5 out of 5 stars An incredible CD by one fine singer.......2007-08-07

Paul Potts has a beautiful voice that has been kissed by God. My wife and I congratulate him on his debut CD, and hope for many more throughout his career. One of the hallmarks of a good album is that when you listen to the tracks over and over again, it's like hearing them for the first time. That is the magical experience that we have with Paul Potts. His interpretation of the works, the feeling that is so evident on listening, comes through loud and clear. I personally couldn't care less about any perceived faults with this man which I certainly didn't hear. Bon Voyage with your singing career, Paul. You are a tremendous talent that we're all fortunate was found, and hopefully, one day, we will be able to listen to you live in America!

5 out of 5 stars One Chance Produces Limitless Pleasure.......2007-08-06

I purchased my copy of One Chance from AmazonUK because I could not wait for the American release. It was worth every penny! Paul won our hearts with his audition video because of his inspiring combination of courage, talent and passion. This CD shows that his voice has only improved since the competition. He chose the diverse range of songs because of the connection he felt with each, and he gives each a unique reading. His stirring voice inhabits the universe of each different song, making it a kind of mini-opera in itself. My favorites change with my mood and new hearings produce new insights, but Cavatina and Everybody Hurts continue to grab my heart. I can't wait for the next one!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album & A Great Voice.......2007-08-05

A great album and a great voice. I hope that he tours the USA soon!
Well done with Paul and the London Symphony on just a week's notice for a couple of days of recording in mid-June!

I am looking forward to the next album!

5 out of 5 stars Paul Potts CD "One Chance".......2007-08-05

I just loved Paul Pott's first cd. The music selection was wonderful. When I listened to the song "Cavatina" it made me cry. I first heard of Paul Potts ironically at the end of a news program. He was singing Nessun Dorma for the competition which he won. After hearing him sing it, I immediatly ordered the cd. I am so happy for him. He has a wonderful voice and is so humble about his success. I recommend this cd to anyone. I can't wait for his next cd.

A Fine Frenzy is actually just a fine young singer-songwriter from Seattle, born Alison Sudol. A self-taught piano player, on her debut album she pairs sweeping orchestral arrangements with dreamlike lyrics inspired by the classic works of fantasy writers like CS Lewis, EB White, and Lewis Carroll. Add to that a propensity for frilly shirts and cryptic song titles such as "The Minnow & the Trout" and you half-expect to find a back alley Joanna Newsom. Instead Sudol specializes in accessible pop epics, the kind of songs that fit perfectly over the end credits of a great Hollywood tearjerker. Despite the gentle melancholia that runs through "Ashes and Wine" and "You Picked Me," each tune arrives wrapped in an exuberant melody and topped by the singer's commanding voice. On the disc's standout moment, "Almost Lover," she shows she can do simplicity as well, musing over a sublime piano medley, "Shoulda known you'd bring me heartache/ Oh, most lovers always do." --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Deceptively good album........2007-08-07

At a glance, this album seems like it could be grouped with so many faceless popular bands out there. However, upon repeat listenings, the extremely personal and well-written lyrics and Alison's incredible voice place this group heads and shoulders above most. A Fine Frenzy has a long, fruitful career ahead of them.

5 out of 5 stars It's actually worth buying and listening too.......2007-08-06

Let me start off by saying that I don't usually find myself listening to most modern music, especially smaller acts. Most singer/songwriters of today just don't do it for me. Through a friend i was exposed to A fine Frenzy, and even though i had only heard a few songs and was skeptical about buying a whole album, i decided to give it a shot.

I don't know exactly what it is, but this album has that tiny little something that makes it stand above the endless sea of forgetable acts of it kind. I completely enjoyed this album from start to finish. I won't say i was blown away, moved to tears or anything, but it is genuinely good and enjoyable music, and at no point do i find myself bored or thinking "this is mostly a bunch of filler." I will definetely be looking forward to her next album.

I would definetely reccomend this album to pretty much anybody becasue its solid and easy to listen to without being boring. Alison Sudol's vocals are wonderful and the songs blend well together into something that is far greater than the sum of often simple parts. It's worth the small price tag.

5 out of 5 stars Fortune Walks in the Door.......2007-08-05

I first heard her on the radio playing just one song, "Almost Lover" on a local radio show that features visiting artists. I was hooked. Then the CD comes out and wow, I think fortune walked right in the door for my ears. Great lyrics, a beautiful voice and wonderful melodies. Just love this CD and am grateful that the producer she sent her music too understood what I heard that afternoon in the car and knew he was hearing something great.

