"Everybody wanna be the king of the South" rhymes the P$C crew (featuring T.I. and Lil Scrappy), kicking off the Hustle & Flow soundtrack with the amped-up "I'm A King" remix. This film, about a Memphis hustler trying to become a respected rapper, won the Audience Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, and appropriately, the soundtrack has the hottest dirty South (a.k.a. crunk) songs around. Lead actor Terrence Howard is a double-threat, not just playing up-and-coming rapper DJay, but also performing on a number of tracks in character. From the blacksploitation-affected "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" to the equally ('70s-esque title track, his contributions are respectable, but not nearly as pumped-up and crunked-out as the disc's standout tracks. Although the CD is rap-heavy, there are some great moments on the R&B front as well, including Eightball & M.J.G.'s lost-love track "Tell Me Why," and the disc highlight, "Still Tippin'", a Mike Jones/Nicole Wray remix that brings sweet Tweet-like grooves to the collection. Some of the CD's other contributors include Juvenile (who is typically clever in "Booty Language") and Webbie, who battles with Trina on "Bad B**ch Remix". Moms and dads should be forewarned, however, that there is nothing subtle about the lyrics on this disc: true to crunk, every imaginable expletive is crammed into these 20 songs and sound bytes, along with a hefty dose of gang-style posturing. Hustlers With Flow.......2007-04-03

The original soundtrack for the Memphis' film Hustle & Flow begins with "I'm A King (Remix)" by PSC featuring T.I. & Lil Scrappy fit perfectly for the movie's subject. For the ride Lil' Boosie & Webbie represented well on "Swerve". The Oscar winning song "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" produced by Memphis own DJ Paul & Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia and performed by actor Terrence Howard (DJay) featuring Shug carried the album and movie with a heartfelt performance of the street life. Another famous act from Memphis, 8Ball & MJG stuck to their formula with "Tell Me Why". If no one understood the style 'crunk', "Whoop That Trick" by Djay epitomize the term. With the looping chant throughout the song, "...you do wanna do that..." on "Man Up" by Trillville gets the adrenaline flowing for another rush, but was held down with lack luster lyrical content. "Carbon 15's, A.K.'s & Mac 11's" performed by Boyz N Da Hood is a three verse shot that was followed by "Lil' Daddy" from Young City (Chopper) with contents such as "...I done walked for that cheesecake, now I got cheesecake oh yeah..." for a complete song. Djay stepped up for the third time for the title track, "Hustle and Flow (It Ain't Over)" with a pimp instrumentation and vocals to "...keep hustlin'..." "Still Tippin' (It's A Man's World Remix)" could not have been any better because no matter who remade the original it would still be good. This version was performed by Mike Jones featuring Nicole Wray, but it should have been the other way around. PSC's "Murder Game" without their leader T.I. was still worthy of recognition. There are others on here that decent enough to listen to, but are simply mediocre. Okay, honestly how did an actor out perform some of the artist on this soundtrack? Maybe it would have been more complete if Djay (Terrence Howard) had performed the entire soundtrack himself. For the most part Hustle & Flow flows well for the hustlers!

Hustle & Flow is a great album.......2007-03-23

I love this album. Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson did their thing. And it has a lot of other good songs. My favs are: I'm a king remix(P$C), It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp(Terrence Howard), Tell Me Why(MJG), P***y N***az(E-40),Whoop That Trick(Terrence Howard),Bad B**ch Remix (Webbie&Trina), and Still Tippin' (It's A Man's World Remix)-(Mike Jones & Nicole Wray). It was worth the money. Watching the movie makes you want the album to go along with it.

Best rap album I've bought in a while.......2007-01-24

This CD is worth it just to hear Terrence Howard on "Whoop that Trick" (credited as Djay). The surprise is that there are at 4 or 5 other great tracks, and the rest are decent.

Hip hop for those who don't like rap.......2006-11-11

If I hadn't seen the movie, I might not like the music so much. But even so I think I would have liked it more than I do most hip hop. The lyrics are timely and sensitive, and the music had merit too. I'd advise anyone to see the movie, and give the music a fair hearing.

