Whether she has to put on a cowboy hat, kick it at the club, or cake on rock-chick quantities of black eyeliner, Kimberley Locke is going to see to it that you like her. Based on a True Story, the 2003 American Idol finalist's second CD, wanders through a dressing room of genres, wiggling into rock ("Trust Myself"), strutting around in R&B and dance ("Supawoman" and "Doin' It Tonite"), and unbuttoning contemporary country ("Fall"). Locke, an artist who otherwise exhibits a Queen Latifah-like gift for keeping it real, probably should have stuck to what fits best: pop (see the excellent first single "Changes"). That she doesn't--that she instead chooses to make an Idol-style show of her versatility--is a little bit of a letdown. But not much. Because she pumps personality and warmheartedness into every song, effectively if not ingeniously carrying off a boatload of styles, she'll still have a lock on a lot of mental lists of all-time-favorite female AI contestants, and deservedly. -Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Wearing her heart on her sleeve, Kimberley knows her fans will be able to relate to this album because music is the universal language. In her first attempts at songwriting, the product is a collection of songs highlighting the good and bad points of love and friendship. Taking calculated risks and exercising her faith has proven to be the key to unlocking the music that lives within Kimberley Locke.

Another great album.......2007-07-08
Another great album! This one has definitely grown on me...great voice and a nice variety of tunes. I just love her!
Based on a True REVIEW.......2007-06-28
Wow, great voice and songs. Amazing that she is not as hot as Kelly or Carrie.
Fairly Strong Sophomore Effort.......2007-06-26
One of the better singers to come out of the AMERICAN IDOL franchise, Kimberley Locke follows up 2004's ONE LOVE with a similar-sounding set of songs in BASED ON A TRUE STORY. As her previous set demonstrated, Locke is best served musically when wrapping her warm vocals around pop/rock arrangements--opening track "Change" is a wonderfullly adult rock ballad that never succumbs to sappy melodrama, while the country-tinged "Fall" and pop nugget "Any Which Way" showcase Locke's sublime vocal work. It's when trendy production creeps in that the album falters--official first single "Supawoman", justly ignored at radio, is abysmal, while "Doin It Tonite" sounds like a cheap Neptunes-produced knock-off. As a previous reviewer stated, it's a shame listeners(radio and otherwise) won't accept a black woman singing pop-rock music, which is probably why the album provides a little catering for the R&B audience. Nevertheless, if Locke had stuck to more songs along the lines of "Change" or "Fall", there would have been little, if anything, to fault about this set.
SUPERB!!!!.......2007-06-08
Kimberley Locke's second CD, "Based On A True Story," is perhaps the finest release to come from any former American Idol contestant to date. It is extremely good, with a nice variety of musical styles. Kimberley sings her heart out, and she has a simply wonderful vocal range. I loved her first release, yet this one is ten times better. I am a big fan of many American Idol alumni, including Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood... and I must say that Kimberley Locke outshines them all on this splendid release. Try it. It is well worth your money. GREAT CD!!!
This is not your typical American Idol Album!.......2007-06-02
First of all, I don't typically write reviews for albums, nor am I the typical AMerican Idol album buyer. However, if you are looking for a great album, with a great voice, great songs, and something to listen THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH, then buy this album.
If you like "8th world Wonder," you will love this album. Most songs are similar in sound as "8th," what I would call Adult Rock. Kimberly not only has a great voice, that is very powerful, she co-wrote most of the songs.
I can't pick a favorite, but I will give you a rundown of the tracks on this album:
1. Change - This is an amazing song, amazing voice. Most artists now when you listen to their vocals, there are several layers of their voice to make it stronger. She does not have that....her voice is that powerful.
2. Any Which way - Rock song with a great chorus and a soaring bridge at the end! It will get you going.
3. Trust Myself - again, another rock song. This one will have you believing in yourself. Again, awesome bridge at the end!
4. Supawoman - to be honest, when this song was released last year as a fast song, I didn't like it. However, this is a slowed down version and I have found myself addicted to it. Listen to the lyrics.
