4 out of 5 stars Mirrimask - the music.......2007-08-06

After seeing the movie, I had to get the music. It was not disappointing. The songs are mythical, the arrangements and instrumentation are excellent. Only drawback is the "soundtrack" characteristic of short snipits of songs that work better in the movie than by themselves.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, better soundtrack.......2007-05-19

I just recently saw this movie and the only thing I could think about afterwards was that I had to get this soundtrack. I'm not usually a big fan of movie soundtracks, but this cd is unlike any other out there, soundtrack or not. The use of strings and carnaval type instruments is completely unique and makes this a must by for any fan of music.

5 out of 5 stars great collection of unusual music.......2007-05-07

Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.

5 out of 5 stars Supurb.......2007-03-08

This soundtrack is truly a delight to listen to. It ranges from quirky circus music to deep and melodic mysterious tunes. It is a great CD to relax to and to use as background music for most any relaxing time hanging out with friends.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-02-24

This is a very good soundtrack to a very good movie. The music is amazingly composed and is nice to listen to.

Like the Dirtbombs or the Screws, the Detroit Cobras are an underground rock & roll act that pays homage to the decades of artists who have hit the vinyl before them. These Motor City garage rockers combine gospel, soul, R&B, and '50s rock & roll to create a unique mix of retro innocence and tight, danceable music overflowing with rhythm and grit. Frontwoman Rachael Nagy croons with class and soul, with a low, hearty voice that sounds husky and warm. On the band's second album, Life, Love and Leaving, the Cobras cover songs by everyone from Otis Redding and Ike Turner to more obscure acts like Clyde McPhatter (the amazing ballad "Let's Forget About the Past") and Ronnie Mack (the mind-blowing "Cry On"). While a band that only does covers may sound like a one-trick pony, the Cobras manage to mine the hidden parts of bygone eras, coming back with gems that might go otherwise unheard to the next generations, and creating a great style of their own in the process. --Jennifer Maerz

Album Description

Motor City bad-asses the Detroit Cobra's 2nd album, (Sympathy For The Record Industry) with a new line-up. Led by vocalist Rachel Nagy and guitarist Maribel Restrepo, the band charges through fourteen tracks of classic soul and R&B delivered with ferocious garage-punk energy. Includes songs by Mickey Lee Lane, Jackie Deshannon, Ronnie Mack, Mary Wells, Ike Turner, Clyde McPhatter, Otis Redding, and more. Includes Eddie Harsch of the Black Crowes on bass.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Play twice!.......2007-06-27

The Detroit Cobras have a healthy disregard for musical fashion and play almost exclusively brilliant, scorching covers of favourites from their vinyl collections from the fifties onwards, paying welcome particular attention to artists with a Detroit connection. There have been a number of line-up changes over the years but always with Rachel Nagy's vocals backed up with Maribel Restrepo on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, and on this record with Dante Aliano (guitar), Eddie Hawrsh (that's how it is spelled on this record)(bass and keyboards) and Damian Lang (drums).

Although fourteen songs are thoroughly dealt with, the whole album is over in half an hour because when a song is done, it's done, and sometimes this only takes a minute and a half. If only more bands would adopt this policy!

Hey Sailor is actually Mickey Lee Lane's Hey Sah-Lo-Ney, which he cut for Swan back in 1965. The Ronettes are an obvious source of inspiration and for He Did It the Cobras reach back to their pre-Spector days at Colpix, and a song co-written by Jackie DeShannon (now a Cobras' fan after hearing their versions of He Did it and Breakaway). Find Me A Home is more properly known as Home In Your Heart when first recorded by Solomon Burke, who also had the original of the much-covered Stupidity. Oh My Lover may be known to you if you ever turned over your copy of the Chiffons' He's So Fine and played the other side. Cry On is a cover of an early Irma Thomas hit written by Allen Toussaint (contrary to other reviews it has nothing to do with Ronnie Mack). Mary Wells wrote Bye Bye Baby for Jackie Wilson but when Berry Gordy heard it, he had Mary Wells record it herself at United Sound in Detroit for his new Motown label, her first single in 1960, making her sing it in a hoarse voiced style which makes it a natural for Rachel's naturally throaty vocals.