Along with spiritual brother and surf buddy Jack Johnson, Garret "G. Love" Dutton has quietly but reliably lead a campaign for laidback but funky blues and R&B- inspired folk music. Now recording for Johnson's Brushfire label, the Philadelphia native stays tactfully on course for The Hustle, moving through the expected ballads ("Loving Me"), reggae-lite jams ("Give It to You"), and saucy BBQ anthems ("Booty Call"). It may prove disappointing to some fans that have been waiting for Love to truly stretch out the sound he debuted over 10 years ago, but it's a minor gripe. FUNKY, Funny, folksy, from Philly...what more could i ask for? Oh yeah, Bluesy! Sounds like me. Ok,so I'm old enough to be Garret's mother.I found the 1994 G.Love and SS CD for $1. at a Flea Mkt recently. I was hooked and went out and bought the rest (retail). Hustle is my fav so far. He incorporates so many different sounds and does it so well. I rock every morning to work w/G. or Jack J (where I first heard of G.) and it's heaven when they're together.

Raping Blues.......2005-12-15

For those of you already acquainted with G Love and Special Sauce I say this: this album fits in with his previous work. Lyrically and stylistically the songs are closest to Philadelphonic - and he even closes with a solo acoustic blues song very similar to "Gimme some Lov'n." For those who are G Love fans and enjoy his past work, this record will not disappoint.

Now to address those of you who aren't familiar with this music. My argument in favor of G Love's music is this. G Love has come along and somehow managed to incorporate elements of so many styles: rock and roll, funk, blues, jazz, folk, and - hip-hop. His records are hard to classify, but so what. When he rips into a harmonica solo (as he does often on this record) you feel you could be listening to Howling Wolf. The first track (astronaut) sounds a bit like Lenny Kravitz. But beware: the second tune is more hip-hop infused. I would say the music is a perfect hybrid for our modern times.

G Love and Special sauce are three people. G-love plays the electric guitar, acoustic guitar, slide-guitar, and harmonica. There is a jazz bassist who adds heavily to the band's sound, adding to the rhythm and often pushing the melody as well. The drummer has a busy sound, one that often sets the backdrop for G Love's raps. On this record there are plenty of other musicians to fill out the texture, from backup singers to pianos. My only G Love complaint on this record is his lyrics - they are limited to hooking up with some chick, being stoned, or talk abstractly about "love." I know it's his name and all, but he would be better served expanding his lyrics occasionally to say something different or more important.

G. Love Does Not Disappoint.......2005-10-27

I have been a fan of G. Love and Special Sauce for several years. While his other albums are great, "The Hustle" has somehow topped all of them. It offers a well rounded listening experience, frequently changing pace throughout the album.

The band hits on all it's strengths in "The Hustle". The strong guitar riff in Astronaut is reminiscent of Cold Beverages, while Back of the Bus is the second coming of Rodeo Clowns.

While other albums such as "Coast to Coast Motel" have a distinctly different sound, "The Hustle" is a compilation of all the band's experimentations. This album exemplifies the versatility that makes G. Love and Special Sauce great.

fantastic .......2005-10-24

I own all 6 G Love albums. This one was the first I bought and it remains my favourite. I was one of many who discovered G Love through Jack Johnson. The first time I heard 'the Hustle', I couldn't stand the first 5 of 6 tracks. It was the more acoustic second half of the cd that got me hooked. 'Front Porch Lounger' and 'Sunshine' were played over and over again on my cd player.

Eventually all the tracks grew on me and it became one of those rare albums that I could play right the way through without having to skip a track. I will never get bored of G Love's unique sloppy blues/rap sound. It has a very relaxing feel to it without being boring. The catchy guitar riffs and funky beats keep you interested. This is one of my top 5 albums.

Surely not mainstream... and all the better for not being .......2005-04-15

I should admit that I listen to a plethora of different music, and pretty much get sick of hearing the same songs on the radio repeatedly. Having bought this album because one of my friends, (who has had repeatedly had great taste in music) was upset we missed G. Love at Bumbershoot in Seattle one year, I was pleasantly surprised initially. On the first roll through I enjoyed the complexity, and after that I was hooked. My husband heard it the first time upon borrowing my car and asked who it was. Later that week I found "Hustle" missing from my car, and it just happened to turn up in his. I would recommend this CD to anyone looking for a little something different. And although I was not a G.Love-addict prior to this album, I will be anxiously awaiting his next!!

