Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.

A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.

Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14

City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:

Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25

1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:

This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

Nat can do no wrong in whatever he sings - whether its a ballad or swing. Always a pleasure to listen to!

The Voice As An Instrument.......2005-09-20

This set is a great example of the perfect use of a voice as an instrument. Nat King Cole was already known for his velvet voice when he started to work with Nelson Riddle as an arranger. Like Sinatra, Riddle was able to perfectly compliment Coles voice, and add it to the melody as an instrument. This set is a prime example. Though the first set is more of Coles basic stuff, the second half is the star. Especially on "I Remember You ", You feel the melody and the precise blending of vocal and music. Highly recommended, remastered very well.

From the vaults of Capitol Records, brought to you on an import by EMI/Int'l with lush arrangements by David Cavanaugh and Ralph Carmichael from the early '60s with have "Tell Me All About Yourself" and "The Touch of Your Lips", another smooth ballad release featuring Nat "King" Cole...he had a tenderness in his voice, completely flawless...he could never deliver a bad tune...his style and signature of making a song his own has never been duplicated...within this twofer album are wonderful ballads complete with romantic lyrics...some are timeless and remain classics, while others are songs that have never seen the light of day....but this release is a dream come true...more selections from the greatest entertainer of our time!

Both are excellent, many are hard-to-find not well known...such as "TELL ME ALL ABOUT YOURSELF", "WHEN YOU WALKED BY", "DEDICATED TO YOU", "YOU ARE MY LOVE", "THIS IS ALWAYS", "MY LIFE" and "I WOULD DO ANTHYING FOR YOU"...more familiar songs among vocalist on this album are, "THE BEST THING FOR YOU", "CRAZY SHE CALLS ME", "FOR YOU", "I REMEMBER YOU", "POINCIANA", "SUNDAY, MONDAY OR ALWAYS", "THE TOUCH OF YOUR LIPS", "UNTIL THE REAL THING COMES ALONG", "YOU'RE MINE, YOU!"...an my favorite song on this twenty-four release is "A NIGHTINGALE SANG IN BERKELEY SQUARE", this tune completely reeks with romance and all it stands for, when it comes to interpretation and expertly performed, Nat is the master at his craft.

This collection is available on EMI/Capitol Import label...but the care that was taken is incredible...a must have for all the fans of this beloved man...they'll never be another pass this way again...thank you to the UK for this release of Nat "King" Cole and the songs that will remain with us always and forever...just the way we like 'em!

Why Nat is called KING!.......2000-09-13

Once again, Nat 'King' Cole has shown us just why he is THE KING. His baritone voice, which is rich and tempting like a Godiva chocolate, entrances the listener. TELL ME ALL ABOUT YOURSELF, from 1960, is the more upbeat of the two CDs, reminiscent of Billy May's work with Nat (JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS, LET'S FACE THE MUSIC), only the arranger and band orchestrator here is Dave Cavanagh. This is a real jazzy toe tapper that swings. My favorite tunes here are the cute "You've Got The Indian Sign On Me", "Until The Real Thing Comes Along" and "The Best Thing For You".

However, of the two Nat 'King' Cole CDs presented here, my favorite is THE TOUCH OF YOUR LIPS from 1961. Definitely in the class with LOVE IS THE THING and THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU...beautifully romantic. With lush orchestrations by long-time Cole collaborator Ralph Carmichael, you can just fall in love listening to this masterpiece. Outstanding cuts are the title song, "Funny (Not Much)", "Sunday, Monday, Or Always", composed by the men who were also writing for Sinatra, Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen; the hauntingly lovely "Poinciana", where in the beginning and end of the song, Nat's voice echoes, like he's far away, then right in front of you, then fades away again; "Not So Long Ago" and the wonderfully sweet "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square". Both of these CDs have wonderful material, and even though most of these songs are not as popular as Nat's hits, they are no less enchanting. Nathaniel Cole continues his awesome reign as KING, and CDs like these two are the reason. Pick this one up.

