On his second "solo" album, this stand-up comic and character actor proves himself to be not just a foul-mouthed everyman and an unrepentant geek, but a rather awesome wordsmith as well. That a comedian might rant about how "Cirque du Soleil is like catnip for old people" or the ridiculous unhealthiness of a popular item at the fast food chain KFC is not surprising. That he'd call the fast food item "a failure pile in a sadness bowl" is, let's face it, pure poetry (and really, actually funny the way he tells it). On the track "I Tell a Story About Birth Control and Deal with a Retarded Heckler," Patton displays some of the finest manipulation of a disturbing audience member you'll ever hear. That the album was released by Sub Pop makes perfect sense, as Patton not only has Catholic music tastes--tossing off references to Hasil Adkins, the Pixies, Minor Threat, and Roky Erickson--but as we all know, stand-up is "the new grunge." --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Patton has been a stand-up comedian for almost twenty years and this is his second CD. Lazy...or maybe busy. He's appeared in over twenty movies, including "Magnolia", "Reno 911!: Miami", and the documentary "The Comedians Of Comedy", which he also created and produced. He played Spence on "The King Of Queens" for nine seasons, is a regular on "Reno 911!", a frequent guest on Conan and Jimmy Kimmel, and a recurring voice actor on "Kim Possible", "SpongeBob SquarePants", "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", and "Crank Yankers". He's a regular columnist in the NY Times Magazine and was an uncredited writer on the "Borat" movie. He's also the lead voice in this summer's Pixar movie, "Ratatouille", playing a rat named Remy. This is his first CD on Sub Pop and it includes a DVD with one hour of stand-up.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More great stuff from Patton.......2007-08-01

To me, Patton Oswalt is the funniest comedian around right now. He can be really goofy one second and be intelligent and political the next, but he's always funny and never comes off as preachy. It seems like some comedians these days are just really cynical and can't laugh at themselves and it makes their stuff hard to listen to. Thankfully, Oswalt avoids that kind of stuff. I'm really not describing his act very well, but that probably doesn't matter too much because I'm guessing you're already familiar with his stuff if you're reading this.

If you liked Patton's earlier stuff then this CD will not let you down. I don't think it's quite as good as Feelin' Kinda Patton, but it's still pretty great. Most of the bits on here are pretty short, which is good because none of them go on longer than they should. Definitely a comedy CD you'll want to listen to a few times (which is pretty rare with comedy albums) and turn friends onto. The DVD is a nice bonus and contains a stand up act with different versions of the jokes on the CD.

My favorite tracks: America Has Spoken, Clean Filth, At Midnight I Will Kill George Lucas with a Shovel, and Death Bed.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Gonna Fill Your Hoo Haa with Goof Juice!.......2007-07-20

If you're a fan of Patton, this material is just as strong and cutting as "feelin' kinda patton." What's great about this release is that there is also a DVD that has a set from Atlanta's 40-watt along with some other footage of Patton just riffing on different topics.

His takes on different political and social issues is fresh and witty. He's brutally honest and insightful and he's evolved into one of the premier stand-up acts working today. There's always a sense of humanity in his act and that's what makes Patton's appeal so broad. He might be saying something that is mostly cynical but it's always tempered with his kind disposition and witty outlook on life. Beyond all of that, he's an incredible comedy writer and his material on this release is masterfully constructed and his delivery is just as sharp.

5 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried, I bought some for friends! Funny times ten to the X........2007-07-17

I am a Patton fan and I was expecting to be amused. However, I got more laugh-out-loud moments from this CD than I have from any recent comedy CD. There isn't a bad routine. For me, the gems are "Death Bed" and "Physics for Poets". However, I can say I honestly laughed with every track.

I like the inclusion of the DVD as it allows you to watch the genesis of the material. Patton is a distinct physical presence and that adds to the humor.

My husband rarely finds any stand-up comedy funny. However, as I was playing the CD I saw tears of laughter streaming down his face durng "Physics for Poets". It's that good.

5 out of 5 stars His best stuff yet........2007-07-14

Patton is just getting better and better. Absurd without being wacky. Smart without being pretentious. Political without being preachy.

