Customer Reviews:
Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The Producers was the vehicle that first proclaimed Mel Brooks's decidedly singular comic vision as a film director in 1968. At the time, the world may not have been entirely ready for the depth charges of hilarity he unleashed; but more than three decades later, it seemed almost foreordained that the film's retooling as a full-fledged musical--directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman--would become the smash hit of the 2000-2001 Broadway season (even before opening at the St. James Theatre in April). Brooks is, of course, no stranger to the Broadway musical genre or to songwriting, but skeptics might find themselves taken by surprise at just how outrageously well all the threads come together for the new show.
The film's absurd core vignette--the infamous "Springtime for Hitler"--if anything gains a few notches in hilarity when framed by a character-rich musical that comes off as both parody and valentine in its mimicry of Broadway's "golden age." Brooks (with the help of idiomatically expert arrangements by Glen Kelly) has cooked up a variety of numbers constituting a virtual primer of old-fashioned American musical comedy styles (there's even a toying with Cabaret-style decadence), but they're always coated with an extra layer of zaniness. In fact, the whole show becomes a Chinese box of parodies within parodies. But what really gets the whole mix working is a surefire cast headed by Nathan Lane playing Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick doing a delightfully nebbish turn with delusions of misplaced glory as his sidekick, Leo Bloom.
From his first big number (musically winking at Fiddler on the Roof), Lane hungrily lays claim to the role, undaunted by his formidable predecessor, Zero Mostel. Even on disc, you can visualize his over-the-top mugging as a dethroned "king of Broadway" who was "the first producer ever to do summer stock in the winter." Comedy, as they say, is all about timing, and that's exactly what Lane gets right. His interactions with Bloom, Franz Liebkind (Brad Oscar), and Roger de Bris (Gary Beach) are priceless, even when only in sound. As for the tunes, Brooks crafts a number of truly memorable ones--don't be surprised to find yourself horrified as you hum along with "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop" and, of course, "Springtime for Hitler." --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
Just what I wanted.......2006-11-06
I saw the making of the CD on TV. The cast does a great job. I have the CD in my car stereo and listen to it often.
I Want to be a producer.......2006-03-06
This recording is great! I saw the play in november and loved the music. I bought the CD a little later and i am still listing to it. The cast are all great singers and did a great job. The songs are witty and catchy and never get old. You should listin to this.(Warning:See the movie or the play before you listin to this, you might hate it if you've have not.)
Spring Time for "The Producers".......2005-12-13
While I'll abmit that Nazi regemes and Hitler are probably some of the least funny thing in the world...i have to admit that the words to Springtime for Hitler are hilarious, just like the rest of the songs on this cast recording.
While "The Producers" Is not as musically complex or mature as other "Best Musical" scores of recent years (Spamalot, Avenue Q, Hairspray,) It is funnier than all of those put together. Nathan lane And Matthew Broderick Are perfectly cast in their roles and Caddy Hoffman is great, and when Ulla belt, she Belts!
the rest of the cast is amazing.
As for the song I can't think of one that I don't like, They are all great!
I would hope that the fact that the show makes light of Hitler doesn't turn you off, because you would be missing somthing great.
Mel Brooks = Brilliant.......2005-12-12
My theatre group went to New York two years ago, adn we did a marathon 4 shows in 3 days. Each show got progressively better, finally culminating in seeing Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick's final performance of "The Producers." I have been a fan of Brooks' since I saw "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" 5 years ago. Naturally, I was beyond excited to see the show he made of his most brilliant film.
I was not disappointed. It was funny, racy, and downright fabulous. I bought the soundtrack at intermission and have been listening to it ever since. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves musicals. Lane and Broderick play off each other perfectly, Cady Huffman has one of the best belting voices I've heard in ages, and the songs are actually FUNNY.
Aside from raving about one of my favorite shows, I would like to address the comments made about the show downplaying Hitler and being racist towards Germans. In no way does this show downplay Hitler's terrible deeds. Bialystock and Bloom make several comments about how disgusted they are about the play- the fact that it is so insulting to our sensibilities is the reason why it was chosen in the first place. I am Jewish and have studied the Holocaust and WWII for years. I was not offended in the least, nor did I feel the Brooks was promoting or trivializing Hitler's war crimes. Brooks himself is Jewish for god's sake.
