You Could have Both" are better than any of those songs. I think that is a rarity these days in our Ipod / Youtube music business.

By the way, this band was GREAT at the Subterranean in Chicago. Their singer is a total fox. I eagerly await something else from this band and hope they are not a Northern English amalgamation of some fads. It's really a shame that Jarvis Cocker does not like the singer's voice. I love it...she is one of the few singer currently that sounds better live than on vinyl (or CD).

For once, the hype is deserved........2007-06-09

The Long Blondes' Someone To Drive You Home is consistently catchy and enjoyable all the way through. "Lust In The Movies" starts it off with a kick and things don't let up until the CD ends. The four singles are:

1. Once And Never Again
2. Giddy Stratospheres
3. Separated By Motorways
4. Weekend Without Makeup

These four songs were all previously available on UK singles. The versions on Someone To Drive You Home are all rerecorded. This may come as a frustration to people who fell for the original single versions (as I did). It doesn't take long to appreciate these new versions, though. Either way, the songs are catchy and fun to sing along with. The music is poppy, but there's a lyrical dark streak lurking just beneath the surface.

This CD would be worth it for those four songs alone. My personal favorite song isn't one of the singles, though; it's "You Could Have Both", which features male and female voices singing simultaneously. It's got a very Pulp-y sound to it. (It's also nice to hear a reference to The Apartment in a pop song.) The remaining songs are all highly enjoyable, so what we're left with is a rarity in modern music...a CD that is solid all the way through without any of the duds and throw-away tracks that plague so many releases these days.

For once, the hype is deserved.

The last great album I discovered in 2006.......2007-06-07

This was not only the last great album I discovered in 2006 but it turned out also to be one of the best. This album is not widely known in the US due to it still not being available as anything other than an import. It is not even available on iTunes and other music download services. Hopefully 2007 will see a correction. I have to confess to not knowing a whole lot about the band. Most of the songs are credited to guitarist Dorian Cox and The Long Blondes, which probably means he writes the songs, presents them to the band, and they all hash out the final form. What is surprising about this is that the band has a distinctly feminist slant on things. They seem in many ways to be the English answer to the Riot Girl bands in the U.S. You could easily do a triple bill of Le Tigre, Sleater-Kinney (alas, if only they were still together), and The Long Blondes and have no clash of values or viewpoint. The band has much of the same brassiness of Third Wave inspired feminist rock, yet the songs are written by a guy. Well, perhaps not so bizarre. The turning point in strongly empowered female characters on TV occurred with BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, created by a male feminist, Joss Whedon. So why can't a guy write songs that represent a female take on things?

If Dorian Cox writes the songs, Kate Jackson sells them. And man, does she ever sell them. With this album she instantly joins the ranks of the most compelling female frontwomen in rock. She has a great voice, with plenty of power when she needs it, but capable of subtlety as well. They have her voice far forward in the mix, where it belongs. I love the way she manages to do so many things vocally in "Heaven Help the New Girl," and does them all well. If you compare her with, say, Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kate doesn't have all the tricks that Karen can pull off, but she has a much more powerful voice and a wider effective range.

But what really puts this band over the top for me is not just that they come with a great set of well-written songs and a phenomenal singer to sing them, but that the Long Blondes are a great band. Screech Louder on drums, Emma Chaplain on guitar (and back up vocals), Reenie Delaney on bass (how refreshing to have a chick on guitar and a guy on bass for a change), and Cox on lead guitar are a tremendously tight, inventive, and skilled. Sometimes when you have someone as good as Kate Jackson, there is a talent gap between singer and band, but that certainly is not the case here. This truly is a band, with everyone contributing enormously to the final project.

The highpoint of the album for me is "Weekend without Makeup," in which a woman chronicles how stale her relationship has grown. It is a subject that has been dealt with in countless songs, but it seems so fresh here and the notion of defining a weekend by the fact that she doesn't need to put on any make up really speaks volumes. All in all, though, the album has a number of really strong cuts. "Lust in the Movies," "Once and Never Again" (in which the singer tells a 19-year-old that she really doesn't need a boyfriend but should instead focus on life without the need of one), "Giddy Stratospheres," "In the Company of Women," "Separated by Motorways," and "Heaven Help the New Girl." The album may fade ever so slightly by the end, but these days most bands put their strongest material in the first two-thirds of the disc.