This is his best album yet. Buy it.

Immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Funny.......2007-07-13

Patton Oswalt is extremely funny. Not just a little funny - EXTREMELY funny. His material is intelligent & unforgettable and this CD is worth every penny.

Even as they began to fancy themselves as codpiece-wearing Elizabethan minstrels in the gallery, Jethro Tull was a blues-based hard-rock group, and an explosive one, at that. On Stand Up, they enjoy the best of both worlds, with lighter fare such as "Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square" and a jazzy instrumental take on J. S. Bach's "Bouree" mixing nicely with the blistering rock of "A New Day Yesterday," "Nothing Is Easy," and "For a Thousand Mothers." On Stand Up, the group's second album, you can hear the band, and the grand scheme behind it, begin to solidify. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Tull lives on . . . .......2007-08-06

This really brought back some memories. I was 15 the first time I heard this. Terrific stuff.
However, record companies should remember why the "extra" tracks were not put on the original album. They weren't good enought to make it to production the first time. (For the LP impaired; Album = Large black vinyl disc. Aka "record")

5 out of 5 stars "Nothing Is Easy" but it isn't hard to love this recording!.......2007-06-23

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Change may be normal in the music business but when a critical part of a machine is removed so early in the game could the replacement be equal or greater? Jethro Tull's debut and intense album "This Was" highlighted the blues guitar offerings from Mick Abrahams. As the band would consider more and more adapting a style closer to English Folk, Abrahams and group parted ways. Enter one Martin Barre.

The same way the Rolling Stones struck gold with Mick Taylor taking over for Brian Jones, Jethro Tull did likewise. In no way is this slighting Abrahams ability. Barre's forte was the ability to diversify and succeed in any musical genre.

Tull opened the second album with the bluesy-based "A New Day Yesterday." Instantly the listener is fixated to the songs construction. Throughout the compositions Anderson's vocals and Barre's tasty playing (as well as the perfect tone for each tune) mesh as one. To solidify the musical side of things Glen Cornick's bass and Clive Bunker's drums are locked together. As you have digested the recording, in the past Barre's skill may have been more prevalent to the ear because his guitar is such an integral part of the sound (He has played with Ian Anderson since 1969) but don't overlook the fine performance Bunker gave.

"Bourée" has become one of the most highly praised instrumentals ever. Almost 40 years later it still is receiving airplay.

"Back To The Family" blends folk and rock. The vocal inflection is perfect. You feel as Ian Anderson is singing for one and not the masses.

"Nothing Is Easy" is another song still being played on the radio. The riff deserves its legendary stature. Barre plays the song with such ease intensity yet ease, it wouldn't feel right coming out of another guitarists hands.

"Fat Man" further explores their folk side with some esoteric sounds to boot.

Time has not diminished the album, only catapulted it standing. With the addition of four bones tracks, it is now easy to go living in the past.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton
Author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent"

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs.......2007-06-09

I listened to this for the first time in many years upon recent purchase, and my feeling is the same as it was 20 years ago in my youth when I memorized the album note-for-note. It's a great collection of songs. Ian and the band move from heavy rock to exotic chamber music to ballad and back and forth, and all 10 songs are not just fine, but extremely well-crafted and memorable. Which makes this a pretty great album.

5 out of 5 stars Their best............2007-05-18

OK, to get the real deal package-wise I think you have to seek out the Japanese digipack with the pop-up of the band in the middle. But if you aren't into childrens-art-book styling like me, and just want the music, get this in any form. "This Was", their first effort, broke us into what they were all about, so then we were really ready for this when it came out. The bonus tracks fit fine thematically and don't mess up what was a nice cohesive LP in the first place. Never have been able to get "Fat Man" out of my head, maybe because it hits close to home.

