Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I left planet Earth........2007-07-25

This album takes you to a different world. Each track is perfectly mixed, carrying you on to the next. This music sends you on a ride, trust me. For me, the album really picked up at "Welcome to Zion" for it's there that the dark beats come into play. The second disc is no exception. In the first track of the second disc, it sticks with some simple loops and then dives right into the second track and the ride starts again. Satoshi Tomiie absolutely mastered this CD, it does far more than his other Renaissance contemplations.

5 out of 5 stars Programmed to Perfection!!.......2007-05-13

Satoshi Tomiie blows me away again with his superbly mixed compilation album. His attention to detail and ear for music give way to a set of forward-thinking house music that defies the boundaries of any particular genre. Tech-funk and soulful melodies contribute to the joy I feel when I listen to this album. His impeccable timing and engineering skills make the set flow "just right." He beat-mixes the songs in key for extended periods of time, which really adds a subtle element of flawlessness to the journey he creates through his set. He adjusts the dynamics just right to master a normally flat-sounding track into an enhanced 3D soundscape! Of course, his choice in content is the foundation for the album's greatness (in my opinion). My favorite track is Jim Rivers "I Go Deep." When I listen to this track, I feel like I am having a deep, spiritual (personal) experience with my inner self. I actually cried as I was driving home late one night as this track was mixed in. Overall, I have a passion for progressive house music that is funky and has soul. This definitely fits the bill! My mixes are free podcasts that I upload every month and can be heard at [...]. Hope you enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Ellegant Music.......2007-05-12

The music that this melodic cd contains it's very ellegant and unique, without loosing the ELECTRO style, because as we all know, electro it's changing the world of electronic music and it's the genre all people want to hear, so I must say A+.

5 out of 5 stars Fancy a game of chess?.......2007-03-22

The last several installments of Renaissance's "Master's Series" have shown a remarkable trend in "progressive" styles; Dave Seaman's electro-house production took long-time fans by surprise, and Sandy Rivera's Renaissance debut resembled Sharam's vocal-house that, when released by Renaissance, seems to come out of left field. Satoshi Tomiie continues forging the treacherous path towards dance music of the future with what is perhaps the most complex and engaging "Masters" release since Hernan Cattaneo's Volume 2; from the very beginning, Satoshi is dropping hints that this is no ordinary progressive mix and is a far cry from a return to the darker tribal trance that made NuBreed 006 the biggest success of his recent career. Satoshi utilizes instead a smooth, sensual and cerebral progression of excellent tracks that is quite unlike anything I have heard before - both from Satoshi himself and the EDM community as an entity.

On the first disc, Satoshi displays the type of mechanical precision found in car assembly lines; the product, however, is far less stable; what this really means is that the style is less predictable and therefore more exciting. "Farra" begins very slowly with xylophonic chords - giving the introduction to this disc a spacious atmosphere. As a result I always find myself in a complacent headspace that is soon shattered as the music unfolds. The feather-light sounds that weave over and under the melody effortlessly capture and calm the ear - until, that is, a wickedly cool and funky bass-driven groove gives "Air Moves" and "Don't Push It" the collective momentum needed to propel the first mix closer to its peak. The cool and delicate atmospheric consistency never gives way to anything too overpowering. Interrupting (and it is hardly a rude one!) the ambience is "Darkroomboot" by Opus Ink, an alias representing the collaborative efforts of Satoshi himself with the rapidly-rising European duo Audiofly. The tempo quickens, the melody gains definition, and the rest of the album explodes with a restrained energy that I found to be decadently suitable for cocktails and good conversation prior to entering thunderous dance floors. Arguably the sickest beat on the first mix appears in "So That's What Happens", which is surrounded by electro-robotic harmony. The beat is momentarily interrupted by silence, save the churning of electric turbines; it returns, seconds later, with the same latent ferocity as before. The timbre of DJ Yellow & King Britt's "Alienation 3/Beyond the Forest" reflects the track title so well. Haunting synths cascade over a cooler and slower foundation and remind me of the feeling one would experience if one were to gaze upwards in the center of an unknown forest, touched simultaneously by fear and spiritual awe. And how fitting it is that Jim Rivers' "I Go Deep" follows! Its deep and eclectic rhythm flows like water in a brook, slowly removing one's head from the forest and placing it, gently, back into the pre-club environment. "Praise" and "Aura" end the first disc with an upbeat, mid-tempo jazziness that is quite enjoyable.