Van McCoy's music was very happy,uplifting,and melodic.Originally on the Avco/H&L"Hugo&Luigi label.This compilation comes to you via the folks at"Amherst Records in Buffalo,New York.The remastering is superb on this compilation.I would suggest that anyone who is a fan of the 70's era genre of dance music,add this to their collection.Most people probably don't know that McCoys"Hustle"was the first 12"inch record ever produced commercially!Love is the answer was also available as a 12"single.The only suggestion I would have for the folks at "Amherst Records"Is to release your next Van McCoy compilation with the original long versions of these timeless classics!

and classy CD is this one here. I only knew 3 Songs before, obviously the Hustle, The Shuffle (still probably one of my all time favorite songs ever) and Soul Cha Cha. Besides the Super Hustle Mix (Song Nbr 1) of The Hustle, they are all original recordings and thanks to digitally remastering they sound superb! If you only know Van McCoy because of the Hustle and if you love it as much as i do, then go ahead and buy this CD, you won't regret it and *Keep On Hustlin'" :-)

This is actually one of the best mixtapes I've ever bought. You can listen str8 thru all of the tracks with the exception of "Destiny" which I thought was not very good. Great job in the Grand Hustle Camp, tho

Decent compilation from the King of the South, and his Court........2007-01-19

T.I. is one of my favorite commerial emcees, and his last solo release, King., solidified his spot as one of the best in the game today. Now, naturally, being such a large fan of Tip, I've wanted to enjoy some of his crew as well. Unfortunately, none of T.I.'s crew hold a candle to him, and most of them are borderline wack. Veteran B.G., and Tip's personal protege, Young Dro, both hold their own on this release, and Big Kuntry is decent, if not anything more; but the rest of the people T.I. has put on over the past couple years have made me question Tip's judgement of other emcee's talents.

T.I.'s rarely on this album, although he is the most featured artist, finding a spot on five of the album's fourteen cuts(Young Dro is on three); the tracks with Tip are undoubtedly the highlights, or at the very least, the four that could be considered 'new material'(two of which, ironically, are remixes) are; My Girl with Young Dro, though, is found on Young Dro's debut in exact form. The Yeah remix is decent, if only for Tip's verse, while the Rashad Morgan-laced Tell 'Em What They Wanna Hear is tight, despite it's instrumental sounding eerily familiar to Wait(The Whipser Song). The Top Back remix is definitely the stand-out cut on this album, and with two Southern powerhouses like Jeezy and Tip on the track, it's no wonder T.I. releases this as the single to move units. While it's probably not as good as the original(face it, T.I. is a far better emcee than any of the guests on the remix), it still sounds highly dope when sat next to most of the material found on this album. The T.I.-solo cut, Where They At, is also another incentive to purchase this album, for those who need a T.I. fix while waiting on T.I. Vs. T.I.P. later this year.

Young Dro provides a nice cut on Grand Hustle Mafia, one of a couple Khao produced tracks; each of which are some of the album's highlights. Khao even raps on Grand Hustle Beatmaker, and does a decent job; the beat on that track is excellent, however. The virtual-unknown, Alfamega, also shows promise on his one and only feature, found mid-album; he goes much deeper than most of T.I.'s associates on Da One, but isn't too profound to throw off the initial Grand Hustle fanbase. Big Kuntry and B.G.'s collaboration is decent, and so is B.G.'s solo cut, but they're definitely nothing to write home about. Governor is also a rather talented crooner, and his Scott Storch produced Destiny track, which closes the album, ends this rather mixed-bag of treats with some wholesome soul food.