5 out of 5 stars Background, Foreground, All Around Superb Sound!.......2007-08-04

I am not one to write reviews, but this CD leaves me almost breathless with each listen. Beautiful music and a kalidescope of sounds. The vocals are flawless and the musical arrangements are excellent. This is truly a work of art. Thank you for the gift.

5 out of 5 stars Her lyrics reflect her background.......2007-08-03

I'll keep this as short as I can. I first saw her on Vh1's "You Ought to Know" and I gave her album a try because I like her melodies and the she has an amazing voice. She's obviously very easy on the eyes but I think the music speaks for itself. Her lyrics are very well written and I'm very impressed with her songwriting abilities. Simply put, it's the best album that I've heard in a while if there is anyone who deserves a quick listen by people it's her.

Amazon.com essential recording

Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to the faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s. But beyond being a mere trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find critics who'll argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), it's also a Cliff's Notes take on a remarkable seven-year run of musical evolution, one that stretches from the neo-skiffle of "Love Me Do" through a remarkable synthesis of R&B, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley, gospel, country, and classical that still defies efforts to effectively deconstruct it. This is the pop monument equivalent of the '27 Yankees and '90s Bulls; it's every bit as obvious and dominating--and just as essential. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nothing to complain about in my opinion.......2007-08-04

I normally write long, progressive reviews, but considering who I'm reviewing, I'll make this short and sweet.
Different people will say different things about "1". Some will say it needs the more cult classics of songs such as "Strawberry Fields Forever", or "I Am The Walrus", but "1" reflects the more pop side of the Beatles. It shows how they dominated the American and English charts in their time. In addition, just the fact that they can put 27 songs on one disc makes me happy.
Opinions aside, this is the greatest rock and roll ever. What more can there be said? The Beatles = Timeless music. 1 = Five-star album for me. Thanks for the time, and peace.

John, Paul, George, and Ringo. If this phrase does not move you then you should go back to your George Michael videos and prey he'll become heterosexual! This is everything that you remember from the Beatles.

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-07-06

Beatles 1 is a good collection of the Beatles #1 hit singles. Perfect for the casual Beatles fan or for someone just being introduced to the Beatles music for the first time. If you are interested in hearing more Beatles music, collect their albums. Depending on your taste, you can get their early 60s stuff or their late 60s stuff or both time periods. Personally, I enjoy their early 60s stuff more than their late 60s stuff and have a collection of their early 60s albums.

What Operation Ivy is to the latter-day ska revival, Gogol Bordello is to the increasingly popular revival of Eastern European music. Blending gypsy rhythms with the intensity of alternative-rock, metal (and even rap), the group is justly renown for their charged live performances. The title track is a lovely mix of Balkan strings with pleasant screams from lead singer/ shouter Eugene Hutz. If only more of the songs followed its lead. As a whole, the album sounds like Leftie bumper stickers set to vaguely aggro "gypsy rock." "My Strange Uncles from Abroad" makes its political statement in a personal and affecting manner, but other tunes such as "Forces of Victory" are merely affected. It's hard not to agree with their world view or love for the woozy sounds of Eastern Europe. But on this album, GB make the Dead Kennedys seem subtle. And it would be nice if there were more variety to their sound. Perhaps they should collaborate with Beirut, Muzsikas, or Hawk and a Hacksaw next time? --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Gogol Bordello has been breaking down musical barriers since 1999 with a supercharged music based on a brutal gypsy two step rhythm that sounds like an Eastern European cousin of ska, augmented by punk, metal, rap, flamenco, roots reggae, Italian spaghetti western twang, dub, and other sounds generated by gypsies and rebels from across the globe. This is intense transglobal rebel rock, not light headed world fusion pop. It's about believing that music and art can transform negative energy to positive and inspire individual intelligence.

5 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM ROCKS!!!.......2007-07-23

This band is only getting better and better. Their melodies and instrumentation is really tightening up and I truly cannot get enough of this album! ...listen to it a few times and you won't be able to get the songs out of your head. THIS IS GREAT MUSIC PEOPLE!

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing........2007-07-10

As the Pogues once fused Irish folk with punk rock, so Gogol Bordello do the same with fiery Balkan gipsy music.
Although a formidable live presence, the New York band have been hit and miss on record.
Super Taranta! is a step forward. Roaring choruses are interspersed with manic violins, dub interludes and raucous polemics growled by luxuriantly moustachioed frontman Eugene Hutz.
"Gogol Bordello"'s red-blooded passion is refreshing, and they finally have another batch of boisterous singalongs to match it.
This 'gypsy punk' cacophony is all those times rolled into one.
Party on, dudes !