Second, I see nothing in the show that is racist towards Germans. Yes there is a Nazi in it who is German. How is that racist? The Nazis went all over the world after WWII- it is possible that several ended up in New York City. And no one will argue that some Nazi's were German. You might as well say that the show is discriminatory towards Swedes, or gay directors, or producers, or the countless number of things made fun of in the show.
it won 11 (if im correct) TONY awards for a reason!.......2005-12-08
This is by far the funniest thing I have ever seen. I got the chance to see it on broadway with Lane (unfortunatly not Broderick) and most of the original cast. For some reason, certain people seem to think this play is racist. First off, the whole thing is pure 100% SATIRE. I'm 15 and I can realize that. Also, are you aware that Mel Brooks is jewish? Yeah, so lighten up. I realize what Hitler did, and it will never be forgotten. But my God, get a sense of humor. In case you never saw the play, the Bavarian guy breaks his leg (making "It's bad luck to say good luck on opening night funny) and is replaced by the gay director for the song "Springtime for Hitler". ITS HILARIOUS! BROOKS MADE HITLER A GAY GUY! And why do you think he did that? Geeze... just lighten up!
So about the CD...awesome. I love these songs, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie version of the musical coming out in late December! GO SEE IT!

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24
If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.
Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26
This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.
The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.
There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.
This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.
This is a fun disc to have.
A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03
This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.
Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05
Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

A couple of GOOD songs and then.... many not so good. Lots never heard of before.... Disappointing to say the least...
The Beginning Of Supremes Mania.......2006-06-14
To zoom in on The Supremes chart-topping success in 1964, Tamla Motown records (which they had been signed to since January 1961) released an accompanying album named after their first ever No.1 hit Where Did Our Love go. The Where Did Our Love Go album hosted a collection of their chart-toppers,a few minor hits from a time when they were referred to as "The No Hit Supremes" by fellow Motown colleagues (after having released nothing but a succession of flops and minor hits between 1961-63), B-Sides and a few would-be hits.
The swirling, latin-inspired, mellow arrangements on the divine A Breath Taking Guy had been penned by the genius song writing skills of Smokey Robinson (who Bob Dylan once described as "the greatest living poet"). The track featured a warm, sensual and passionate vocal performance from The Supremes stunning lead singer Diana Ross and contained magnificent vocal trade-offs on the shimmering chrous from The Supremes founder Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson. This should have been a break through for The Supremes (as should one of their earlier singles Your Heart Belongs To Me) but instead it stalled at No.75 on the Billboard Charts and yet even that was an improvement as their single prior to this, Let Me Go The Right Way, got as far as no.90!
However their next recording When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes packed a wallop like none of their other singles had to that point. It also marked the beginning of the legendary collaboration with Motowns hottest writers Holland-Dozier-Holland who along with Motowns unsung heroes, The Funk Brothers, helped define what was commonly known as "The Motown Sound - the sound of young America" but also helped develop an identity and focus for The Supremes where others most surprisingly such as smokey Robinson had failed. Containing an effective conga beat that generally had all the emphasis of that classic Tamla Motown sound, When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes carried a strong and an unusually assertive performance from the magical Diana Ross who was now the groups permanent lead singer. Though indeed a classic, the track enjoyed only marginal chart success, climbing its way to No.23 on the Billboard charts but then this single had certainly made far more noise than any of their previous singles.
Perharps cashing in on the success of The Crystals famous classic, Da Doo Ron Ron Ron, The Supremes next release was Run, Run, Run. Ross gallops along eagerly keeping up with the frentic, tight arrangements where as Ballard and Wilson enhance the production even further with their strong, effective backing vocals. Run, Run, Run has instant immediacy which is why its all the more surprising that Run, Run, Run crawled only to a dire No.93. the Supremes were confident after the top 30 success of When The Lovelight that they were on the right track to superstardom but the relative failure of Run, Run, Run dented their hopes.
Holland-Dozier-Holland then offered Where Did Our Love Go to the now distraught Supremes after it had already been rejected by The Marvelettes (who helped put Motown on the map by delivering the labels first No.1 hit with Please Mr. Postman) and Mary Wells (famous of course for one of Motowns most definitive classics, My Guy). Lead singer of The Marvelettes, Gladys Horton labelled the song "junk" and to top it off The Supremes also hated the song, especially Mary Wilson who never believed the song was going to be a hit. How wrong could they have all been!