Boss Lady is the band's re-interpration of local band's Davis Jones and the Fenders' Boss With The Hot Sauce. Laughing At You takes us back to the Gardenias (not the Guardinias as printed in the booklet), who wrote and recorded it for Detroit's Fortune label in 1957 as I'm Laughing At You. Bob Dylan played it on his Theme Time Radio Hour special on laughter. Ike and Tina Turner had a regional R&B hit with You Can't Miss Nothing That You Never Had (disguised here as Can't Miss Nothing) in 1963. That leaves Right Around The Corner originally by the Five Royales in 1956, written by Charlie Singleton and Rose Marie McCoy; Won't You Dance With Me was by Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels when they were still known as Billy Lee and the Rivieras; Let's Forget About The Past was on the flipside of Clyde Mcphatter's huge 1962 single Lover, Please; and finally Shout Bama Lama, possibly the definitive version of this song, was by Johnny Jenkins' Pinetoppers in 1961, featuring a novice singer called Otis Redding.

This is a great album, over too soon, but short enough to play all over again straight away, even louder, which I recommend you do.

5 out of 5 stars "Got a song in my mind".......2007-01-09

Very cool album. Nagy's got pipes. "Hey Sailor" is flat out powerful. A couple of the other tracks have an ampling Big-Bopperesque beat that is a little too simplistic...maybe could have been amped up a bit more...just not as strong as some of the other tracks, and pale slightly by direct one after another comparison.

In any event, I bought 5 very good CD's this month and this is the one getting all of the time in the player. I will be picking up more Cobras. I also want to see them live, but haven't seen where they make the trip over to GR very often.

Goes nicely with city that is re-inventing itself as we speak.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT TIME OF R'N'R.......2006-08-16

Nothing fancy here but this band does whirl up an enticing atmosphere of 50's-60's style rock n roll and makes it sound real fresh and invigorating. I had a real pleasant time listening to this disc. Totally blows away all of that modern day alternative fake rock crap.

This material is truly invaluable. RACHEL is hot!!!

5 out of 5 stars God's Favorite Bar Band.......2005-12-08

Forget everything you've heard and read about the White Stripes for a minute. Oh, sure, they're cute in their red and white togs and all, despite Jack White managing to look like he's just vomited in almost every photo you see of him, but on a grass roots level, they barely register on the radar in their hometown of Detroit. I should know - I live there...

And despite Meg White's ability to master her drum kit in much the same way a left-handed pre-schooler masters tying his shoelaces, it's women like Wendy Case of The Paybacks and Rachel Nagy of the Detroit Cobras who are the real queens of the roost around here. Live with it.

Although they've been tied up in my own back yard since 1994, it wasn't until an on-line acquaintance sent me a mix CD last year that I got my first taste of The Detroit Cobras. Quite simply put, Nagy's voice, whether she realizes it or not, is a gift from above.

"Shout Bama Lama," a cover of the old Otis Redding shouter, just may be the best thing the Cobras have ever done. It's stop-and-start cadence and churning glam/punk guitars, Nagy purring "She's bustin' bricks now," actually forced me to pull my car over to the side of the road the first time I heard it.

We may be dirty and broke here in the Murder City, but we're also smart. Look no further than the Detroit Cobras for proof positive.

5 out of 5 stars If you are cool, you will own this CD........2004-05-18

OK, I have this rule about playing music that is real popular or well known: I don't do it.

Certainly it doesn't mean I don't like good music.

I devote alot of time trying to find "underground" music to enjoy.

So I came across this album a couple days ago, and it was my best score in some time.

A beautiful rocking collection of 50's and 60's songs, redone in a modern "garage" style. Awesome!

