2 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great.......2005-08-02

As is typical with these compilation cds, one recieves the shorter version of most songs when it is the unedited versions that became the hits;ergo, we "Can't Get Enough".

5 out of 5 stars One of the Defining Sounds of the 70s.......2002-04-07

This economical CD contains 1 of the definative R&B 70's tunes in "Cant Get Enough of Your Love" and perhaps the best disco song ever written in "Love's Theme". It also contains 2 excellent cover versions of "Just the Way You Are" and "Standing In the Shadows of Love". White was a triple threat - writer, singer and arranger/producer and shows off his talents here.
Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars I feel like dancing.......2001-07-16

Barry's music make's me want to dance, 30 year ago I watched him and love unlimited Live at Madison Square Garden and the magic is still there. His music is about Love and Feeling glad to be alive. Barry and Love Unlimited you Rule!

5 out of 5 stars I Finally Know.......2000-05-24

Since the early 70's, I remember Love's Theme but did not know the composer or the even the orchestration. Radio stations often use it as bumper music but rarely announce the title. Love's Theme was used as an intro to TV golf tournaments, but I still did not know title or composer. Finally last week a local talk show host used it as background in a discussion of Barry White. Bingo. I am no longer driven crazy not knowing where to find the music. I've listened to the entire CD compilation. Barry White truly is a musical genious. Amazon.com saved me a lot of time looking for Back to Back.

5 out of 5 stars Very Essential.......2000-04-27

Barry White is A Great Genius. This Disc Reflects His Greatness as a Writer,Musician,Producer,Arranger,&Vocalist.A Must Have.

2 out of 5 stars Cheap compilation.......2006-02-09

I found this in the bargain bin once. I wouldn't have gotten "(What) In the Name of Love" without it. I later bought more. As far as chart success, the two groups couldn't be more opposite. Spandau Ballet had struck "Gold" several times in the UK, but in the US, they're stuck as "True" one-hit wonders. Naked Eyes on the other hand, have had a handful of Top 40 hits here, but in the old country, the only one to chart there was "Always Something There to Remind Me" at a paltry #59. Now it's starting to sound like a Yakiv Smirnoff sketch!

5 out of 5 stars Naked Eyes complete Top 40 Hits.......2005-03-15

This CD put out by EMI-Capital Special Markets finally provided the distinictive Naked Eyes greatest hits compilation I had been looking for. All four of the duo's Billboard Hot 100 chart entries (which also all reached the Top 40) are included here. I already owned a Spandau Ballet greatest hits collection, but the inclusion of the Spand's hit songs is preferable to padding out a Naked Eyes greatest hits collection with songs that were not hits. These 2 artists songs go great "Back 2 Back" as all the songs are from the same era (The 2nd British Invasion of 83-84).

What would have made this CD perfect would have been the inclusion of Spandau Ballet's "Gold" in place of "Round and Round". Then this set would have included the 4 Naked Eyes songs to reach the Hot 100 and the 4 Spandau Ballet songs to reach the Hot 100.

As with all of the CD's in the "Back 2 Back Hits" series, there are no liner notes. But at a price of $6.98, you really can't complain.

3 out of 5 stars 80s Pop Darlings.......2001-06-18

In the 80s, Naked Eyes and Spandau Ballet were two of the biggest bands in the nouveau British music invasion. This album is really more of an introduction to their music than anything. This really isn't a good CD for long-term fans of either group; there's nothing new to find here. But it is a fantastic collection of their greatest songs and makes the listener want to rush out and buy the rest of their catalogues. On the Naked Eyes half, the best bets are Promises, Promises and Emotion in Motion, the former of which is probably their biggest hit on flashback radio today (excepting, of course, Always Something There...). On the flip side, the obligatory True is included on the Spandau half, but the best track is the last track, Lifeline. All in all, this is a good, solid compilation for those new to the work of these artists, and I'd highly recommend it.

Two of The Greatest Female Singers who ever lived on one CD. The album includes some Greatest Hits from both artists. As for Vicki Carr, you'll find some 'hard to find' tracks on this album, while the Shirley Bassey songs are often available on other compilations.