5 out of 5 stars Forget what you think you know about Jethro Tull.......2007-05-12

The only bad news about this album is that Tull never again came close to this phenomenal album. Technically, this is J.T.'s second album but the first album had a drastically different lineup. "Stand Up" is a beautiful collection of fantastic songs and amazing guitar work. The band managed to produce 2 more great albums before they began to descend into parody. Surprisingly, for the late 60s, most of the band were tea-totallers and it shows. The musicianship is very tight, blending jazz, folk, middle eastern and folk influences into a heady brew that appears effortless. If you think this band is a bunch of boring old hippies, buy this CD and listen more closely. You may be missing some amazing music.

5 out of 5 stars Lewis Black is brilliant .......2007-01-19

Here Mr. Black takes on the government after 9/11 plus other topics with intellegence and wonderful spot on observations. He is also very funny. This is my favorite album of his so far.

3 out of 5 stars he's no bill cosby, but.........2006-11-08

I liked this cd a lot. The End Of The Universe skit is hilarious. My only gripe, and don't call me a pu**y for saying this, is that he swears too much. I have no problem with swearing, it's just he uses it so much sometimes, it gets annoying. Instead of being part of his act, the whole angry thing becomes his act. At times, it's just annoying. He could easily get across the same jokes without yelling and saying fu*k every two words. Some of this jokes are hilarious while some really aren't that funny. They're observations that we all make, he just yells them.

5 out of 5 stars His best album.......2006-09-06

While all of Lewis Black's comedy albums are very good, his second release, The End of the Universe, remains his best release to date. Released months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01, Black's delivery is passionate and intelligent throughout the album. Whether he's ranting on the over the top spectacle that has become the Super Bowl, the U.S. government's lack of common sense, or the ridiculousness of airport security, Black's observations are both humorous and accurate. Also worth noting is that unlike his more recent albums like the Carnegie Hall Performance, the album never becomes long winded or too political. Other tracks that deal with Jerry Falwell's controversial statements about 9/11 and global warming are also very funny and dead on. An excellent album from one of the best comedians working today, The End of the Universe shows Lewis Black at the height of his powers. Highly recommended.

Recorded just shortly before Thanksgiving 1999, we catch Lewis on one of his incredible tirades against all things inane and moronic, be it the weather person, or Bill Clinton's definition of "is."

Don't let the headless CGI dancer on the cover fool you. While Stand Up has a more organic feel than 2001's radio-ready Everyday, it is hardly an invocation for carefree days spent twirling on the grass. Instead it is a call to arms that carries over much of the insurrectionary spirit the Dave Matthews Band brought to 2004's Vote for Change Tour. Matthews, sounding rawer than ever, swerves between optimism ("To change the world you only start with one step," he sings on "You Might Die Trying") and angst ("See the man with the bomb in his hand/Everybody wake up," on "Everybody Wake Up [Our Finest Hour Arrives]"), while producer Mark Baston, best known for his small-time work with big-name pop acts like Beyonce and 50 Cent, responds by putting the marching band rhythms of Carter Beauford in the front and galvanizing the music with a crisp R&B edge, most evident in the totally--okay, partially--crunk "Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd." --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

The DVD side of the DualDisc will feature a 20+ minute film featuring the making of STAND UP with in-depth interviews with DMB at their recording studio in Charlottesville, VA.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Commits the worst crime of all: forgettability.......2007-05-15

I seem to have lost my copy of this record, and I'm not really mourning it--not nearly as much as "Busted Stuff." Yeah, DMB tried to write songs with the same types of melody and freeform as their early work, but this feels forced. And I remember exactly one musical phrase from the whole album, whereas I could sing you the entirety of "Under the Table and Dreaming" if you asked me to. Don't bother with this one, it's a dud.

1 out of 5 stars Boring and unmemorable.......2007-03-25

I'm not a hard-core DMB fan, but I buy and enjoy most of his stuff. This album, however, is simply boring and unmemorable. There's nothing that comes close to showing the true musical talents that I know DMB has. I got through the first 8 songs and couldn't remember anything about what I had just listened to. I'll shelve it for a couple months and then listen to it again and may change my mind later, but I'm not very optomistic that it will make a difference.

4 out of 5 stars Decomposing sound touched with fire, and out comes silver.......2007-03-24

Three stars is too few for a band that has successfully mined the soul out of their music for the first time since "What You Are" on the stilted Everyday.

