I love this CD so much I keep buying it and giving it to friends to listen to. The performance and the song writing is purely annointed. Revelation Song and The More I Seek You are amazing. You will be blessed!

As a Music Pastor, this is one of the best worship albums I've ever heard. It also makes excellent background music for prayer.

The Gateway trio of guitarist John Abercrombie, bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Jack DeJohnette made its debut in the midst of the fusion era, recording this album in 1975, but there's a flowing rhythmic ease and complex interplay that immediately distinguish the group's music from the day's electric jazz craze. Abercrombie's electrified lines scurry and wander into strange byways, especially on the extended "May Dance" and "Sorcery 1," but Holland and DeJohnette keep digging in and varying their patterns, knitting together coherent group music. Holland's own solos are models of order and invention, and the CD is also an opportunity for him to demonstrate his skills as a composer. He wrote four of the six pieces here, and the elusive "Jamala" is particularly beautiful. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Essential CD for the Creative Musician.......2007-05-27

As a Rock based drummer seeking creative inspiration, this CD (along with anything that Miles did....and those involved with him) was the key to another world. I always look forward to hearing it and turning others onto it because it is truly one of the most exciting, creative and inspirational CD's that I own. It is like Jazz musicians rocking out, but in a way that was fresh compared to the typical 70's fusion that came to represent the genre(or sub-genre).This to me represents Music as Art...period.

    5 out of 5 stars Gateway...apt title indeed..........2006-08-25

This album is completely mindblowing. From the cascading guitar runs to the heroic and athletic drums, let alone the magnificent bass lines. This is the ULTIMATE POWER TRIO! Rush: eat yer heart out! Peace - jacobs

5 out of 5 stars Spooky Fusion and Ferocious Jazz Brilliance.......2004-12-09

This 1975 release on the ECM label had more ferocity and fangs than your average ECM disc of the time. Having come fresh off a recording session with Oregon's Colin Walcott for his Cloud Dance album, the three musicians decided to stir up some electrified and inspired mayhem of their own.

Bassist Dave Holland leads the charge on "Backwoods Song", starting innocently enough with a country-ish groove, then enters DeJohnette to give it further drive, then Abercrombie steers it toward the outer fringes of the woods, so to speak, with a vaguely unsettling, warbling melody, leading to a bluesy turnaround. From there, JA takes you to the darkest most unknown parts of these woods with his relentless guitar musings. "Waiting" is Dave Hollands' hypnotic bass solo piece that definitely conveys that feeling very well in fact. "May Dance" is a sunnier, more upbeat bop-inspired romp with Abercrombie leading the way with a clean yet edgy jazz tone from his axe.

Things get more intense with "Unshielded Desire" a duet of Abercrombie and DeJohnette that recalls the fiery exchanges of Coltrane and Elvin Jones from a decade earlier, both musicians relentlessly search for new melodic ideas as the piece almost blows itself apart. "Jamal" is a beautifully mysterious and enigmatic interaction between Abercrombie and Holland, To close on a high note, there is "Sorcery 1", starting with menacing spook noises from Abercrombie and equally menacing percussion noises weave in and out, building in intensity until Abercrombie roars in with some of the spookiest long sustained notes this side of Hendrix as DeJohnette unleashes violent explosions of drums and cymbals while Holland roars authoritatively underneath them eventually winding down as spooks are flying out of the speakers (LOL).

As is typical with ECM recordings, the overall ambience is spacious as all outdoors, yet the instruments are so crisp (especially drums and bass) while Abercrombie is recorded with just enough reverb and distance to give him, to my ears, one of the most genuinely unsettling, spooky and unique electric guitar sounds of the time, he sounded like NOBODY else.

Fusion with a strong emphasis on the JAZZ part of the equation with that kind of looseness combined with the ferocity of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. A great postcard from when creativity was the norm!