5. Doin' It tonight - a simple dance song. At first is seemed too simple, but I love her lower range in this song. You will start dancing when you hear it.
6. Friend Like You - DOn't be fooled by the title....this is not a happy song, however, she uses the Rock sound perfectly here. A great song.
7. Fall - This will bring tears to your eyes. Beautiful slow song with amazing, powerful vocals.
8. I don't wanna know - Again, the rock sound works so well for her. Good song.
9. Talk about us - this is more R&B than the rest of the album, but it is a nice change up.
10. You don't have to be strong - Blues song, very nicely done.
11. Everyday Angels - A feel good anthem! Nicely done
12. Band of Gold - WOW! She truly has a gift to make any song great!
This album is worth it. It's not like any other AI album. You will be listening to this album over and over. Let me know if you can pick just one favorite!

Dubbin' in NZ.......2007-06-27
Fat Freddy's Drop is one of a slew of talented New Zealand-based bands merging electronica, dub, reggae, and other styles into a particular Pacific Island sound. Joe Dukie (Dallas Tamaira) is one of the leaders of this treasure trove of sonic delights, which I discovered on a trip to the North Island a few years back. Also well worth checking out, but a bit hard to find are Salmonella Dub (gotta love that name), Rhian Sheehan, Black Seeds, and Trinity Roots, among others. "Based on a True Story" is laid back, funky, roots reggae that will leave you tapping your toes and groovin'... Most songs take some time to build momentum, unfortunate perhaps in today's "5 second" soundbite world, but rewarding to the patient listener. Standout tracks are Cay's Crays, Flashback, Ernie, Del Fuego, and the FFD classic Hope.
Real Reggae Funk n Dub.......2007-04-13
This is one of the most exicting albums I have discovered in the last couple of years because these guys have a very unique genre crossing sound from funk to reggae to dub to jazz. I love reggae but always feel starved of quality new product until Based On a True Story. Ditch the i-pod, this must be listened to from start to finish. It's catchy, cruisy simple and just plain satisfying. Get it!
You won't need to listen to anything else.........2007-02-12
This cd is sooooooo good! It has a little bit of everything...I never get tired of listening to it. I have turned on friends to this cd, and they all come back saying the same thing...they can't stop listening to it. Cays Crays is one of my favorite all time songs. The lyrics and music keep me hanging on, and just when it sounds like the song is over, it gives you a taste of roots and dub. The horns on this cd are great, and are something that is lost these days to synthesizers on most cds. The musicians on this cd are all very talented and truely understand music, and it shows on this creative cd. I've been to New Zealand twice and it is my favorite place in the world, and listening to this cd takes me back there to enjoy the vibes and mana of Aotearoa.
Other great New Zealand artists to check out if you enjoy this are Trinity Roots, The Black Seeds, Salmonella Dub, Kora, and Hollie Smith(she can be heard on some of FFD's tracks and has an EP out). Conscious Roots 2 is a great compilation to listen to for an ontroduction to different NZ artists. I am a roots lover, so my recommendations reflect that...Enjoy!
"Do it for the love of music.".......2007-02-08
It's easy to see how much these 7 guys really do love music, as the New Zealand collective known as Fat Freddy's Drop offer up a real diverse sounding album, filled with reggae and jazz infused downtempo vocal tracks. Joe Dukie, aka Dallas Tamaira has one of the smoothest sounding voices of any electronic or pop male vocalist I've heard in a while. His soulful and crisp sound instantly take any lyrical journey up a notch to the next level. It's DJ Fitchie doing the mixing, Fulla Flash on sax, Jetlag Johnson on guitars, Dobie Blaze on keys, Ho Pepa on trombone, and Tony Chang on cornet. These guys have no shortage in delivering jazzy soundscapes with a touch of dub and reggae to back Dukie.
