I heard Pilentze Pee on my clock radio in the late 80's and went down and bought the album immediately, and it is still a favorite.

This album, and the music of the choir is magnificent - in richness of sound, vocal artistry and spiritual depth. The blending of rural folk music -- in itself highly sophisticated harmonically and rhythmically -- with modern composition results in an almost otherworldly mood. Their earthy, unadorned vocal style seems all at once ecstatic, elegaic, and humble. Their performance style, no vibrato, clear, sharp, high toned calls, seems to plumb the root of the human condition, and...beyond. I do not believe there is a universal musical language. However, this is as close as it gets.

I discovered this album about 10 years ago and I have remained transfixed with these ladies ever since. The first song I heard was "Kalimankou Denkou," and immediately, my whole idea of what music is changed forever. The dissonant harmonies and power behind these voices more than make up for the fact that I cannot understand a word of Bulgarian-- which doesn't matter-- their incredible talent comes shining through.

My other favorite on this CD is "Sableyalo mi Agontze" for the absolutely ethereal harmonizing.

If you haven't bought this CD yet but are curious, buy it because I can practically guarantee you've never heard anything like this before. This is the best CD in my library.

Released in 1988 after Marcel Cellier brought never-before-heard recordings to the West, LE MYSTERE DES VOIX BULGARES was an explosive suprise for music lovers. Thirteen songs performed by the Bulgarian State Television Female vocal choir, the disc displayed a highly exotic method of singing where each singer has limited vocal range but piercing projection and resonance, and polyphony using intervals never heard in traditional Western art music.

One thing should be said from the start: this is not authentic Bulgarian folk music, but rather sophisticated arrangements made by composers during the Communist era. Many of the lyrics here are from old folk songs, and the method of singing each singer displays is truly old, but you're crazy if you think any folk music has four-part counterpoint. Still, folk cultures are dying across Europe, and these arrangements are becoming all we have left of a precious tradition snuffed out by Western decadence.

The disc opens with the droning "Pilentze Pee" which immediately gives the listener a full blast of this exotic tradition. With parallel seconds in the harmonic writing, pitches fluctuate strikingly yet under perfect control. Ditto for the eerie diaphonic chant of "Schopska Pesen". The mournful "Kalimankou Denkou" and "Pritouritze Planinata" are simplest in their harmony, and most nearly approach village singing. "Erghen Diado", where the choir is accompanied by drum, shows the humour stereotypically attributed to the people of the Shopsko region.

While the music is phenomenal, I'm unhappy with Nonesuch's packaging. No lyrics or translations are provided for the songs--although since most are about death and unrequited love, this may be to spare some sense of magic for the listener who doesn't speak Bulgarian. The transliteration used is meant for speakers of French, and is filled with typos to boot, which makes it hard for one to reconstruct the original Cyrillic title of each song. Still, this is the best introduction to a fascinating choral tradition, and heavily recommended for open-minded music fans, lovers of Bulgarian culture, and students of the Bulgarian language. The four-star rating is given only because there's some dead wood, and to get thirteen songs that truly represent the best of this choral writing, you'd have to buy several CDs.

Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein ... and if they could hear this collection, they would love her right back. The curly-haired, honey-voiced Tony-winning star has been more closely associated throughout her career with Stephen Sondheim and Jerry Herman, but she's perfectly suited to the grand waltzes and introspective moments of the R&H canon. "If I Loved You," "It Might As Well Be Spring," and "Something Wonderful" would probably make anyone's wish list for this combination of star and songs (a list that would also last much longer than 46 minutes). Other welcome selections include "Some Enchanted Evening," "Out of My Dreams," the little-known "I Haven't Got a Worry in the World" (from the play Happy Birthday), and the inside joke of "There Is Nothing Like a Dame," all supported by the baton and orchestrations of Sondheim favorite Jonathan Tunick. This is a warm valentine to the beloved songwriting team. --David Horiuchi

I totally disagree with the previous negative reviews of this cd. What were they listening to anyway? Certainly not this recording. First,Bernadette Peters is THE greatest Broadway musical performer of our time. I rate her right up there with Merman,Martin,Verdon,and Channing. She has a beautiful and distinctive voice,and her acting ability shines through every song. One reviewer said that these songs were originally written for large,operatic voices. What??? With the exception of Pinza,this is simply not true. When I have heard opera singers perform R&H songs,it just doesn't work. Too big. Actually,Bernadette suits these songs perfectly. Her somewhat softer voice gives a new dimension and insight to the grand old standards. I will give special praise for her performance of the songs: IF I LOVED YOU, OUT OF MY DREAMS, SOMETHING WONDERFUL, and SOME ENCHANTED EVENING. And extra special praise for SOMETHING GOOD. She brings life and passion to this song;I have never heard it performed better. I was greatly moved by it. If you love Rodgers & Hammerstein and if you love Bernadette Peters, BUY THIS ALBUM! You will love it.