4 out of 5 stars Dancing Taranta.......2007-07-10

Gogol Bordello hit the big time with their last album of raucous gypsy-punk, which coincided with frontman Eugene Hutz's screen debut.

And they stick to their past sound in "Super Taranta!" -- a mad, frenetic ride splattered with heavy doses of Balkan folk music. Their sound and vibe don't shift too much in this one, but their energy and wildness hasn't failed them, or their kooky blend of gypsy and Pogues-style rock'n'roll.

"If we are here not to do/what you and I wanna do?/And go for rubber, crazy with it/why the hell we are livin' here? DAH!" Eugene Hutz calls out a capella...

... just before the music lapses into a swaying, colourful Balkan melody... which goes into fast-forward about halfway through. Hutz is roaring and growning about how "there were never any good old days/they are today, they are tomorrow!/It's a stupid thing to say" as the music revs around him.

It gets even more energetic in the wild festival sound of "Wonderlust King," and the driving bass-rocker "Zina Marina." With those done, they spin off into a series of energetic Balkan rockers: accordion pop, jibbering fiddlerock, darkly gleeful punk, wailing guitar laments, and what sounds like the theme song to a gypsy James Bond movie.

It has to be admitted, Gogol Bordello hasn't really changed their sound much. Not that stops it from being fun frenetic, colourful, slightly messy and very insane, without a shred of self-consciousness. It's a Jackson Pollock of Balkan noise.

But "Super Taranta" does adjust their sound a bit -- there's a bit more gypsy in their music, and a few bits less punk, with tighter melodies than before. We get a tangle of raging, twining guitar and bass (and Eliot Ferguson's solid drums) driving the melodies along, but often they're swathed in dancey fiddle and blaring accordion. It's a pretty wild ride, all around.

And Hutz provides practically all the singing himself, in a voice that always sounds like he's about to pop a vocal cord. Raw, rough, untamed. He growls, wails, howls, and roars out his political, party-hearty lyrics: "My strange uncles from beyond/I'll meet 'em on the cosmos street/and we will drink to how we told/to never trust a plastic beat!"

"Super Taranta" is the sort of music that gets your heart racing and adrenaline shooting. A raucous, wild party album for an East European festival.

As it turned out, Led Zeppelin's infamous 1969 debut album was indicative of the decade to come--one that, fittingly, this band helped define with its decadently exaggerated, bowdlerized blues-rock. In shrieker Robert Plant, ex-Yardbird Jimmy Page found a vocalist who could match his guitar pyrotechnics, and the band pounded out its music with swaggering ferocity and Richter-scale-worthy volume. Pumping up blues classics such as Otis Rush's "I Can't Quit You Baby" and Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Times" into near-cartoon parodies, the band also hinted at things to come with the manic "Communication Breakdown" and the lumbering set stopper "Dazed and Confused." --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE from 1968 that still holds extreme value!.......2007-07-31

They all clamber for the fourth album, the Zoso album, or they talk and they talk about this album or that album or yadda yadda yadda! Enough with the gibberish, the First album...this one, the self titled one, is the one to behold. Still phenomenal after all this time has passed...can you believe this album is nearly 40 years old? Just amazing, but what came after it is not what I am here to review, it is this album. Communication Breakdown bombs in and takes you for a pretty raw and fun ride! I won't go into detail but every song is a work of art when it comes to Rock and Roll. If you don't have this album you should, it is one of the best overall albums in Rock history next to the likes of Dark Side of the Moon and so on and so forth.

Jimmy Page is on guitar and with Plant at the mic, this thing was just the beginning...but even then it is such a superb album filled with soul, rock and roll, and metal. Long Live Led Zeppelin!

1 out of 5 stars Biggest ripoff in the history of music!.......2007-07-05

I understand I am about to anger many legions of Led Zeppelin fans. Unfortunately not all Zeppelin fans have done their homework as well as Page and Plant and company did for this album. Here they shamelessly steal from other artists' songs and put their names on them for songwriting credits!! Don't believe me? Well, here goes.

1) Good Times Bad Times-A great Zeppelin tune, hands down! Unfortunately it is the only one they truly wrote for this album.

2) Babe I'm Gonna leave You-Another great Zeppelin tune? Not quite. This is a dead ripoff of Joan Baez's version of an Ann Breden song of the same title. Check it out...same lyrics and music. How Zeppelin originally credited themselves for writing this song is despicable.