It's a different sounding album then most US music listeners would be accustomed to, as it's a far cry from the pop that's scattered across our top 40. However, in New Zealand, this album has been on their top 40 chart for an astonishing 90 weeks and counting, and was the biggest selling album in NZ in 2006. It's no wonder, as this is a quality album, by a unique musical collaboration. Mixing jazz, electronica, reggae, and soulful vocals, Fat Freddy's Drop have created a mind opening venture into current music trends.
The album features the singles Flashback, a vocal track which sounds reminiscent of 60's Motown; Wandering Eye, probably the most mainstream sounding vocal track on the album; Roady, a playful dub track with some slick lyrics from guest Ladi 6; Ernie, a jazzy downtempo track with a full 4 minutes of soothing piano melody until the vocals finally kick in; and one of my favorites, Cay's Crays, which features the ultra catchy chorus line, "the skank be the rock in my life".
Since this album has been out in other places before it hit the US, we can already seek out several versions and remixes of lots of these tracks. Especially notable is the Jazzanova's Mashed Bag mix of Flashback, where they remove the broken beat sound of the original, and turn it into a an even more vintage sounding vocal track, by infusing it with an all jazz sound. Cay's Crays also has a cool remix out there by One Self, which features two guest reggae vocalists and additional lyrics. A rare, live version of This Room can be found on Gilles Peterson's BBC Sessions compilation. It's exceptional, as they tend to make each track sound unique every time they play it elsewhere. You won't find them sounding the same twice, but you can count on every time sounding especially good, which further proves how diverse and musically talented these guys really are.
A do not miss artist album that needs more exposure her in the US. It's better than the majority of the major artists and tracks now being played on US radio and popping up on our charts. If you are looking for a mix of exceptional vocals and nu jazz sounds, look no further. I can't wait for more from these New Zealand guys, and hopefully their stuff will reach these shores much quicker next time! One last note is that the store I shop at had this erroneously thrown into the pop/rock section, when it should be in either electronic, lounge, jazz, or even reggae. So, check around, order it here, or do whatever you have to to own this great album.

Product Description
Postmodern folk with a tinge of Americana. If you want to reduce it to an easily digestible phrase, that's what you might call the music of Kelly Flint. As the sultry voice for the trenchant songs of David Cantor in cult faves Dave's True Story, Kelly made five albums and was the toast of the New York Times, the Kennedy Center, and more. But now it's time for her to spread her solo wings, or more appropriately, to DRIVE ALL NIGHT. That's the title of Flint's first solo album, and what that album's about is the sum total of the places she has been. In the album's warm, organic arrangements, acoustic sonorities, and occasional open-road, real-America flavor, you can discern Flint's Midwestern youth, spent soaking up the classic folk-rockers of the '70s. In the more complex shapes that Flint's lyrics conjure in the mind's eye, and the subtle harmonic twists that keep DRIVE ALL NIGHT from becoming strictly an "Americana" album, her coming of age in New York City is apparent. Her involvement in the jazzy sophistication of Dave's True Story, her immersion in the complicated, urgent, shades-of-gray sensibility that is the experiential dividend of New York life it's all in this striking new batch of songs. Sometimes the trenchant bite is just under the surface, and sometimes it snaps up to nab a piece of your heart. Produced by Jeff Eyrich, bassist and producer for Dave's True Story, DRIVE ALL NIGHT doesn't leave Flint's previous musical life entirely behind; you can still hear the combination of hope and world-weariness, blue moods and gossamer balladry that helped make that group indie darlings. But this album adds another string to Flint's bow, and establishes her as a distinct musical entity, ultimately reliant on nothing but her own artistic road map.
Customer Reviews:
Flint Scores High.......2007-07-26
Flint's first solo album is a surprise to those expecting to hear the same Kelly Flint featured in Dave's True Story--A pleasant surprise that is! Kelly's almost country like approach works prefectly with her great voice. I can't wait to hear her next CD.
nice variety.......2007-07-17
I have enjoyed all of the CD's from Dave's True Stories. I like this one too. Not as sassy, smart, or sophisticated as the work from DTS, but still very enjoyable..."Cartoon" in heavy rotation. Analogous to "Girl in the other Room" and Dianna Krall's other work. If you like the voice, you'll appreciate something new.
soon to be your favorite balladeer.......2007-05-09
I am jealous of all of you who have yet to discover Kelly Flint.
