Everything super-producer Dr. Dre touches turns into the platinum that Juvenile rocks in his grill; white gold, at minimum. Yet, interestingly, Man vs. Machine is an example of what happens when rap's finest talents go superstar collabo-hunting: the magic remains just where it started--on paper. Do Eminem's verbal jabs at Jermaine Dupri on "My Name" add anything to the Xzibit mix? Nope. And is that Dr. Dre producing the beats of a mere mortal on the Nate Dogg-assisted "Multiply"? Absolutely. Conceptually, "Release Date," a provocative first-person look at what goes through a prison inmate's mind just before being discharged, showcases what you'd come to expect from an Xzibit track: rugged beats, even nastier rhymes. However, the track's production by the much-fêted Rockwilder is an afterthought. So clearly, when the X-man sticks to his growling flows over purist beats by DJ Premier ("What a Mess"), or with the similarly gritty M.O.P. ("BK to LA"), the results are splendid. But with Dre and company on board, X seems to lose some of his focus and organic luster. Put in perspective, Xzibit's fourth release is arguably better than most of the West Coast pabulum out this year. However, considering all the star power assembled, this one falls short of expectations. --Dalton Higgins

X wins against the machine {4 and 1/2 stars}.......2006-11-16
Standout Tracks: RELEASE DATE, SYMPHONY IN X MAJOR, BREAK YOURSELF, HEART OF MAN, THE GAMBLER, HARDER, LOSIN YOUR MIND, BK TO LA(knockout collabo with MOP), MY NAME(X and Em take shots at Jermaine Dupri) and ENEMIES. Filler: Multiply(weak first single plus the remix with Busta Rhymes is better), Choke me spank me pull my hair(classic example of beatwasting), Right On. Standout Tracks on bonus disc: MY LIFE MY WORLD, WHAT A MESS(vintage X to the Z track produced by Premo) and HIT U WHERE IT HURTS. Bottom Line: Dre not executively producing this album was not a bad idea. X's fourth effort gives you X before he got commercialized by Dre. Even though he has some stupid tracks(Right on and Choke me, spank me pull my hair) he has enough solid jams(Break youself, Release date, Losin your mind, BK to LA, The gambler, enemies etc) to keep this one in close range next to your cd player. A definite step up from Restless.
Are we talking about the same cd here!!!???.......2006-05-30
How can anyone not enjoy this album, u guys must be Losin Your Mind. This is definately X's bext album. Every song is somethin new to discover. X is such a incredible rapper. The best songs on this album are Symphony In X Major feat. Dr. Dre, Multply feat. Nate Dogg, Heart Of A Man, Choke Me-Spank Me, Losin Your Mind feat. Snoop Dogg is just a sick song, doesnt get much realer than that, & My Name feat. Eminem & Nate Dogg, which is a classic also. This is a great cd from front to back. X keeps it real, and shows strongly here. Overall I give this album 5 bricketts.
X's worst album.......2006-04-05
This is Xzibit's worst album, which doesn't say much becouse X has yet to make a bad album. I been a fan since Paparazzi got dropped, and was amazed by the awesome lyrics so I bought the album, and have kept buying his album since. Me too I like Xzibit better before the Dre-days, back then he probably was number one alive in my book, now he's just great.
This album is mostly about making your head nod, BUT however the goal get's accomplished and it's highly enjoyable.
People are hating on rappers sampling Toto's Africa, BUT I have yet to hear a bad song using that sample, Xzibit, Nas even Ja Rule made great stuff using that beat, this is probably the best one about struggling to go from boy to man.
The tracklist on Amazon says 19 tracks, my copy only has 16 so this is probably a new version/limited version of the album then... ANYWAYS:
I pretty much like all the songs except for "pull my hair" and "multiply" is not too good neither, X brings out the old X in the great hard Enemies finishing off the album in a great way (again on my 16 track version)
If you call this a bad album: I'll call you a lyer...
Unacceptable...Even By His Standards.......2005-10-30
Is it just me, or has X been going downhill since 2000? I was really hoping that he would do a better job than his "Restless" LP, but I was proven wrong. The problem with this CD is the terrible beats and weak guest appearances.
When I heard "Symphony In X Major" (If you're a Brand Nubian fan, you'll quickly notice the revised title), and "Multiply", I thought that his CD was going to be exceptional. Unfortunately that became misleading, because they're the second and third track, and ironically they were the two lead singles of the CD. After that, it just goes downhill. "Heart Of Man" he tries to regain some momentum he had on previous albums, but it just doesn't come. "Harder" has to be the worst I've heard Ras Kass spit. "Choke Me, Spank Me (Pull My Hair)" has to be an alternate version of "F****n You Right" which appeared on the Restless LP, and you can tell by the title of the song what it means. "BK to LA" which features M.O.P. doesn't sound like a beat that they would do. I'm even dissapointed in Lil Fame and Billy Daze for doing that. I expected a DJ Primier beat or something better. "B**** A** N*****" which comedian Eddie Griffin sucks, because to me its a knock off of "Ed-Ucation" from the Dr. Dre's 2001 Album.
The CD is not all bad though. "My Name" would be considered to somewhat a sequel to "Don't Approach Me" which both featured Eminem. "The Gambler" featuring Anthony Hamilton is somewhat good. "Right On" would be a good track to some people.
There are a couple of points where it's the Xzibit I wanted to hear. The last song "Enemies" reminds me of how he was back on the 40 Dayz...album. The bonus disc would have 3 extra tracks, and one excellent track is the DJ Premier produced "What A Mess". If it was more of tracks like that on the origonal CD, there would be a different reaction, but why is the best song on the bonus disc will remain a question.
As you can see, this is not up to Xzibit's standards. Another thing that dissapointed me was there was not one member of the Likwit Family on this CD. I only recommend this CD if you want to hear somemore of Xzibit's work with Dr. Dre and what not. Otherwise, you should move on to "Weapons Of Mass Destruction" where he pulls himself back together.
Standout tracks: Symphony In X Major, Multiply, My Name, Enemies, What A Mess (Bonus Disc)

Nearly Flawless.......2003-02-17
Xzibit's latest release contains a variety of hip-hop beats, all of which are outstanding. Produced by Dre and Erick Sermon and featuring Dre, Nate Dawg, Snoop, Golden State Project, and Anthony Hamilton, well, enough said. Only a few songs on the entire CD are not great, but the rest are amazing. X brings rhymes as well as hard-hitting beats in all of the songs. Tracks 1,2,3,4,10,12,13,14,and 16 all must be heard