It is very strange but "Help Me Make It Trough The Night" by Vikki Carr is from her Columbia tenure not EMI. But I am not complaining as any reissue of Vikki Carr's English songs is very welcome indeed. However it is a pity that Dame Shirley Bassey's songs here are all redundant as they are all available on many many compilations. But BUY this CD for the Vikki Carr songs!

I found this cd packed with classic megadeth hits.I was stoked to get this cd so quickly.I highly recommend this cd for any hard core megadeth fan.4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Its good. .......2007-02-09

I picked this up a month ago. Its been in heavy rotation in my CD player since. Its a good CD. there are many other selections I would have liked to see on here...but thats just me. Overall its a solid CD for anybody who wants to see what Megadeth has to offer.
      Definately worth a purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Classic trash metal. Underrated.......2007-01-25

As everyone who likes megadeth knows, Dave Mustaine used to be a member of Metallica, but was kicked out for drinking. To get revenge, he formed his own band./ This band proved that Metallica wasn't the only one who couyld make kick ___ trash metal. They stand among the best in trash metal, along with Metallica, SLayer, Sepultura (Cavalera era, everything besides Roots), Pantera, and Kreator.

This is classic headbanging music. THere's so many sweet tracks on this, from Syphony of Destruction, Peace Sells, and the super fast version of the four horseman, Mechanix. Dave Mustaine can kick Kirk hammet and guitaring anyday (Kirk however, is still a great guitarist, and I think he's better than Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, basically because his solos sound more musical than SLayer's does, and more varied). Yeah, the vocals aren't as good as Slayer's of Sepultura, but Mustaine has a cool voice. ANd you donb't need to grow long hair to enjoy this album. Get this album today, they are a great introduction to metal.

3 out of 5 stars Go back to the starting line..........2006-10-31

First of all, I do love Megadeth. I saw them in '05 on Gigantour, and they were fantastic. Having said that, I don't know how much more could have been wrong with this compilation. The fans got to choose the songs, and you can tell; it's pretty much the exact same crop of songs you'd expect to see..."Symphony of Destruction", "Holy Wars...", "Hangar 18", "A Tout Le Monde", "Trust", "In my Darkest Hour", etc. I like all of those songs, but give me a break. Nothing is here from "The System Has Failed", even though it had just come out not even a year before this, and I know I remember seeing "Kick the Chair" on an early tracklisting. I would have hoped for "Die Dead Enough", personally. Nothing is here from The World Needs A Hero either, as "Dread..." and "Kill the King" were both on Capitol Punishment. I would have liked to see "Disconnect" or "Promises" on here instead. Or take off either "Dread.." or "Kill the King", and replace it with something specific to 'The World Needs A Hero'. And wasn't this supposed to be in reverse-chronological order, hence the sub-title, 'Back to the Start'? Instead, "Mechanix" is up towards the middle, "Holy Wars..." is first, and "Prince of Darkness is last. I wish Dave Mustaine would focus on making a good and worthy product, instead of just giving into whatever management wants him to do. If you ever read any of his interviews, nothing is his fault; there is always someone else to blame. I'm sure, in time, we'll be reading about who is to blame for this hodge-podge collection; probably the fans who chose the songs. While the idea is nice, fans cannot pick your tracklist for you. You can't incorporate everyone's in-put, as I see the majority of the songs I voted for, are not included. Greatest Hits, or Best Of's, should be left until the artist/band has retired, so the whole catalogue can be used, instead of having these collections rendered obsolete with each new album. I will say it is nice to have "Angry Again" here, as 'Hidden Treasures' is out of print.

4 out of 5 stars Good compilation with one of the best metal songs ever.......2006-10-02

I only bought this cd because I was aware of the rivalry between this
band's fans and fans of Metallica. So, basically I just bought this
album on spec-bit of a punt buying it.

It hasn't been wasted money, as there are about a handful of songs I
quite like on this album. I'd give this album about 3 1/2 stars out of
      five.

Having checked out Metallica due to the passion of their fans, I'm
actually surprised that both these bands aren't scary. I mean, you'd
think that heavy metal groups would have scary lyrics concerning doing
evil or what have you. It's not the case.

