5 out of 5 stars Gore Obsessed.......2006-09-29

This is good death metal album as usual, by those guys. For those who like brutal death metal should give it a try! This is not their best, but it has solid songs and musicanship is top notch as usual. Standout tracks are gloomy When Death Replaces Life with creative harmonies and brutal slow section! Amother obvious standouts are opening Hatchet To the Head. This one has cool brutal riffs and perfect vokills. "Pit of Zombies" has avesome catchy feel to it and nice guitar solo.
"Dormant Bodies Burtsting" has amazing riffs and scary atmosphere as well!
Overall, a bit weaker then their 2006 "Kill" BUT GOOD!

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE.......2006-02-09

I bought CC's "VILE" on cassette tape a year or two ago, and still listen to it over and over in my car to this day. I just picked up my second CC album, "GORE OBSESSED", on CD today. It had a black cardboard slipcase covering up the front artwork, for good reason. If any little kid saw this album sitting on the shelf, it would scar his mind. Whoever does the artwork for this band is extremely talented. Musically, this album is INCREDIBLE and JAW DROPPING. The riffs, basslines, drums, and lyrics stick in my head. They are brutal, in-your-face, and memorable. All of the members in this band are extremely talented. I can't wait for their next CD. I heared it's going to be called "Kill".

3 out of 5 stars An acquired taste........2006-01-13

Ok, for starters, I should state that I am not a death metal fanatic. I primarily listen to classic and progressive rock and classical music like 19th century opera. So obviously I am an unlikely person to be giving this a positive review. However I am also a fan of Horror movies, and that is why I got into cannibal corpse. I tried unsuccessfully to enjoy their music several years ago. I loved the concept of the band, their cover art, their disgusting lyrics, so I purchased a copy of Butchered at Birth, and frankly I couldn't stand it. It wasn't the music, I enjoy some thrash metal (Slayer is a particular favorite of mine), I just couldn't like Chris Barne's voice, it pissed me off. I gave away my copy and felt pissed that I had wasted my money. So now, six years later, my curiosity had risen and I decided to get another album, this time Gore Obsessed, featuring Corpsegrinder as the vocalist. I must say I like Corpsegrinder much better. He still has that same cookie monster growl quality, but I like being able to understand the lyrics, plus he has more range and variation in his vocals. Barnes just sounds like he's throwing up, he could be saying complete gibberish and it would sound exactly the same.

So regarding this album, the lyrics are great fun, really disgusting graphic violence that sounds like a cheap b horror film. And the music is really great, varying tempos and technically complex riffs and screaming guitar solos that sound like the screams of one of this album's many victims. However, as I said, this is not for everyone. I have to be in a very specific mood in order to enjoy this music, but at least its proof that you do not have to exclusively like death metal in order to appreciate this album.

4 out of 5 stars when death replace gay music!!.......2005-11-26

I must say that its my first cannibal corpse purchase, and it kicks a** big time. I'm used to bands like slayer, deicide or nile, but this is a new favorite in my list. At times it sounds like Dying Fetus meeting Bolt Thrower meeting Deicide meeting Pantera. Still it has that great twist that make CC so good. Music wise, CC is very complex.. The tempo and riffs changes at every ten seconds. I wonder how these guys can remember those songs live....... Lyrically, those people who said that the lyrics are funny are half right. Yeah they aer funny, but not in the way of a joke. Its more in the way of saying: Oh my god, that is so sick. With a smile on your face. Anyhow great album but not for everyone, this is why I gave it four stars. By the way the bonus track of the cover of metallica's "no remorse" is awesome. It reminds us of the time when metallica wasn't gay (before the black album).
Favorite tracks: Hatchet to the head, Dormant bodies bursting, compelled to lacerate, sanded faceless, When death replace life.
If your a death metal fan buy it, if not: Go f*** yourself.

Five stars here folks. But what would you expect from ol 'Wino'. The guy puts his heart and soul into the music. Scott ignores all trends, and just plays the stuff the way he wants to hear it. It's good to see all these out of print albums coming out of the wood works. If you're into any of his stuff, don't hesitate to add this one to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars you took the words right outta my mouth... I can die happy too.......2006-05-10

my thoughts exactly. I have been waiting for years to have this album re-issued. I have been bugging Jadd at Meteor City records for the past 2 years once I heard that there were rumors flying around about Lunar Womb being put out again. this was actually supposed to come out a year and a half ago. more than once, I came really close to spending a butt-load of money on over-priced used copies of the original version of Lunar Womb (on Hellhound records) on EBay. but I held out, and tried to stay patient. finally, my waiting has paid off. in the entire "stoner-rock" genre (God, I hate that term), this is probably one of the most important albums. a true classic from one of the greatest singer/guitarists since Hendrix, the almighty Wino. also, probably the best Obsessed album. now, the only thing left is for a label to re-issue The Church Within. I already have my copy, but there are tons of other Obsessed fans out there that need it.