3) You Shook Me-A Credited Willie Dixon tune. However, if you listen to Jeff Beck's version on Truth, you will find shocking similarities.

4) Dazed and Confused- A Zeppelin warhorse if there ever was one. Too bad the song is a dead ripoff of Jake Holmes' song titled, of course, Dazed and Confused. Oh, it's just a title you say? Listen to Holmes' version and you will hear the same exact riff! When Page was with The Yardbirds, Holmes was an opening act and hence, Page's introduction to a song he would selfishly give himself credit for writing.

5) Your Time Is Gonna Come-Listen to the intro to this song and then listen to Traffic's Dear Mr. Fantasy and tell me if you don't see a similarity, or in fact, a carbon copy!

6) Black Mountain Side-This is laughable!! Bert Jansch wrote and performed a song titled..HAHA, Black Water Side. Interesting to note that the riffs are shockingly similar..And it makes me wonder...

7) Communication Breakdown-A rewrite of Eddie Cochran's Nervous Breakdown.

8) I Can't Quit You Baby-Another Willie Dixon cover which they appropriately give him credit for. A rarity on this release.

9) How Many More Times-What do you get when you combine a Howlin' Wolf cover of How Many More Years and Albert King's The Hunter? You get THIS song credited to Zeppelin as writers.

Don't believe me? If you can find the above mentioned songs I DARE you to play them back to back with the Zeppelin versions. Zeppelin proves, on this release anyway, that they were the greatest cover band in the history of music. I am sickened and disappointed. How sad that such great musicians can so obviously rip off other artists and not give them credit for these songs. Pathetic, actually.

Sadly, these are not the only songs in Zeppelin's catalogue that are partially or fully taken from other artists that Zeppelin shamelessy wears as their own. I also have references for Stairway to Heaven, Custard Pie, Whole Lotta Love, The Lemon Song, In My time Of Dying, When the Levee Breaks..etc..Yes, eventually Zep DID give SOME artists their just due...after being sued. You can argue and say Who Cares? These versions are great, and that may very well be. But the truth should be known and if you ARE going to listen to Zeppelin at least be aware of what has taken place. It's ok to cover someone else's song...IF YOU GIVE THEM PROPER CREDIT WITHOUT PASSING IT OFF AS YOUR OWN AND DECEIVING THE PUBLIC. As a music fan, I am insulted. Why do you think Zep sold all the rights to their songs to Atlantic Records? One word: Lawsuits!

These 'Gods' of rock are thieves and if you're serious about music and care anything about artistic integrity you should be at least a little bit angry at this deceitfulness. If you're not then either integrity means nothing to you OR you are as big a thief as Page and comp. were.

5 out of 5 stars Zeppelin's First.......2007-06-22

And in my opinion it is still the best.
Led Zeppelin I began the start of the world's most famous and most influential heavy bluesy folk rock band ever. Also Led Zep are cited as pioneers of heavy metal (although 1/3 of I's music was acoustic) just before Black Sabbath hit.
Advancing the sound of Cream, Led Zeppelin created a sound that was unique and one that was all their own back in 1969. Heck, Led Zeppelin advanced the boundaries of Rock 'n' Roll and inspired millions of others in their wake.
Besides The Beatles, Led Zeppelin was the first Rock band that I have ever heard and got into.
My Father used to shake the whole house while playing "Dazed and Confused" late at night, almost every night downstairs in our basement at that time. Slowly the song crept into my thoughts and introduced me to a whole "new" sound being only 9 or 10 years old.
I can still feel the vibrations under my feet from listening to that deep descending bassline that begans "Dazed and Confused". Still my favorite song on this, their debut.
"Good Times Bad Times" kicks this album off and early on in my childhood this was one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs. It's just really catchy and upbeat & contains a swirling guitar effect set by Jimmy Page(one of the greatest guitarists ever).
"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is still one of the most beautiful and most memeorable acoustic tracks that I have ever heard - "I Can hear it Calling me..." - The song was inspired by Joan Baez's song from 1962.
Other favorites of mine include : "Communication Breakdown" and "How Many More Times" - which in the early days was also Led Zep's (The Hammer Of the Gods) closing number during concert tours.
Led Zeppelin's First will always be one of my All-Time Favorite albums and it also holds one of my fondest childhood memories.

5 out of 5 stars classic blues rock.......2007-06-17

You know, I think by this point, Zeppelin's first album is now my favorite. The following four albums have been played quite frequently through the years (yes, even Zeppelin III). The original has been played just as much (I won't deny that) but there's something about the first album that just stays with me through the years.

