5 out of 5 stars A treasure trove for blues guitarists.......2001-11-19

If you want to hear what really good blues guitar playing sounds like, Anson sparkles on this one. You'll hear t. bone walker's quiet soulfulness and b.b. king's deep lyricism welling up in riffs shimmering, sonorous, passionate and fresh. Anson will help you appreciate the old blues masters by demonstrating what it means to play with your heart and not your head. He is one of the few contemporary blues guitarists who gets it.

First I gotta admit that I prefere that straight up hardcore-rap, but when I listen to hollis it`s all good! He`s one of the best producers I know. Not that hard but his beats are very diffrent then most of these smooth producers. The first songs aren`t that bad but with C-BO`s "paper made" the show begins!!! Buy this album!!!

5 out of 5 stars Singing from the heart: The Choir of Hard Knocks.......2007-06-30

The Choir of Hard Knocks is a group of homeless and disadvantaged people in Australia who have been singing together since September 2006.

Their voices (both collectively and individually) are simply awesome and this album is a tribute to them. The founding director of the choir is Jonathon Welch, and Jimmy Barnes has been a great supporter.

Some of the tracks (in particular 'Hallelujah' and 'Amazing Grace') are inspiring.

Recommended to all who believe in the power of song. The royalties from the sale of this CD keep the choir singing!

4 out of 5 stars Ghetto Love.......2005-07-16

It took me a while to track this album down, but it was worth the wait. This is a real album, full of street narratives and socially concious rhymes...not a commercial crumb in it. The beats are all on point - I was pleasantly surprised, especially w/ "A Dirty Cop Named Harry," "Ghetto Love," & "Young Guns." The MC's are nothing special, however their messages and presense are fitting to the dark vibe of the album.

Bottom Line: SoHKs have a message and all Hip-Hop heads should hear it...and nod their heads while doing so. 4 stars, Peace.

With one song about a pair of renegade women doing their best to emulate "Thelma and Louise" and another a coming-of-age ballad about "The Trouble with Trouble" ("is that it starts out as fun"), Trish Murphy explores the reckless edge of the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" theme. The breathy rasp of Murphy's vocals and the melodic buoyancy of her tunes should appeal to a younger audience than most Texas troubadours, with fans of the sassier side of the Dixie Chicks finding a kindred spirit here. Though romance rarely runs smoothly in Murphy's material, even songs such as "Crying as Fast as I Can" and "Love Never Dies (It Just Gives Up)" have plenty of bounce. She shows a more reflective depth on the balladry of "One for the Boys" and "Eternal Dream," and teams with Bob Schneider for a high-kicking cover of Lyle Lovett's "Cowboy Man." In Murphy's music, country storytelling and pop catchiness make an ebullient match. --Don McLeese

        Album Description

Trish Murphy's highly anticipated fourth album, Girls Get in Free, marks the newest chapter in the story of one of Texas' most celebrated and loved singer-songwriters. The newest CD arrives as an exuberant return to the attitude and energy of Crooked Mile (Raven 1997) and Rubies on the Lawn (Doolittle/Mercury, 1999). Produced by Jim Ebert, Girls Get in Free showcases fresh and hard-won ground from a literate, incisive writer hitting her creative stride.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2005-03-31

I've been a fan of Trish's since I heard the early version of Trouble with Trouble from Captured on the radio. Since then I've seen her in concert at least half a dozen times, and I have to say that this latest album of hers is probably my favorite.

We finally get some full band versions of songs from Captured, and she's recorded some of my favorite staples from her live shows, such as All I Want, Love Never Dies, and The Eternal Dream.

There are also some great new songs like Thelma and Louise.

Trish has recently rereleased with the album with a larger record label. Hopefully this will get her the exposure she deserves.

The album is a perfect blend of rock and country music, and also manages to retain some of the energy from her live performances.

4 out of 5 stars A Glimpse Into The Journey Of Her Life.......2003-11-30

When she released Rubies On The Lawn, Trish Murphy seemed like one of the next rising stars on the fast track. She had a record deal with Mercury, and she seemed on top of the world. Then life happened. She has since lost her record deal and gone through a divorce. She alludes to the divorce in Thelma And Louise - "Now I don't mean Dallas when I mention the big d. You see married life made a meal of my best friend and me."

You almost got the sense that Rubies was what the record label wanted her to be while Girls Get In Free is a return to the music that her fans love her for. It is more in line with Crooked Mile, and it also features full band versions of three of the tunes from Captured: The Trouble With Trouble, St. Christopher, and Paralized - each enriched by the harmonies and instrumentations.

Other standout tracks on this CD are All I Want and Love Never Dies. Trish Murphy has really pulled back the curtain on this CD and shared her pain of love lost. If you are looking for big production and glitz, look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for honest muscianship and quality music, this is the place.

p.s. I did not mean for this review to be a slam of Rubies. It is actually a fine CD.

4 out of 5 stars Another example of how to make great cd's.......2003-11-12

Since "Crooked Mile" I have been a fan of Trish Murphy. After the splendid "Captured" I wondered how she could make a better one. But boy, she did. My highlight is "St. Christopher". The only thing bothering me now is could she do it again next time?

        Ofcourse!!!

5 out of 5 stars Guitars From Hell.......2004-01-06

Guitars From Hell features a smoldering lead guitar exchange by Pat Travers and Jerry Riggs. Before this tune was released Pat's encore was generally Boom Boom or Makes No Difference from his 'debut" album, but when the Pat Travers Band, also featuring Peter "Mars" Cowling" on Bass guitar, went on The School Of Hard Knocks Tour in 1986, the encore changed to this smashing, riveting and harmonic Guitars From Hell. A pure instrumental delight and soul wrenching display of guitar work from the master Patrick Henry Travers. Buy it, because every other tune on this album is a sure fire favorite. I love Daddy Long Legs, Help Me Please, a 58-second Jimmy Hendrix Purple Haze Riff, a couple of top 40 tunes and of course the blazing School of Hard Knocks.

5 out of 5 stars Back - and better than ever.......2001-06-30

This album means a lot to me. I'd been a PT fan since Makin' Magic and after playing Reading Festival in 1980, he disappeared from England for ten long years. This was the comeback album that preceded the tour and it's stunning. It's got everything. Rock, blues and a beautiful instrumental (Via Veneto). Fourteen tracks and there's not a dud among 'em. Pat was always the most exciting guitarist I ever heard, but he's a great songwriter too...and it's all here.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Pat Travers Rock 'N' Roll.......2000-05-17

For those of you who liked the Rock 'N' Roll Pat Travers, this is a sleeper. Released in 1990, you would think this was just a continuation of his career in the late 70's or early 80's. The title song is pure rocking Pat and Misty Morning in New Orleans is just extraordinary music. The entire CD is strong. This is well recorded and mixed in that its clean without taking away Pat's raw power. If you're a Rock 'N' Roll Pat fan, try to find a copy of this one, you won't be disappointed.