So when you are become tired of The Strokes, White Stripes, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Kills, check out THE DETROIT COBRAS!

The sound from harnoy;s cello is enough to make me cry. she produces such tone and anyone that doesnt agree is uneducated. what can i say elanor rigby the phrassing outstanding ofra has been and still is one of my favorite cellist.

4 out of 5 stars Beatles Like I've Never Heard Before.......2005-02-10

I borrowed this CD from the library out of curiosity and what a delightful suprise. The interpretation of Beatles music is wonderfully simple - I especially love the different variations done with the same tune in some of the pieces giving them a fresh sound. Harmonies between cello and violin in "Norwegian Wood", "Across the Universe" and "Girl" are mesmerising. Mostly played with a slow tempo, this is great soothing music after a stressful day. This CD is definitely worth purchasing for a twist in popular Lennon-McCartney compositions.

4 stars for song selection, otherwise 5 stars for interpretation.

1 out of 5 stars Interesting Cover, but Bad CD.......2004-06-05

I can not believe that Ofra is even famous. Her playing is so stiff and lacks phrasing. Her tone quality is horrible. The only reason that she makes recordings is because her father is rich and he bought her a several million dollar cello and paid symphony orchestras to let her play solos with them. But, it is interesting to hear a cellist play the Beatles. Only buy this CD if you have boughten every cd on this webstite and have a little money left over.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Relaxing.......2004-05-21

The Beatles and Ofra Harnoy! The best of both worlds! What more could you ask for? A friend gave me this CD, and I have enjoyed listening to this right before bedtime every night. Ms. Harnoy, I applaud you for making some of the finest renditions of my favorite Beatles tunes. If you're a semi-professional classical musician like me and you don't have this in your CD collection, you're missing out--Big Time!!! 5 + stars for a wonderful CD!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and powerful.......2002-01-01

Before you write this off as another attempt to "muzak" the Beatles, listen to Harnoy's lovely playing on "She's Leaving Home," "Across The Universe" and "Girl" and see if you still feel that way once you've heard them. A great set of interpretations by a most evocative cellist.

4 out of 5 stars Another from Mr. Zellar.......2006-06-05

For those that have been a fan of Martin Zellar's before the Gear Daddies break-up and beyond, this album will not disappoint. It is also a great starting point for newbies.

Zellar does not stray far from what has worked in the past, yet many of the tracks are refreshing. I have spent a-many long Minnesotan summer nights by the campfire with MZ & GD albums playing in the background.

This is just another chapter in a near-legendary career. File with artists such as Wilco, Jayhawks, Peacemakers, Pistoleros, Golden Smog...

5 out of 5 stars Scattered is by far Martin Zellar's best work to date.......2002-06-19

"Scattered" is a masterpiece! It has a good blend of uplifting songs such as "Here's to Everyone" to sad songs like "What It Is I Feel." This album is similar in its style to Born Under. Martin Zellar has definitely matured in his musical style from his Gear Daddies days. The lyrics express emotions that are real, however painful they may be. "What It Is I Feel" has got to be the most heartfelt song of a man dealing with his feelings I have ever heard. The influence of the likes of Neil Diamond and Bruce Springsteen are clearly apparent in this album.

5 out of 5 stars The best yet..........2002-05-07

and that's saying something.

Martin Zellar is one of the most underappreciated and talented singer/songwriters around. It is a shame that everyone hasn't had the opportunity to hear his work, first with the Gear Daddies, but especially with the Hardways.

The album flows wonderfully together as a whole, each song highlighting the band's musical abilities and Zellar's affecting vocals and lyrics. From the first song, "Here's to Everyone," to the disc's standout tune, "What it is I Feel," a moving and heartbreakingly honest portrayal of one man's inner turmoil, to the album's closing track, "Always Be Friends," this is one CD you won't tire of quickly -- and it gets better each time you hear it.

If you are already a fan of Zellar's, you will love "Scattered," and if not, you will be after hearing this album.