I do want to quibble with a criticism that the previous reviewer made of the album. He or she indicated that this album is "derivative." This is a criticism that is frequently made by people of one album or artist or another. But I have to confess that it is a criticism I've never been able to make any sense of. There are two sides to my perplexity, one general and one specific. Take the specific first, I listened to this album multiple times and not once thought "Wow, this is derivative." Of course there are a host of moments where the album recalls other performers. At various points the band reminds me of outfits as diverse as the Smiths, Pulp, Joy Division, and Blondie, but sometimes even some sixties girl groups. But I absolutely promise any prospective listener: you will not listen to this and think that they are ripping off any other bands' riffs. They certainly are not more "derivative" than any other band at work today. Which leads to the more general side of my perplexity: given the fact that we now have over fifty years of rock and roll informing any rock album today, how is it possible for any band to be anything other than derivative? Even the Beatles were derivative, aping a host of American R&B bands and artists. Later they came under the spell of Bob Dylan, who was himself inspired by a score of American folk, blues, and rock performers. Everyone borrows from everyone else. The question is not whether something is "derivative" but whether their particular derivation is any good. And this stuff here is dynamite. If it were boring, that would be another matter. I really don't intend to jump all over the previous reviewer. Honest, I don't. But this is an instance of aiming a largely irrelevant criticism at an absolutely first rate band. At least he and I can fully agree on one thing: this is one of the best albums of 2006.

Have to buy it all over again........2007-06-07

First Jarvis Cocker's solo CD and now Kate Jackson's band? What is with these Sheffield groups and bonus stuff on domestic releases? Well, I bought this in January thereabouts on the strength of their reviews in the British rags. If you like Alex Turner's ilk, you'll like this. The music is very similar except with Nico/Justine Frischmann (hence a lot of Elastica comparisons, mostly bad, sad to say as I like both groups) vocals. The lyrical content is the same. All in all, if the journos aren't grouping the two in with Jarvis for "The Sheffield Sound," give it time.

Will it be big here? Doubtful. It, like so many previous bands (the Kinks, the Jam, Blur) is way too English and unless you're an Anglophile, it won't be very interesting. If you are though, have a butcher's.

Disappointing transfer to CD.......2007-07-01

I own both of these albums on vinyl. Since they were acquired in the 1960's, they show some signs of age and I had hoped that modern audio transfer technology might even improve the original recordings; that is certainly not the case. The Make Someone Happy tracks are the worst--distortion and fuzziness make some tracks almost unpleasant. There just doesn't seem to have been much attention paid to the final product in the transfer process. That's a shame, because We Five has always been one of my favorite groups from that era, and they didn't leave behind a lot of material. I'm sure someone could do a better job on re-mastering, but I'm not optimistic because the market may not be there.

2 great albums for the price of 1 CD........2007-03-30

After playing my vinyl copies of We Five I decided to check Amazon to see if they might be available on CD. I was pleasantly surprised to find that both albums were on 1 CD and at a price lower than many single CD's.

You Were on My Mind is a great album. With the exception of a couple songs--particularly Love me Not Tomorrow (first cut), which sounds amateurish and has a grating lead vocal--the choices of material, the arrangements and the performances are fresh and such a pleasure to listen to over and over, which my girlfriends and I did in the late 60's and early 70's. When I found it on CD on Amazon.com I was really excited. I had never heard or heard of the Make Someone Happy album. There are a few songs up to the standard set in the first release, but the sequel is not the equal. But, since they are both on the same CD it's yours anyway.
A great listen and a great memory.

An incredible voice with good arrangements .......2006-12-24

I listen to this CD more than any other. Although this is not one of the better known 60's recordings; it offers one of the "best" voices I've ever heard. I never tire of Beverly Bivens. How many voices can one honestly say that of? If you liked her strong, rich delivery in "You Were On My Mind", you'll love it in "If I Were Alone." Her tonal range (reportedly low tenor -> high suprano) and style difference between "High Flyin Bird" and "Tonight" is impressive; but, her ability to "range" from "richness" to brilliant clarity, has not, in my experience, been equaled. Couple this with "feeling" and "articulation", and you have a voice that's consistently interesting and pleasing. A lot of female voices came out of the sixties, and many think none were better than Beverly Bivens. To me, the others weren't even close.

This CD offers: Foke Rock, Blues, Show Tunes, Standards and a couple "Quirkies." The arrangements are nicely done. Although the re-mastering is not what it could be; the CD is well worth owning.

BEV BIVENS - simply the best.......2006-12-04

The first WE FIVE album is now 40 years old. It remains the best album of its genre still to this day. Bev Bivens singing is a gift to all of those who have become long-time addicts of this album. The album is a masterpiece that still brings chills when those haunting Broadway show tunes play. I wonder if she ever realized just how good she was?

