5 out of 5 stars Essential for Banjo Players.......2007-06-08

First heard this on the Elektra release many years ago. Fine contrast between the melodic style and the older, more traditional Scruggs style of banjo picking. If you are just learning or an expert, this album bears repeat listening for inspiration. You too can play like this, if you just practice enough. Excellent mixing and if you adjust the balance on your old stereo you can isolate the dueling banjos. As an old picker, I would say this is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the Best CD I own.......2007-04-03

I bought this CD based on the movie sound track and have discovered that it is probably one of the best banjo CD's out there. I highly recommend this CD for anyone even remotely interested in banjo music.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Blast From The Past.......2007-03-27

Many a neophyte banjo player in the 1960's wore out their original Elektra produced LP of "New Dimensions in Banjo and Bluegrass" by Eric Weisberg and Marshall Brickman. The first widely disseminated demonstrations of "melodic style" banjo as differentiated from the traditional three finger "Scruggs Style" banjo were found on those wonderful vinyl tracks. Now this reissue is available with the bonus of the Dueling Banjos title cut. That perfomance helped to catapult the banjo into a yet higher level of music appreciation world-wide. For banjo players, this is a "must have" album. The pioneering melodic work of Eric Weisberg and Marshall Brickman are now preserved for the the next generation of 5-string banjo pickers. If you don't have yours yet, get one now. These digital grooves will last longer than my old LP.

4 out of 5 stars Dueling Banjos.......2007-03-19

Getting the original theme song from the movie Deliverance is worth it all by itself. The rest is really good pickin' stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Deliverance Soundtrack.......2007-01-12

This is by far the best traditional bluegrass album ever created. Many times bluegrass albums add instruments such as piano drums. Personally I like a tradional bluegrass band that includes banjo, guitar, bass, fiddle, mandolin and even dobro. This CD has this. The banjo playing makes for a fun, bouncing lead that truly drives the music. The fiddle adds a driving almost haunting sound. The guitar and bass add a strong yet musically exciting backdrop to the entire repertoire. Being a bluegrass banjo and guitar player myself, I highly recommend this CD if you are looking for straight-forward traditional bluegrass music.

Deliverance evokes the sounds of a kinder, gentler era of heavy rock, a time before there was moshing. In those days, if you wanted to end up prone on a crowded coliseum floor and get stomped on, you just drank and smoked until you passed out where you stood. With this record Corrosion of Conformity, one of the most influential and caustic punk bands of the mid-'80s, make a dramatic shift toward groovy, Southern-fried metal á la Lynyrd Skynyrd, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and ZZ Top, and they do it quite convincingly. Fans of their previous releases may not think that's a good thing, but this album might snare a whole new crowd of devotees. --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Special Album.......2007-01-29

'Deliverance' by Corrosion of Conformity is, without question, an album that anyone who is even remotely interested in heavy music should own. I have had this album for over a decade, and I am still not tired of it.

It amazes me how unknown and unappreciated this album is. This album is in the same boat as Temple of the Dog, an amazing album that most people will never hear. It really is that good, so go buy it.

boy,did i ever make a mistake....
this is fantastic stuff!as many other reviewers have pointed out, this is along the southern fried black sabbath riff-a-thon.
songs are well written,musicianship solid.

5 out of 5 stars EPIC.......2005-05-04

Sure Pepper was in COC when Blind was recorded, but this album marks the beginning of a band and a sound that has no equals.

Most people revere this album as some kind of hallowed gem and they are correct. The first COC album to be dominated by Pepper's songwriting and singing - it showcases a talent in music that few can match. It's like Pepper comes from some super-planet of music - where maybe the only other inhabitant is Tony Iommi or something.

But this album also makes it VERY clear that Mike, Woody, and Reed are monsters in their own right. They collectively create something that oozes virtuosity. Each player is a master of their sound and instrument and it all comes together in some hazy dreamlike brilliance.

This album is required material. After countless spins - my fav song is `Pearls Before Swine'. That rumbling bass line and the amazing blast into the hook is unbelievably good. WOW!

4 out of 5 stars Southern discontent plenty showed.......2005-02-23

Corrosion Of Conformity can speed their sound and go mental as in their beginings or either can slow down the madness and be more judgemental, but always they will stand for their ideological and political tougths "better to live on your feet than die on your knees" they know how to use their freedom of expresion , freedom of speech, freedom of free asociation, they have bveen always very extreme when it comes about the emancipation of ideas regarding the system that involves the goverment institutions, their message is very clear "united we stand" and of course in not that deep issues, they simply love to play good southern rock and metal and enjoy cold beers.

As ussual, sabbath is the constant in the guitar riffs, souther rock in vocals and attitude and all this comes in a political concept that is present in every record since "technocracy" when their direction pointed to hardcore and punk, but when "blind" was released they were more oriented to hard rock and metal style and their southern roots and they obtained critics recognition.