5 out of 5 stars Charged With Disregard.......2005-09-15

I'm not sure I could site a particular favorite from The Obsessed. I've been listening to one or the other of Wino's drug guzzling bands since the mid 1980s, and even though I'd choose Spirit Caravan as the most productive and 'alive', if you like his style, than any band the guy's involved with has that inimitable sound and feel; downpouring riffs and solo blazin' spirituality. Definitely needs to experienced live!

"The Church Within" was supposed to be that big break; getting signed to a major label, touring with White Zombie ...that is until label support fell through, leaving the band stranded and in debt. That aside, the recording itself is awesome. Although released by a major label, there was no diluting of sound or substance. Some of the material found on it was written several years prior to the The Church Within release, and serves as a lasting monument to Wino's early songwriting craft.

For those of you who may be newcomers to Wino's bands(The Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, Place of Skulls, The Hidden Hand)and have discovered the most recent, The Hidden Hand, you'll find similar warnings in earlier lyrics:
"By the power Big Brother has vested
Your decisions must be honest and true
Your courage and your faith will be tested
Our children's futures are resting with you"
(To Protect and To Serve)

"Lunar Womb," and the S/T are also recommended if like this one, and especially the double vinyl version of The Obsessed compilation, "Incarnate," which includes several demo recordings and other material from The Church Within era lineup.

3 out of 5 stars GUESS I AM IN MINORITY ON THIS ONE..........2005-07-19

dont get me wrong, this is a solid release with excellent songwriting and musicianship - i just feel that it isnt quite heavy enough (for my tastes).i prefer the earlier Obsessed releases, and Spirit Caravan.
dont know if this was due to being on a major label (columbia),but it just doesnt have the crunch that i need....

4 out of 5 stars The Obsessed - 'The Church Within' (Columbia).......2005-03-27

Most fans would probably agree that this, the band's third effort is their best CD.The only way I even found out about this stoner metal outfit is the fact that Spirit Caravan's Scott 'Wino' Weinrock was once involved with them. The Obsessed has been influenced to some degree by the likes of White Zombie,Pink Fairies,Motorhead,L7 and Black Flag. With a list like that,I knew I had to hunt down a copy of this disc.I liked what I heard.Tunes I found most enlightening were "Climate Of Despair","Skybone",the doomish "Mourning","Blind Lightning" and "Decimation".Should appeal to fans of Sleep,Nebula,Soil and possibly Monster Magnet and Candlemass.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best rock albums of 1994... and Wino's best work.......2004-07-31

Most fans of The Obsessed will probably agree that not only is this their best album, but out of all of the bands & projects that Wino has been involved with over the past 20 years, these are probably his finest recordings. this is the last incarnation of Wino's band that originally formed in the early 80's. when Wino started The Obsessed, they were only together for a few years, before he broke up the band to join Saint Vitus as their singer (he only played guitar and lent his songwriting skills to a few of their songs). in 1990, he reformed The Obsessed with a new bassist and drummer, and put out the 1991 Lunar Womb album on Hellhound records which is now extremely rare and out of print (but is scheduled for re-release early next year on Meteor City records). he then recruited yet another new bassist, and a few years later issued The Church Within, their last album and ironically, distributed by Columbia records. this album is a truly great slab of raw, solid, meaty, rock power. there's some great playing by all members, but especially some inspiring guitar work and vocals by the legendary Wino. this album has been out of print for the past few years, with no tentative plans of being re-issued, so if you happen to come across this gem either on E-Bay, on Amazon, or at a used music store, do not hesitate to pick it up. you will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars essential wino.......2003-09-28

this is a ride from start to finish. good sony/columbia production. the album rocks ,no clunkers on this one . heavy intensity through out.guitarwork is a++ , vocals great as well. a little more dark than the spirit caravan stuff. awsome album. i just wish i could get my hands on the lunar womb album released before this one. buy this cd!

    Product Description

Warface is a three piece death metal band from San Diego. They formed in 2000 and released a self-titled EP in 2001 that has made a big name for them in the underground metal scene. Laura Christine is a rarity in the extreme metal scene being a female handling all guitar rhythms and solos landing her, her own line of Warface V guitars with KxK Guitars. Scott Ellis has been featured as one of the world's best drummers along side Chris Adler of Lamb of God and Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy. Signing with Deathquake Records in 2004, Warface was taken into the studio to work with Alan Sanderson to record their much anticpated full length album, Insanity of the Obsessed.