Frontman Isaac Brock's claim that he's being stalked by his own alter ego was not the first bit of evidence that Modest Mouse isn't your usual pop band. Witness the entirety of this 1996 indie debut from the Washington trio that inspired a major-label bidding war. This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About finds Brock cruising with cohorts Eric Judy and Jeremiah Green (plus an occasional cellist) through a landscape of intoxicatingly original lo-fi tunes. This is, overall, my favorite Mouse album. The first three tracks work together so well, with the looping meandering guitar riffs and the lyrics that sound like the life of every disenchanted teenager or young adult that's ever lived. As always with Mouse there are some tracks that get a little noisy or sound a little incomplete, but that's part of the charm. Brock doesn't write consistently perfect songs, but he writes so many perfect songs that it's almost a relief to realize that he's not flawless. Perhaps the most gifted lyricist in alternative rock, some of the wordplay is pure poetry.

I am a huge modest mouse fan. but i know this record is not for everyone.
please start with the new modest mouse this stuff might turn you off to them at first listen. I love this CD! it has so many great qualities that dont show up on other modest mouse records.

I really enjoy the overall dry twangyness in this album. The opening tracks are instant indie/alternative classics. Very quirky, laid back material that could easily please any Modest Mouse fan. I also recommend Lonesome Crowded West for more wonderful work.

Here is what I have to say: This is my favorite Modest Mouse album. This album captures to total perfection what it feels like to be sad and cold but at the same time filled with a sweet appreciation for your own existence. There is such a fantastic reality to be found here. This will always be at the top for me. There is a good section of my life in which this is the definitive soundtrack. The music can be so bare but masterfull it makes you want to scream. Like living in a sparse cold room that you still find beautiful. If you want good music then, here, take this.

Fantastic album.......2007-01-21

As much as I wanted to diss them for being too heavily indebted to the Pixies, I could not resist the magnificence of this album. It blew me away when I first heard it, and it continues to.

Modest Mouse has released a slew of great albums, so I can't say this is my favorite, but it might be....

Not as good as her first album........2007-07-21

I saw Sophie Milman at "Jazz Alley", in Seattle a few months ago and loved her. I had to buy her first album, when I was there. I was that impressed. She played a lot of songs from that album and a few songs from this one (which I enjoyed), but I think, as a whole, this album is slightly less impressive.

I was a little disappointed with her rendition of "Fever". My favorite version is Peggy Lee's, so that's a little tough to match.

This is a fine album, though and I recomend buying it.

Turn off your mind relax and float downstream. Entertainment for the mentaly enhanced. The words describe the words as you find a dark room and a few hours with the phone unplugged and doors locked. The fine woven gears of Firesign theatre transport you to forbidden places and celestial visons.

I remember listening to "Waiting for the Electrician" when it came out. Earphones. Sunshine LSD. What's not to like. I lost my vinyl of all the Firesign guys and got replacements recently. Listening 38 years later, it has excatly the same effect. Must be flashbacks. Satire is beyond time. Each self standing one act play defines the language of the piece so that the 60's and 70's lingua via is accessible. The title auditory show is more powerful now than then because they got it all right.

Best Firesign performance ever BUT BEWARE..........2006-04-13

For those of you who know and loved this originally as an LP, you will be disappointed to learn that sony messed up the remix BIG TIME by deleting important dialog at the beginning of the second side of the album (of course, on the cd it would be the second segment). The beginning of the second side IS CRITICAL to the subject of the performance and as best as I can recall, should have begun something like this:

"Welcome to side 4. Please follow along as we learn 3 new words in Turkish.
Towel, Bath, Border...may I see your passport please..." ...
(someone could please tweak this for I know this is not EXACTLY the dialog).

Anyway, you get the idea. The beginning is suppose to be as if you were listening to one of those "Berlitz" language records. Just wish/ hope sony would rectify this REAL SOON!

Oh - it's the Ice Show!

The spy has been in deep cover behind the Iron Curtain. He has just received his hurried direction in clipped sentences, has checked into the Hotel Kafka, and has been intercepted, probed, scoffed at, ignored, and wiretapped.

Then for no reason at all, he goes through a door, and is on the ice at the Berlibber Ice Palatz, to see the Gunatzis Brothers, Hans and Junni, shoot it out with weapons of increasing caliber and fierceness...