You will be amazed at her rich mellow delivery, her poetry, her can't-keep-still beat.
You will be moved, in more ways than one. Buy this.
Kelly! Kelly! Kelly! .......2007-03-08
What do you do when you are blessed with an angelic voice, a beautiful smile and know how to write a tune as well? If you're Kelly Flint, the voice of "Dave's True Story", you release a solo album. Combining an interesting mix of mostly folk-inspired originals, this album highlights yet another side of Kelly's talents. And this listener thinks that this is only the tip of the iceberg! Short and Sweet = Highly Recommended. BUY IT!
Solo Kelly is a lovely change from DTS.......2007-03-03
Dave's True Story vocalist Kelly Flint makes Dave Cantor's clever New York jazz one of music's great joys, so it was with great anticipation that I waited for Kelly's first solo release. The CD is clearly Kelly - and while it's the same Kelly, she's, well... different. The CD is not what I expected. But it's wonderful. Kelly isn't a cyncial NY'er here, rather, she's from America's heartland. She's no longer jazz, now she's folk. But, she's still beautiful to listen to. DTS is rich cabernet. Kelly is champagne. Buy this, light a fire, pour a glass and enjoy.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.
Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11
This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

On her debut album, Based on a True Story, Lil' Mo moves from behind the scenes into the spotlight. You'll probably recognize the soaring vocals on "Superwoman Pt. II" from her hook work for artists like Ja Rule and Missy Elliott. Taking almost all of the writing credits on her debut, Lil' Mo uses her imagination and her brilliant alto to let listeners know that she's more than just a pretty voice. Mo uses her evocative vocal abilities to transform the clichéd story of a little girl with big dreams on "My Story" into a moving piece of music that sends chills up the spine with every climb of her clear voice. Equally powerful is Mo's remake of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," where she displays the full extent of her range. Likewise, songs like "Supa Star" and "Player Not the Game," featuring Carl Thomas, will send you on an ethereal ride through Lil' Mo's intricately woven world. Lil' Mo's in full command of her voice and material on Based on a True Story, and after one listen, you'll marvel at this new super-singer. --Felicia A. Wilks

Based On A True Story.......2005-05-18
i remember this album when I was 14. I loved this album and it is tight and she can blow like any other diva. The album is like a chapter in her life,as every song is a reflection of her. With soul and clarity, each song is deliciously brewed and produced under a kaleidoscope of lush instrumentation. She co-wrote some of the songs. This album should have been promoted more. Remember, this was 2001.
Hot!!! a must-buy!!!.......2004-08-28
some people don't get this album cuz they're not from the ghetto like i am. it really shows Lil' Mo's character and the lyrics r really really really really gewd & clever!
...Horrible........2002-11-06
The hype is what made this album so bad. The album had so much hype, it was so long awaited...and then it turned out horribly. The songs are beat. For a great vocalist sure did make a bad album...
Wish there was a 'lil mo' to this average CD.......2002-02-24
The up side: Lil Mo clearly shows some potential in her debut CD. She writes, or co-writes most of the songs on the CD. And she sings the songs with a passion. "My Story" and her gospelized Cyndi Lauper "Time After Time" remake are particularly heartfelt. Her voice is strong and sharp, reminiscent of Michelle from Destiny's Child. Halfway decent ballads/midtempo numbers include "Player Not The Game", "She Cood Neva B Me", "Saturday" and "How Many Times". And of course, there's the hit "Superwoman Pt. II" with Fabolous.
The down side: A little misleading advertising - listeners lured into this CD by the funky electronic bleeps of "Superwoman Pt. II" should NOT expect more of the same. The rest of the CD is largely comprised of midtempo housewife R & B material (although there is "Gangsta", an unnecessary uptempo number built off Snoop's "Gin & Juice").
