great performances; unfortunate recording.......2007-06-14
Everything glowing that other reviewers have said about this performance is mostly true. I would have given it 5 stars if not for a problem with the recording, and it's a bad enough problem that I hesitate giving it even 3 stars. It's her vocals, which are obviously the centerpiece of the disc.
Don't get me wrong - she sings these songs wonderfully. But the recording of her voice is problematic. It buzzes very slightly, particularly when she puts a little oomph into it or reaches for the higher register notes. It's not hugely distorted, but it's enough to catch your ear and make you wonder if you're really hearing what you think you're hearing. The effect is comparable to making her voice just a little bit fuzzy around the edges and stands in stark and striking contrast to the finely detailed recording of the accompanying musicians. On my first listening, I was afraid the problem was in my equipment, that my home listening room speakers had been damaged somehow. Now, after hearing the disc on my car stereo, and through several different pairs of earphones and headphones, I've come to the conclusion the problem is the recording and not my system.
This is especially frustrating when everything else about the disc is great, and frankly it's incomprehensible coming from Telarc. I'd send the disc back for an exchange, but I can't imagine it could be a problem with my particular copy, or even any batch or run of discs. But I could be wrong. If anyone else has had this problem, or if they have the disc and can say without question that their copy does *not* suffer from this effect, please let me know. For reference, I've found it to be most readily audible in "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" and "These Foolish Things," though it's there for the most part throughout the disc.
excellent.......2006-09-05
The cd and the choice of the songs are very good. I don't regret having bought this cd. I didn't know Cheryl Bentyne. I heard her through Amazon.com
"Girl Talk . . . Inconsequential Things That Men Don't Really Care To Know" .......2005-12-07
Cheryl Bentyne epitomizes good music and her voice is simply marvelous. She sings these time-tested standards so beautifully. Having loved the music of The Manhattan Transfer in the eighties, I am not a new fan of Ms. Bentyne. She is indeed an awesome vocalist be it as a solo performer or with the Manhattan Transfer, which is very well-known for their hits and my favorites - the Grammy Award winning song "Birdland," "The Boy From New York City," "Shaker Song" and "Embraceable You." This unique ensemble has collected at least ten Grammy Awards to add to their credentials.
This recording is a testament that Ms. Bentyne has one of the most exquisite vocals in the jazz scene and her singing style is simply amazing. She is backed up by talented jazz musicians namely: Corey Allen (piano/organ) and he's also the album producer/arranger/director, Kenny Barron (piano), John Patitucci (bass), Lewis Nash (drums), Don Alas (percussion), David Newman (tenor sax), Chuck Mangione (flugelhorn-solo), Mark Kibble and Alvin Chea (background vocals).
My personal favorites include one of the greatest songs ever written and composed by George and Ira Gershwin - "They Can't Take That Away From Me" which features the wonderful flugelhorn playing of one of my favorite jazz artists, Chuck Mangione, who is famous for his hit tune "Feels So Good."
You'll also enjoy listening to Ray Noble's beautiful song "The Very Thought Of You," which according to Ms. Bentyne is her very favorite song from this collection. It's so remarkable and this is the best female vocal version I've heard so far.
Her charming interpretation of "Love Me Or Leave Me" gave this song a whole new style and elegance. "These Foolish Things" is so delightfully sentimental that I had to hit the repeat button and listen to it again and again and again. Ditto with "It Might As Well Be Spring," which has a Latin flavor, kind of mambo-ish rhythm to it that makes it a real sheer beauty. I truly adore this version. The intro and arrangements are somewhat similar to "Shaker Song."
And . . . my absolute number one choice from this collection is "Girl Talk," a song composed and penned by Bobby Troup and Neal Hefti. Her interpretation and the arrangement are so sublime and I just loved the chorus. But let me tell you, I guess they love shopping for clothes, purses and shoes more than engaging in "Girl Talk." At least speaking for myself - I just have that "Mind Your Own Business!" philosophy.
"We like to chat about the dresses we will wear tonight
We chew the fat about our tresses and the neighbor's fight
Inconsequential things that men don't really care to know
Become essential things that women find so apropos
It's just a dame, we're all the same
It's just a game, we call it "Girl Talk"
"Girl Talk" . . .
We all 'meow' about the ups and downs of all our friends
The who, the how, the why
We dish the dirt, it never ends
The goddess touch, they love so much
All mortal males behold
And though we joke, we wouldn't trade you
For a ton of gold
So Honey stay, don't walk away
Just hear me say that after "Girl Talk,"
Talk to me."
In conclusion, I heartily recommend this jazzy and classy CD for your listening pleasure. It's the kind of music you will love to listen to forever and a day!
P.S. I couldn't wait until I get hold of her "Moonlight Serenade" CD.