4 out of 5 stars To the critics of "BP Loves RH"..........2004-04-17

I would ask detractors of this CD to consider the dates and location when and where this album was recorded: Sept 19, 21 and 24, 2001 at the Record Plant(sic)in NYC. Get it yet?

What if you were BP and Tunick, professionals as you are, recording a RH album for Angel eight days after 9/11? Would you be at your best? And singing "well worn, sentimental" RH songs recalling a time when NYC was the Great Big Apple of the World. Wouldn't a lump be in your throat? Listen to "It Might as Well Be Spring" again. Does it sound cheerful and relaxed? Or a little sad?

My friends, this is BP's 9/11 tribute to a City that has treated her like royalty. With Dame and Dope being the only exceptions, perhaps Tunick's otherwise subdued orchestrations reflect the mood of the day and of the performers and engineers present at the studio. This is why I heartily recommend this recording to BP fans. I didn't get it either until I read the stats.

Bernadette Peters is a legend; one of the few true Broadway musical legends still performing today; and that's why it pains me to say that her latest album is also her weakest work.

While her beautiful voice is still intact and capable of being as gorgeous as ever, she just doesn't seem to breath life into any of these songs. Even "Some Enchanted Evening" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" -- two songs that beg for emotion -- don't even get near the credit they deserve. And during some of the tunes, her voice seems to almost crack, although it never quite does.

I don't want to sound mean here. I love Bernadette Peters; but I also know she is much better than this album. Want proof? Purchase the cast recording of Gypsy :)

Her masterful concert for PBS was done just a couple years earlier. It's almost hard to believe this is the same energetic and spunky singer.

It's a grand night for singing? One wouldn't think so by listening to this.

2 out of 5 stars Am I missing something?.......2002-12-31

I received my copy of this CD the day after watching an American Masters bio of Richard Rogers, and I was psyched. I love Bernadette Peters and I adore Rogers & Hammerstein - but I was sorely disappointed in this album. All the way through it I kept having the feeling they had to wake Ms. Peters up between cuts. Even songs like "It's a Grand Night for Singing" had about as much spark as a wet match. The arrangements just did not do justice to either Ms. Peters or Rogers and Hammerstein.

I feel like a traitor, but I just cannot recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Fabulous Miss B Does It Again!!!.......2002-11-21

Not that I ever, EVER doubted it, but this album just reaffirms in my mind that Bernadette Peters can do ANYTHING! Every single song is gorgeous. Each note sung with extraordinary passion. And she has colored each lyric with layers and layers of meaning and subtext, a skill that has led to her being known as the foremost interpreter of the works of Stephen Sondehim.

Not that there's not some fun in there, too. "The Gentleman is a Dope" and her version of "There Is Nothin' Like a Dame" (she is the first female to record this, I might add!) are great examples of how she is able to bring her wonderful comic abilities into the music of perhaps the greatest team of composers ever.

Her renditions of songs like "Something Good", "Some Enchanted Evening" and "If I Loved You" are enough to make you believe in love all over again. Then, you have the playful "Mister Snow", which seems like it was written just for Bernadette, and "You'll Never Walk Alone", which still sends chills up my spine every time I hear it.

But let's not forget the fabulous opening tune "It's A Grand Night for Singing", her beautiful version of "It Might As Well Be Spring", the light and lovely "Out Of My Dreams", the extremely enjoyable "So Far", a terrific interpretation of the classic "Something Wonderful" and the carefree "I Haven't Got A Worry in the World".

Each and every one of these tunes is a treasure. This is a wonderful mixture of some well-known and some more obscure Rodgers and Hammerstein melodies... a mixture which is only made better by Bernadette's extraordinary ability to interpret a song- a skill that has helped to make her the Broadway legend she is. It is a must for not only musical theatre fans, not only R&H fans, not only fans of Bernadette, but anyone who is looking for something that's really worth listening to!

    Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

    When I was growing up in the US it was still very difficult to buy Bulgarian music, even for a Bulgarian-American living in a major US city like myself. Luckily I owned this, along with another similar LP and I can honestly say I've listened to it (on LP and later CD) thousands of times in my life.

    This CD represents many kinds of traditional Bulgarian music, from chorals to gaida (bagpipes) to horos (dance). They're nice examples. I can't say they've compiled the most famous or popular traditional songs of Bulgaria, but it is a nice cross-section. It also has musical styles from several regions throughout the country.

