Released shortly after his death in 1993, The Yellow Shark represents one of the only accurate performances of Frank Zappa's "serious" orchestral music--at least as far as the composer was concerned. Assembled from a series of sold-out performances in Germany by the Ensemble Moderne, the set includes re-workings of old favorites like "The Dog Breath Variations" and "Uncle Meat," live arrangements of some of his hairiest computer music like "The Girl in the Magnesium Dress" and "G-Spot Tornado" and new works by Zappa composed specifically for the event. The performances are astonishing and the music? Pure Zappa. --Andrew Boscardin
Album Description
The 26-member Ensemble Modern performs FZ's 'most-humanly-impossible-to-play' compositions. Piano duets, string quintets & small ballets. Simply exquisite, with a 60-page booklet to explain it all. Originally released in 1993, it stayed on the classical chart for most of `94. Includes the tracks 'Outrage At Valdez,' 'None Of The Above,' & 'Welcome To The United States', plus arrangements of some of the most fiendishly difficult pieces from FZ's back catalogue & even a 'greatest hit' or two (some would pick this as the definitive version of 'Dog Breath Variations'). Sadly, this was the last album released by FZ during his lifetime. The didipak and the booklet are housed in a slipcase. Rykodisc.

Dedicated to experts?.......2007-06-25
Frank Zappa was very proud of this great and difficult work done at the end of his (too short) life.
It requires also great concentation and a capability that probably I don't have to well understand this kind of experimental classic music.
It goes beyond the experimental rock that is typical of many of his works, leading him to the level of great contemporary experimental classic composers.
Given such a level of difficulty I don't know how much I can suggest to buy it. You just should try to hear at this music and decide if it does fit with your soul (how could I believe just a few years ago that today I would like so much 'Your funeral my trial' of Nick Cave?)
Zappa Attempts Stockhausen.......2007-02-13
FZ goes to Germany to upstage Karlheinz and tries an avant garde stage performance which is an elegant and popular form of expression in Germany. The Germans have perfected this type of marriage between romanticism and neoclassicism. In this case it's an overly technical performance, a display. The orchestra all sound good yet Zappa has given the music to another conductor, Peter Rundel. There is no rhythm section and without a background the result is too intellectual.
The Yello Shark, performed by the Modern Music Ensemble.......2007-01-19
This CD addresses the more serious, compositional aspect of Frank Zappa's career, and it could not be addressed in a more suitable manner. It includes some of FZ's more difficult works, such as "Bee Bop Tango", "Uncle Meat", and "G-Spot Tornado". The conductor is Peter Rundel, and as Zappa says himself, he is a fine conductor. This is highly recommended for anyone who has already developed a taste for Zappa's complex and imaginative arrangements.
ZAP!.......2006-01-20
Trying to define this album to my good friend was hard. "Well it's Zappa's songs done with an orechestra, but's not really classical sounding . . . it's just Zappa." And my friend just simply nodded and said "Sounds awesome." and i realized that if any reviewer would've just said 'It's Zappa!' it wouldn't take much more to sway me. so - It's Zappa! And it's damn near perfect it's so good! Riveting!!!
Be warned! You may like nobody (musically or real life) or anything (musically or real life) ever again after listening to this album, but it's not that big of a deal!
A Frank Zappa Treasure. Better than many of his CDs.......2005-07-29
`The Yellow Shark', with words and music by Frank Zappa is a collection of `chamber music' pieces recorded in 1993 in Germany, performed by a German orchestra, `Ensemble Modern', which, I believe, commissioned Herr Zappa to assemble these pieces for their concerts. In the accompanying booklet, Frank is pictured with a baton in hand, but the credits only have him conducting three pieces, those with a very significant spoken word aspect (all spoken in English). He also makes a brief appearance at the beginning of the CD where he introduces the Ensemble Modern conductor, Peter Rundel.
This recording is probably one of the very last to be done by Zappa himself, before his unexpected death due to illness. Of all the musical figures of the 1960s lost to us over the years, I miss Zappa almost as much as I miss John Lennon, and I am very happy that if we had to lose them, it was not to drugs or any other kind of self abuse.
There are fourteen musical pieces and three `spoken word' pieces on the recording. I confess that the spoken word pieces may actually be a bit dated, especially the `Welcome to the United States' track on a questionnaire for immigrants which makes a reference to terrorism which may seem entirely too glib in our current environment.
Two of the earliest tracks `Dog Breath Variations' and `Uncle Meat' are instantly recognizable from their music and titles as `quotes' from earlier albums, with very little `classical' varnish over their strongly jazzy sound. Most of the other musical pieces have more subtle quotes from earlier Zappa works, and demonstrate influences from George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, the movie music from `Spartacus', and his old mentor, Edgar Varese.
I noticed that the applause on these tracks was louder than the music and I was wondering whether the audience was appreciating the music itself or the presence of that formidable 1960's icon, Frank Zappa. I'm sure it was a little bit of both, but Zappa and audience couldn't resist quoting from one of his best albums, `The Mothers Fillmore East - June 1971'.
I think this quote was entirely appropriate, in that we owe so much musical innovation to the popular musical performers who were nutured by 1960's, producing such wonders as Zappa and the great bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Who, who are still scoring our artistic perceptions on both commercials and dramatic themes on TV.
This may not be Zappa's greatest album, but it is one of his cleanest. Like `Hot Rats', there is very little `throw away' material. And, it is one of the very few pop or classical recordings by a major musical figure where you will hear the performance of a didgeridoo (Australian aborigonal flute).
Highly recommended for Zappa fans and fans of 1960s music in general.