"Scattered" is by far the most fully realized and mature work this band has released and I can't wait to see what comes next!

5 out of 5 stars Another gem.......2002-05-07

Martin Zellar is slowly but surely building a catalog of material worthy of Bruce Springsteen, John Hiatt, Paul Kelly and other outstanding singer-songwriters who can distill elements of the human experience into elegant 3 minute songs. It's been 4 years since Zellar's last studio album, but it was definitely worth the wait, as this disc represents his strongest album since his grossly under-rated debut solo CD, "Born Under". The first 5 songs on "Scattered" may represent the best collection of songs that Zellar has recorded to date. Zellar continues to tackle issues of the heart and home, and like Springsteen and Hiatt, approaches them from the perspective of a mature adult (rather refreshing in this day and age). And the many years of playing in bars in the upper Midwest has paid off for the Hardways in spades - you can hear the cohesion and precision in the music generated by this crack 4 piece band. The music itself veers away slightly from the country-tinged sound of Zellar's previous CD's and exhibits a more modern, more rock-oriented style. And some noodling in the studio pays off big time in tunes such as the mesmerizing "Summer Song". Definitely one of the best albums of this or any other year.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice cover of beatles music.......2004-08-03

This is a very nice adaptation of Beatles music. The arrangements are quite original with just enough of the familiar melodies to feel comfortable. This is a nice companion to "Friends".

5 out of 5 stars 'Norwegian Wood' the BEST Beatles tribute album ever!.......2001-07-24

Danish insturmentalists Trio Rococo's absolutely stunning and beautiful 1995 album "Norwegian Wood" is one of those hidden treasures, a diamond in the rough, waiting to be discovered by YOU. Simply, it is the best Beatles tribute album ever. For any fan of string/woodwinds, insturmental trios, and the Beatles of course, this is absolutely an ESSENTIAL album to have. Stunning arrangements of such Beatles hits as "Eleanor Rigby", "Here Comes The Sun" (my favorite), "Daytripper", "I am the Walrus", and "Blackbird" are recreated with the same inginuity and creativity in which they were originally written and created, and in such a incredible fashion that it's absolutely... beyond words. I strongly recommend getting this album, at any cost or expense. It's WORTH IT!

5 out of 5 stars Strong Music In Its Own Right.......2000-02-26

This album is most immediately recommended to those who already know the songs. Putting on "Because" and filling in the words in your own mind while the instruments play the classic song in a whole new way permits you whole new insights into how it is that, because the world is round, it turns me on -- insights the Beatles themselves may not have had when they first recorded the tune. On the other hand, this is strong classical music with a character all its own, and can be enjoyed entirely as that as well -- my girlfriend Sarah and I like to put it on for our romantic moments.

5 out of 5 stars Well crafted and beautifully rendered.......2000-02-20

This is not some sappy boiled down elevator music. But rather, these are interestingly arranged and artfully performed renditions of some of the Beatles' most enduring tunes. The Trio Rococo plays them like the classics that they are.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have CD........1999-01-06

Norwegian Wood is a wonderful CD to have in your collection. It is a collection of Beatles songs redone in a classical style. Even if you are not a Beatles fan, the music is wonderful to relax to. And if you are a Beatles fan, you'll enjoy your favorites in different way.

4 out of 5 stars Need To See.......2005-10-15

This movie didn't get a lot of press and your more inclined to see it at 3 am on HBO then you are on a Network's Primetime spot. If you like movies like "love stinks," "buying the cow," "two ninas," or "just write" then you'll like "kissing a fool." Jason Lee is a great actor as well.

3 out of 5 stars Good.......2005-01-19

A fun movie to watch, and even a good chick flick, but not the greatest script. The three actors work very well together, and David Schwimmer has some of the best moments. If you enjoy these actors, then this is the movie for you.