Diana Ross oozed sensuality sounding sexy and angelic on Where Did Our Love Go whilst Ballard and Wilson provide the obligatory back up vocals throughout. Where Did Our Love Go caught on to the public like a magnet and it speedily found its way to pole position on the charts and was the first in a run of five consecutive no.1 hits. The Supremes had been travelling around the U.S on the Dick Clarke Caravan of stars appearing alongside such names as The Shirelles and Gene Pitney. The Supremes fell under the banner "and others" but after Where Did Our Love Go they were the HEADLINE attraction!
Baby Love was even bigger where it topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. This marked the beginning of Supremes Mania. Baby Love was simply just three minutes of what was pure, utter perfection! Ross' exuberant delivery is so touchingly sweet and the warm backing harmonies of Ballard and Wilson merely add to that dazzling effect.
Come See About Me swiftly followed Baby Love to the top of the charts. They were on a roll now! This was a more sassy offering (and my own personal favourite of their chart toppers of 1964) where Ross is joined in a capella at points by Ballard and Wilson that proved very effective. At this stage of the game, The Supremes sound was much more group oriented and didn't fully revolve around the distinct sound of Diana Ross.
The remainder of the terrific Where Did Our Love Go album was all indeed top notch stuff thanks to the unique and distinct vocals of Diana Ross to great, impeccable song writing from Holland-Dozier-Holland and complex, superbly crafted musical arrangements from Motowns legendary in house band known as The Funk Brothers.
Long Gone Lover sounded like another sure fire smash hit for The Supremes even though it remained just an album track. Those infectious musical arragements are enhanced by another sweet, tender lead by Diana Ross whilst the true volume and power of Florence Ballards far more earthy vocal style can be heard at the climax before the track fades out.
I'm Giving You Your Freedom had been recorded back in 1963 and featured Ross singing in a higher, yet sharper vocal tone thats fittingly raw and solid. The track also features a beautifully understated guirtar interlude at the bridge of the song.
The rather sugary Standing At The Crossroads Of Love features Ross singing again in a high key that becomes a little shrill at points but yet still proves adorable as it possessed such a unique and a very different quality.
The sharp, inventive musical arrangements on He Means The World To Me is a perfect example of the girl group sound of the early 1960's with another vulnreable, angelic sounding Ross chirping away against the intricate backing vocals of Ballard and Wilson.
The sweeping rhythm section on Your Kiss Of Fire has an exhilirating lead vocal performance from Ross but standing right next to I'm Giving You Your Freedom as a KNOCK OUT album track is Ask Any Girl. Ask Any Girl opens with a yearning vocal interlude from Ross which then pumps out into the classic Motown sound with lots of finger snapping and handclaps, repetitive beats and pulsating rhythms. Ross seamlessly surfboards along those glorious arrangements courtesy of The Funk Brothers. Ask Any Girl had been used as the B-Side to their cross-Atlantic no.1 hit Baby Love though easily could have become a hit in its own right.
Where Did Our Love Go is a landmark album by Diana Ross and the Supremes and also became one of Motowns biggest ever selling albums spending a total of 89 weeks on the chart. ESSENTIAL!
I Hear A Symphony (1965) is a different story. To broaden Diana Ross And The Supremes appeal to a multi-racial audience, Berry Gordy had the group record showbiz standards and cover tracks from the middle-of-the-road market. Berry Gordys mission was accomplished and soon Diana Ross And The Supremes were perceived as all-round entertainers. The I Hear A Symphony album is a pure example of what Berry Gordy accomplished with the group and whilst some say their startling and clearly inspired versions of showbiz classics like Stranger In Paradise, Without A Song and Wonderful, Wonderful, showcase their flair for diversity, I have to say purley from my own personal view that I found those kind of tracks quite ghastly. When I think of Diana Ross And The Supremes, I think Soul/R&B/Pop and its these elements of styles that captured their own unique, magical sound.