Everlast continues defying the odds with his sophomore CD. The former House of Pain frontman and Ice-T sidekick defied the odds in 1998 with the chart-topping Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, which moved Everlast beyond his rap roots and deep into a spare, acoustic amalgam of Delta blues, country, and rock--an approach that took critics and fans by storm. Eat at Whitey's finds him beefing up his sound as well as bringing in big names, such as N'dea Davenport (who adds her always welcome vocals on the sexy, R&B-flavored "Love for Real"), Goodie Mob's Cee-Lo, Cypress Hill's B Real, and Carlos Santana, for whom Everlast penned the Grammy-winning "Put Your Lights On." Everlast is still fixated on redemption and regret, but his intensity and passion make up for the narrow focus, as, guitar in hand, he conjures up a nocturnal, sultry world populated with saints, sinners, and homeboys. --Amy Linden

Mmmm...mmmm.......2007-05-06
Whitey can make me have goosebumps--the things he says. If you listen to what he is really saying, it is pretty deep. I love this album. I have had this album for years and the CD has just recently worn out and now I'm buying a new one. This is one CD I can't live without. As a woman especially, I feel he can be sensitive and raw, and tells how men can really feel about women, life, and the world in general. He is so diverse and unique. Two thumbs way up.
I'll have seconds........2006-04-25
I just recently got "Eat At Whitey's", and am glad I did. It's actually the third solo disc of his, and second since House Of Pain. Fans of his "Whitey Ford Sings The Blues" album should like this as well, as it's another good mix of guitars and rhymes. I really like the opener alot, and "Black Jesus" was the hit from this, though not what I would call the best song. "I Can't Move" is a nice mid-paced track, and you gotta love "Deadly Assassins" with B-Real from Cypress Hill. The "Dinner" side of this album is equally good, my favorite songs being "One And The Same", "One Two", and "Graves To Dig". Overall I hesitate to say this is as good as "Whitey Ford", but I will definitely be eating at Whitey's again.
An interesting Album that impresses if you let it!.......2005-10-05
How do you begin this review? Everlast started out in House of Pain back in the day and then when they dropped off the face of the earth Everlast came with a blues/rock album that received a fair amount of praise. Then there was this, his sophomore effort. While not a bad album it does not always flow that smoothly. He opens with "Whitey" an interesting intro that you could totally see Bubba Sparxxx tear apart, but in all fairness this is the only time that Everlast sounds good over a beat on the album. The rest of the album goes back and forth between guitar based tracks and more traditional rap tracks. His style of rapping over rock beats has been done before but he sounds better than most. He is at his best playing a mellow blues riff and kind of half singing half rapping his verses. This album is by no means bad and actually it is pretty good but he should have ditched the rapping altogether, even if Kurupt sounds damn good on their duet "One, Two (12)."
Im "....at whitey's" but the food not so good this time!!.......2004-06-30
Let me start off by saying im a HUGE EVERLAST fan so this album disapointed me....just a little. After hearing his near perfect creation that is "whitey ford sings the blues" i was dying for more. What i loved about ".....sings the blues" was that it had an even balance of rap tracks and str8 up guitar songs. Unfortunately this time its more than 80% guitar and only 20% rap. Dont get me wrong, the songs are mostly top quality, but some of them i felt were mediocre at best such as "put your lights on", "mercy on my soul", "love for real" and "children's story" (which i never liked anyway). BUT the thing is, when he gets it right, EVERLAST gets it really right!!!! The best on the album are "whitey", "i cant move", "black coffee", "babylon feeling" and "one, two". The others i didnt mention are solid efforts but not standouts.
Pushing musical boundaries.......2004-05-20
Ever since I heard "Black Jesus" on the radio I was hooked. I can hardly name another band that plays this style of music. Everlast left only a small amount of hip-hop in his music, and added a lot of R'N'B, acoustic guitar rock, a touch of soul music, and even a string quartet. The resulting innovative blend appeared to be top-quality music that is suitable for serious listening and appealing to fans of different genres. We can say that Everlast addressed the R'N'B roots of hip-hop, but it also sounds very modern.
The diversity of styles presented here is impressive. "Deadly Assassins" is the closest thing to House of Pain times, while "Black Coffee" is almost a ballad. "Love for Real" has this specific bluesy feel, and "One, Two" is a mellow rapping flow. "Children's Story", a cover song, is impressive. Actually, I like the entire album, and I'm particularly impressed with the integration of cello and violin in a music like this. Carlos Santana's desire to work with Everlast is a quality approval mark, and the result is very good.
If your interests in music are broad, and you are not a "rap-fan-till-I-die", then I can't see how you won't like this record. Everlast is not the best singer, and neither he is a skillful guitar-player. But he is an excellent songwriter, sincere lyricist and emotional performer. This is one of my best purchases of recent years.