Satoshi breaks disc two down immediately, hinting at the raw energy-to-come with the uniquely staccato "chopstick" percussion of Thugf*cker's "Ahh", later dropping into a hard bass drum. I will admit that I'm not crazy about the admittedly creepy male spoken-word vocals in "I Need", but they are quickly and quietly overlooked as the cowbell-driven pace of Matt O'Brien's increasingly popular "Serotone" kick in neatly alongside the first identifiably "dark" grooves of any track mixed on either disc. It would be wise to heed the title "Lose Control", because from this point onwards the aural journey becomes bumpier, wilder and more "Satoshi" than has been shown on the album thus far. I felt that the upbeat and bouncy atmosphere shoots like an arrow straight through the heart of the second disc. The next several tracks continue the cerebral-dance theme, and "Moods" drops a particularly body-moving rhythm that warrants mention. The peak of disc two is reached with a great pairing of tracks by Satoshi; in this case, D'Julz's "Flick It" (Original Mix) and Guy Gerber & Patrik K's "Sleeping in the Bass Box". I think the combination works perfectly; the smooth and respectable build up of "Flick It"s electro-energy erupts with a mean bass line that drives the melody as much as acting as a segue between "Flick It" and "Sleeping in the Bass Box". Take note of the latter title, because that's precisely the impression this track left me feeling I'd experienced. "Cropduster" and "Driven" polish off this fine piece of work, and end disc two with a far better fade-out than was given on disc one, where "Aura" seems to arbitrarily disappear.

The complexity of Satoshi Tomiie's latest (and, dare I say, greatest?) achievement is hard to swallow at first. Only after four sessions of listening to both discs straight through was I able to realize the insight Satoshi projects. I would have to say that this album is tied for my favorite amongst the "Masters" series with Cattaneo's Part 5. Satoshi Tomiie manages to create the most outstanding aural chess match I have ever heard - and although it is Satoshi who moves the pieces, it is the listener who ultimately wins the match.

The first CD on this set is on the money. But the second one is not really to my personal taste but it was still well worth the money.

I should have bought this 3 years ago!
Every tune is a winner, the music that masters at work listen to. Well put together and a true rare classic.

I was the mastering engineer alongside Herb Powers Jr. a well respected mastering engineer in the music business. If people have a problem with the mix cd they should go buy the vinyl and do their own mix.. It is available and sounds great. After all the original recordings were released on vinyl only, and I should know, I did the vinyl for the remastered versions.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Fair at Best.......2007-04-11

Although there are a number of decent tracks in this set, as a body or work it is not cohesive. The third CD is simply terrible, being only a pastiche of old seventies sounds.

5 out of 5 stars AS GOOD AS IT GETS.......2007-02-04

For the love of house-for the love of beats-for the love of dance....for anyone who ever wanted to explore house music for the first time-you have to buy this cd!This stays on constant rotation in my cd player-I also have one that i keep at work. Well worth the price. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars this is the truth.......2006-11-04

Masters at work always puts out products that you can count on them being good. But this one is outstanding. These three CD's have 46 tracks in total; and out of them there are probably six tracks that didn't realy speak to me and that was because I have them on other CD's that I've purchased resently.

4 out of 5 stars MaW.......2006-06-25

Disc1(Louie Vega) starts out strong and stays that way. Superb track selection/mixing. Disc2(Kenny Dope) starts out good as well. Track3 is especially catchy. Once again the mixing is seamless throughout. Kenny Dope's mix becomes a little too "diva house" towards the end for my tastes. So I guess I prefer Louie Vega's mix. Still well worth the money though. I would purchase this set again in a heartbeat. Much better than their ItH release.

3 out of 5 stars MAW Can Do No Wrong!.......2006-04-25

What can I say about this team that hasn't already been said? The combination of music they mix is mind-blowing! You can never go wrong with this duo-- they will move you like no other!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Second time around is a charm .......2007-01-04

OK! This volume isn't as tight as the first one but it's every bit as
enjoyable. There are grand moments on volume 2 that can stand among the best moments on Volume one. "Hit and Run" is the centerpeice of the set where Loaetta Halloway booming vocals tear through 11 minutes of a funky guitar driven groove. "Love for the sake of love" is a great slow burner (which is also the DNA for Montell Jordan's hit "Get it on Tonight"). "Nice and Nasty" is one of sleaziest dance songs ever recorded. Even if the lyrics are somewhat tame compared to what Rick James and Prince put out a few years later, the sexy melody and its even sexier beat is enough to get couples juiced up on the dance floor.