There is a rather bland reading of The Beatles, Yesterday whilst there is little ignition in their ponderous cover of The Righteous Brothers, Unchained Melody. Diana Ross certainly makes the songs her own as she sings them in her own unique vocal style and in no way are these criticisms aimed at Diana Ross but I feel the corny showbiz and MOR cover versions flaw this album in a big way and no doubt other die-hard Soul/R&B fans like myself, ran for cover on hearing these recordings!
However in its favour, and this alone justifies the reason for buying I Hear A Symphony, is the magnificent tracks that get that full injection of the riveting Motown sound. I Hear A Symphony is a pure masterpiece. A glossy, sophisticated soul number vastly containing elements of Jazz is coated by Diana's rich, golden voice.I Hear A Symphony became The Supremes sixth chart topper.
Another outstanding masterpiece is the utterly dynamic and stunning My World Is Empty Without You where Diana puts in an almost stark and far more earthy sounding vocal performance and is all the more effective in doing so. It was on tracks like these that you realised the full extent and range of Diana Ross's vocal abilities that literally pour out on such fully-formed productions like these. My World Is Empthy Without You quickly flew into the U.S Top 5 (despite seemingly having all the momentum and fire to go all the way into pole position).
More laid-back but still totally infectious is the lovely Any Girl In Love (Knows What I'm Going Through) whilst Everything Is Good About You basically has Motown written all over it! Though you could argue some tracks on Diana Ross And The Supremes full-length studio albums were somewhat formulaic, most individual recording still ecapsulated its own unique quality when judged on its own merits.
Finally I Hear A Symphony closes with the fabulous Northern-soul vibes of He's All I Got where there shimmering harmonies blend fantastically well together and He's All I Got in my opinion rates as one of their very best album recordings and most certainly has a strong commercial flair.
On the whole I Hear A Symphony is memroable purley on the tracks that are ignited by that riveting Motown effect but the showbiz covers sound dated that have not comfortably stood the test of time. Contrary to my own personal perception of the showbiz recordings, some fans will argue that these remain some of Diana Ross' most enthralling work and that I Hear A Symphony is one of their best studio albums, so its defintley worth a listen all-round.
Two Very Different Albums on one CD!.......2005-08-17
These two original albums were the Supremes' second and ninth ( as far as I've able been able to trace ) LP's. Both of them contain some of the Supremes' greatest singles hits. "Baby Love", "Come See About Me" and the title-track from "Where Did Our Love Go". From "I Hear a Symphony" the hits are "My World is Empty Without You" and the title-track - all five hits Holland/Dozier/Holland compositions. Apart from two Smokey Robinson songs all tracks on the early album were penned by Holland/Dozier/Holland; making it by far the most consistent of the two albums. Stand out tracks, besides the hits, are "I'm Giving You Your Freedom" and "Standing at the Crossroads of Love".
The 1966 album features a much more varied type of songs, making it a much more uneven affair - including several standards of that time like "Unchained Melody" and "Lover's Concerto" - exposing them for rather heavy orchestration; and though the latter is quite enjoyable the Motown sound is more or less lost. The Holland/Dozier/Holland material on the album suits the Supremes' voices best, and stand out as the strongest and makes the album worthwhile after all.
5, BUT ONLY FOR WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO.......2005-04-06
WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO is an excellent, excellent collection of music. The album reached #2 on the pop lp chart, and is reportedly the best selling POP album of 1964. That was a tremendous accomplishment for The Supremes and for Motown Records at the time.
The Holland-Dozier-Holland writing and producing unit had hit its stride, if not its peak, at the time this music was released. They are represented with several of the tunes here, including 3 pop #1's [Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, Come See About Me], as well as the girls' first top 40 hit [When The Lovelight Starts...], which is somewhat of a Phil Spector soundalike, and is quite a production and performance. It also includes the classic H-D-H production/composition, "Ask Any Girl," which is one of the prototypes of symphonic soul, and features that incredible, and incredibly hummable "La-La-La" background by Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. The very first H-D-H/Supremes collaboration, "I'm Giving You Your Freedom," which is a major gem, is also included.
I particularly like the 2 Smokey Robinson-produced selections, "Long Gone Lover" and "A Breathtaking Guy." The former, a real soul-rocker, starts out with Mary's great alto part, and ends with an arresting, gospel-tinged tag by Florence, the latter featuring fill-in lines on the chorus by Florence and Mary, which gives an additional glimpse at "the other 2 singers'" glorious talent, which was squelched more and more as time went on in order to promote Diana Ross' supremacy within the group.