And the songs are mostly just average, even the better ballads mentioned above. It's the kind of sweet material that plays just fine in the background. There's nothing dreadful about any of it, but there's nothing transcendent either. Not much that steps above the level of routine filler on a Kelly Price or Faith Evans CD. In other words, its a nice first effort, a fine three star CD of the moment. But I find it unlikely that folks will be playing this one much beyond this year, after which plenty of new average "one hit" CDs will come along to replace it.
I remain impressed by Lil Mo's singing and writing efforts. I hope that the songs improve even more with experience. And I recommend that buyers either hold out for a cheap used copy of this - or hold out a few years to see if Lil Mo makes it big enough to merit a 'greatest hits' collection. If she does, I'm sure it'll have the best tracks from this, and if she doesn't last - you probably won't have missed much.
IT'S COO.......2001-11-23
Lil' mo's CD is something that u can sit back and relax to. her best songs are ta da, supa star and sturday. but there is others that are just as good. ofcorse there are other songs that can bore you. but she is a talented young lady that has to sart somewhere and then go from there.

Album Description
The Simple Twist of Fate CD had its genesis several months ago, when Dave's True Story was invited to play the annual DylanFest at a winery in upstate NY. The assignment was simple--the repertoire must be all-Dylan. The band members (Kelly Flint: vocals, Dave Cantor: guitar, and Jeff Eyrich: standup bass) picked their favorite Dylan songs and went to work on transforming them into the Dave's True Story style. Just before going onstage Dave commented, "either we're going to be tarred, feathered and run out of town for taking liberties, or they're going to love it." The audience apparently loved it, as there were many requests afterward from people to "buy the CD." The band had a great time doing it, so the next week they convened at Bennett Studios in New Jersey and recorded their Dylan program, including "Simple Twist of Fate," "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," "I Want You," "Just Like a Woman," "You're a Big Girl Now," "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," and a classic Dave rendition of "If Dogs Run Free."

When the stuff is that good ..........2006-11-10
The material DTS chose to cover here includes some of the very very best Dylan songs. Add a nice voice and some fairly standard pop-jazz arrangements and you have a very nice easy listening CD. Nothing that'll knock your socks off except Bob's lyrics delivered by a lovely voice, with subtle musical backing.
Nothing wrong with that.
Interesting side project.......2005-12-20
I think this is great-- a nice suprise from the group & Kelly Flint's able to make the
transition to Dylan songs very well. Also nice to hear Dave's more folk side of playing-- with still some nice little jazzy elements. I like all the 'Radio Mix' ones the most I think, & the slightly quickened pace of "Just Like Tom Thumb Blues" is a fine contrast to female covers like Judy Collins or Linda Ronstadt (& her lower voice too is distinctive contrast to them). I don't know if we need three versions of "You're a Big Girl Now," but interesting anyway. If you ever wondered what say, Peggy Lee, might sound like singing Dylan-- here's your chance. Maybe they can do some Joni Mitchell songs next!
What I Always wanted done with Dylan!.......2005-12-08
I have all Dylan's albums. I believe he is the BEST songwriter - bar none.
However his voice is not always what I want to hear!
I have always wanted to hear a "cool chick" do Dylan - Joan Baez was great - but hardly cool.
DTS have done a wonderful job.
I am a DTS fan, and also have all their CD's.
Please do more Dylan!
I will buy anything you can do by Dylan!

Great Soft Listening.......2005-11-07
I never thought I would give 5 stars to an album like this, but it is really excellent. I am not a fan of soft listening music (Kenny G, etc.), but this is a fave of mine.
just the best!.......2004-10-08
Kelly Flint and Dave Cantor! Wow! Love the hypnotic sound. The lady can sing. If you're having a bad day and are stressed out (not a good thing at all, as we know by now) this is the kind of mellow-sounding rock that can take that stress away and make you feel pretty good about things after all.
I only wish that these talented artists would create a few more albums.
Own three of their CDs and love all three!