Maybe it's the fact that the production is amazing for 1969 standards. Seriously, how many albums back then were this loud? Maybe Tommy from the Who. I can't think of many others. Black Sabbath's debut was released a year later, so that doesn't count.

Anyway, I really like what Zeppelin was doing here. You have fairly lengthy and successful attempts at blues rock, with extraordinary jamming skills scattered throughout the album. Zeppelin was just not the same after this one. I especially love the drumming and the creepy bass work. Great album.

4 out of 5 stars It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... Led Zeppelin.......2007-05-12

Led Zeppelin I (1969) Led Zeppelin's first studio album.

Out of the ashes of the Yardbird's came rock's most skilled - if not most important - guitarist of all time. Jimmy Page, joining forces with Plant, Jones, and Bonham, formed what would become the definitive hard rock band. Not only did Led Zeppelin help define a new genre of rock, they explored every possible point. This album was the jumping point.

Let's cut to the chase; it don't matter how these four geniuses came together, the important thing is that they did. The music here is very good, several of which are classic rock radio staples. The opener "Good Times, Bad Times" is a relatively soft introduction to what the rest of the album had in store. The slow blues of "Dazed and Confused" and manic rush of "Communication Breakdown" as well as the great instrumental "Black Mountain Side" help to create with a single stroke Zeppelin's distinctive sound.

I own the original vinyl from 1969, and this transfer is wonderful. But it's expected; Page is so darn protective of his (or their) music that he wouldn't settle for a remaster that didn't sound excellent. This is one of the greater albums of all time, yet is not the finest in the Zeppelin catalog. Anyone who is looking to get into Zeppelin should not start here, though; "IV" is the best place to go first, followed by "II" and "Physical Graffiti".

Loaded with lyrics about nightmares, pain, isolation and broken relationships, One X, the sophomore effort from Three Days Grace should be a downright bummer of a ride. Instead, the listener manages to find uplift lurking beneath the weighty lyrics as the quartet churns out a series of anthemic, crunch-chord songs. The band moves from arena-ready light metal with "It's All Over" to the sex groove of "Animal I Have Become," before plunging the listener into full-on chaotic heaviness during the anti-alienation anthem "Riot" and easing us into the atmospheric future hit "Get Out Alive." Throughout, TDG remains true to its core alt-metal sound. While that sound has been called unimaginative and unoriginal and at times does feel a little too familiar, the material on One X is never less than convincing and it packs a serious and stinging rock `n' roll punch track after track. --Jedd Beaudoin

5 out of 5 stars I love this new band.......2007-07-31

Well they have been around a while but they are new enough, who could not like this nice mix of musical tastes? It's all over, Never too late, and Riot are my favorites but I like them all. I wish I would have heard of this band sooner but now that I have I am really going to be listening to their other releases. This is good rock that does not assault the senses or hurt your ears. I hope this band stays together for a long time they seem to be different than a lot of the bands out there today, just kind of doing their own thing and not trying to sound like the band next door.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry Lyrics.......2007-07-06

The band is excellent. They are good musicians and play tightly together. The problem is the lyrics are awful. This is nothing less than nightmares set to music. If you have these same thoughts running through your head, seek some professional psychiatric help. Absolutely not recommended for young listeners. Parents you are warned. No wonder the record industry is on the ropes.

My Favorite CD
Three Days Grace is not only for one group of people. A lot of people I know and people I don't know love Three Days Grace.Rockers, punk, and the girls scream for them. I went to their concert when they came to buffalo and they were sweet. I never heard a band that sounded just as good live as they are on the CD.Here are some of there songs: Are You Ready, Pain, Never Too late, Just Like You, I Hate Everything About You, and tons more.
When I first listened to the CD I never stopped. In my opinion this CD is amazing and I can't wait until they make another one.I play the drums and when I heard the drummer I was BLOWN away.
I recommend this CD to everyone who is willing to listen to something new.You will be impressed,Even my mom loves them.

