When the Wu-Tang Clan came out of the gate in late 1993, they brought with them a new style, a style that literally changed the rap game just as Dr. Dre had done a year earlier. But even though it seemed like the Wu came from nowhere, they actually had a rather modest beginning. Words From the Genius is that beginning. Originally released in 1991 on the mighty Cold Chillin label, the album features the Genius, and to a lesser degree RZA (here known as Prince Rakeem). When you consider Cold Chillin's roster in 1991, most notably Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap, Words From the Genius seems to be a perfect fit. Like those two rappers, the Genius merged bravado with the darkside of street life and delivered his street-smart rhymes with muscle. The album, produced by Easy Mo Bee, was heavily influenced by the wishes of its label Cold Chillin, who were eager to make it a commercial success. The album, however, was a commercial disappointment; GZA's experience with Cold Chillin, combined with a similar ordeal for RZA at Tommy Boy, generated a bitterness towards the music industry that would be expressed lyrically throughout his career, and would ultimately provide the impetus for the Wu-Tang Clan's revolutionary ruthless business strategy. This official Cold Chillin / Traffic Ent. reissue includes two rare bonus cuts: the very dope Pass the Bone and the Words from A Genius (Prince Rakeem Remix), both produced by the RZA. Pretty good 1st album from GZA/Genius.......2006-10-18

This was way before the Wu-Tang days, I think originally recorded around 1990 (just look at him on the cover), when it was the the RZA (who was known as Prince Rakeem and had a single out around the same time called "We Love You Rakeem" which never really caught any buzz) and the Genius (not even the GZA yet) so don't expect the classic Wu sound and Ol' Dirty may have been with them at the time but I'm not sure. You get the golden age of NY hip-hop beats (mid 80's), nothin fancy but a drum machine and maybe a twist thrown in here and there. The album is good for it's age although I heard it only sold around 11,000 copies when first released due to lack of marketing (same with RZA's single which led them to start the mighty Wu-Tang). Standout tracks are the Classic "Pass the Bone" f/ RZA = one of my favorite tracks that any of the 2 are on - ever -- It's that nice of a song, and "Words from the Genius", "Who's Ya Rhymin Hero", "True Fresh M.C's", "Those were the Days", "Life of a Drug Dealer". They're my favorites but the others are still nice, a must ahve album for fans to see where the Great Wu came from.

GZA GENIUS.......2006-10-06

First Cd by Gza, and this cd plays like a dope old rakim CD. It is one of those chillen CDs, where your just smokin a nice blunt while you here the briliant rhymes and rhythems. Cop it, it used to be a rare cd, but now it was re-released in 2006. Peace out1

Yes, that is the original cover and the wrong tracklist. Here's what I wrote for the re-pressing. But, I ment it for the og version. It's still valid!

People riding the bozack love this LP, but the plain truth is that it's wack. Gza is one of the dopest emcees of all time, but his 1st LP along with the 1st ish Rza did is garbage. This isn't even the o.g. pressing version. "Pass the Bone" was a decent cut, but was a throwaway from other sessions and leverage for Cold Chillin' to re-release this album after the Wu-tang Clan emerged.

I originally got this CD in the dollar bin at the record store and hated it. I tried so hard to like it, but it failed. A year or two later when the Wu came out I dissmissed them originally because I knew Gza was part of their crew. But, in those couple years growth Gza grew leaps and bounds along with Rza.

I eventually sold my copy on Ebay for an obseen amount of money to some kid overseas. Good for me, not for the guy who'd never heard the album.

If you want a classic album... get his 2nd LP "Liquid!"

listen, if you are trying to enjoy this album and you are not in your 30's, then forget about it. if you did not cop this album in 1991, forget about it. you will not understand. i read some clown say the beats are old, the music is not this it is not that.......but for east coast 1991, the music was what it was.

GZA - Words From The Genius.......2006-01-02

This album is the best GZA album. This is the CLASSIC GZA stuff. I got this cd also. Its great. Its old schooll hiphop here. The first Wu related album to be released. Trust me hear the cd, its straight banging. This cd sounds nothing like the other Wu stuff. It doesnt sound like "Liquid Swords" so beware of that. But its bangin none the less. Check it out now! If you can find it anywhere!!! Itll be hard if you dont have it already.

Not that great........2004-06-13

This CD is a re-issue of the 1991 release, that doesn't have the song "Pass the Bone," but has "Come do me" which I haven't heard yet. I would try to get the 1991 release instead of this one; it has a different cover that shows The Genius writing in a book with a feather pen or something. The only really good songs, and they are really good, are tracks 1,2,6,13. The rest are kinda of like, eh. The 1991 release has a different track order. This CD's booklet is not a booklet but just a one-sided album cover picture. You can probably download the good tracks illegally.