That being said there are some less than great moments on this disc. "Everyman" has a tight philly groove, but its bogged down by its overbearingly preachy lyrics on manhood. "A night to Remember" and "Janice" might be a bit too zippy for some (especially those who prefer a slower pace where the strings and basslines can really thrive in the songs). With 18 long tracks across 2 dics, those inferior tracks are easy to ignore.

Hey I can't give it all away. You gotta buy this album if you're a serious fan of dance.

5 out of 5 stars Free love and soul! .......2006-11-18

Thought disco music was full of cheese and watered down repetition, this anthology will change your mind. People give props to the Saturday Night Fever sountrack and Chic for creating the best disco music. While their music was successful from a commercial and at times a creative standpoint, it doesn't sum up the whole story of the genre. If the Bee Gees and Chic had the mainstream on lock, Salsoul records is the other side of the coin. Their music ruled the underground disco scene. Even though their songs frequently had the sleek gloss of their commercial counterparts, their music often had a tough edge because the beats thumped extra hard- and the rhythms were deeply ehanced to its maximum volume to put dancers in a trance while they're listening to the songs (listen to Ten Percent and Dancin and Prancin to know what I'm talking about).

The strings and synthesizers are extra loud. Those elements may sound overblowned and bland in the hands of unimaginative musicians, the musicians at Salsoul were innovative enough to give the music that visceral punch that was often missing from the commercial artists.

Unlike New Jack Swing and dance pop of the 80's, this music holds up well and deserve to be any serious music collection.

5 out of 5 stars All In Their Original Full Length Version!!!.......2005-04-15

Every one of these tracks is an absolute gem. All in their original versions!!! And now I've got Volume 2. And who the h*** cares if there's a 2 second delay between 'em. Duh!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars UnMixed Collection = Unhappy Customer.......2004-08-19

Though the tracks on this CD are fine, I was not happy with the product. Each track has a 2-second delay in between... so the music does not seque into each other. Not at all what I was expecting.

5 out of 5 stars Music you should be listening to.......2004-03-28

I absolutely love this collection!!! I was familiar with almost all of the songs included, but I wanted to get a compilation that has all of these in one place. This is an unmixed compilation. There are nine songs on each disc. Almost all of them are full-length. Some are 4 to 5 minutes long. While others are 6 to 10 minutes. Also, there is a good set of liner notes with more info about the songs. In the UK, the label has reissued the 18 songs included in the collection on 12" vinyl. More are on the way.

Many of these songs might be familiar if you are into neo-disco, and house music. I'll mention some of my favorites. Loleatta Holloway's "Dreamin" is here in the Norman Harris/Carl Parulo Mix. Some of you might remember the Satoshi Tomiie remixes that came out of this track. This is quite similar to that one. Carol Williams' "Love Is You", is a perfect piece of classic disco. By the way, this song is the basis for Spiller's international smash "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)". This song should have had more success. The highlight of this collection is Loleatta Holloway's "Love Sensation." This is one of the most successful tracks on the Salsoul label. Loleatta's voice is simply amazing! This song has been the basis of countless club hits. "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark, "Ride On Time" by Black Box, and 'you Got Me Burning Up" by Cevin Fisher are just some of the songs that have used this monster vocal. Just for this song, the collection is worth it. Also, there is "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Inner Life. This is the same song that Diana Ross did too. This is one of the first versions of the song. This is also the best one.

All in all, this collection is worth every cent. Bring out the polyester clothes, the mirrorball, and those platform shoes! This collection brings the disco era into your home.

    It's a must-have for everybody!

    Can't wait for volumes 2, 3, and 4!!

    Every home should have one.

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting artists not on most other compilations.......2000-10-05

Great compilation at a great price. This CD contains a variety of mostly south and southwest players not found on many other blues piano compilations. The variations in Texas blues piano styles (Robert Shaw - Santa Fe and Thunder Smith - Dallas) were suprizing. I liked some the artists so much I have purchased five of the CD's represented on this release. Whistlin' Alex Moore and Mercy Dee (Walton) are two of the jewels found here. Both are great players and amazing storytellers. One thing to note about the CD: some better known piano men are here as featured players on another artists tracks (tracks 4, 8, 9, 15). But it is not just all men, the great Katie Webster plays a dynamic boogie. I've rated this CD at four stars and strongly recommend it.