From Good to Great!.......2000-01-31

These two outings from 1960 and 61, prove what skill the great king had over a ballad. Even better, they are both remastered from the original stereo tapes this time, (something EMI failed to do with sincerely & the beautiful ballads). Also added, a chilling echo effect on "Touch of your Lips" not present on the original LP nor on American cuts from this album. Alomost sounds like Cole is singing to us from the great beyond! i would highly reccomend this album for any collection.

A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

The Best Gospel Album by a Classical Singer!.......2005-11-07

I am SO happy that this has finally been re-released onto CD! I have known this album for the last 10 years, as a friend of ours gave us a copy, first on cassette tape, which we wore out, and then on CD. I have played it for just about anyone who will sit still long enough to listen, and I count it among my favorite recordings of all time! I have other classical gospel recordings by some of Ms. Quivar's colleagues, and while I also enjoy them, they simply are not in the same league as this recording!

Florence Quivar is, quite simply, perfect in this recording. She has the perfect mix of classical and traditional gospel technique, and performs every song on this album with an astonishing range of colors, ability and with so much feeling that I am moved every time I listen. I am a classical singer myself, and this album is a true inspiration to me. It is a document of what singing really can be about, a magical fusion of sound, word, emotion and soul! I can recommend this for both the classical and the gospel enthusiast, but know many people, who really are neither, who just recognize and respond to the powerful, emotional, fantastic singing in this album!

Ron Raines does a fabulous job singing broadway songs. His voice is truly fantastic. He has a perfect voice for broadway songs and ballads. I think the song selection he chose is really wonderful and a great variety from different musicals. His first album was fantastic and so is this one. I'd highly recommend both albums. His voice is truly wonderful and a beautiful experience to listen to.

This is the second in Ron Raines series of Broadway Classics. It is just as beautiful as his first one. Close your eyes when you listen to him and you will believe that you are in a theater. You won't be disappointed if you like Broadway! The more I listen to Ron Raines sing, the better I like him. I hope he will make a new CD soon. He sings the songs that men sing in the original Broadway shows. It is great! This singer should be in everyone who likes music's collection

"an absolute joy" - Music and Musicians Hi-Fi News and Record Review Record of the Month The sixteenth-century madrigal was an Italian form. The term `madrigal' was loosely applied to a wide variety of music, but generally denoted a polyphonic setting for four or more voices of an amorous or pastoral text which was closely depicted in the music. Thomas Morely transplanted the form into England in the 1590s; this marked the beginning of the brief but brilliant flowering of the English madrigal. Between the 1590s and the early 1620s, twenty composers published a total of 36 books of madrigals, after which the form virtually disappeared. Some of these composers, such as Morely and Weelkes, followed the Italian model closely; others, such as Byrd and Gibbons, mostly stayed with the simpler English form of the consort song, where the tune remains in one voice, word-painting is not used, and strophic form is preferred to the continuous structure of the madrigal proper. Among the twenty-one items selected for this recording there are examples of several types of piece,! ranging from true Italianate madrigals such as Too much I once lamented, via more popular `balletts' such as Fyer, fyer!, to the simple part-songs like A little pretty bonny lass. The variety, imagination, and inspired blending of poetry and music characteristic of the best of the `English Madrigal School' afford a particular kind of delight in performance, shared equally by singer and listener

The BEST Gershwin/Porter album.......2004-02-11

Perhaps I'm romanticizing, but this was THE cd I listened to in high school. The arrangements are absolutely captivating; building new material over the original themes while referencing them so purely. I couldn't imagine a better use of your money than purchasing this album, it will bring you years of joy!

Glowing Coles of Porter..........2004-01-15

I can only comment on the Porter half of this recording, as I own it on original vinyl. It's a mono copy, but you wouldn't know it. As usual, excellent engineering from Mercury, who set standards in the early 60's that still count (IMHO) as best practice.

Frederick Fennell is right at home in the warmth of these beautifully wrought Ray Wright orchestrations. As he should be; Wright's day job was orchestrating for Radio City Music Hall. The sound is lush, the dynamics amazing, the performance spot on. It gets four stars only because I can't justify five, not having heard the Gershwin half.

I suppose that if you can't find a nice copy to play on a good turntable with a warm amplifier, then this CD would do - but then, you miss the excitement of hearing sound you've been taught can only come from a CD, magically floating straight up from ancient vinyl.