On the other side of this album, when it's not mediocre with Big Kuntry and B.G., it's downright attrocious with Xtaci and Mac Boney. Mac Boney, a member of the P$C, is going absolutely nowhere at this rate; and that's probably for the best. Xtaci, on the other hand, is horrible; there's no sugar-coating that. Only half of the album's beats are hot, too; if you were as spoiled by T.I.'s King as myself, hearing something like In Da Streetz Vol. 4's production maybe tough to swallow.

In the end, In Da Streetz Vol. 4 is worth checking out, but be forewarned. It's merely decent, and nothing more; you may get a week out of the majority of the tracks, but it's ultimately forgettable. The Top Back remix is the main selling point for a reason, and the T.I. and Young Dro solo cuts are also more reason to purchase this; if you're not a hardcore T.I. or Grand Hustle fan though, it's not recommended.

Sometime around 1981 (things are a little fuzzy from those years) I was hanging out in the Mudd Club. One night I heard the DJ play a reggae version of "Dont Stop Till You Get Enough". I was a big fan of "Off The Wall" and I thought this version was perfect. I didn't find out who did the song though, and spent the next couple of decades trying to track it down. Thanks to the magic of the internet and Amazon I found it on this outstanding compilation. It's loaded with some of the great reggae disco classics that were filling the club floors in the 1980s. Every track is excellent. Maybe I could have done without the Xanadu/Sweet Lady version of "Rappers Delight" - it doesnt add a lot to the original. The whole album makes me want to get out my Tenax hair gel and head out to the club.

This CD is okay. I really like the single "Til the Wheels Fall Off". I'd put this cd in the same category with Kanye West as far as its sound. Most of the tracks are fairly mellow.

They are by no means wack but not exactly standout acts. Naledge reminds me abit of Lupe Fiasco just not as complex or tight and Double O's production is Kanye West-esque but not as sharp or unique. The standout is "Wheelz Fall Off" b'cuz its a remake of sorts of Souls Of Mischief's "93 til infinity" which is one of my all time favourite songs. Its also a standout b'cuz this is the best example of beats and rhymes from the duo by far. Its a nice album overall but again like Norfeest's review said, you probabaly wont be rushing to play this again 5months down the line. Tracks like "Ritalin", "Ms. Juanita", "Hypocrite" and "Day by Day" are all good, the others are abit weaker and very unoriginal. Now let me reiterate this is by NO MEANS a wack album its definitely NOT the album its being made out to be. All this "best underground album" and "the ones to ressurect Rawkus" is off the mark so dont get caught up in the hype. Not a bad album as a debut with potential.

Go Back To School {2.5 Stars}.......2007-02-13

Anyone that knows me knows that early 90's hip hop is what I live for...especially '94. I bought this album months ago because of the (misleading) reviews and I've been somewhat disgruntled with and disappointed in this album, so I figured I'd give folks a heads up before they made the same mistake. I was gonna ignore this album and not review it until I read the previous review. Unless you can remember cats biting Jay Z's flow over B level production back in '93 - '96, I'd have to say that this sounds nothing like the golden era stuff. Anyone who says otherwise was probably just getting into rap in '00. Here's an off the wall idea: Let's quit trying to heap all kinds of praise and accolades on this group and let them actually earn them. Bottom line: the rhymes are decent, but they aren't saying much and the production is decent but nothing out of this world like you're being told. You've heard it before, trust me.

There are some positives though. "Wheelz Fall Off (06' Til)" is easily my favorite. Not because of the rhymes but because "93 'Til Infinity" is one of the best beats I've ever heard in my life (I use the original instrumental as theme music....no, seriously, I do) and I'm a sucker for any incarnation of it. Outside of that, and a few nice beats here and there, I found a large amount of this album pretty much forgettable. Ask yourself, will you be reaching for this album 5 months from now? Probably not.

School Was My Hustle is a solid, though somewhat uneven, release from the the Kidz. I think some underground heads feel compelled to say this is great even though it's just okay. Don't let the little razor blade logo dictate to you whether you should like it or not. These are average lyrics over above average production. If I'm being honest, I'd have to say that this sounds like plain pop rap by an act that couldn't get signed by Pharrell. Again, don't let that razor blade logo fool you... I recommend downloading this album and testing it out before you actually pay for it.