5 out of 5 stars One X.......2007-06-12

I like the CD One X by Three Days Grace. This CD has 12 songs on it. These songs are about 3 minutes long. Three Days Grace is a Canadian band. I like the songs Riot, One X and all the other song on the CD. There is some swearing in three of the songs. My opinion of this CD would be a 10 out of 10. I love this CD so much that I downloaded it on my I pod. I would recommend this CD to kids that are older than 12 because of the swearing. I would also recommend this CD to people that like rock music

Just when you thought the 21st century retro-R&B revolution was grinding to a sunken-hearted halt, Ryan Shaw comes along and revives the revivalist moment: This Is Ryan Shaw, the 26-year-old's phenomenal debut, dazzles not just because he can sing a song like Bobby Womack's "Lookin' for a Love" without letting the rear-view mirror leach him of his own soul, but because his originals--first single "Nobody," "We Got Love," and set closer "Over and Done"--convincingly replicate the classic sound of such forebears as Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and Wilson Pickett. Here's a man who can plead, please, and play out love-struck dramas with his voice as though the '60s never ended; if his sound borrows heavily, it pays back what it owes with genuine contributions to the genre. Shaw's is real R&B without the raunch--a return to uplift too self-respecting and sincere to land on the retread pile. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars This Is Real R&B.......2007-07-31

I met and performed in a wedding band with Ryan Shaw back in 2002 and I vividly remember being totally blown away by his powerfully soulful voice. I get called on a lot of gigs because my sound and style is reminiscent of the R&B of the 60's & 70's but this young man is the embodiment of all of the sweet soul and true raw grittiness of the genre. I saw him just this past Sunday morning on the Today Show and, he sounds even better than I remembered. To listen to him sing with that incredibly rangy voice and to experience the feelings he emotes in a song, takes you back to the days of when Rhythm and Blues was real & honest, not just a bunch of lecherous young bucks cussin' and pullin' at themselves. No, no. Ryan Shaw is real R&B like Sam Cooke, Solomon Burke, Jackie Wilson, Ray Charles & Wilson Pickett used to sing and you'd swear he's channeling all of them when you hear him sing. Ryan Shaw is real R&B that I can play for my children & grandchildren and say, this is real singing from the soul. GOD bless Ryan Shaw. I remember jokingly saying to him that he was going to take all the wedding date work from everybody and he replied that he wouldn't being doing that kind of work for long. I'm glad to see that he persued his dream and he's spreading true R&B so the world will know what it's really about.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-07-29

"This is Ryan Shaw"
album is pure gold.
This young man will go far in the music business.

5 out of 5 stars A real talent - great album, great live.......2007-07-25

I saw Ryan Shaw open for Buddy Guy in Ann Arbor. Most of the crowd probably did not know who he was before the concert, but he left to a standing ovation. (Buddy did great too - he's a legend and a must see).

Ryan is a great talent, singing with such soul. He sings with such range and seems comfortable in several different styles. Some songs remind me of Memphis Stax (in the sytles of Sam & Dave, Otis Redding) of 60's Motown (Do the 45, I Found a Love), some like Keb'Mo (We got love), and some have a little funk (Nobody).

Tell your friends. Buy the album. See him live. You won't be disappointed.

A great talent like his should be appreciated by the masses.

3 out of 5 stars Great Retro debut from really talented singer.......2007-07-12

Ryan Shaw has a great voice, a really great voice, similar to Terence Trent D'Arby without all his dramatic attitude and he sounds like he's actually having fun. He clearly loves the genre of old school R&B, Motown, and Soul and could hold his own among all but Otis, Stevie, Marvin, and James Brown. The majority of the songs however are too retro for my taste. They have that late fifties, early sixties simplicity that's full of energy but offer nothing you haven't heard before on a Time Life commercial for oldies compilations and the arrangements offer nothing new like Joss Stone's latest does.

That said, the songs "Nobody" and "We Got Love" are unbelievably good and worth the price of the disc alone. I've been playing them constantly. In another era they'd garner him instant stardom. They may even do that now.

5 out of 5 stars Whatever 'school' you put him in, Ryan Shaw's definitely head of the class.......2007-07-10

What a voice. The first time I heard "Nobody" I thought I was on an oldies station. Ryan Shaw can belt the lyrics out with more soul than I've heard in a long time. He does make me think of Sam Cooke or Otis Redding, but honestly--he's himself and that's way beyond fine with me.

Shaw clearly demonstrates the old adage of RESPECT as well. There's no explicit language or situations that would prevent an Old School grandparent from introducing the kids to this music.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Add 3121 to the mounting pile of evidence: Prince is the black Beck. He's a whole lot sexier, no doubt, but there's more to both musicians than image. All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third. Prince--looking ageless in videos for the first two singles, the controversy-courting "Black Sweat" and the sauna-steeped "Te Amo Corazon"--proves fearless as ever here, folding fat slabs of disco-funk into rock, heaping measured doses of hip-hop atop soul-tinted jazz supports, and slamming Latin rhythms against old-school R&B riffs. Nothing sounds as slinky-stylish-smart. And nobody delivers quite so deliciously, especially when what they're delivering is ultimately a madcap sonic mash. The usual hype surrounding a Prince release attended this one; over the long-term, expect a few standouts within a way worth-it set to emerge. They include the danceable "Love"; the gospel-lite falsetto feast "Satisfied"; and the summer-breezy "Beautiful, Loved & Blessed." --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Fantastically Funky.......2007-07-25

