The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

A Fine Soundtrack of a Fine Movie.......2007-07-15

I basically love the movie, because it's poetic along with Montana wilderness and I am a fly-fisherman. I have just bought this CD as my background music while I am tying flies. And it works very very well. Each track reminds me of each moment of the movie, especially, tracks from Track 25 "Yes, Quite a Day" to Track 31 "Hauted by Waters" just make me poignant. An exclusive interview with the composer is also very unique and worth to hear about the background of the movie. "The Moment That Could Not Last" last only 1:24, how about in our real life? Is it gonna be like Paul's? I am hautend by this soundtrack.

Personally, this is one of the absolute BEST soundtracks I have ever listened to. The music is calming, soothing, and truly wonderful. The music is so well put together and nicely coordinated and I feel like I am watching the movie again...it also makes great to read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books too. Try it...you might be suprised how well it fits. :)

Mark Isham's score for the motion picture A River Runs Through It is one of the most memorable and emotionally captivating film scores of all time. The arrangements of strings, piano, woodwinds create a meditative and reflective range of music throughout the film capturing all the emotions of this powerful drama about an American family in rural Montana. It is at once deeply haunting, moving, nostalgic and sentimental and captures the innocence and beauty of nature and childhood, as well as darker themes of rebellion and tragedy. There is a profound sense of emotion that is embedded within the music that sweeps over me every time I hear it. A combination of happiness, sadness, excitement, and reflection. There is something simply sweeping and majestic within his music. I couldn't think of anything else that would better compliment the film. Highly recommended.

great work from Jim Steinman.......2006-06-16

Jim Steinman, known for his operatic-style rock music (Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, etc.) has shown a more classic style of him in this one-of-a-kind musical. He takes several styles from the Civil War era and twists them with modern musical treatments.

You can hear many bits and pieces of music used in this album that Steinman uses much later in some of his rock songs, such as the intro to Making Love Out of Nothing at All, chorale phrases from The Future Ain't What it Used to Be and many others.

If you are a Steinman fan, this is a must!! Ray Earl Fox does a great job with the lyrics and they compliment the music to a tee.

Upon hearing this musical I loved it so much I went out and got the rights to direct it onstage this October in Cincinnati! I was always a fan of Jim Steinman's music, but I now also have a great respect for the lyrics of Ray Fox. Fox is a wordsmith much in the tradition of Stephen Sondheim, with intricate wordplay and quick patter. I would suspect that it was his early work with Fox on this project that led Steinman himself into developing into a world class, phrase twisting. lyricist himself. And of course you have Steinman's great ear for melody, but with a much different feel than his Rock music. A great lost treasure of American theater (come see it in October!)

The Confidence Man.......2004-04-02

One of the undiscovered classics of the century. I hope to produce the first Australian production in November 2005. This show has a long and winding history, but I'll leave all that to the liner notes. Ray Errol Fox is one of the greatest lyricists of all time. I have never seen another talent like him - expect for Rupert Holmes - and these are the men I hold among my chief inspiration. Jim Steinman, the composer, whom many of you will remember from Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell has actually re-used many of these tunes in his subsequent projects. If you want the original version of his closing song from Pandora's Box, listen to Track One. "Milady" and "Something of this Masquerade may Follow" were re-used for TANZ DER VAMPIRE. Thank God this was finally released. It's a beautiful, heroic and courageous, discovered-at-last masterpiece of American musical theater.

The Confidence Man.......2004-03-07

When a friend gave me "The Confidence Man" as a Christmas gift, he advised me that I would be in for a treat. I was somewhat skeptical since I had never heard of it, but since it was based on a Herman Melville novel, I was intrigued. And it had music by Jim Steinman. I liked the story, of course, and the music, but it was the lyrics (by Ray Eroll Fox) that captivated me. They are witty, literate and consistently surprising. I find something new to admire every time I listen. Anyone into American musical theater shouldn't be without this one!

The right singer for the right music.......2002-12-21

I love music like this that straddles the border between classical and pop or jazz. I had never heard of Valerie Errante before, but she has a perfect voice both for the more classical pieces at the beginning of the CD and the jazzier pieces at the end. She is one of those rare singers (Dawn Upshaw is another) who seems equally comfortable with both styles. If you don't already own a recording of "Blackberry Winter," it's one of those rare songs which can genuinely be said to be worth the price of the entire CD. Wilder reminds me in some ways of another composer who deserves a wider hearing--Ricky Ian Gordon. Hopefully this CD will help bring this composer the attention he deserves.

Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

A Great Collection of Songs That Made Her a Star:.......2000-06-18

It was her first several motion pictures that resulted in Deanna Durbin's becoming the highest paid female star of her time; and it is from those movies that this anthology has been taken. The selections are a good mixture of everything from operatic arias to popular tunes of the day. The original recordings are over sixty years old; but modern engineering techniques have enhanced them to "better than new" sound. If you, like so many others, are rediscovering this remarkable young artist, this album will provide a great deal of pleasure...for the music, and as an excellent example of nostalgic memorabilia.

It's a Fine Day~ Miss Jane is a really nice trance track with Miss Jane. I love the beat, the vocal treatment, the vocals and the lyrics. This is a great single that should be obligatory at parties and for people that like trance music in general.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T FALL FOR THIS IMPOSTER AND GET THE REAL SONG FROM THE REAL ARTIST!

Don't fall for this lousy excuse to make money off of a great song! Kirsty Hawkshaw originally sang this song with Opus III and this stupid band "Miss Jane" comes along and misleads scores of people, and it even fools people into thinking that "Miss Jane" is an actual girl that sings the song. Even people in here are praising the song not realizing that it's a huge rip-off.

GET KIRSTY HAWKSHAW'S 2002 COVER VERSION "FINE DAY", it's a good thing she reclaimed her single after all of this butchery. Her 2002 version of "Fine Day" is, IMO, the BEST TRANCE/HOUSE SONG EVER MADE. It's far more hypnotic and ethereal than this stupid Miss Jane version. The CD even rewards you with an astounding musical video.

This is 1 hard to find album. You might have to buy a used one. The sound quality is very good and Miss Jane's voice just go so well with the rest of the music. Personal favorite is still the remix by ATB. Make sure you turn up the volume......and put it on repeat. :)

They Walk by the Garden, They Look at the Sky.......2004-01-16

When I purchased the trance album that contained this song, I'm not sure what I expected to find or if I thought that anything would promote itself as "striking." I suppose what I was looking for was something with a beat that could be called uplifting, and I suppose I was trying to capitalize on the fact that these moods are quite often energetic. Normally I find a few songs in the fray that blend together into something I like and that suffices for a while, but I'm not accustomed to finding something that stands out. I simply buy albums of this nature to drive to when I have to go on long trips, or to walk to when I feel the need to walk. While dance music has been good to me, it's also been one of those mediums that hasn't given me that many songs that truly stand. And that's why I have to say that I was absolutely taken with Miss Jane's "It was a Fine day."

Working with a minimalist technotronic paintbrush, Miss Jane took a beat that works its way into the mind and that layers the song with a backdrop, and then that voice went about adding lyrics that were almost serene in nature. Therein they seeded an idea of a day being "a fine day", with "people open(ing) windows" and "leav(ing) their houses just for a short while". Going further, the lyrics indicate that the day was lovely enough that "they walk by the gardens" and "they look to the sky." Perhaps all of that could fit into a thimble of meaning for quite a few souls and perhaps that doesn't paint a picture for a lot of people, but everytime I hear that, all of those lyrics exposed, the song gives me goosbumps. When I'm having a day that seems disconcerting and I need something to lose myself within, I simply plug in that song and imagine the day that Miss Jane paints for me. I envision a day that's lovely enough that I want to open my windows and go outside for a little while, taking time to walk through the garden and looking at the sky. And that makes me feel better.

That, in a nutshell, is what I took from it and why I bought the single with LOTS of versions of it.

this song should get more then just 5 stars.I think miss jane has a wonderful voice in that song its a fine day.When I bought the CD I was shock at the cover but no one perfect in life.Well when I heard the song I can't belive the voice that she had and not just the voice but the beat made it better.Some of you all who love or like to go club pretty much heard the song.The music video I thought it was cool even if I realy didn't understand it.
I hope miss jane makes a other album coming soon.I hope this help you to know this song ITS A FINE DAY by the one and only MISS JANE!!!!!!!!!!!!