Standout Tracks: Wheelz Fall Off (06' Til) (My Favorite)

Throwback to Hip-Hop's classic era of 93-96..........2007-01-25

Simply put, this was one of the best hip-hop albums I've heard in a while. While maybe not as lyrically adept as Ghost or the Clipse (the other two stellar 2006 hip-hop releases) the combination of beats and rhymes had me pining for the summer of '94.

One listen to "Go Ill" should confirm this which has a floating melody reminiscent of other early 90's production from groups like the Digable Planets.

Speaking of production, while the beats for the most part are slammin' (skip Ms. Juanita however) you get the feeling that Rawkus (who are issuing their "rebirth" with this release) didn't have the budget to really shore up the mixing as sometimes they just don't bang like they perhaps should.

Nevertheless tracks like "Ritalin," "Wassup Jo," "Wheelz Fall Off," which uses the beat from the SOM's "93 Till Infinity" and "Dumbass Tales" pack a good punch sonically. (Also, check for an all too familiar beat that's been used by Just Blaze lately.)

MC Naledge does DJ Double O's tracks justice with a tight yet not overly imposing flow and shows he's equally adept and punch-lines and stories (see "Hypocrite.")

While Rawkus has lost some of their torch-bearers from their previous incarnation (Mos Def, Talib etc) "School Was My Hustle" is a great way to hit the "reset" switch.

The College Graduate........2007-01-19

Back in the late-nineties, when Diddy and his gang of faux-Big Poppas were dominating the airwaves, a little label called Rawkus answered hip-hop's heads cries; they gave them dope music. Black Star's album was brilliant, and showed that you didn't have to do your best 2Pac/B.I.G. impersonation to get noticed in the game; something most emcees have still yet to learn. Classic solo debuts from Pharoahe Monch, Talib, and Mos Def also helped solidify the label as a major force in the game, and the largest independent hip-hop label; then, things started to crumble. Fast forward to 2006, and Rawkus are introducing new artists, hoping to find relevance in hip-hop again, and perhaps, even strike gold yet again.

Kidz In the Hall won't be the group to bring acclaim back to Rawkus, though. Naledge is no Talib Kweli, and Naledge is no Hi-Tek; while both are talented artists, they're not phenomenal, as some die-hard Rawkus fans would like you to believe; they definitely have untapped potential, and talent, but as we speak, both of these individuals have a long way to go before they master their craft. Most of the hip-hop debuts found throughout 2006 were more about potential than they were about current quality, though, and Naledge and Double-O join Rhymefest as rookies who can go nowhere but up in the industry.

But, are their current incarnations talented enough to warrant purchasing this album? Honestly, I can't answer that. There's nothing on this album you haven't heard; from the flows, to the rhymes, to the beats. While they both have a lot of room for improvement, that's virtually their key-assett; as of now, there's little difference between them and the kids you know that kick freestyles on the playground. Naledge may claim that school was his hustle, but he doesn't exactly put his Ivy League education to great use on this album; lyrically, it's fair, but again, it's nothing you haven't heard before from a generic conscious emcee; and yes, those exist. Naledge's flow is also lacking many elements.. while he's technically sound, he sounds no different than the average Chi-town emcee, except he lacks many of their distinguished personalities. Lupe, Kanye, and 'Fest are still on top of Chi for a reason, whether you dislike them because of their commercialism or not.

Double-O often sounds like a novice Just Blaze. Now, don't get me wrong, I love Just Blaze; he's one of my favorite producers. However, without Blaze's polish, and soul-chopping techniques, Blaze's production would be rather lackluster; and unfortunately, that's exactly what Double-O's is. While this maybe an independent release, the sound quality on the most of the production is pretty embarrassing, and hinders this release; much like his emcee counterpart, Double-O is technically sound, but he lacks anything that sets him apart from the pack.

These two maybe Ivy League students, but after hearing School Was My Hustle, you'll be inclined to go back to the College Dropout. The concept's been done, and much better; it's not even really in effect in this album. Both Kidz have a lot of potential, but they're only average at the moment, and lacking character. Bottomline is, Kidz In The Hall's debut is worth checking out, but not much beyond that. Recommended if you want a brief glimpse of the future, but you'd probably be better waiting for a Sophomore effort(which, if released on Rawkus, may never see the light of day).