It was their first album, and thus one of their more transparent. But side two (sorry, Side Five), remains a masterpiece.

This is one, if not my favorite of the Firesign I've listened to. If you like history you'll love this one. And if you don't, no problem, you'll still get a kick out of it. Lots of great lines, word play and sound effects. A must have!

Just an EXCELLENT Album!.......2007-06-19

I'm ashamed of myself for taking nearly 2 years to pick up Someone in Control. Trapt's sophomore offering does anything but slump. Just a jam-packed disc of great music.

I always like to count how many songs I'm into right after buying a CD, as to let myself know whether I just wasted my money. SiC, which features 11 tracks, features EIGHT that I'm already hooked on, and I haven't even broken the CD in all the way! It's THAT good. If you loved their eponymous album, add this one to your collection.

No Me Gusta!.......2007-06-15

I liked their debut far better than this CD. This CD will be featured soon in a used store near you. Nothing really grabs you like their last CD. It's nothing terrible, I just wouldn't find myself thinking, "Gosh, I'd love to listen to Someone in Control right now." I haven't touched it for months, almost forgot I had it. Oh well, maybe next time. Anyone want a cheap used CD? It's yours for about $2.99 plus shipping. Just kidding, I'm probably not supposed to advertise on a review, ha ha.

Barely half as good as their debut........2007-04-13

I give it 2.5 stars. There just wasn't anything on here to keep me coming back. Maybe once every couple years I'll say, "I feel like listening to Trapt" and I'll give it one spin, but there is so much more out there that is better. I really liked the debut, but talk about sophomore slump here. They better get their acts together.

I keep coming back to this........2007-02-22

I really loved the well-known singles from their first album. I think those singles are superior to the songs on this album. However, with all of the music in my library, I keep coming back to this one. It's been a staple in my car for a year and frequently finds its way back onto my MP3 player. Pretty well all of the songs have grown on me and I just have to highly recommend it, even if it's not quite up to the level of what their first stuff was.

Trapt's 'Coming Of Age' Third Release.......2006-11-15

This is the follow up to the 2002 release. This album is exceptional and the best the North Californian young band has come up with so-far. With only one listen of 'Someone In Control' I was hooked. Maybe initially it was the CD artwork that pictured a working class man who seemed to have it all, on his bed with his head in his hands. For me this picture could have depicted me. How many times have we felt not in control of our lives, of our family, of our work? This album was made for the working man and woman and I will explain why.

It is quite unique to find an album with the first 3 songs pretty much the best in the album. 'Disconnected' deals with how each of us can feel apart, out of touch with our loved one's, our friends and colleagues. The lyrics are sung gracefully and full of meaning with the abtuse deep rock riffs in the background. 'Waiting' and 'Victim' are songs for the working man/woman. The lyrics depict a person who falls victim to a unfeeling/uncaring working society.

Another great song is 'Lost Realist' that is a song based on our morals and how they stand up to today's reality. Are we going to stand by our morals or succumb to the flavour of the month? This song asks the listener to think and reflect on what we term 'reality'.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable album with a great message of hope and reflection within its lyrics and Trapt have earned my respect in their approach. Through the on the road experience they are trying to impart what they have shared and learned to their fans. There are no mindless lyrics here. This album is great. Nothing is skin deep.

This CD is for any rock fan and especially for die hard Trapt fans.

Russell Watson's story is a classic rags-to-riches fairy tale: The former welder, after years of singing in pubs and clubs, traveled from Salford, his hometown, to London. He turned up unannounced at the Decca offices and was promptly signed up by one of the most important classical labels in the world. Vocal coaching followed, as did a number of successful live appearances supporting Cliff Richard. Now, we have this recital CD, which explores a wide range of musical styles. Watson's Italian is a little ponderous in tracks such as "Amor Ti Vieta," but this is more than offset by his captivating and utterly natural-sounding tenor voice. The inevitable popular arias are here, namely "La Donna è Mobile" and "Nessun Dorma," sung with a refreshing and youthful vitality. Pop tracks, including Ultravox's classic 1980s hit "Vienna" and a witty cover version of "Barcelona" sung with former Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder, sit comfortably on the disc. Watson performs them with integrity, not simply paying lip service to the music of his generation. Watson has the potential to do for classical music what Jamie Oliver has done for cookery, and there are few people who won't find this debut CD appealing. --Rebecca Agnew

Unsure.......2006-01-07

I'm glad that musical artists besides opera singers are encouraging the art of opera. I also like some of his more upbeat selections as well. In my opinion though, I couldn't listen to his CD for very long. A couple of his arias sounded a bit splatty at times, and back in the throat at others. I don't claim to know everything about opera, I'm only in highschool, but his sound seemed quite pushed in places.
When all is said and done,however, I hope more people will come to know and love opera through his music.