Now , according to recent COC statements they have returned in some percentage to speed and ferocity in their upcoming album "In the arms of God" lets wait to see if they blow our minds away once again

3 out of 5 stars Weak vocals, experimental but not pathbreaking.......2007-06-26

Not one of the strongest discs in their collection, in my opinion. The vocals are stretched pretty thin, the thrash moments are pretty benign, the mid-tempo soaring guitars are good not great. Still, it's experimental enough - as always Opeth is never afraid, never bowed.

Maybe buy this one later, to fill in your collection (and if you're doing that, why aren't you looking at the box set?) - and if you're new, take a look at Ghost Reveries and Damnation.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get much better than this.......2007-01-10

Opeth is the most creative band out there at this time. You need to own this CD.

4 out of 5 stars My Metal Discovery Part Deux.......2006-12-31

I am openly NOT an advocate of Death Metal,BUT when done in such a crafty
fashion as these guys one has to but stop and listen to know that they go beyond metal and prog. There are some beautiful melodies going on not to mention some fantastic playing. "Wreath" is not to my liking and that's why it gets 4 stars, otherwise this is an almost flawless cd.

This is what PROG. means: going beyond the "already done that" and not rehashing. Many prog bands are guilty of this, they just do what other bands have done and call themselves Neo-Prog...hogwash!!!That's musical plagarism.

Opeth sets the bar high for progressive bands, in general because nobody has done what they have. Opeth is the future of Prog Metal. Long live Metal. \o/

5 out of 5 stars Opeth Maintain Their Brilliance.......2006-12-22

Sweden's Opeth, one of metal's finest artists of this generation unleashes one of their heaviest releases to date. Since the early 1990's, Opeth have mesmerized audiences with their fusion of progressive death metal. 2002 brought fans a metal onslaught mixed with beauty. Originally meant to be released as a double-disc with 2003's Damnation, Deliverance found itself to be another gem that Opeth has skillfully written and flawlessly recorded.

`Wreath' is a fast and heavy piece, one that immediately catches the attention of the listener with its ferocity and beautiful progressive breakdowns. Mikael Akerfeld's vocals continue to shine and his death metal growl is amongst the best in the entire genre. His clean vocals are also worthy of mention. The title track, `Deliverance,' is one of the best songs that Opeth have ever composed. This song is a fan favorite and is played on nearly every live set. `A Fair Judgement' is a beautiful track that contains one of my favorite solos that Opeth have ever done. `Master's Apprentices' is another song worth mention that has very memorable riffs along with poetic lyrics.

Do not be drawn away by six tracks total for this recording. All five songs (one of them is a short, instrumental song) are over 10 minutes long. Musically, Opeth are widely considered to be one of the most talented bands in the genre. Their live performance is also breathtaking. I have had the privilege to see them perform various times including their Chronology set in Los Angeles. Deliverance is a marvelous album to have in one's collection. I know people who do not even enjoy metal, but like pleasure in Opeth's music. These Swedish masters continue their sheer dominance with 2002's Deliverance.

5 out of 5 stars My Arms Your Hearse Meets Technicality.......2006-10-01

Purpose

The purpose of this review is to inform, as impartially as possible, as to the quality of this product, rate it, explain why I came to this conclusion, as well as pass on any helpful information to the reader that could aid in finding similar products. Hope it helps.

Critique

The sixth Opeth album, this is questionably Opeth's heaviest, and quite possibly their best. It has almost every bit of the heaviness of 'Hearse', yet combined with the technicality of 'Blackwater Park' two-fold; in MHO, anyway. And that's one potent combination.

Comaprison

What is Opeth? Opeth basically defies classification. The words beautiful, brooding, sometimes intense, sometimes soft, sometimes eerie, and always beautiful come to mind. Yet that is a pale description. It's death metal, but not about blood and gore, like Cattle Decapitation, and like bands, (No offense, fans of aforementioned.) with long, progressive song structures, and is truly of an unsurpassed quality. Just me, but I've never encountered a more consistantly impressive band in this genre, that not only brings everything death metal, but also beauty. And I don't mean what some consider to be twisted, perverted beauty either. For that, type in keyword_Slayer_, or _Emperor_. Once agin, no offense to fans; good music, but the lyrics are a bit, um, extreme, for my tastes.

Album Breakdown

This album is all but entirely dominated by some of the heaviest, fastest, most intense, and at the same time most beautiful riffs of any Opeth album, and that's saying something. Very few acoustical "softer" sections here, so if you are a fan of Opeth's earlier work, such as 'Morningrise', or of their all-acoustical album 'Damnation', and death metal vox bother you, then this may not be for you. Personally, I love the heaviness and death metal vocals, but it obviously depends on the person. Just a heads' up.

