1 out of 5 stars Not a CD to add to your Johnny Lang Collection.......2006-07-01

I appreciate and like Johnny Lang's music. There is no doubt that he is amazing. However, this CD is awful. It does not demonstrate his true abilites and should have the "kid" still in the title. The CD is good if you want to complete your collection, but this CD is not one worth listening to twice. Save your money and wait for his next CD release.

5 out of 5 stars Jonny Lang .......2006-03-15

this kid is great. i have several of his cds and they all are great. this kid can sing. i listen to him at work, in the car and on my ipod.
this is good sounds, not hostil or booming. you can hear the words and understand what he sings. he as always has a good band backing him up.
i would buy this again should something happen to the cd that i have now.

5 out of 5 stars A solid, rocking blues cd.......2005-08-10

I recommend this cd to anyone who likes Jonny Lang and his brand of music. This was his first cd and a brilliant entrance into the world of music. The boy is a very talented writer and musician.

5 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT.......2004-08-12

For 14 yrs old at this time I can't believe how great this cd is. You can still hear the kid in his voice, but it is just amazing how really great he is. I love it. Every single song is great.............................sbaby

5 out of 5 stars Great early release.......2003-12-07

Very bluesy - slower than his later releases. Hopefully he will come back to this style as he matures and after he's done experimenting with other sounds.

An absolute must have for the completion of your personal smoker esthetic. A mood-setter, background music, dance lube--you name it, this compilation provides it. Rita Marley's track takes me back to the early days, driving around to get out of the house and listen to "One Draw" with the C-130s.

4 out of 5 stars Great Memories !!!.......2004-05-26

My Beloved Andrew use to listen to this CD back in 1994. I miss him so much! I couldn't find it nowhere and was glad it was found here! I use to cook some great curry chicken and ox tails while he played this cd and my dream was to visit Jamaica and learn his culture (I'am Puerto Rican). My favorite song is "One Draw" by Rita Marley. Forever R.I.P. Andrew 4/20/72 * 9/11/01

Some of my favorites are: "Under Mi Sleng Teng Remix" by Wayne Smith with the crew from Cypress Hill, "Jamaican Weed" by Lone Ranger, "One Draw" by Rita Marley, "The Herb" by Tony Rebel, "Under Mi Sensi" by Barrinton Levy, and "Herbsman Hustling" by Sugar Minott.

5 out of 5 stars Jonny Lang - Early Independent Release That Is As Good If Not Better Than His Later More Well Known Stuff.......2007-08-03

Jonny Lang is a blues guitarist / vocalist who burst on to the scene in 1996 with his major label debut "Lie To Me". At the time Lang was only in his mid teens and became a blues sensation almost overnight. The album's title track even produced a top 40 single that had the kid playing large venues as a headliner and he was not even 18 yet.. What a lot of people who discovered Lang since that time do not realize is that prior to the "Lie To Me" album Lang had been a member of Ted Larson's Big Bang Band and had produced this excellent album "Smokin". Lang started taking guitar lessons at the age of 13 from Larson. Within 6 months the kid was outplaying the teacher. The kid also possessed an incredible blues voice that sounded years older than it actually was. Larson formed a band around Lang and recorded this album. Lang was only 14 at the time, but wrote or co-wrote 11 of the albums songs. Listening to this disc one would have no clue that this kid was as young as he was. The album is mostly up tempo blues with plenty of great guitar from both Lang and Larson (who is no slouch himself), and Lang's killer vocals over the top. Along with the originals the band do some great covers including Tab Benoit's "Nice And Warm", Robert Johnson's "Malted Milk" and Albert Collins "Too Tired". The album is a bit on the raw side compared to Langs more polished major label recordings that would come later, but I find it refreshing and honestly think that this early independent release ranks right up with the best stuff Lang has put out since. If you are a Lang fan and have never picked this one up, run out and get it.

5 out of 5 stars The beginning.......2003-06-11

I have several of Jonny Lang's CD's and enjoy them all but this one is an exciting begining to an even more exciting career. I got this CD when he appeared in my small town at the beginning of his career and saw him very recently too. Although he is more of a polished performer, this music is still blues at it's best...even if he would have been 30, 40 or 50, the soulful sound is there along with the fantastic guitar licks...I love it !!

5 out of 5 stars young gun.......2002-10-12

cd is from 1995 originally and the cd contains great electric blues ,the cd is mostly uptempo blues from the opening of louise to the great cover of albert collins "im tired" to my fav a great slow blues tune nice and warm with some of the best guitar licks i ever heard

5 out of 5 stars WHAT IT IS...................................2002-05-11

Chicago does not mean the blues, Memphis does not mean the blues
even Mississippi Delta does not mean the blues. The blues come from deep inside ones self and anyone, including a white teen guitar player from North Dakota, can play it. The man definitely has it in him and it is definitely comin' out.