5 out of 5 stars boo to the critics.......2003-08-19

What's with the bl***dy critics?! They obviously don't know a good movie when they see one. "Kissing A Fool" is an excellent film. One of the best comedies I've seen in years. David Schwimmer, Jason Lee and Mili Avital play their roles well - they have very good chemistry. I never miss a Jason Lee film - even if it's something as lousy as "Heartbreakers". Because he never let's you down. I rented "Kissing A Fool" a couple of years ago and recently bought it on DVD so I could watch it a million times more.

5 out of 5 stars Good core romantic comedy core dvd holding.......2003-05-02

This movie, hands down, is worth owning. You have a breakout performance by Jason Lee and an always solid second lead by Friends' David Schwimmer. Most importantly, this movie has very clever and well written dialogue regarding a circle of late 20 somethings in 1990's Chicago who are living the ups and downs of single dating life. You have humor, wit, unexpected lover drama and all around good cinema. This movie keeps your attention from the getgo, does not let go--based on its story telling style. I'm in my early 30's and love this film, my girlfriend is mid-20's and loves this film. And yes, even my 63 year old parents thought this film was particularly captivating over a recent family holiday weekend. Buy it. Watch it once a year. It gets better with each viewing.

4 out of 5 stars ok.......2003-01-13

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......1999-03-07

I've always loved Zellar's music. His talent for describing the mundane and melancholy small town life is superb. However, in his latest offering, it seems like the music is forcing the lyrics - instead of the other way around. In my opinion, the true greatness in Zellar's music was in the way the lyrics flowed - telling a story - while the music seemed to fit in perfectly around the lyrics to enhance the total effect. Sadly, this is lacking in the "Many Moods." (have a listen to Born Under and several of the tracks on MZ and the Hardways to see what I mean) And perhaps this latest work is a sign that Zellar is maturing as an artist.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner from Martin Zellar & the Hardaways.......1999-01-20

Martin Zellar's 3rd album since the demise of the Gear Daddies is another excellent roots-rock outing. Zellar is a terrific singer and songwriter, and his band the Hardways provide great accompaniment for him to do his thing. This is a very organic sounding album, lots of acoustic and electric guitar, organ, and even horns and strings on a couple of tunes. While definitley a rock & roll album, there is a pronounced (in a good way) country influence here. It's twangy in spots, but this is a good thing, not a cheesey, formulaic modern-Nashville thing. It's a crying shame that an artist with such great, honest work doesn't get more airplay (but considering the crap on the radio these days, maybe that's a good thing). This album should appeal to fans of Springsteen, Mellencamp, The Eagles, BoDeans, Wilco, etc.

5 out of 5 stars HEART-FELT LYRICS AND RUGGED SOUND MAKE THIS CD ONE TO BUY!.......1998-11-12

Martin Zellar brings with him, as always, his heartfelt lyrics and rugged sound, making this cd one to buy. His songs are unforgettable and touching. They songs make you feel as if you've lived them. His work touches a common thread with everyone who listens.

      Amazon.com

Composer James Horner's ubiquitous score for Titanic remains a bittersweet, romantic modern soundtrack staple, one that became both a public sensation (the first orchestral score to soar to the top of the Billboard charts) and Hollywood legend (winning the Oscar as 1997's Best Dramatic Score). Its infusion of Irish folk motifs within a sweeping context that evokes the majestic danger of the sea is charming, its seamless interpolation of synths and orchestra still an inspirational landmark for other contemporary composers. This new Hybrid SACD Stereo/Surround Sound edition enhances Horner's unabashed melodramatics with a crystalline new mix that maintains the original's nuances, even as it underscores the composer's melodramatic orchestral thunder. The rear channels of the new mix underplay the limits of the format's surround potential, but add a spacious, hall ambience that actually enhances the spectacular new clarity of the front channels' primary music mix. Celine Dion's star turn on the film's hit single, "My Heart Will Go On," is mixed similarly, with her dead-center vocals surrounded by the orchestra, effectively creating the illusion of a stage performance. --Jerry McCulley