Similar Bands

Agalloch (Slower than Opeth, Black metal vocals, slightly inferior); recommended albums: Pale Folklore, and The Mantle. Pale Folklore is the heaviest of the two.) Ulver (Strictly Black metal, before switching over to electronic music. I know, WTF? but their three Black metal albums are great. They are, in descending intensity; Nattans Madrigal, Bergtatt, and Kveldssanger.)

Bottom Line

If you are an Opeth fan and don't have this album yet, you're missing out, BIG time. It's heavy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Enjoy and happy searching.

I believe that music is the universal language and that the Lord God Almighty made it so that in times of tragedy and travail we have an outlet to lift up our voices to be heard and He does and is quick to respond. In times of gladness a joyful noise is '...a sweet sound to His ears...'
The music on this C.D. has all the elements that give us joy in all those times and speaks to us from the throne room.
To Beth Moore and her music ministers, rock on!!! YOu have lifted me up.

To call the Drive-By Truckers an alt-country band is a disservice--to the Truckers and their Buzzcocks-meet-the-Outlaws brand of punk-rock twang, as well as to most alt-country bands, which hardly belong in the same county as DBT, let alone borrowing the same genre. This remastered re-release of the Alabama foursome's 1999 sophomore record picks up where its debut album Gangstabilly (also re-issued by New West Records) left off--fruitful storyteller Patterson Hood and his cotton-drawl vocals bobbing and weaving through the trepidations and peculiarities of his life in the Deep South. The Truckers abstain from some of the white-trash bulls-eyes and volume 11 blasters on their debut for a 14-song hootenanny about riding bulldozers in red clay, a reclusive uncle, giving up sex for the Lord, and a Memphis performance by the late shock-rocker G.G. Allin. The bluesy sing-a-long "Nine Bullets" features one round of lead for each of Hood's adversaries, but two songs later he harmoniously reminisces his great-grandmother in "Box of Spiders." It's a remarkable divergence that drives Pizza Deliverance and sets the table for the Southern Rock Opera that comes next. - Scott Holter

Album Description

Re-issue of the long out of print CD by the Drive-By Truckers. Re-mastered with up-dated linner notes from Patterson Hood.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sweeter with time.......2005-12-26

This album is just like its title -- it gets better each time you hear it.

When I first bought the album, I thought it was the weak link of my Truckers collection. But one year and about 100 listens later, I found myself in a Tuscaloosa coffee shop asking Patterson before a concert to play more from it. You don't find much more Southern honesty than from DBT, especially in Pizza Deliverance. His stories of a great grandmother who was "too mean to die," a desire to use his roommate's gun to get rid of some of the annoyances in his life, relations with an older woman and his sister-in-law, and attending a G.G. Allen concert with fellow DBT singer Mike Cooley are too good lyrically not to hear. And by the way, if you think this guy can tell a tale, you ought to hear him elaborate on some of the songs in concert. Still, Cooley's the best lyricists of the three singers, and Jason Isbell was a perfect addition starting with Decoration Day.

5 out of 5 stars 99% Killer and 1% Filler.......2005-06-01

This was the Trucker's second album, but was pretty much the songs they toured on when they first started out. In the liner notes, Patterson Hood states that they basically wanted to capture all those tunes even though "Gangstabilly" was the first release. This album has a lot of songs on it. As a result, the album seems kind of long to me, but really, there's only maybe one annoying song on the whole album. So, 13/14 ain't too bad.

First, the annoying one: "The President's Penis is Missing" is basically a jokey-jokey song not only about Clinton but a whole bunch of former U.S. presidential affairs. Might have been funny at the time, but seeing as how I got this CD in the middle of Bush's second term, it's outdated, and the music sounds like it belongs in a circus act. And for those of you keeping political score at home - it's neither defending or condemning these affairs, but just basically says it is what it is.

I'm not going to do a blow by blow of the rest of the tunes. They're all pretty great in their own way, and my favorites change depending on the day of the week. One notable is "The Company I Keep." To me, this is classic Patterson Hood. Just like Robert Plant claims "Kashmir" is the quintessential Led Zeppelin tune, "The Company I Keep" is THE ANTHEM of the DBT. Again, it's not my favorite tune, but the chorus is catchy as all get-out.

Mike Cooley's tunes, "Uncle Frank" and "One of These Days" are always in my head. If you google the Tennessee Valley Authority you'll find tons of sites discussing how great it was for Alabama. "Uncle Frank" tells the story from a different opinion. "One of These Days" seems to be about a rite of passage to me, or at least how different places and events can change a person.