    The number four track; Ogreyala Mesetchinka (The Moon Shines) is particularly noteworthy for those interested in vocal styles.

    If you're interested in Bulgaria's place in traditional world music this should whet your appetite for more. It should direct you to the genres you like best. And like I said earlier, I relied on this album for nearly two decades, so you can't really go wrong!

    i remember reading an interview with frank zappa in downbeat in the middle 70's, (bulgarian music was way below the radar at that time) they asked him what he was currently listening to, and he mentioned this album. could zappa be wrong?

    This is where the whole Mysterious Voices began, with this 1955 recording of the Koutev Ensemble. The sound is clean and the music is sublime. Don't be put off by the recording date, the performance is timeless. A rich variety of choral songs with some smaller vocal groupings; soft melodies and mountain style hollering. The exotic dance tunes make a pleasing contrast. I have never tired of hearing it. Guaranteed to make you tingle!

    Glass's superb opera "Akhnaten" is a dramatic musical story of the reign of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhnaten, who sharply broke with a long tradition of idol worship and an entrenched priesthood to establish the first monotheistic religion in history. His reign began in 1375 BC, a century or so before the Hebrew exodus from Egypt, according to the small, informative book that comes with the set of two CDs. The story of Akhnaten is one of soaring religious victory and crushing political defeat. The opera story is based on archaeological research.

    Act One opens with the funeral of Akhnaten's father, which displays the traditional Egyptian preoccupation with death and the afterlife. The listener can appreciate the Egyptian vision of a divine pharaoh ascending to his heavenly home. The music depicts great pomp and heavenly celebration in this heavy drum piece that has become a favorite with Glass aficionados. A male chorus chants a text from the "Egyptian Book of the Dead" in the strong rhythms of the ancient Egyptian language, "Ankh ankh, en mitak..." (Live life, thou shalt not die...). The funeral procession then continues in the background throughout the opera, which seems to be a "presence" of the old order that will not die throughout Akhnaten's reign.

    A defining moment in the opera is "Akhnaten's Hymn to the Aten." It is sung in English to be clearly understood. Akhnaten's character emerges as so extremely devotional that all other matters must be inconsequential to him. His high (countertenor) voice suggests an otherworldly consciousness. The luscious music recedes to a quiet baseline, while Akhnaten declares his love for his one God with soaring musical fervor. "How manifold is that which thou hast made/ Thou sole God/ There is no other like thee/ Thou didst create the earth/ According to thy will...All the beasts are satisfied with their pasture/ Trees and plants are verdant...." When Akhnaten finishes his ecstatic hymn he leaves the stage empty, and only off-stage voices sing, in Hebrew, "Ma rab-bu ma-a-se-kha ha-shem..." (O Lord, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast thou made them all..." (Psalms 104:24, KJV)). If the listener has up to this moment missed the parallel between these two intensely religious cultures that coexisted in ancient Egypt, there is no escaping it now.

    Akhnaten is an energetic social reformer, but he ignores the work of militarily maintaining the Egyptian Empire that he has inherited, and, as portrayed here, he withdraws from the political realities of the time. Emboldened by this neglect perhaps, the priestly class that was deposed by Akhnaten whips up a disturbed populace into mob action. This mob scene, led by the priests in the driving cadences of Akkadian, the diplomatic language of the time, makes the mob scene from Glass's previous opera "Satyagraha" pale by comparison. In the music, with its almost chaotic, accelerating rhythms the listener can hear the dangerous excitement in the mob that brings about Akhnaten's downfall. But it is the terrible muffled drum emerging part way through this scene with heart-like throbs that makes it clear that Akhnaten's fate is sealed. Egyptian life then returns to its traditional ways with a vengeance that nearly obliterates Akhnaten's meritorious legacy.

    Glass then transforms the scene to modern Egypt in the ruins of Akhnaten's city. The narrator recites a text from a modern tourist guidebook, "There is nothing left of this glorious city...." The ghosts of Akhnaten and his family wander amid the rubble, and finally they see the background funeral procession (from Act One), which still continues. The ghosts then form their own procession. The music is rich and melancholic, as only Glass can do melancholy. The truth comes home: all works of mankind on earth perish, save only a few powerful ideas.

    The very idea of "minimalist" opera seems magically stillborn; fortunately, the orchestration (and no doubt the pageantry) of this piece are lush enough to render meaningless any claims to minimalism. In my opinion, though, it is best not to approach this as you would an ordinary piece of symphonic music. Glass's constant riffing without development no doubt seems simple to many fans of symphonic music; he's all prelude and no fugue. But his method is what it is.