I absolutely love this album. More than a year after its release, I am still bumping to 3121. It is a splendid mix of funk and soul with enough rock to satiate the diverse musical palates that Prince's music attracts. There are so many standout songs on this album - some hit you like Bernard Hopkins jab right out the gate and others grow on you over time. My favorite tracks are the slinky Black Sweat, the romantic Te Amo Corazon with its beautiful string accompaniment, The Word - this song is just awesome, Get On the Boat - the bass and drums just do it for me on this one, the lovely ballad The Dance and the sexy ballad Incense and Candles, and Fury the solid rocker that I love to blast. All in all, you cannot go wrong with this one.

1 out of 5 stars Tammy La Gorce: Does Not Know What She's Talking About.......2007-07-24

I normally do not comment to other reviews, but Tammy La Grace's review was so bad and misguided that I was compelled. First. the fact that she calls prince a "black Beck." How insulting is that! Prince created several genre's of music before Beck was even out of grade school. Your comment that "All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third." Frankly, those statements are plain dumb and meaningless. Think about, "combining" weirdness and edginess makes prince a black beck. That's like saying Jimi Hendrix is the Black Jimmy Page because both where great guitarists and both pushed the boundaries of music--that's dumb. Again, your statement is insulting to the artist and fan base and you should reconsider your comparison.

5 out of 5 stars C'mon Do I REALLY need to Review this album?.......2007-07-04

c'mon do I REALLY need to review this album?? Prince is one of the rare artist who transcends time. Some artist made a name for themselves with covers of other peoples music and may have inspired people with a limited palate, but Prince has ALWAYS been doing his thing, NONSTOP! You know when you buy a Prince album, the only thing to expect is the unexpected. Do I really need to review this album? You're joking right? It's PRINCE for crying outloud. :0)

4 out of 5 stars Prince funkadelic album.......2007-06-29

I had bought this Prince album for my girlfriend, since she is a big Price fan. The only albums that I really love from Prince are "Purple Rain" and "1999" Know, I know that Prince had released some experimental albums, where he got more away from Rock/Funk and more into jazz, and those were OK. Some of his solo albums after Purple Rain, however, not so good. This is the best Prince release since Purple Rain. There are some great Funk songs on this album, and Prince seems like he is back with a vengence. There is some mild filler here, that makes it short from perfect, but still a great album. If you want Funk, this is the album to get.

Album Description

Best known to the entire world as The Catman, a founding member and original drummer of the legendary KISS, Peter Criss has returned with his latest musical project, ONE FOR ALL, a collection showcasing his far-ranging talent as a skillful singer-songwriter and his vast range as a gifted vocalist. Intensely personal and autobiographical, ONE FOR ALL, is a song cycle of variously styles, profoundly rich ballads that touch on all aspects of Peter's life, looking back at his legendary music career while also turning within to reflect on family and friends. It's the latest chapter in a life story that has given us one of rock's greatest legacies.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Producer required.......2007-08-07

A producer is an important though invisible member of any band. They are the ones that mold the songs. Peter should have used a producer to help him with his vision. Has anyone heard the original version of Hooligan before Eddie Kramer re-arranged it? It was a horrible country/western song. The finished version is one of my favorite songs on Love Gun. Any artist who doesn't think they need an outside person to arrange their music is taking a big risk as,unfortunately, Peter has done with this CD. Sorry Pete...I love 'ya but this CD is hard to listen to.

3 out of 5 stars Peter's most satisfyingly-realized musical offering.......2007-08-03

Lots of reviewers like to throw their credentials out there as they review this release, so I figured that's a good way to start as well:

1) I am as hard-core a Kiss fan as they come, having joined the ranks of the Kiss Army in 1976 upon the release of "Destroyer."

2) I am a professional musician, having earned a PhD in composition as well as being a percussionist.