What a Pleasure!.......2005-09-04
Ok, I have to admit that I bought this CD only because my daughter had recently participated in a jazz concert at her high school with Cheryl Bentyne. I thought it would be fun to have a CD by someone that my daughter had performed with. It is not only fun to know that, but the CD is a pleasure to listen to as well!
Talk of amazing!.......2005-08-28
Cheryl Bentyne is super in this compilation that includes many old classics. As a follower of the Manhattan Transfer since the 70's and one privileged to see Cheryl in a solo concert in her home town, I am always in awe of her talent. Incredible!

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Enjoyed this compilation of early Duchin recordings. If you enjoy the Duchin sound, then this disc will succeed in providing you with great music.
Not Impressed.......2007-03-25
I'm sorry to say that I'm not impressed with this set of recordings. I had seen the movie, The Eddie Duchin Story, and was curious about his music. (I am also a piano playing pharmacist like Eddie.) However, the quality of the piano playing in the movie is significantly better than on this CD. Sorry.

Customer Reviews:
Flat-out amazing old bluegrass.......2002-07-11
Banjo whiz Don Reno and guitarist Red Smiley were one of the most dynamic and bluegrass acts of the 1950s, singing zippy songs that framed Smiley's dense, deft fingerpicking and Reno's breathtaking banjo work. In the 1940s, Reno just barely missed out on a slot as the plunker in Bill Monroe's Blue Grass boys, so history pegs him as a following in the footsteps of the great Earl Scruggs, although in fact Reno had developed his similarly dazzling banjo style right around the same time as Scruggs had, and was no less amazing. When you hear these classic tracks from the duo's King Records days, Reno's three-finger style will make your jaw drop... This excellent UK import supplants various '70s LPs that covered the same turf, collecting hit songs such as "I'm Using My Bible For A Roadmap" and "I Know You're Married," as well as little instrumental h-bombs like "Crazy Finger Tune" and "Choking The Strings," and the hillbilly classic, "Country Boy Rock'n'Roll." It's all great stuff; if you can find this disc, don't hesitate to snap it up.

Just Plain Fun!!!.......2006-04-25
You do NOT have to be as old as I am to enjoy this collection! If you are not singing along with these tunes, I will be amazed. Another collection of "old standards," it is not "too old" to enjoy. Very rich treatments of songs we all know, and most of us loved. So-called "modern music" has so much to learn, and offers so little to be truly appreciated, by comparison! You'll LOVE it!
Great listening can be found on this C.D.!.......2005-10-15
"It's The Talk of the Town" was the first Ray Conniff record that featured the singers actually performing the words instead of the singers performing to the sounds of the music. From It's The Talk of the Town" to "You're an Old Smoothie" to Buttons and Bows" its enjoyable listening for everyone. You won't be disappointed by this in your C.D. collection!!

Product Description
O.S.Ben & Renzo's debut album Talk Of The Town is one of those few that make you want to hit repeat time after time. From the raw opening lines of 'What We Do' to going out with a bang on 'Reaction,' Talk Of The Town lives up to it s name without missing a beat. Far from being your standard rap duo, O.S.Ben and Renzo differ in many ways. While O.S.Ben is hustling with a bottle of Tanqueray at his side, Renzo is trying to survive without falling into the same traps as so many others. This struggle to rise to above less than ideal surroundings can be hard as hell, but at the same time defines who you come to be- and this contrast is part of what makes this team shine on so many levels. O.S.Ben's larger-than-life tone and hype, together with Renzo's tenacious sensibility make for not only solid rhymes, but soulful hooks that will have you bobbing your head and singing along from the very first time you hear them. Influenced as much by Curtis Mayfield and Pink Floyd as Dr. Dre and Outkast, O.S.Ben & Renzo lean more toward the musical side of hip-hop. When paired with producer/multi-instrumentalist O.S.Ben s always melodic grooves, their distinct vocal presence becomes even more engaging. And attention to detail could not be any more clear: From tracking and mixing in their own Time Warp Studios, to mastering by none other than Brian "Big Bass" Gardner at Bernie Grundman Mastering, Talk Of The Town holds it's own against any album out there today.

Die Fledermaus/Gypsy Baron CD.......2007-02-08
Die Fledermaus has long been a favourite of mine and this CD coupled with highlights from the Gypsy Baron makes it outstanding. I'm thoroughly enjoying listening to it. Judy