5 out of 5 stars Most Chicagoan's Dig this Kid.......2001-12-04

OK. That last "Chicagoan" is not a good representation a true blues fan. I admit I don't have this CD, but I do have all of his others. Quite frankly this kid wails! I'm just hoping his voice holds up past puberty.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Sounding CD.......2005-06-26

One of the greatest successful pleasures of CD shopping, is to dig in the bargain box, and find a $1 album that sounds simply great! Gee, thank you, John Q Public... for not giving this band, better recognition.

Every track on this CD is catchy and well played. My only slight gripe, is the vocals have a Joe Cocker "croak" at times. (Although the lyrics are poetic and interesting to hear.) I gave them 5 stars anyway; it's just such a well-coordinated arrangement of songs.

There are shades of Deep Purple, Eddie Money, U2, and Cheap Trick and The Hooters in the sets. It's versatile and accessible music... more people should give it a chance!

5 out of 5 stars My little secret.......2003-03-05

This band is great... i heard it sold around 40,000 copies.I am one of the 40,000 lucky ones to find this band. They are even better live. I saw them blow away Creed in Albany,Ga. and many other times in the southeast. Best show i have ever seen The Hazies and Cowboy Mouth,at the Music Farm,S.C.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Band.......2003-03-02

This is just a fantastic CD. If you ever have an opportunity to see this band live...do it. They are fantastic. They put on a better show than any live band that I've ever seen. Buy this cd and tell a friend.

Warning: The drums at the beginning of the cd in the song "Trip Free Live" will increase your blood pressure and those with heart conditions please listen with caution. Those without heart conditions, crank it... trust me, the only disappointment you'll have is that this is the only CD for the Hazies currently available.

4 out of 5 stars Will Vinnie hit the big time?.......2001-06-10

First of all, let me say that this CD never really got the recognition it deserves. It is a great slab of hard rock, people! You all know the single, "Skin & Bones", which was way ahead of its' time (It was written in 1992, before all of the other stuff that sounded like it came out around '96 or '97), but there's alot more to them than that. There are good party songs like "Dancin' At Seven" and "#1 Slave", beautifully crafted songs like "Spin" and "Effedrin", and some just plain rockin' stuff like "Trip Free Life" and "I'm The One". The rest of it aint too bad either :)

Another thing...I just saw this band live in March of 2001, and it was one of the absolute best rock shows I have ever seen! There weren't many people there, but that didn't stop them from giving us 110%!

The last I heard they were signed with Egg Records, an indie label, and are still negotiating with a few major labels for their upcoming as-yet untitled release. I have pesronally heard most, if not all of the new songs, and they are just as good, if not better than the ones on display in Vinnie's big room. When they do get back on a major label, we can hopefully look for "Vinnie Smokin' In The Big Room" to be re-released as well.

If you can find this one, pick it up! You will not be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Great club band rocks the house.......2001-06-06

For being their first major label outing, this is a really great CD. Too bad that EMI folded just after getting this CD out.

          Product Description

Dan Neal's "When The Big Picture Fades" is a grown man's prayer, a survivor's song, a defiant shout, a dark roomful of melancholy and bitterness shot through rays of hope. With a backup band of crack L.A. session musicians including Lucinda Williams band, and with a voice influenced by Petty and Dylan, he sings of a love in ruins, a house aflame, sustaining himself with a resilience born of heartache. He seeks answers not from lovers, friends or shrinks but from the lessons of his own experience. Neal's songs are written from a place "somewhere between imagination and memory, between the person I was and the person I wanted to be." They ask adult questions, "Is this a career I'm building, or just a job punching my time?" "All the years of playing in safe, all the time was I a slave? What mattered?" And these songs come to adult conclusions--sometimes the only way to deal with a broken relationship is to walk away from it. Self-described (here he kids with Randy Newman-style humor) as being "from the low end of the gene pool," Dan Neal is clearly comfortable in his own skin, and not about to pull any punches when confronting love's disappointments. He tells one partner, "I've got my faults it's plain to see; ;you'd be better off if you were more like me." There's defiance here - "You don't know a thing about me," he accuses; "Don't question my faith," he demands - but this song collection is about coping, redemption and, ultimately, hope: "If a moth can turn into a butterfly, then things will get better till the day I die."