Anyway, as for this compilation, which includes a DVD of a live
performance, amongst other things, I'd say this:

      * I can't say whether this is the best possible compilation for this
band, as I have never listened to anything of theirs apart from this.
However, having seen listed "Anarchy in the UK", I think [or maybe it is
God Save the Queen], by the Sex Pistols, I must say I wish that that
song was included, just to see how a heavy metal band dealt with
covering this all time classic song by an iconic punk band.
[Recently heard their version-good, but not good as good as the original.
Still should have been included in this Megadeth compilation though.]

      * I initially found Dave Mustaine's singing to be like a muppet singing,
in that he seems to have a character voice when singing instead of his
      own.

Here are the songs that I rate really highly on this album:

Track 5-Angry Again: Nice rhythym and groove to this song. Has a good
riff, poetic lyrical structure and a nice melody.

#6-A tout le Monde: A song about suicide. Nice, slow intro with a steel
string guitar, I think. Good melody. The song seems to be premised on a
dead guy singing...a la the concept in a film such as American Beauty.
This is a really good song, but it is lyrically weaker, especially when
compared to Metallica's song "Fade to black" which deals with the same
subject matter. Metallica's song is more mature. In fact, since Megadeth
song has parts of this song in French, I thought that having it entirely
in French could mask the lyrically weakness of this song.

8-Kill the King: Good skipping guitar riff and drums. Good, simple
chorus. The melody is good too, prior to the chorus.

9-Symphony of destruction: has an orchestral introduction. Good riff and
beat. Not a bad chorus and melody, even though it is slightly odd.

13-Hangar 18: another goodish song, again, with an odd melody. Strange
subject matter though-it's real X-Files territory re the existence of
space aliens being kept from us.

17-Prince of Darkness: the out and out classic on this album. Very
atmospheric and all the elements of metal really gell well in this song.
Great riffs and drumming sounds. Of the small amount of metal music that
I have heard, this track is the most Beatle-esque. I.e. the sounds in it
are created in the studio for effect...wind, and rain, I think. Creaking
coffins too, maybe. Terrific atmosphere and by God, the bit after the
intro where the lead singer Dave Mustaine/Satan gasps for
breath is just brilliant...I mean the whole build up to that bit...the quietness,
followed by the more urgent music [actually, on reflection, the gasping for
breath is actually meant to be that of a dying man, BUT, rest assured, the
song DOES have Mustaine doing Demonic grunts in the song]. Be warned
though, that the live version on this compilation sucks...the intro on the cd
is brilliant, and you lose pretty much all of that live. Really poor.

These are the best songs on the compilation, I think. There are other
tracks which good elements to them, or amusing or interesting premises
behind them. E.g. Dread has a scenario similar to Pascal's Wager-i.e.
waying a life of crime against possible eternal consequences.

Wake up Dead has an amusing line about a guy coming home late, and if he
wakes up his girlfriend, he'll be dead.

I also noticed that Train of Consequences features a guitar sound not
unlike the one The Bee Gees used on Jive Talkin' [I think]. Also, the
song Trust has a bass line, I think, reminiscent of U2's New Year's Day.
That song is about finding it hard to trust women.

I'll give my 5 cents on the whole Metallica v Megadeth 'debate' here
too: I think Metallica has a handful of great songs, but not really too
much good stuf apart from those handful of songs [n.b. having listened
to Reload recently, this album makes up for Metallica's previous lack
of good songs that didn't quite reach their heights of their best songs.
See my review of this album here].

Megadeth, on the other hand, have a handful of good/really good songs.
It's unusual, in the case of Metallica, I think, to have a few great
songs and nothing much of note after that.

Megadeth has a song equal to anything Metallica have recorded in Prince
      of Darkness.

If one band had recorded the Metallica songs I consider great, and the
Megadeth songs I consider good, I think that would have made them one of
the top 10 bands of all time.

There are other songs on this Megadeth album which have some ok riffs or
melodies, but I think the ones I have highlighted are easily the best
      songs on this album.

P.S. I've also reviewed cds by Metallica at this site:

      Reload
      Load
      Master of puppets
      and Ride the lightning

as well as Iron Maiden's "Ed Hunter" cd and a Black Sabbath compilation.