4 out of 5 stars The Lyrical Swing of Dave Holland.......2004-07-05

Somewhat rawer in both tone and composition than your average ECM mid-70s release, this first meeting between guitarist Abercrombie, bassist Holland and drummer DeJohnette grooves along with the fire of early fusion (Abercrombie's tone is usually clean, yet he's clearly capable of exploding into shards of noise, and just dig DeJohnette's peerless attack), yet remains true to the melodic & structural compexities of classic jazz. The highlights are many, yet it's the relentless swing of Dave Holland on the opener, 'Back-Woods Song' that continues to draw me in. Essential for electric guitar fans, and a good investment for any jazz enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars a postcard from a moment when things were possible.......2000-11-16

Its sort of depressing to listen to this cd in 2000. In 1975 when it came out it was possible for three really open musicians to get together, play some pretty over-the-top music, and here's the depressing part, ACTUALLY GET IT RECORDED AND WIDELY DISTRIBUTED. These guys were alternative before the term was coined. Some electronica fan will probably write the same review in 25 years after that genre gets codified if it hasn't already.

OK, so much for the sociology, how about the music? Imagine Hendrix hadn't died, and instead found a rhythm section that was his creative match. Serious electric guitar without the how-many-notes-per-second-can-I-play mindlessness into which both fusion and heavy metal would degenerate. "Backwoods Song" with its simple bass groove opens the album and draws in the listener. "Unshielded Desire" states emphatically that this ain't your father's jazz, and "Sorcery I," which closes, is a kind of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" for intellectuals.

4 out of 5 stars Munich, Germany and it's 1957.......2004-05-13

I was 10 years old when my parents bought this LP to play in our new Stereo Record Player. You see, my father was in the Army and my family joined him in 1957 for a three year tour of duty in Munich. This is genuine Oktoberfest Music to which I was exposed at that age. Many of these songs are now "corny", as I learned when I revisited Munich in Spring 2001. I love them and they bring joyous childhood memories to me. I have been looking for this "album" for many years because the original copy can no longer be played. I even looked for it in Munich back in 2001 to no avail. Thanks, Amazon for finding it for me. Maybe someone out there will enjoy at much as I did and will continue to do so.

3 out of 5 stars Ich hab mein Herz in Heidelberg verloren.......2003-12-17

    Hey Guys!
The translation of the title "Ich hab mein Herz in Heidelberg verloren" ist "I've lost my heart in Heidelberg" and it's not a story about Hertz experiences, it's about a man who's telling how he had fallen in love in Heidelberg. I just wanted to tell u this so you now what this song really is about. I please u to excuse my writingmistakes in this text, but I'm an original German not wearing lederhosen ;-)....PS: The song Lilly Marleen is not the best drink song, thats true but the writing with double e is correct, cause its a dialect...have fun,bye

    1 out of 5 stars That`s disgusting!!!.......2002-05-19

I`d like to know who in the world has compilated this ( and some other CDs of the same niveau)CD!!! It`s so full of clìches that I don`t know where to start. Yes, some of these songs are kinda folk drinking songs, others like "Der treue Husar" are rather Mardi Gràs songs, yes I know, that`s about drinking, too, but there`s a difference that would take too long to explain ( by the way , normaly there is only a shortened version sung, for who wants to sing a song in merryment about a husar who returned from war only to find his lady love has died of a fever??).
And that what hurt me most is " Lili Marleen" ( with two E!!).
This song deffinitely noone sings in Germany regularly, exspecialy when drunk!! Those, who want to buy this CD and still have relatives who where in the 2nd world war, should ask them about this song. Does the whole world still believe that all the Germans in the world wear Lederhosen and a drooping mustache??
By the way, whoever wants to hear a sample of German sung in a dialect that I would call "thoroughly drunk" is right to buy this crap. But do me a favour, next time you see one of the homeless on the streets, buy him and yourself a bottle of cheap strong spirits, and share some good old German drinking songs!!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Album to Come from Germany in the last 50 years!.......2000-10-30

These are the GREATEST German beer songs ever! What ingenuity, what novelty! The lyrics of "Ich Hab Mein Herz In Heidelberg Verloren" astounded me, my literal translation of this song title is "I have my Hertz In Heidelberg, Darling" and it is all about a gentleman who walks into a bar and orders a beer, bemoaning his fate to be stuck with a Hertz Sales Receptionist from Heidelberg. Ah, the sweet sorrow of it all. These songs are drunk best with beer. So have your bartender pull you a tall Pilsner while you sit back and enjoy the bittersweet nostalgia of these great german songs.