If Everyday was DMB re-inventing themselves, Stand Up presents them as a band that cannot go home and refuses to. Stand Up should convince even the most casual fan (e.g. myself, I just heard it for the first time last week!) that there was enough passion stirring in the heart of this band to push them deep inside themselves - the end result is some of the bravest and boldest songs composed yet by this band. The songs also come across as more relaxed, even as they dig in and step up the beat.

Buy this album, if for no other reason than to remind yourself that DMB earned their spot and deserve to keep it. The naysayers that wag their tongues about the frivolousness of the lyrics forget that the sheer hedonistic joy of the music was what made DMB famous in the first place. People come to a DMB show to be loved because they know they are. This is DMB's "Darkness on the Edge of Town," and should be drawing their listeners back for a long time.

4 out of 5 stars Stand Up Does Deliver.......2007-03-21

Not far from participating in the Vote for Change Tour during the 2004 presidential champain, 2005's Stand Up is filled with a lot of political statements when you listen to the lyrical content in two of the album's best songs with "Everybody Wake Up," and "You Might Die Trying," and they still show the deep thought the band has always had. "American Baby," is another exceptional piece and filters feelings on political and emotional levels. Musically, the production is tight, and while the songs don't carry the instrumental pauses or extended jams as often, they also don't lack the energy. Tinsley's violin may sound a little more discreet, but not lacking as he takes control in the final moments of "You Might Die Trying," and plays a fabulous finishing take on "Louisiana Bayou,"(and Tinsley plus the band jam long and hard when they perform these tracks live). The band experiment with some musical edges with soft R&B on "Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd," and the Southern Country feel on "Louisiana Bayou," but there are a few flaws here and there. "Smooth Rider," would be the dud on this release and not one I would consider as the band's shining moment. "Hello Again" doesn't work well either. But overall, the Dave Matthews Band haven't lost their musical cool and conclude with two more great tracks in "Steady As We Go," and "Hunger For the Great Light," containing the spiritual honesty and raw emotion the band is so well-known for.

2 out of 5 stars "Dave's not here".......2006-11-09

Back in the '90s,the Dave Matthews Band was considered the next Grateful Dead, with Dave Matthews as its clean-shaven Jerry Garcia. In my college days, the DMB was praised for blending world music, jazz&rock. It was The Next Big Thing. There were Daveheads. But then came "Everyday" produced by Glen Ballard (who also produced Alanis Morrissette's music),which was seen as a sell-out.

"Stand up" was the last gasp. When this album was released,a local Bay Area radio station was mocking the DMB as "annoying"&saying that having the ubiquitous Black Eyed Peas (who are now collaborating with Sergio Mendes&Michael Jackson)open for them made the DMB "doubly annoying."

This album has a few highlights-
1)American Baby,intro&song-Despite the use of the African kora (harp),this song sounds Asian with its pentatonic scale. It's quite electrifying. It's danceable&shows the brilliance the DMB once had. It's powerful in the use of acoustic instrumental music, like REM's "Losing my religion."
2)Louisiana Bayou-Very jazzy, you could say it evokes the New Orleans sound.Again, the DMB plays to its strengths.
3)Finest Hour-This song is catchy despite Dave Matthews' politics.Great as a song, not great as a protest song.
4)Out of my hands-Reflective with the use of piano, like REM's "Nightswimming."

Can the DMB make a comeback? It's hard to tell.In a decade, they've managed to go from being the Next Big Thing to Has Beens."Stand up" made the mistake of being produced by an R&B/hip-hop producer who tried to make the DMB sound like any other group.DMB isn't 50 Cent;it isn't Justin Timberlake.Whether the DMB returns to form remains to be seen.

most of the time i can't tell whether her anecdotes are supposed to be funny because they're true or funny because they're too ridiculous to be true so i guess they're not a very good example of whichever they are.

4 out of 5 stars VERY MARIA..........2007-03-12

Funny smart comedy, with the multiple voices that are her trademark. Some of the bits are better than others, but overall, really good set. I've listened to it over and over, and it's still funny.