    The constant arpeggios and repetitive riffs remind me more of the electronic music of 1984, when this piece had its debut. And if you bring the expectations appropriate for a work from that genre, the work starts to develop a great deal of appeal. This way, you won't be disappointed at the constant looping of minor-chord arpeggio riffs: they're what you expected. The text of the libretto, filled with chants in ancient Egyptian from the Pyramid Texts and the Book of the Dead seems interesting. The performance I remember best is that of David Warrilow, the "Scribe", who serves as narrator. He gets to declaim lines like "Horus of gold, mighty of arm as he smites the Asiatics" in a voice that I find reminiscent of Donald Pleasance.

    If this were an electronic future-pop album with stuff like this on it, I'd already be interested. Think of it as acoustic techno, and you won't be disappointed. It also makes a good soundtrack for an afternoon spent playing role-playing games.

    5 out of 5 stars And the Music Stands Alone.......2006-04-02

    Philip Glass is a theater person whose wide popularity has been greatly enhanced by the visuals that accompany his music: the music score for the film 'The Hours', his triptych of operas about men who changed the world in science ('Einstein on the Beach'), in politics ('Satyagraha') and religion ('Akhnaten') are just a few examples. Though his works for chamber orchestra and his symphonies enjoy wide acclaim, the purely musical values inherent in his operas have for the most part been relegated to recordings. To experience the pure music live without the visuals is an experience that should happen more often. As part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's adventurous and acclaimed 'Minimalist Jukebox' series, composer/conductor John Adams conducted important excerpts from this opera, for the first time allowing the stunned and wildly enthusiastic audience to appreciate the orchestral writing, the magnificent choral writing and the incomparable beauty of the countertenor Akhnaten (as sung by Daniel Bubeck) in the glory of the acoustic wonder of Disney Hall. The effect was overwhelming and turns the listener back to this full recording of the opera with enhanced appreciation.

    'Akhnaten' is a little miracle of minimalist opera. The orchestral scoring is for large orchestra minus violins (keeping his original opera small to fit in the orchestra pit at premiere gave that idea to Glass) with an interesting array of percussion instruments. The Prelude quietly sets the pulsating, quivering tone of ancient Egypt and after a narrator sets the scene for the death of Akhnaten's father, the funeral music is wildly percussive and full of brass figurations. The choral declarations are pulsatile and beautifully balanced with the orchestra. Yet when Akhnaten's unfolds his concept of monotheism, his countertenor lines are paralleled with trumpet in a truly spiritual ambience. The death of Akhnaten as proscribed by three male soloists is echoed in the choral writing for the crowd's response. It is a visceral experience.

    The recording captures all of the opera in fine, precise style and is easily a recording to return to for moments of favorite Glass writing. It is just satisfying to know that even excerpts played in a symphony hall validate the wonderful work the opera is. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

    I have had the fortune of seeing this opera (Boston Conservatory of Music, 2004). The raw haunting nature of this music found me crying at the end of the performance when
    Akhenaten and his family are murdered. I was spellbound. There are few things that should be required of all human beings, and listening to this music is one of them.

    How can the Evengelist preach without a bible? How can Bush rule without the script? How can How can Philip Glass compose without the arpeggio?

    Like so much of pop music, Glass' repetitive riffs/themes/compositions are born of pure laziness.

    I imagine the string player rehearsing for a Glass recording: "Wait a minute, didn't I write this whole section myself years ago in high school while practicing my minor chord fingerings?"

    I admire Dennis Russell Davies and his wide canvas, but how does he hold in his vomit after years and years and years and years and years of performing Glass compositions? Were Glass' symphonies used in Abu Ghrab to solicit information from enemy combatants? (I would have signed on the dotted line to stop the bleeding in my ears.)

    I asked this question years ago, and I'll ask it again: what is so interesting/great/new/appealing in hearing the same series of notes played over and over and over and over and over -- oh wow!, he just added one different note! -- and over and over and over? Britney Spears does that, and she's easier on the eyes.

    Prince said "there's joy in repetition" -- true, when the action is lovely. Yes, there are many places in Akhnaten where I lifted my head from my hands and thought "wow, this could be beautiful." But those damn arpeggios returned and mowed down the flowers with the weeds.

    Philip, throw away your crutches and walk on your strong two legs!

    The CD is good. It switches from live performances to tracks accompanied by 'mood' music. Personally, I prefer the live or acapella tracks because Acey often speaks with a high level of energy. That energy coupled with intellectually stimulating speech makes for good work with every release. My favorites on this particular CD; Market 4 Niggas & Picture This (Orig.)