4 out of 5 stars Gigantic Wall Of Sound.......2006-05-29

Bongzilla's 'Getaway' has one of the largest, fuzziest, monumental guitar tones I have ever put my ears through. Smoking dope is the priority for these guys, and making an album full of unbelievably fatass riffs must come a close second. My only problem is the vocal department, Id actually rather it not be there. The singer is mostly drained out by the huge guitars, but nonetheless his screechy thin voice is a little on the grating side after a while, hence 4 not 5 stars.

But frankly I don't mind too much when the band come out with riff onslaughts such as the opener 'Greenthumb'. You think you've heard the guitar tone and the drums, you think the riff they're playing is as heavy as it gets, `cos its pretty daym heavy. Then suddenly they hit the pedal that must be labelled 'MONSTER FUZZ' as your head is cleanly swiped off. Rarely can a stoner/doom band take a very simple riff and blow you away by the sheer enormity of their sound. Many try, but most become boring. Bongzilla perfect this.

And they can create song structures too, my biggest complaint for fellow riff-monsters Electric Wizard who often sacrifice this area. The title track, and my personal highlight showcases their ability to write sections inside a song with varying time signatures and tempo changes. The main riff is also huge by the way, in case you doubted.

If you're into stoner/doom metal, and you have an addiction to colossal riffs with giant fuzz tones, then do yourself a favour and get this one. My only complaint is the rather grating vocals that detract a star, but apart from that this is a fine addition to your collection.

For fans of Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin, Karma to Burn, Sleep...

5 out of 5 stars rocky mountain, take me to the sky.......2004-04-16

First off, Bongzilla rules, especially their more recent stuff like "Gateway" and "Apogee." Bongzilla plays the perfect kind of stoner/doom metal: completely heavy, but with a deep sense of groove that gets you nodding your heavy-lidded head along with them. Standout tracks are "Greenthumb," "Sunnshine Green," and "Keefmaster."

5 out of 5 stars a boot full of sludgey stoner rock, ready to kick your ass.......2003-10-30

bongzilla keeps on with the stereotype, but its aaaaaa ooookkkkaaayyy brother. besides the obvious lyrical content, this is disturbingly brutal, and crushing stoner rock that's faster than most stoner bands. like a blur of heaviness, that brings you to the "top of the keef moutain"

      buy it

      definetely buy it

5 out of 5 stars hadn't really heard anything from them, but.............2003-07-21

I saw them at a local pizzeria tonight in Nashville and they were an extemily heavy/intense act with a groove along the lines of earlier Sleep albums I believe. Yea, I'm not usually too into the "gutteral" vocal style either but live it just upped the intensity and wasn't excessive, used appropriately I guess. I wouldn't really have known the lyrics are [substance] related, I just got thought the overall feel/vibe was slowly/deeply medatative with a nice balance of bass-driven sludge and possessed roaring. maybe a cross between the melvins and "today is the day." Definitely worth my [money] though.

5 out of 5 stars The pinnacle of stoner rock.......2003-07-10

This album has everything you could look for in stoner rock... heavy ... riffs that are catchy and pleasing to the ear. Nothing compares to jumping in your car, putting on your 70's aviator sun glasses, and putting in this cd at full volume. Seriously, this album is perfect for driving. The band takes the southern grooves of Eyehategod, add in various marijuana-related samples, and puts an almost black metalish screeching voice over it all. This combines to make a really unique and fresh sound. Once again, Relapse has the best selection in bands.

A beautiful recording featuring the inaugural Papal Blessing when Pope John Paul II was first named Pope. Hear his voice as he bestows his first Papal Blessing to the world in English, Italian, and his native tongue of Polish. The release also features angelic hymns of the church including the beloved "Ave Maria" and Mozart's "Magnificat." It also contains a special souvenir booklet on John Paul's life from childhood to his days as a Cardinal and features a letter on his behalf that expresses his appreciation, acceptance, and blessing for the recording. It is a truly magnificent release.