5 out of 5 stars If I could give it 6 stars, I would!.......2007-07-26

I laughed from start to finish. It made me think. Get misty. Sandra is at her very best. She has grown up, smoothed out, and knows her audience better than any performance artist/comedian around. Her pulse on politics and the icons of pop culture make her ripe for a talk show--tomorrow! I play it for just about every friend that stops by, and listen to it on my ipod when days get dreary. Brava!!!

Sandra Bernhard is unstoppable! There are very few Live albums that can do justice to the perfomance, but "Everything Bad & Beautiful" is one of the best I've heard! Every track packs a punch. Take Sandra's cover of Missy Elliott's "Pussycat" for example, it rocks, enough for you to want to blast it. Along with lots of other great song selections and Sandra's famous take on society, it is Sandra after all! Not to be missed, and it's going out of print, prices will rise!

I just want to say I bought this album from Sandra's website, it's her newest release from a new record company. Sandra's still got it, she is absolutely hilarious. Sandra makes fun of everybody from The Bushs, to Julia Roberts on Broadway. Telling storys of how Bob Dylan broke up her family as a child, all while singing songs in between with her high energy voice, not to mention she still makes fun of Mariah Carey, hilarious. It's a great live album that will have you playing it over and over, and your stomach will be hurting so much from laughing. also the all girl band on this album are amazing. A must have for Sandra Bernhard fans!.

Album Description

Maria Bamford speaks in many voices. No, She is not an impressionist, unless you count the stellar impression of her mom. Maria feels her high-pitched voice does not command respect, as a result, she has taken on many voices to help her in her wickedly funny jokes. Decidedly off-beat, Maria has a wide-eyed innocence that comes shining through on this, her debut on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious. Finally, a female comedian who is NOT a hack!.......2007-07-31

I host a weekly comedy/novelty radio show, and I've gotten nothing but praise for playing tracks from this CD. It's easily one of the best stand-up CDs I've heard in recent years, male or female. And trust me, I'm picky when it comes to stand-up.

I have very low tolerance for "hack" comedy, and by that I mean the comedy topics that we've all heard a million other comedians do: riding on airplanes, sounds from the McDonald's drive-thru speaker, Clinton/Lewinsky jokes, dogs vs. cats, etc. More specifically, there are the routines that we've heard virtually every stale female stand-up do before: guys-are-dumb, periods-are-funny, male bashing, stupid pet stories, male bashing, and did I mention male bashing? Bamford however steers clear of all that mess.

OK, granted she does have routines like the crazy mother stories and commentary on the dating scene. But even then, she has her own surreal twist to the topics that's truly witty. She's one of the few I know of that never tries to split the audience into men vs. women to get cheap, self-righteous applause. Bamford simply delivers great comedy. And not to sound like a prude, but she doesn't need "dick jokes" (the comedy term for shock/sex jokes) to hold the audience either. And as others have mentioned, she works an incredibly diverse amount of voices into her act, which really push the delivery. The "Christian Teen" voice still cracks me up to no end.

If you're looking for some new comedy that's original and witty, definitely give this one a listen, especially if you like a lot of the other acts on the "Stand-Up! Records" label.

5 out of 5 stars You'll LOVE Maria!!.......2007-05-26

I don't remember how or when I first heard of Maria Bamford, but upon that first listen I was instantly hooked! Hers is one of the few comedy CDs that I will listen to over and over again and still laugh in all the same places.

Her comedy style is an erratic but exhilarating ride through a crazy array of subjects and funny voices --- you'll never guess what she's going to talk about or SOUND like next!

Maria's tales of temp work, beauty pageant contestants (one of my favorite voices), women's magazine advice and outrageous impressions of her dear, sweet mom will have you laughing 'til your guts hurt!

Definately unique and not your average woman comic, I am also amazed that Maria is not yet so well known!

(So buy her CD now, so we can quote her first!)

5 out of 5 stars Best female standup out there..........2006-12-21

This is honestly some the best standup comedy I've ever heard. Maria is unique and quirky in her humor, and this cd really does her justice. I've yet to find one person who hasn't laughed out loud several times during this cd. While her many (very impressive) voices are her main attraction, she doesn't overdo them...she backs everything up with solid comedy that is actually FUNNY. She's also very quotable.