    I was a huge Biohazard fan from 6th grade all the way to senior year of high school. Obviously, as I've grown older my tastes have drifted since my days of nonstop Biohazard listening. But here and there I go back and listen to them, and a lot of the stuff is still good. I think that 'State of the World Address' is the best representation of Biohazard. This is the first album I bought from them. No band around this era of time ('94) was combining metal and rap together (well, maybe some bands were but they weren't very good at it.) Biohazard are pioneers at what they created. The songs were truthful, sometimes positive, aware and politically conscious. This is and will always be their best album.

    Over time, I don't know what happened to Biohazard. Their last decent album was New World Disorder. After that, they went downhill. They began changing their sound a lot and they're lyrics turned to crap. It's all negativity now. What a waste!

    Here's a little review of the albums:

    Biohazard (1990) - Kind of cheesy. Bad production. Not really worth buying.

    Urban Discipline (1992) - Excellent. Biohazard found their sound on this one.

    State of the World Address (1994) - Very good. Musically, a ten. Very well thought out album

    Mata Leao (1996) - A more hardcore album. They tried something different on this one. Songs are very short and to the point. Very excellent lyrics though. I'm a fan of this fan.

    No Holds Barred (1997) - Live album. Not a big fan of live album but this one is worth checking out.

    New World Disorder (1999) - Some really good songs on this one like 'Switchback' and 'Skin.' Good production.

    Uncivilization (2001) - Really, really weak album. One good song. This is when they went downhill. The lyrics are atrocious. At one point they say, "I'm gonna f***ing kill you!" C'mon.

    Kill or be Killed (2003) - I didn't even buy this one because I knew it was gonna suck. Again, like the last album, the lyrics are violent and pathetic. Don't buy it.

    i'll have to agree w/ "big evil" on this one (the reviews title anyway)next to "urban.."this is my favorite. i never got into anthraxs' dabblings in rap too much,sure "i'm the man" was hillarious & "bring the noise" has improved w/ age .i just could'nt ever bring myself to buy them. biohazard on the other hand was impossible for me to ignore.no B.S. here !everyone's a serious musician! no vannilla ice gangsta day dreams either. these guys have lived their lyrics. make room for "state of the world adress" & "urban discipline" in your collection .right where you kept your p.o.d. & your linkin park .these will make nice frizbees or shiney coasters for your coffee table.

    "State of the World Address" is one of those records that defined an undeniable moment in time. Many have accused Biohazard of being "fakes" or mocked them for being a "one trick horse", but this record stands alone. The band managed to unleash a sonic fury on that few have ever captured though many have made pale attempts at imitation. The production is warm and captures the NYHC/hip-hop mix perfectly, and the band themselves sound as pissed off as possible. Biohazard came to this party to tell a story, and while that story may be a little too "out there" for some people...it's an exciting ride nonetheless.

    Catchy numbers such as "What Makes Us Tick" and "Down For Life" bridge the NYHC/hip-hop feel brilliantly with "How it Is" bringing in the slightly archaic rappers Cypress Hill to add to the vocalization. Other, heavier tracks such as "Love Denied" and "Five Blocks From the Subway" also paint horrific landscapes of urban decay and inner city stressfests. The songcraft here defined an entire career, and possibly defeated many later records by perfecting the formula to a point in which we may have never needed another record of this type.

    "State of the World Address" may be the one perfect record Biohazard will unleash. While some will love it and some will hate it...Biohazard remain the lone kings at what Biohazard do. Respect must be given...

    5 out of 5 stars Next to "Urban Discipline", this is the best from Biohazard.......2005-04-19

    The Brooklyn bombers hit a grand slam with their follow up to their previous landmark effort, "Urban Discipline". "State of the World Address" follows the same formula that most of Biohazard's albums have: tough guy, full throttle vocals, heavy guitar work with hip-hop elements, and a fierce attitude to match. The title track, "Down For Life", "Tales From the Hardside", "Pride", and the closing "Love Denied" are classic Biohazard songs that remain fan and concert favorites to this day, and next to "Urban Discipline", this is the best piece of material to come from the band. Sadly, besides devoted fans to Biohazard, not many listeners know this. Just like Helmet, Corrosion of Conformity, Eyehategod, Crowbar, and countless other acts, Biohazard never got all the attention they rightly deserved. Make no mistake, this is hardcore thought provoking metal that even over ten years after it's initial release still sounds timeless.

    With 'State of the World Address', Biohazard members reached perfection in their unique hard-core/metal style. To my own opinion, they have never issued such a good album again. It's hard to tell what I felt listening these (ALL) terrific songs when they got released ten years ago... Then, Biohazard was the band I used to revere the most at this time and, 'State of...' remained in my top of the list for a very long time...