There! Now that that's out of the way, my opinion shouldn't matter any more than anyone ELSE'S out there. Because ultimately, you'll decide on your own whether on not you think "One For All" is a worthwhile CD. As far as I'm concerned, I think this is a touching and honest release from Peter, perhaps the most codified collection of songs he's ever released. A few particulars:

1) Peter's singing: he's not all over the place in terms of intonation...far from it. I think Peter has a good ear, and his vocal performance is solid and heartfelt. Sometimes the timbre of Peter's voice is a little flat, without any of the interesting throatiness of Paul or the growling quality of Gene. And, much of the time he sings from his throat, which can make him sound strained in higher registers. But he really explores his low voice on the album, especially on the great Sondheim cover "Send in the Clowns." If you accuse Peter of being out of tune, you need to level the same accusation at singers from John Lennon to Janis Joplin.

2) Peter's drumming: I've never understood complaints about Peter's drumming, from other fans or from Gene. Look, if Pete needed someone to pound a cardboard box to keep him on-tempo during the recording of "Rock & Roll Over," then how could he play all those concerts WITHOUT that? I know that he deliberately sabotaged tempos during the "Dynasty" tour, but every time - EVERY. TIME. - I've heard him with Kiss, he's rock-solid. The same goes for his new CD, which is filled with interesting syncopations and creative beats that fit the songs so well...up to and including some tasty brush work. Is he Eric Singer, or Eric Carr? Nope. Why should he be? His sound is all "Peter Criss," and that's honesty at its finest.

3) Peter's producing: I really think ALL professional musicians should work with a producer...even Paul Stanley. An extra set of ears in the studio is just a good idea, in the same way that having someone else proofread a paper is a good idea. It's a different perspective, and how can that hurt? Having said that, I think the delicate sounds on this disc are well-conceived and clear. There are a few studio tricks - Pete's psychedelic vocals on "Space Ace," or the rain on "Whisper" - but otherwise the instruments are allowed to just sound like themselves. This is especially true of Pete's drums, which (thankfully!) lack the amplified trigger sound of recent Kiss releases and instead are tuneful and wooden; he also makes some great cymbal choices.

4) Pete's songwriting: to just read the lyric sheet, the songs seem a little trite, often something I find a particular weakness of Peter's. But he consistently works with Mike McLaughlin, and upon HEARING the lyrics within the structure of the songs, they are beautiful and honest. The arrangements are tight, and a few interesting harmonic choices pop up now & then to keep the music from falling into a 3-chord monotony.

If I had to compare this release to anything, it certainly wouldn't be Kiss. Kiss has always been a unique collection of four individuals, all of whom contribute to the sound of the band. Depending on the lineup and band effort, this has resulted in either some of the greatest rock & roll ever, or vapid verse/chorus anthems with musical inventiveness so insignificant it can't even be charted. Individually, each original member of Kiss does what he does best: Paul records sparkling pop rock and radio-friendly ballads, Ace delivers hard-driving rock with monster riffs, Gene goes all over the map with ballsy crunch and McCartney-esque triflings, and Peter...well, Peter lets his voice flow over smooth R&B with a little swing & rock thrown in for good measure. "One For All" sounds more like an Elvis Costello/Burt Bacharach collaboration, with perhaps a little late-60s Moody Blues/Procol Harum thrown in. I wish folks would detach Pete from his Catman persona and give this album a chance...just as I hope Kiss fans will understand that this music is Peter unencumbered by the rules and dictates of his former bandmates. He is stronger for it.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Peter Criss album...so far........2007-08-03

Good to see all the TRUE reviews finally comming in about Peters new CD. Looks like most those negative reviews were written almost by the same person who has hard feelings for Peter or something? Most of them quoting remarks made by Gene Simmons in his various interviews, books ect about the Catman. I think this is Peters best work yet and very heartfelt. Good to see Peter getting on with his career and hope theres much more to come. I give it 5 stars *****

5 out of 5 stars At last..........2007-08-02

I just listened to it. It's way better than his solo album of 1978. Like someone else said below, it's honest. And unlike some reviews here, I find the production tight and subtle. Yes, it is soft, but not too polished. Some of the guitar works and piano does really fit his voice. My favorites are "Doesn't get better than this", "Send in the clowns" and "Space Ace". Only "Hope" should've been left out of this album.

Lets be honest , Paul Stanley is ,was and forever will be the man in Kiss . Even Gene is but a bit player when it comes to talent in the legacy of Kiss as real writers because after the make-up years , he sucked . Ace and Peter both had moments of cool in the band , but when left to make a full album they would be left wanting. Although the first solo's by Ace and Peter were great (Ace) and good (Peter).
So what can I make of the Catmans newest piece . I could not even get through it. His voice cannot , I repeat handle a full album of slow numbers. It just is not that strong and the songwriting is at best , weak. There are two decent numbers here but that is it. Hopefully when he comes back with a rock album it will make up for this very poor outing.
