Helen Forrest--She Always Rates 5 Stars.......2005-09-13
It's hard for a lover of Miss Forrest to find fault with anything she did. This album is no exception. Her voice is scintillating as always. The sound quality is excellently reproduced--remember these songs are primarily from 78's. And the price is right. Is there anthing negative to say? One always wishes for more: if only the CD contained more selections! Helen was the best of her era. Everybody knew it then. And many of know that she is "for the ages." This album helps us understand why. (This reviewer invites people who love her to write him at pjones.@mail.nwmissouri.edu Let's keep her alive in our hearts.)
The best single-disc Helen Forrest collection.......2002-04-29
Helen Forrest was the greatest of the female big-band singers and, in my opinion, the equal of Frank Sinatra, the best of the male big-band singers. For anyone who wants to learn what she was all about, this is the place to start. Existing fans already familiar with her big-band work will want this collection as well, if only for the post-World War II duets with Dick Haymes.
This intelligently-produced single-disc collection brings together not only her best work with Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and Harry James, both also the best of the Haymes duets. The 25 tracks offer about as much music as you can fit on a CD. The engineers have done a good job of restoring the recordings. In some cases they sound even better than reissues from BMG and Sony, who own the masters.
The disc includes seven recordings each with Artie Shaw, Harry James, and Dick Haymes, three with Benny Goodman, and one postwar solo recording. This makes a lot of sense because Helen Forrest came to prominence and matured as a singer with Artie Shaw and did her best-known work with Harry James. The stint with Benny Goodman, who hired her after Shaw disbanded his orchestra in 1939, was a very unhappy one for Helen and Goodman did not handle her properly. The postwar duets with Dick Haymes are nothing short of wonderful and show that she was a fully mature, intelligent singer who could make just about anything sound good.
Frankly, I will never understand why Helen Forrest did not go on to a successful career after World War II, as did Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and Doris Day, for example. With the exception of Ella Fitzgerald, who had "gone solo" early in the 1940s and was not a part of the big-band era for very long, Helen Forrest was not only the equal of any of the big-band singers who went on to successful careers but, in fact, was better than most of them.
HELEN FORREST'S DEFINITIVE VOCALS!.......2000-02-06
Surely one of the greatest female vocalists of the 30's and 40's, Helen Forrest's voice shines in this fantastic collection. A gifted vocalist with a liquid and ethereal voice,Forrest began her career on radio singing under various names when Artie Shaw hired her to sing with his band in early 1938. Forrest then briefly sang for Benny Goodman (a personally unhappy experience) and afterwards joined Harry James in 1941 where her voice was complimented by James' schmaltzy trumpet and fine arrangements. After singing for James, Helen went solo; she died in 1999. Listen to "Manhattan Serenade" (with James) "Time Waits for No One" and terrific duets with Dick Haymes including "It Had to Be You" "Together" and "I'll Buy That Dream".

I love it!!.......2003-12-31
I'm not at all a Helen Forrest expert, but I picked this up
on sale not long ago, & I'm really glad I did. 4 CDs, studio, radio & 'ballroom' recordings & I think a few fairly rare.
Seems a good cross section of her recordings with Goodman, Shaw & James, as well as Nat King Cole, Gordon Jenkins, Johnny Mercer & others, including a few also from films. The sound quality is really very good overall. Warm, compelling voice that sounds great in big band setting IMO. I love Jo Stafford, & think Helen similar caliber of singer (not that they sound exactly alike).

THIS CD PUTS A SMILE ON MY FACE EVERYTIME I HEAR IT! JUDY KAYE IS A MOST UNDERUTILIZED TALENT ON THE BROADWAY SCENE, AND THIS CD PROVES IT. CLICK THIS RECORDING INTO YOUR CART THIS INSTANT!
Pure Energy.......2000-09-17
What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!