Ill be honest I have never listened to Cormega before and Iam sorry I didnt I have been missing out I got this album about a week ago and I love it I would say my favorite tracks are One Love writting a letter back to Nas who mentioned Cormega in his One Love track on Illmatic Angel Dust has a great instrumental 62 Pick up hes in court and before he is sentenced do you have anything to say Montana Diary is also one of my favorites overall the instrumentals are great the lyrics are great and if there is anyone out there that was like me and has never listend or given a shot to Cormega give him one this album caught me by suprise and I have been listing to it for a week now

Instant Classic.......2006-07-15

This is the fourth full release from Cormega but it contains some of his earliest work, including the controversial Dead Man Walking which was I believe the first rap song to be banned by a record label. He released a lot of this stuff before he was well-known. He polished up those tracks to put this album together. It is an instant classic. Tracks that go above and beyond the call of real hip-hop duty: One Love, Dead Man Walking, Testament (Original), Coco Butter.

Cormega - The Testament.......2006-03-16

This album is straight ill. Cormega rips the lyrics. The beats are good! And this time he spits really good to all of them. I was feelin about every single track on here. Hes always spittin real lyrics that make some sense and matter. So if you like real rap and sh** then check Cormega out. You wont be dissapointed at his flows. All his album are at least decent. All I gotta say, check it.

A good look back to the East Coast in its prime.......2005-05-12

A relatively short LP, Cormega brings heat on his "debut."

1. Intro 5/5...It is good as far as album intro's go.

2. 62 Pickup 5/5...This paints a vivid picture of a "stickup."

3. One Love 5/5...Starting the track with a Nas sample it follows through with solid lyrics and a decent beat.

4. Interlude 2/5... Unnecissary and annoying

5. Angel Dust 3/5...A repetative sipmle beat, and mediocre lyrics from 'Mega and Havoc.

6. Dead Man Walking 3/5...Decent track with a weak chorus but a nice some nice Al Pachino samples.

7. Montana Diary 5/5...A good song with one of the best beats on the album.

8/9. Testament/Original 5/5...The original and new versions are almost indistinguishable but have a good beat including a voice saying "the rest of my life."

10. Every Hood 3/5...A decent attempt at making a "sad hood song" with bland R&B vocals in the chorus and the ever inevitable Pac and Biggie shoutouts(what would an album be without them?).

11. Coco Butter 4/5...A decent love song with a catchy chorus.

12. Killaz Theme 5/5... Solid lyrics brought on this track by Mobb Deep.

13. Love is Love 4/5...Solid song that sounds like the intro but extended.

14. Dead Man Walking (Remix) 3/5...Alright but still is missing something in the flow department.

In spite of the constant references made about this album as being Latin-tinged, I find it more of a "must listen to" reference for fans of folk and alternative, in general, and Broken Social Scene (BSS), more specifically. Andrew Whiteman, lead guitar for BSS, heads up this project and blends his insanely creative guitar work with the most gorgeous vocal harmonies and percussion to yield song after song that make "Folkloric Feel" an album to love and play on repeat over and over.

Not as good as broken social scene, but still good.......2004-09-21

A great release from one of the lead guitarists of Broken Social Scene. An atmospheric and dreamy, while also upbeat and engaging album that has a tendency to put a spell on me. I'll start listening to the CD, and then I'll get put into this trance where I completely lose track of time. Next thing I know the CD is over.
The album starts off with the repetition of the bluesy riff on "folkloric feel" that will start to draw you in. After the magical "baby your in luck" you'll be hooked. By the time you hear the hypnotizing "they shoot horses don't they" you will be completely be emersed in the Folkloric Feel.
So why only four stars. Well, a couple of songs, such as "kings and queens",although great songs, tend to drag on a little too long and become kind of boring.
Although there may be a lack of consistency, the album creates an amazing world of sound in your head that will pluck you from the worries of the everyday world, and make you feel ok (at least for an hour).