Too many female comediennes now seem like they're just struggling to make it in a man's world, so their routines are usually either too wraunchy, desperate, or man-hating. Not even a hint of that with Maria. She's brilliantly hilarious and her comedy is a brand of its own. An undeniable true talent.
Entertaining, energetic, and witty- you'll become a Maria Bamford fan within 10 minutes of listening to this cd.

Personal favorite tracks: Small Talk, Crazy Cult, Vennette

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny Chick .......2006-03-05

I checked this girl out because I was noticing her on different TV shows and whatnot, and I checked out her CD. It is so incredibly hilarious. Her voices are very funny, and her talk about "sexual harrassment" is funny as well. If you're going to buy the CD, buy it for her explaining what to do with Saddam. Make him a Roller Rink DJ. Funny stuff. I haven't seen her live, as with any comedian, but I'm sure she brings the same things to the table as on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Impressive Debut Album.......2006-02-02

There's a bit of a lack right now of really unique, standout female comics, and I'm keeping a close eye on Bamford. Her act works because she A) is down-to-Earth and sincere, not an invented "character"; and B) her voices take her beyond the formulaic joke-telling practiced by most comics. And an important part of why her voices are so effective is that she never uses them in an announced, "hey guys, I'd like to do some impressions now" kind of way. Her characters come up naturally, and are used to discuss interesting subjects and social points. Characters presented conversationally as a tool for satire is infinitely more interesting than the almost Vaudevillian "Here are my impressions guys" format.

Maria Bamford's work on "Burning Bridges" is diverse in subject matter, yet consistently funny. It's an excellent introduction to Bamford's vulnerable and insightful presence. Along with her partners who tour together as the "Comedians of Comedy", she is underated, inspired, and hopefully a star in the making.

Album Description

Doug Stanhope delivers a brand new CD which covers every hilarious topic from birth defects to suicide, performed live with Henry Phillips providing acoustic guitar accompaniment to help "take the edge off." While the music offers a smoother pacing than the frenetic "Sicko," the material doesn't lose any of the bite for which Stanhope is reknowned.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excess in moderation.......2006-11-09

I recently came to the conclusion that this is without a doubt the best Stanhope money can buy. He really won the crowd over on this one and you can tell he's having a good time. Some of the most hilarious bits he's ever performed are on here too, like "Big Rubber Fist", "Live Life", "Destroying Your Body" and also what absolutely has to be one of the best closers i've ever heard on any comedy album which is "Bobbie Barnett". I also like the use of the acoustic guitar all throughout the performance. Overall, this is a more "intimate" show compared to his others, which I think really holds up for repeated listenings more than more than most of his other albums.

5 out of 5 stars Still Quite Edgy.......2006-05-01

Anyone who is easily offended will NOT like comedian Doug Stanhope. In fact, chances are that something he says on any of his CD recordings will enrage just about every listener. Shock comics don't come much more extreme--or brutally honest. On "Something to Take the Edge Off" Stanhope experiments with having accoustic guitar music played in the background during his performance. It's an interesting gimmick (also tried by the late Bill Hicks), but it hardly smooths the comedian's edges.

This CD marks the turning point in Stanhope's career when he transitioned from telling mostly (sexual) stories about his life to overtly political (libertarian) rants. His broadsides against vice cops, social conservatives and religion are worth the price of admission alone, but there are also plenty of hilarious sex bits like "Big Rubber Fist." Overall "Edge" ranks with "Die Laughing" as one of Stanhope's two best recorded CDs.

5 out of 5 stars "Life is like animal porn. It's not for everybody.".......2004-09-06

I open with this quote (which, to me, sums up Stanhope's art) because I did not want to open with a banality which happens to me all the time.

This is possibly the most accomplished of Stanhope's CDs so far, and not only because of the beautiful guitar background track (it was tried by many comedians, and most of them failed to enhance the effect - even Bill Hicks in his Arizona Bay, although personally I quite liked the background there).