In my opinion, it was an incredulously unfortunate move to suppress 2/3 of the group's talent, in spite of Diana's effective leads on so many classic hits.
Anyway, an early Norman Whitfield effort is included, as well, and it is pretty stunning ["He Means The Word To Me"]. One of the very great treats on this album is a Robert Gordy production, "Your Kiss of Fire," which features absolutely knockout backing vocals, especially Flo's soprano part. Amazing! H-D-H's "Run, Run, Run" was meant to capitalize on the success of "Lovelight," and failed, in spite of it being an above-average early effort. Also, their "Standing At The Crossroads of Love," is a gem.
That should account for all 12-tunes on this extraordinary set, which needs to be in any pop, r&b, Supremes, Motown, or early-mid 60's music enthusiast's collection.
As for I HEAR A SYMPHONY: the title tune is one of Motown, The Supremes, and H-D-H's best. "Everything Is Good About You," is very beautiful, and is almost a Diana solo. "He's All I Got" and "Any Girl In Love" are above-average H-D-H productions. All of the cover tunes, though well produced, are uninspired. Diana's voice seems somewhat clunky on some of these tunes, and there is a suppressed sound to the background singing, when present. Here is a classic example of an album that had those good Motown intentions of expanding the artists' appeal, but that would most certainly have benefitted from including the "other 2 singers'" immense talent and contributions, which might have better suited certain songs. In spite of these shortcomings, The Supremes still had enough draw at this point for this effort to reach #8 pop.
Note that the packaging of the above is quite interesting, featuring a slip case and novel jewel case. The booklet isn't anything special, just a few pictures and track annotations. Overall, a good buy, with WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO constituting absolutely ESSENTIAL Supremes.
Also note that, via Hip-O-Select, and released in early 2005 in limited edition, is available a beautiful, deluxe 2 cd edition of WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO. It features lovely packaging and full-color booklet with copious notes and photos. Disc One contains BOTH mono and stereo versions of the album, from start to finish, and in that order. Disc Two contains many previously unreleased tunes that were either recorded during the WDOLG sessions, or during the same time period, a handful of which were probably worth releasing back then, and none of which feature lead vocals other than Diana's. It is a rather expensive deal at nearly $40. As a huge Supremes fan and near-completist, I sprung for it. Worth considering.
double supremes.......2005-03-27
this collection features two of the supremes biggest selling lps of the 60s as both would go on to sell over 1 million copies each for the group.not only are these two best selling lps but they are two of their best.the first ,WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO is early supremes and has alot of great harmonies from the ladies while the second,I HEAR A SYMPHONY,is also equal, but yet it does not feature the harmonies of the first.on some tracks they are Ross solos or almost with Flo and Mary hardly being used at all.if you heard these songs in their live settings, such as the LIVE AT THE TALK TO THE TOWN ,you would hear the harmonies for the live set but for this lp we are cheated of that.one can only imagine how more special this set would have been.in point, the cd SUPREMES SING ROGERS AND HART,there is a few great cuts with the supremes and to hear Flos voice right up against DIANAS was pure magic.too bad motown didnt see to us use the harmoies here.still a great lp.also, just out ,SUPREMES THERES A PLACE FOR US.a rare lp the supremes recorded in 1965 has 24 great cuts.the lp is very simular to SYMPHONY lp and the reissue of the never before lp has a few outakes from the SYMPHONY lp.however you can only order this from motown at hipo select.released in limited quantities.also released now is the 40th annivarsary of WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO 2 cd set with another 24 unreleased supremes performance including the never released SUPREMES LIVE LIVE LIVE.this lp was also scheduled for release in 1964 but cancelled.both are worth the bang!

Product Description
Disc 1 features both the mono and stereo versions of the album first issued in August 1964. The mono edition is now on CD for the first time ever.
Disc 2 contains 19 rare and unreleased songs from the sessions that were recorded for the album plus, from the same recording timeline, tracks for the album The Supremes Sing Ballads And Blues, a project that ultimately went unfinished.