I hesitate to add my two cents where others have commented in such number. Still, there are a couple of observations I'd like to pass along, hoping they provide further insight into the phenomenon of Russell Watson and his singing.

First of all, I bought this CD never having heard of Mr. Watson--I just liked the looks of it and thought I'd give it a try. So my perception was based solely on what the CD offered. And I liked it! Both the first time and the next several times. (If I want to get analytical, I can find flaws here and there, but somehow I always enjoy hearing it. Period.)

Why do I like it? For a starter, the performances are musical, interesting, exciting, and aesthetically appealing--and that's my first test of quality. (What good is the greatest, most refined, rendition if you find your attention wandering?) Next, I think Watson's musical instincts (and those of whoever else assisted in creating this CD) are pretty much dead-on. There isn't one track I don't like, though some are clearly my favorites.

OK, the operatic bits don't sound like Pavarotti or Domingo, whom I also love very much. So what? Who says there has to be only one way to do an aria? This music is good enough to support a variety of interpretations. (Now if I could only afford one CD, I'd have to be more demanding.)

This is music for regular people, not necessarily for the elite, and I'm enough of a musical democrat to welcome it. If Watson didn't emerge from a high-class musical background, but still found his way to this music, I say more power to him! He must have an inborn feeling for it, and enough of a voice to perform it convincingly.

We've known a few other tenors from humble musical settings who've risen to popular acclaim (e.g., Mario Lanza). They happen to hear some fine tenor singing and find they can imitate it, and not too badly. With a little encouragement they keep at it, take a few lessons, and soon they're on their way. Where they go from there depends on talent, luck, and choices. I don't know where Watson's career will go in the long run, but I like this initial CD (and the two or three following it).

One concern I felt in listening to "The Voice" was for the voice itself. It seemed to me that Watson might have been forcing it too much, in heroically belting out those high notes. From what I now read, that concern was well founded, for Mr. Watson has had to undergo throat surgery. I hope his recuperated voice will retain the excitement and charm we have grown accustomed to and will serve him (and us) for many years.

A wonderful voice.......2005-05-28

I'd just like to say that while most of the opera purist lot criticize his "untrained voice", they are completely neglecting to say that the beauty of his voice is completely NATURAl. He is a man with a naturally beautiful voice, not one worked on for dozens of years in a conservatorium. Personally, that in itself is commendable. Yes, his pronunciation is not exactly perfect, but I think that this adds to his charm - how his gift (and yes, it is a gift) to him from welding to living out his dream.

Opera purists are a dying race. Making opera accessible to other people is not a crime. I have been brought up in a house filled with music, quite a lot of opera. And I do not think that making opera more accessible is a bad thing. Bringing a more youthful image to opera is a very positive thing. We are seeing a whole generation of artists with wonderful voices, ridding opera of its middle aged image.

Bravo, Russell! You're doing a great job.

PS: Opera purist, I can assure you Russell does not spend a sleepless night on account of your whining. So I suggest you learn to deal with the new youth of opera.

Opera for the Masses.......2005-04-25

Talented Watson brings a youthful, casual elegance to opera which will appeal to opera lovers and novices alike.

Some critics are hard on him for pandering to the pop aspects of modern operatics, but I wouldn't call him a sell out at all, as he certainly has the vocal skills to back up his commercial appeal.

One listen to the voice and it will offer you a true appreciation for this hybrid singer. I call him a hybrid singer because he is one of the new generation singers that have the range to sing beatiful, classical pieces as well as pop songs. Russell has the looks of a boy band star but he chose, instead, to follow his heart and bring beautiful, european music to the world's attention. While I have heard comparisons to Josh Groban let me just set the record straight. Russell Watson is the original while Josh Groban, who needs a good barber, is the copy. Russell's first album, the voice, was released in April 2001. Josh Groban's cd was released in May 2002. Both singers have worked with some of the same producers but there is no true comparison when you hear the range and beauty of Russell's voice. He truly could have been an opera singer and has performed in a few operas in europe. I wont bother to get technical about this cd. It truly is one of my favorites in an extensive mixed cd catalog that I own. What I will say is to listen to a few sample tracks and understand what so many of us in the U.S. and abroad already know: Russell Watson is King!