The CD flows back to back and an hour of act feels like maybe 15 minutes. It does not get boring for one second, and Stanhope proudly displays his biggest strength: wild, ornate, all-stops-pulled verbal imagery. He starts building an image before your eyes, and then adds an extra gross and revolting feature, and then another one, and then another. He piles them high and after each layer you think - now I've heard everything. But wait - there is more! And more. And more. Until the image before unwraps before your eyes, like a bizarre medieval painting, where Flemish artists surpassed themselves in inventing incredibly convoluted, complex - sometimes disgusting - picture of inferno and the Last Judgment.

Stanhope is an accomplished professional and God only knows how long he has to work on his act to get this perfection of delivery, where the pinnacle of the punchline is delivered - always - with just the correct volume of breath, enhancing the feeling of the culminating crescendo.

And the closing tracks about Excess in Moderation and about Bobbie Barnett - listen to them again. They can sum up an entire life philosophy - only for those, of course, who happen to agree with it. But hey: this is like animal porn. It's not for everybody.

5 out of 5 stars Stanhope burns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE BURNETH!!!.......2004-06-07

It's a bit less good than Die Laughing, I think- but I'm giving out 5 stars anyway because ish this raw is a rare treat to be savored... yummie yum yums...

This guy is a comic genius, along with his Man Show (yeah, the show is ok- don't blame them, considering the constraints under which they have to operate- it's still damn diggetty) co-host Joe Rogan, those two may be the sickest most profane individuals working in stand up. And thank God for 'em. (As Stanhope says on this release, "This is stand-up comedy folks...it's a dead sport...")

Both revel in the awkward, tortured basenessof humanity and turn our collective cultural ills into comedic gold. If you are tired of the same old tame, Comedy Central stand-up (admittedly, they have to go with the PG-13, cuz they're cable) observationists with their piddling coyisms: Get this. It will burn the scales from your eyes, and lead you out of Plato's cave, laughing like a tard the whole time.

Less revolving around the stories of 'Sicko,' though Doug can still milk a yarn for every ounce of meaty sanguine flava, Doug's jokes and observations really come into their own on this one. I prefer his 'Die Laughing' the most, and a couple of bits from this (Suicide most obviously) are streamlined on Die Laughing. That's another plus: many comedians recycle bits like a mutha hubbard. Stanhope doesn't do that much at all, so each CD packs new whallop!

Also there is this guy, Henry Phillips, who accompanies Doug with acoustic guitar playing throughout the whole CD.... Worried? Well, It doesn't get in the way of the funnies. I thought that would really grate on me at first but at times it works well- during the freakshow bit he plays that little circus jingle... They play off each other nicely. Don't let the guitar disuade you.

At any rate- Buy Stanhope's CDs, buy Rogan's (one, C'mon duide the people are jonesing for a new one!!!!) CD, get old Pryor, get old Carlin, get some Bill Hicks, and check out Kinison's stuff starting with the oldest (GET LIVE FROM HELL ON VINYL OR CASSETTE!!!!) and moving forward up until Leader of the banned which you just want to avoid... They will give you mounds of great stuff to steal when you're sitting at a bar, trying to be the funny guy because you're lame and unoriginal and have no soul of your own with which to lure under-age gals- you be the veriest Aristotelian conception of slave- to wage, wife and whatever else... Ohh! I don't think amazon has it -but if you go to eatabullet dottie commie, you can get Jim Norton's CD 'Yellow Discipline.' Also great, also dark, also evil. Also HILARIOUS.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Comedy Albums Ever.......2004-04-23

ALSTTTEO is up there with Hicks' "Relentless," Kinison's "Live From Hell," Bruce's "Lenny Bruce is Out Again," and Pryor's "Supernigger." I mean, this thing is a classic.

Whereas "Sicko" mainly just chronicled Stanhope's smutty lifestyle, ALSTTTEO takes that lifestyle and applies the lessons one can learn from it to the Big Picture. And trust me, no one else but Doug could take such deviant practices and not only make them feel universal, but also mold them into incisive analogies that leave the listerner feeling an ironic sense of enlightenment.