Yes. This expanded edition includes another bonus: The Supremes complete homecoming show, at Detroits Twenty Grand nightclub, recorded upon their return from the Dick Clark Caravan Of Stars just as Where Did Our Love Go was on its way to Number One. While brief, this is their complete performance from the show, and not only captures the moment of the Supremes ascent but also their only recorded live performance of A Breath Taking Guy, and the much sought-after live version of People, led by Florence Ballard.
The lovely packaging includes a booklet with many rare and unseen photographs, a detailed essay and a recording timeline. Featured in the essay are quotes from the people who made the record and influenced its success: Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Edward Holland, Dick Clark, Janie Bradford, and, yes, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard and Diana Ross.
Where Did Our Love Go took Motown to a whole new level of sales, visibility and respectability. The Supremes, as Motowns flagship, became the most successful female group in the world. This expanded edition tells the story of how it happened, and the determination of three teenage girls (formerly) known as the no-hit Supremes.
Looking back, Lamont Dozier tells us, Diana Ross was the best. She will go down in history as one of the best. Mary and Florence were there adding to the spice. This particular recipe called the Supremes came together because everybody had the right elements, the right seasonings, and the right flavors to make it happen.

What A Treat For Supremes Fans.......2007-06-06
I know this CD is a little pricey now,but well worth it!
If your a fan get it before it becomes A CD on E-Bay auction. Disc 2 is worth the price alone of early Supremes singing as a true group many gems and on top of that you get the 12 track album in mono (sounds wonderful)and in stereo. Dig into your pocket for this one don't miss out on this limited release, I'm very glad I did.
Great to hear original mono version of this landmark Motown LP .......2007-01-17
Great to finally hear this album in it's original monophonic spendor after 40 plus years. Almost like listening to the actual 33 1/3 vinyl release, which I still have a copy of! Not too cleaned-up and remastered to death, like most Motown compilations currently on CD. Hope more original MONO and 45RPM mixes will find their way onto CD.
MANDATORY FOR SUPREMES FANS.......2006-06-10
You're looking at the most successful non-greatest hits album in Motown's catalog from 1964 until Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" came along in mid-1971. Originally LP number 621, Motown lists its release date as August 31, 1964. That jibes with my memory as a 10-year-old at the time, and I recall seeing it in records stores just before school started up again ( 5th grade for me ) after that wonderful summer. The album's title track had been a massive hit over those vacation months, putting the Supremes name on the lips of every teen and pre-teen whose ears caught it. This was no easy feat given the chart competition at the time - the Beatles had only begun to storm America that January, and Where Did Our Love Go shared chart company with A Hard Day's Night by summer. But the appeal of the record was irresistible and all of us just about played the 45 till the grooves were flat.
According to the liner notes, the next hit, even larger, barely made it to the album in time for release. An earlier, slower version of "Baby Love" ( included on the second disc ) was re-recorded in a slightly upbeat version at Berry Gordy's instruction, made it into the album, and was released as 45 too on Sept. 17. This Supremes fan, to this day, remembers exactly where I was ( a clothing department store ) the first time I heard it over a radio. It spent four weeks at No. 1 on Billboard, and Come See About Me was right on its heels, giving the Supremes three No. 1's in a row, all on the same album. ( By mid 1965, the number would be five in a row ). Come the New Year, in any home with young people, the Supremes were now a household word. If soul music had its own "Meet The Beatles" that year, "Where Did Our Love Go" is surely it, and its historic value and still-undiminished pleasures cannot be overstated.
The brief `coming home' concert on the second, bonus disc is of particular interest too. Berry Gordy hadn't yet begun the habit of having the group's hits rearranged to sound like Vegas show tunes for their stage shows, something that always disappointed teen buyers of their live albums. Here however, "Where" and it's modestly successful antecedents, "Lovelight Shining Through His Eyes" and "A Breath Taking Guy" are given sincere and unhurried readings, sonically faithful to the studio versions.
Hip-O Select's painstaking and loving approach to historic Motown material is the best thing to happen to soul music since Rhino tackled Aretha's classic Atlantic recordings in the early `90s. My vinyl versions of this album, stereo and mono, are still in capable shape ( yes I have the 45s too ), but whether or not you still have your own, the re-issue of this Motown milestone ( especially the mono version ) on wear-proof and indestructible CD amounts to the group themselves summoning you to the `record store' again, as they surely did the first time you ever heard "Baby Love" on the radio too.