Laid Back Masterpiece.......2006-04-02
This album was being piped in over the speakers at a local music store I was shopping in a while back. By song eight I was completely converted. Few albums grab me as quickly as this one did. It's a laid back album with great instrumentation and programming. Is it electronic? Sure. But don't let that scare you away. Good songwriting transcends any style or format. I can safely recommend this album to anyone even if they aren't into keyboard base music as I am.
Nathan Whitey wrote every song on the album and played almost every instrument as well outside of a few drum parts. It's a lush, creative and suprising disc that reminds me of other artists while still staying original and fresh. You can get this album far cheaper locally, I have no idea why Amazon has this for such an expensive price.

Nice..........2001-03-26
Downloaded "Black Jesus" from Napster when I heard he had a solo career.... I had to go out an get the album and boy is it worth it! A unique style that works perfectly accross the album... I'll have to check out his earlier stuff! I highly recommend this CD ... a gem of an album in an industry that is over-saturated with sickly-sweet "pop". All you boybands want cred? - Pick-up a guitar, and learn from Everlast. Quality from start to finish. An-mhaith!!

Just like Pleezed Tameecha this album is awesome!! Wish they still played at Whitey's but Nic's isn't so bad either. They are simply a great band!
Awesome!.......2003-10-13
They are FANTASTIC! It's too bad Whiteys closed, but after a night at Nick's, it's good to see their following is still going strong. This CD is great! These guys have a great sound. Wil, you gave me a CD to review, and it is everything I expected it to be. You keep country alive, along with adding your own sound to all the great hits. Virginia loves you!
Wil Wins again.......2000-11-10
Wil and his band are magnificent. This CD is as powerful as his first. Your collection isn't complete until you have Wil Gravatt Live at Whitey's.
Most Faithful Fan.......2000-11-02
This CD is definitely one I consider a 'Favorite' - it's a Great Time! Wil is a great performer with tremendous talent and a terrific band. They continually bring the house down at Whitey's and anywhere they play for that matter! Once you hear this CD you're sure to be hooked and you'll definitely become an instant fan. I definitely think everyone should own two copies of this one! A Front Row Fan
The Wil Gravatt Band Rules.......2000-10-26
The "Live at Whitey's" CD is not only great music, but it gives you a sense of being there. Anytime I get a craving for Wil Gravatt music (which is often), I plug-in this CD and I feel as if I'm there. Wil's music, and of course the band, is terrific but the best way to experience this group is live. Some performers sound best when they're are recorded in a sound studio, but the Wil Gravatt Band sounds best when you experience them live. I highly recommend this CD. It is one of my very favorite CDs (Wil's first CD is another one of my very favorites).