5 out of 5 stars TRUE SHOCK COMEDY.......2006-05-05

this guy is one of the funniest muthafackers ive ever heard. and hes so brutally honest. he has the weirdest point of view of things. many people cant handle this. like he always says "i feel like im leading you guys into battle, you wont all be here in the end" if you dont mind vulgar crazy comedy. then check this guy out. youll love him, i know i did, he can always make me laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Bracing, Vulgar and Unflinchingly Honest.......2006-05-01

Comedian Doug Stanhope is truly an antidote for the inoffensive blandness of many mainstream standup comedians. Hard to believe this is the same guy who hosted "The Man Show" and "Girls Gone Wild." There's no vacuous, fratboy humor here. In fact, one of the edgiest (and funniest) bits is a pro-school shootings rant in which Stanhope confesses his secret high school desire to "kill all the jocks." It is true that Stanhope's raunchy sex jokes are a big part of his appeal, but his consistent stance on behalf of the little guy (and girl) completely separates him from the dimwitted Andrew Dice Clays of the world.

All that said, "Die Laughing" is probably the best of Stanhope's CD recordings (along with "Something to Take the Edge Off"). If you're looking for a place to get acquainted with his extreme verve, this would be the place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Cerebral, Vulgar, and Funny.......2006-03-15

Doug Stanhope puts out a consistently off beat style of comedy. The set featured on this album lives up to the standards of his previous efforts. Doug Stanhope is a different kind of funny, kind of like watching someone beat the hell out of a Mime. His Humor is not as deep as a guy like Dennis Miller, but requires more thought than a guy like Chris Rock. I think anyone who enjoys Lewis Black, Joe Rogan, or any of Doug's previous albums will get a laugh out of this CD. If you're easily offened this CD probably isn't for you, if you have a good sense of humor and can laugh at something because it is a joke, this album is a decent buy.

4 out of 5 stars a new dimension in the comedy of Stanhope.......2003-02-16

Die laughing is the almost complete transformation of Stanhope from a autobiographical comic ("Sicko" is basically just all stories from his life) to one as a social critquer of our society. I personally believe Stanhope is at his best when he's doing an almost even mix of the two, as "A little something to take the edge off" was. This cd leaves the listener feeling angry at the end, which is how Doug probably intended for it to turn out, almost like talk radio does. That is not to say this cd is not funny, Stanhope on his worst day could blow the socks off of any other living comic (maybe even Hicks?) and this cd delivers many of those laugh at loud outrageous off the cuff comments you've come to expect of Stanhope. Just the theme is a little too dark. If you have Stanhope's other cds and are very familiar with him then buy this one immediately. If you are a beginner I would recommend "Something to take the edge off" first, then "Sicko" and then this cd. It's not for people who are just beginning to study the brilliance and art of Stanhope's work. (Believe me, it is truly brilliant and it is art)

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, brutal comedy by a modern stand-up master........2002-11-14

For those of you haven't heard of him, Doug Stanhope is one of the most talented and outrageous comedians working stand-up today. A gifted storyteller and writer, Stanhope mines his prodigious libido and colorful life as sources for his comedy. Less autobiographical than his earlier "Sicko" (I haven't listened to his other albums), the appropriately titled "Die Laughing" finds Stanhope injecting a dose of brutal nihilism into his raunchy material. I laughed, and I laughed hard, but I certainly wasn't in a happy mood after hearing the material on this album. Stanhope is often compared to the late, great Bill Hicks, and that is in some ways an apt comparison. Both men were enemies of the forces of hypocrisy and reaction, clever satirists of the human condition, and razor-sharp storytellers and comedians. Hicks' comedy, however, though often dark and aggressive, was leavened by his belief in human evolutionary potential. By contrast, Stanhope's material is far darker, for he evinces no faith in anything beyond sex, death, and human stupidity. Hearing this album, I could almost picture Stanhope killing himself on stage as a final punch line. This isn't meant as a criticism of Stanhope's material, since its not for me to sentimentalize the purity of his vision or his role as an artist. . . Anyway, don't let the way-too pretentious blather in this review stop you from buying this album. Stanhope is a comic treasure.