Whilst these are great to own on CD it's unfortunate that SPV/Steamhammer has done it so cheaply and with scant care for the originals. On Obsessed By Evil the track listing is completely wrong.Intros which are not separate songs are counted as songs (for example Outbreak Of Evil, a 4 and a half minute song comes up as only the 14 second intro).Furthermore, the last track, Volcanic Slut isn't even on the CD!!! The only reason I worked this out is cos I have the LP. The sooner someone reissues this properly the better.

"In the Sign of Evil" and "Obssessed..." are the only albums before Bathory's "Under the Sign of the Black Mark" that can be construed as proto-black metal. The vocals, atmosphere, and attitude in general have to be experienced, for anyone to understand truly what "dark music" means. Alternately despairing, inspiring, enraging...this is hard to top.
"Persecution Mania" steps all over Slayer's "Reign in Blood".
    Look at it that way...

    5 out of 5 stars Germans f*ckin rule.......2004-08-25

They got the thrash down, they got great drumming, and the monstrous voice is a fantastic diabolic touch.A long and dark walk through the world of Sodom.Overlooking this album would be your first mistake as a thrasher.Bobenhagel and Christ Passion-the key tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Three of the Best 80's Thrash Albums.......2004-06-27

While others have disappeared, changed beyond recognition, or just started, Sodom was one of the pioneers and remains true to their roots to this day. One of the "big 3" of German thrash with Kreator and Destruction, Sodom pumps big sound as a 3-piece. Motorhead and Venom influences are quite prevalent on these, their first three albums. The albums were originally released in the following order (and unfortunately they appear in order of production quality in this package--best to worst):

IN THE SIGN OF EVIL (1984) - debut EP. Extremely evil sounding with lots of heavy breathing and grunting. Somewhat juvenile, but a very powerful, fast album that sets the tone for thousands of future death metal bands, most notably Sepultura. The production quality is excellent. Witchhunter's drumming is insane--galloping double-bass with amazing solos at nearly every time change.

OBSESSED BY CRUELTY (1986) - first full length album. This is what should be the band's best album, had it not been for the production. In fact, it could have been one of the best thrash albums of all time. Once again, Witchhunter's drumming is excellent--he traded-in some of the solos for tighter, faster sound. Unfortunately, the drums are the only instrument that even sound half decent. The guitar work is excellent with lots of good hooks, but with the overall tinny sound, the guitar is often lost to a hiss heard over the entire album. The vocals sound distant and were poorly mixed. I can't wait for the day that Sodom returns to the studio to rerecord this masterpiece and do it the justice it deserves.

PERSECUTION MANIA (1987) - this one put Sodom on the map. By most fans, this is their number one album, with the followup "Agent Orange" being a close and very similar sounding second. Produced by the thrashmaster Harris Johns (also known for his work with Helloween, Coroner, Kreator and Voivod). Witchhunter once again tames his drumming for a slightly slower, more consistent tempo and new guitarist Frank Blackfire lends the band a Motorhead-esque full sound that they continue to churn out today. Definitely one of the top ten albums every thrash fan should own. The "Expurse of Sodomy" EP bonus tracks (Sodomy and Lust, Conqueror and My Atonement) typically packaged with "Persecution.." are present and are the pinnacle of this collection, combining the brutally evil early sound with Persecution production quality.

5 out of 5 stars Hardcore Thrash/Death these albums are brutal and they rule!.......2004-04-24

This is a 2-cd set with 2 albums on the first cd and one one the other. The first cd with In the Sign of Evil is the Harder of the two with songs like blasphemer and witching metal sounding like prototype death metal. The songs on these cd's are some of the fastest thrash around, think beneath the remains sepultura style maybe even faster, the only thing that kind of sucks is Tom angelrippers voice back then was kind of weird. His voice is way better now. Trust me, his voice isn't as bad as like Steve Souza's or anything and it won't keep you from enjoying the hell out of these two cd's. 5 stars for some of the fastest hardest thrash around.

5 out of 5 stars Black Market Material.......1999-10-01

A copy of this album got to El Salvador in 1987 and it became so popular as it was the only copy available in town. The price went up 10 times as the record was so good everyone wanted to have it. This album is a pioneer in the speed metal realm where Kreator and Slayer had also succeed.