Well-Crafted and Goofy Fun.......2002-12-10
Many people are content to listen to songs whose lyrical complexity ranges all the way from "Ooh, baby" to "Ooh, baby, ooh". And there's nothing wrong with that. But sometimes it's nice to have a change of pace and try something a little more daring and sophisticated. With Dave's True Story, you'll find references to Tutankhamen, mermaids, and rocks impacting skulls. And also eggs made of "rare Siberian wood". I'm still not quite sure about that last one, but evidently it has something to do with bondage. So I guess this album deserves an adult rating.
David Cantor writes the lyrics, Kelly Flint provides the vocals. (Cantor also takes an amusing vocal turn on "Flexible Man", an ode to kink.) He notes his influences as including Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett, and Steely Dan's Donald Fagen. Together, Cantor and Flint create a smoky and sly sound with retro jazz/standards roots, music that doesn't take itself altogether seriously but that rewards the careful listener who wants to feel their college education counted for something.
This release features some bonus tracks, including an updated version of "Crazy Eyes". (Evidently, this song and "Sequined Mermaid Dress" were featured on the soundtrack to "Kissing Jessica Stein", an indy film of a year or two ago.) I did not find their covers of "Fever" and "Blue Moon" to be too compelling, but I did like the instrumental work on the former.
Be that as it may, if you're looking for something a little bit intellectual, a little subversive, and a little naughty, this is an excellent album to buy. Just let me know about those rare Siberian wooden eggs...
Exceptional, unique, cool music..........2002-08-08
I cannot find enough superlatives to describe this cd. That I waited so long to get acquainted with this group's unique music is my loss! Not easily characterized, other people have described this as jazz/noir/lounge music. It doesn't really matter what you call it; I haven't stopped listening to it since I first heard it at a local store's listening station last week. David Cantor is an expert songsmith. He MUST be the best lyricist in contemporary America. Witty, intelligent language that he even manages to rhyme! Many of the songs are perfect little gems of human stories. And in his music, he has created the perfect accompaniment to his words. Furthermore, Kelly Flint wraps her voice around the words and music so well that you feel as if she's living each song. She has impeccable phrasing, timing, and inflection. What a great song interpreter! Besides Mr. Cantor's songs, the standards "Blue Moon" and "Fever" are included here. Ms. Flint's version of B.M. is the first one I've been able to listen to without cringing. As for "Fever," Peggy Lee's and Shirley Horne's versions pale to Ms. Flint's. If you're temperature doesn't rise when you hear this track, you'd better check your pulse to see if your heart is still beating!

Customer Reviews:
Great representation of music from a great singer.......2007-01-07
A terrific album by a great singer. This album represents the considerable territory that Kiri Te Kanawa covers in here repertoire. She moves easily from Handel to Puccini to Jerome Kern. The insertion of classic show tunes as a part of this CD is a nice little plus. Some opera stars absolutely kill popular music by overwhelming it with operatic technique (listen to Richard Tucker singing "What now my love"; this is a pleasant little tune, but it can't stand up to Tucker's voice of steel, using all the power at his command). Te Kanawa sings these songs, for the most part, nicely and does not overpower them with operatic conventions.
She does a wonderful job on Handel's "Let the bright seraphim," displaying good coloratura technique, as a matter of fact. This cut nicely illustrates the clean sound of her voice. Her version of "Dove sono" (from Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro) is a reflective rendering of this aria. The smoothness of her vocal line is wonderful to hear. Her version of "Vissi d'arte" (from Puccini's Tosca) also illustrates the art of Dame Kiri.
The popular tunes that follow are very interesting. She and Jose Carreras, at the outset, begin to overwhelm "Tonight" (from "West Side Story," with--by the way--Leonard Bernstein himself conducting this cut), making it appear that this might be one of those dismal pieces where opera singers wreck songs. However, shortly thereafter, the song becomes more Broadway than Metropolitan Opera, and that is to the good. Better still are Te Kanawa's versions of classic songs such as "Summertime" (from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess), where singing in a higher register works nicely and where she treats the song on its own terms; just so, Jerome Kern's "Smoke gets in your eyes" is sung so well. It is a poignant version of this song.