surfer rock at its best with a little"fear" factor.......2006-05-14
As a little kid growing up amongst the 8tracks and .33s and .45s of my parents collection a couple of albums stuck out as far as lifelong memories go. One of those bands was the ventures. Instrumental music with a "voice" of only drums, guitars, bass, and moog: could never get tired of listening to TELSTAR! The other band that stuck in my memory bank was Frankie Stein and His Ghouls, whom i thought were the venture's alter ego only with halloween like screams, moans, and doors creaking! On halloween we would open the door, turn the lights off and have Frankie pouring out of the speakers! It sure beat putting in a cd with 100 sounds when you could have good instrumental music plus halloween sounds at the same time! But it doesnt have to be Halloween to enjoy this band, who, until now was very hard to find in cd form let alone on an album.....I gave this a four because i dont know what the quality of the cd is like yet, but i do know if u like instrumental rock or surfer rock you will not be disappointed with F.S. and H.GLs

Product Description
Composer Harry Warren used to joke about the public not knowing who he was. But if you asked someone from the film or music world, they'd smile and say, "Oh, Harry Warren - in the 30's, he wrote everything!"

Surprised By This One! Loved It.......2007-05-12
I thoroughly loved this music from the 40's. I had not as a child known the name of Harry Warren but now I know I should have for the songs of that period of time are well in my memory as well as some new ones I didn't know. If you liked music of that time do look into owning one of Harry Warren's. GREAT!

Dave had the craziest masterpiece !.......2006-08-22
This album is a masterpiece, I don't think four stars are enough for this unbelievable gem of the West Coast Jazz. Five stars would not be enough either. This album is ESSENTIAL. It could be the best example of small orchestra Jazz ever recorded probably together with Art Pepper Plus Eleven (Marty Paich one of the arrangers here was even there). Some peole talk about Birth of the Cool as the best small orchestra album ever recorded, I don't agree, everytime I listen BOTC, it puts me to sleep. This album instead swings hard and is a lot of fun! The sound of the orchestra is wonderful, the charts exilarating, the arrangements superb, the musicians absolutly excellent. It is a fun from its beginning to its end. The album de facto would end with "People in Love" but Capitol added 4 tunes by the Don Fagerquist Octet (Don play the trumpet in the whole Craziest Dream) in which Dave Pell played the tenor. The music is a lot similar, even if the 13 tracks of "I had the craziest dream" are simple unreachable. I think this album is just one of those unsung gems that now we HAVE to recognize in their giantness. Please, don't think that just because this album is funny, it is not serious music or it is not a fantastic, rare achievement in music. Don't do this quite common mistake! A lot of people think that just because Miles and Trane were "serious" they wrote and played better music than what West Coast guys did! It is an incredible short sighted view. West Coast jazz had some of the best Jazz musicians ever! Here there are some of them! West Coast Jazz is something absolutly special when played at this level! By the way this album has just one of the craziest and most beautiful cover in the whole history of Jazz. It is a MARVEL!
I REALLY LOVE THIS CRAZIEST DREAM DAVE HAD!!!!!!
Vintage Dave Pell-Don Fagerquist velvety smooth interaction.......1999-02-11
Fans of the wonderful solo work done by Dave Pell, tenor sax, and Don Fagerquist, trumpet, in the old Les Brown orchestra will love this CD. The smoothly tight voicings of Dave and Don are classic. An added bonus is the inclusion of four cuts at the end by the Don Fagerquist Nonette. In case you aren't familiar with him, Don Fagerquist was an unsung giant in the world of 50s and 60s jazz. This CD shows you why.

ONE OF NAUGHTY BY NATURE'S GREATEST SONGS.......2004-06-02
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SINGLES, MAYBE EVEN THE GREATEST SINGLE THAT NAUGHTY BY NATURE EVER RELEASED. THIS IS BETTER THAN ''OPP'' AND ''HIP HOP HOORAY'' COMBINED! AND THE RARE REMIXES TO THESE SONGS ARE GOOD TOO. ONLY TRACK I DON'T LIKE IS THE ORIGINAL VERSION TO ''CRAZIEST''. DON'T GET ME WRONG, THE ORIGINAL VERSION IS AVERAGE TO SAY THE LEAST, BUT THE REMIX IS WAY BETTER. PLUS, THEY EVEN HAVE THE INSTRUMENTALS TO THE ORIGINAL VERSIONS OF THESE SONGS, WHICH I BE RAPPING OVER. IF YOU LIKE THESE TRACKS, THEN GO GET THE ALBUM ''POVERTY'S PARADISE''.