3 out of 5 stars Intense German Thrash.......1999-03-05

This CD combines the first 2 releases by the pride of the Ruhr, Sodom.Their debut mini-album, In The Sign Of Evil, is extremely fast and heavy, although it may have benefitted from guitarist Grave Violator (love that name!) using some decent pedals! The lyrics are definitely from the Venom school of Irreverence, containing such treasures as `My life begins at midnight twelve, masturbate to kill myself' (from `Blasphemer'), and such clever rhyming schemes as `Witch, bitch, no sleep in Sodom' (from `Witching Metal'), all barked out in a very disturbing guttural grunt. Unfortunately,as the new packaging does not have the lyric sheets that accompanied the original vinyl releases, deciphering the lyrics will prove an uphill struggle for the uninitiated. Also unfortunate regarding the packaging is the absence of the band pictures, especially those on `Ìn The Sign..',which include an Angelripper with a serious bowl haircut and an inverted crucifix practically embedded into his throat! Nevertheless,`In The Sign...' is a brilliant piece of intense Black Metal, and its power and speed make it one of the best releases of its type - certainly more intense than Kreator's debut (Endless Pain), fine and all a release as that was. However, what drags down the quality of this disc to a 3* rating is the inclusion of `Obsessed by Cruelty'. It proved to be a big disappointment for fans of their inspired debut. It's songs tend to sound poor and indistinct, and overall, almost tedious. It may be of interest to those who have the original European vinyl release from 1986 that what is contained on this disc is in fact the version that was released in the US at the time. Both contain the same songs, but with an obviously different sound. Thankfully, `In The Sign..' appears in its' brilliant original state. Sodom released many subsequent albums, of varying quality. However, if you love the likes of Venom, Possessed, Dark Angel, Bathory, Kreator, etc., make sure and get your hands on this, and their brilliant 3rd release, `Persecution Mania', the CD of which contains the great `Sodomy and Lust' ep,as well as a reworked `Outbreak of Evil' (from `In The Sign...'), and a very impressive rendition of Motorhead's `Iron Fist'. Finally, their `Agent Orange' Cd is also worth investigating, and contains a good cover of Tank's `Don't Walk Away'. Enjoy this legendary German band, and Witchhunter's outstanding drumming! Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Bloody Brilliant.......2007-07-04

Glorious and Idiotic share many of the early and brilliant Jazz Butcher songs also on the Bloody Nonsense compilation, now long out of print. The great guitar, and fantastically insightful lyrics make this a must-have for any lover of clever britpop. Let me say again, 'Must-have'.

        4 out of 5 stars Kenny's Ghost.......2003-10-29

JBC has never yet made a five-star LP, and they probably never will, but that's no reason not to keep hoping. This live effort starts so well that its only challenge is to keep on building from the opening third...and it can't quite manage it. Who cares? It's great anyway. Best of all, it's acoustic, the JBC unglued and unplugged. The guitar work, especially on the quieter numbers, suggests the jazz work of Kenny Burrell.

4 out of 5 stars Live JB !.......2000-05-24

I was also nicely surprised by the release and live quality of this CD. As a compulsive JB buyer, it was an Amazon "instabuy". It is great to see these boys release soemthing again after all this time, and it does not disappoint either. My favorites like Roadrunner and Big Foot Motel are in a styling groove.

Having said that, I find it a little depressing and irritating that the JB's extensive early works are not available any more. THis is a great album, but frankly, I don't think it has the energy and quirkyness of "Live In Hamburg" and I don't want to live in the past, but I remeber being totally enamoured with "Sex & Travel" and "The Gift Of Music". It is criminal that that work is no longer published.

Anyone out there hear that ? Anyone ?

THE JAZZ BUTCHER CONSPIRACY Glorious and Idiotic (ROIR)

The jaw-dropping bids on eBay give some indication of the Jazz Butcher's proverbial cult following: a digital copy of 1982's A Scandal in Bohemia, something of a post-punk masterpiece ignored by the critics, recently sold for almost $200, and many of the out-of-print CDs earn triple-digit offers. Copyright hassles with the now defunct Glass Records, keepers of the Butcher's early catalog, have prevented re-releases of the most sought-after disks, while a 1996 compilation with many of the best old cuts is already out-of-print. Thus, ROIR's new Glorious and Idiotic, recorded live in Hamburg during the Butcher's recent tour (a reunion circuit with original guitarist Max Eider that had the Internet cultists buzzing), is less a standard concert disk than a way around the copyright trouble and a chance for fans to access some great rare material. The thirteen songs, most of them old Butcher mainstays, are crisp and intimate - a big improvement from the live Western Family CD released in 1993 - from the loungy chords of "Partytime" and "Just Like Betty Page," to the clean pop of "Rain" (and, why the hell not, the ubiquitous cover of the Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner"). There's little new ground, but that's hardly the point, and fans will appreciate a chance to hear some vintage Jazz Butcher without giving their rent money to eBay. Newcomers, meanwhile, can sample the best of an obscure British artist whose talent, if not luck and timing, has been as formidable as any in the history of alternative rock.