All in all, for those who are curious about Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, this is one interesting entrée. Well worth acquiring and listening to.
Beautiful voice, great collection.......2005-11-21
I think Kiri has a beuatiful voice, she is never overtly dramatic, but the people who call her the "church soprano" should hear this album. She can sing sacred music better than many other opera stars, but she is so great as Countess in Mozart's Figaro. This is a great collection of many different pieces, from operas, sacred works, musicals, all sung with lots of feeling. Let The Bright Seraphim is the aria she sang at the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, it is such a splendid performance. My favourite piece on this album is probably Mozart's Laudate Dominum, but there are no disappointing songs here. Her voice is so warm, and she really gets involved with the text. If you are a big fan of Kiri, you should get this collection, it is such a nice selection of her greatest hits, and it is a very good introduction for new fans.
Magnificent.......2005-02-20
I admit straightout to know nothing of opera - the cd is my first of its kind. Knowledge, however, is not required to enjoy this cd, only the ability to listen and feel.
Hearing her voice used as an instrument so beautifully I cannot but fall a little in love with her whenever listening to it.
The selection of tracks is varied; I probably prefer the classical tracks, but all are well performed in my opinion.
Kiri Te Kanawa Is Peerless.......2004-07-11
She looks and sounds so beautiful. The first time I ever heard the inimitable voice of Kiri Te Kanawa was on a recording of Salaambo's aria from CITIZEN KANE for the RCA film classics series on vinyl. It was one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of music ever composed by Bernard Herrmann. It was Kiri Te Kanawa performance of this piece that was so incredible. I had seen the film several times, but to hear a high fidelity recording of Kiri Te Kanawa on this particular piece really demonstrated not only the raw talent but also a depth of intuitive emotion that she brought to Herrmann's composition. Anyone that could interpret the inner struggle behind Herrmann's music so precisely demonstrated an uncommon ability to become one with the music. Her performance of "Ave Maria" on this CD is referent and exquisite. I love Leonard Bernstein's piece from WEST SIDE STORY that Kiri performs so vibrantly with Jose Carreras. I still can't pronounce her entire name correctly but Kiri Te Kanawa is the epitome of a well-honed talent. The selections on this CD are appreciably diverse demonstrating her phenomenal range and abilities. Kiri Te Kanawa has been and still is a gift to us all. This CD is wonderful.
I stood up also!!.......2003-07-31
Yes, Kiri at 59 is something special indeed. The great moment for me in Edinburgh was Reynaldo Hahn's à Chloris - I always thought Susan Graham owned this song, but Kiri's version from that moment on was the one I will always remember.
Do catch her & the wonderful Julian Reynolds with a similar program at the Royal Festival Hall on november 24th. If you have any money left buy this album from amazon.com. Great cover!

Disney Always Rocks.......2005-09-29
Yeah looks like it's a great get, if you haven't already got every CD by disney. Didn't know the song You'll be In my Hear was a Tarzan track. Must be a spin off to You'll be in My Heart. Its all good.
Awesome collection!.......2003-10-19
I have to say, that with a 5 year old who is obsessed with the movies that these songs go with, it has made the perfect gift! She spends hours listening to this CD while doing more productive activities than sitting in front of a TV watching the movie. The songs are special to her because of the movies, and she actually does her schoolwork well with these fun songs playing. As a music lover and a Disney lover, we both agree at 5 and 30 that this is a hit.
For adult listeners, the Disney songs sung by "real" singers.......2003-07-22
Trivia Challenge: Included in the 16 tracks on "Disney's Superstar Hits" is the only song from a Disney film to hit #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts. See if you can remember which one it is before I give the answer away at the end. No peaking ahead.
The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.
There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt. Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle.
This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade. Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life." On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata."
Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993. It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.
Good CD.......2002-12-29
This is a great CD, but I was kind of disappointed that there weren't more tracks on it. Other than that, you and your kids will be singing along in the car for sure.