P.P.S. Here are some songs I consider to be classics of the metal genre:

      Metallica: Fade to black

      Megadeth: Prince of darkness

Iron Maiden: Run to the hills [though it doesn't have the quality of the other two
in terms of me being willing to listen to it over and over and over again in a short
      period of time]

5 out of 5 stars Smart concept to put two popular rappers on one CD!.......2004-05-30

When I saw this in 1997, I went "Long overdue!" They are the true reasons why rap albums spent 37 weeks at Number One on the Billboard 200 in 1990 and 1991! They were two different artists to me, even though they wore nearly the same kinds of glittery outfits. MC Hammer's songs concentrated on repetition and addictive hooks, while Vanilla Ice focuses more on his rap style riding over very catchy but daring dance tracks! But there is more an emphasis toward hip-hop than the pop labels given to them. They are surprisingly street too! This album has a lot of energy on most of it--it will have you dancing for days!!!! Along with Run-DMC and other artists before them, they helped rap become huge during the '90s. Even though their later albums never matched their most successful ones, they are still classic artists to me! The last Hammer song weaves very well into the first Ice song on this album. They were two of Capitol-EMI's most successful artists at the time, and it was smart for Capitol-EMI Special Markets to release this. I hope that each of them consider making another album like that and have everybody dancing again. They were really at the top of their games with their music.

5 out of 5 stars Life is worth living... now........2004-03-14

This CD is an amalgam, a confluence if you will, of two radically different artists audio masterpieces. As everyone knows, "rap" music was invented in 1990 by Master of Ceremonies Hammer (or "MC Hammer", as he was known on the streets). The Hammer had tired of the drivel that emanated from the speakers whenever he turned the radio on. Hammer decided it was time, no... "Hammer Time", to make an album of music that would cause no less than a paradigm shift in the world's pop music scene. His Piece d' Resistance, "(yo)U can't touch this", garnered nationwide critical praise. The song was an infusion of street beats and quirky synths, and rife with Hammer's patented brand of bragadoccio and swagger. Perhaps Hammer's most stunning artistic achievement, "Have You Seen Her", is a tender ballad which showcased crisp beats and complex contrapuntal textures. As Hammer is also a high ranking member of Mensa, it surprised no one to hear such insightful and witty lyrics as "The girl is hard to see, like an unseen DJ". But Hammer knows that the formula for Success has a very important variable: God. With the release of "Pray", Hammer lets you know that he doesn't just have a closet full of baggy pants and a trophy case full of music awards... he also has a Bible. Well, as if having a disc full of Hammer's Sonic mastery weren't enough, included are tracks by his Protege, Vanilla Ice. Vanilla Ice began writing music under Hammer's auspices, and soon the student overtook the teacher. Vanilla literally turned the music industry on its head with "Ice Ice Baby", an obvious metaphor for the cold and unrelenting misery that everyone feels as they come to the painful realization that we are truly alone in this world. Vanilla also had impressive production skills, as is evident on his masterpiece "Dancin". The fast, schizophrenic editing and choppy beats have influenced such artists as Aphex Twin and Conway Twitty. Do yourself a favor, and purchase this CD as soon as possible. You will improve your quality of life by tenfold.

      5 out of 5 stars A perfect collaboration.......2004-03-12

MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice is two rap legends, and without them, I don't think that rap music would be such a big deal. "Ice Ice Baby" is fantastic, but "U can't touch this" is the greatest number of them all. It's hard to sit still when you hear it, your feet wants to dance. its a fantastic CD to a fantastic price, and when i saw it, i bought it right away....

        4 out of 5 stars A fun collection of 80s favorites.......2000-09-17

While these groups have pretty much faded into obscurity, this economy-priced collection of 80s tunes is a lot of fun.

The #1 Cutting Crew song "I Just Died In Your Arms" will bring back memories from '87; while the true 80s fan will also remember "I've Been In Love Before" and "One For The Mockingbird".

This collection also features the #1 song "Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz from '88, as well as the strong follow-ups "I Don't Want To Be A Hero" amd "Turn Back The Clock".

Fun memories at a great price.