"Pizza Deliverance" should have been an indication that these guys were destined for great things.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album of the Decade (so far) ..........2007-07-23

This is, without a doubt, the best album of the decade so far. Whether you are a fan of rap music or hip hop or not, "Deliverance" is a landmark album that's as urgent, insightful and experimental as the genre will allow within its small confines. From the country strains of standout cuts like "Coming Round", "Jimmy Mathis" and the title cut, Sparxxx's rural Georgia upbringing is utilized to its fullest, sending a message as powerful as we have heard from rap since its early days, when the music actually conveyed some important social issues other than gangbanging, pop hooks and endless posturing. The perfect hybrid of various musical styles encompassing everything from crunk to bluegrass, "Deliverance" is a considerable artistic achievement that will likely remain on most critics' "Best Albums" lists long after bigger sellers like Eminem and 50 Cent are has-been pop history footnotes. Give Timbaland and Bubba high marks for making an album more personal and introspective than one would expect from a sophomore CD to a popular selling debut. They both must have known this would be a hard sell to contemporary pop radio programmers (since they insist on hit singles that can be easily categorized) yet still avoid the temptation to release a cookie-cutter "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" follow-up like most breakout artists today almost always do. Everyone involved with this project should be proud of what they accomplished. "Deliverance" is not only adventurous and groundbreaking, it is also nothing short of brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars, really, really good cd period........2005-08-13

First off, Im from a chicago suburb so thats how good this cd is for me to give it this star rating. The rap around here compared to souther rap is like comparing apples and oranges. Im not that much of a fan for southern rap but bubba sparxx on deliverance exceeded all expectations. I havn't heard his first cd expect for ugly which I didnt really like to begin with. My friend picked up this cd and I was skeptical at first but this cd is so smooth and fresh it was probaly the the best cd I heard all year. This cd had everyting, good drinknig songs, good anthem songs, and good personal laid back chill songs. you can defineataly play the whole cd without skipping a song. My fav songs r jimmy mathis, comn round, nowhere, warrant and deliverance. This cd has no bad songs to skip through no joke. about 3 are ok but no bad ones. Bubba gives his all on this cd from his awesome party anthems to his deep, personal childhood songs, I dont know how his nxt cd can top this 1, his career best no doubt, pick up this cd no matter where you live.

    Product Description

As Above ~ So Below is a prayer that things would be on earth, as they are in heaven. Musically, this 13th album represents a unilateral step forward in the heavy music genre; few groups have ever blended epic thrash / speed metal with the elegance and beauty of progressive metal (later period Deliverance) with such devastating skill and brutality. Never has a Deliverance album alternated so many moments of beauty (e.g.The Omen inspired opening track) with beastly moments of metallic fury and spine snapping riffs that would seem right at home on a Slayer, Believer, or early Deliverance album. The end result is arguably the heaviest Deliverance album yet. Jimmy continues to deliver vocal melodies that are as commanding as a thundering voice from above. What no one could have anticipated is that the band would deliver one of the most enormous-sounding metal records ever made. In our minds, it seems like the album is a piece of heaven here on earth, which, ironically means that the album is an answer to its own prayer! 10 Tracks / 51 Minutes

5 out of 5 stars The new is old....is new.......2007-05-04

Big D. One of the forefathers of the christian thrash/speed movement are finally back after, what, six years? This one delves back into the Stay of Excecution/Learn years with just a hint of the thrash that they are still so fondly remembered for on their fist two albums. Seems Jimmy Brown, who is the machine driving D, just doesn't want to play speed demon anymore. Vocally, it's a little more gritty then his latter work but the Bowie influence is still the biggest factor and again it works very well with the style overall. Always able to find good rhythm players to back his riff monster outings the sound here is a sort of progressive/light thrash metal.
Lyrically it's kind of all over, addressing skeptics of christianity, personal pleas to be more like Him above, and what sounds like a bite at those who use religion for personal gain. The lyrics show as much change and growth as the music from the first two albums. D started with just blatant and often direct quotes from the Bible to more allegory and introspection, yet their is really no question where they stand and hope is shining through.
I highly recommend this for any lover of metal in a progressive fashion. If it was any more technical and a little faster it would start moving into the Nevermore range. I love it and give it 4.5 stars as I really would like a song or two of just outright speed as in the old days.

5 out of 5 stars GET READY TO HOLD OUT AMERICA.......1998-10-22

This CD will encourage your soul and help you to hold out. James Bignon brings back that classically convicting strong vocal of his in this new album along with the Delieverance Mass Choir. For a gospel album done in the studio this is the best I've every heard. If you don't buy another gospel album this year don't miss out on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Very spiritual and encouraging........1998-10-08

The title song "On the Other Side of Through" needs to be aired on secular radio. It's message is a needed one in the political climate of our country at this time. I pray that some DJ will have the wisdom to program it. The country needs a strong spiritual message.

5 out of 5 stars A great project. The music has a message........1998-09-30

I was very encouraged by this project. The title song was especially moving. The lyrics were encouraging and the vocals were great. Rev. bignon has an outstanding project here and any listener will be Blessed
