Album Description
You gotta believe...that's the message from Antigone Rising-five women whose Lava debut, From the Ground Up hits that place in your heart that Springsteen, U2, Aerosmith, and the greatest of the great bands reached in their young and hungry days. You know how rare this is. It's not just about writing terrific songs and playing them with a passion kindled through hundreds of nights in tiny, packed clubs until it's ready to blow through the roof and into the sky for the whole world to hear. Though, of course, Antigone Rising have done that.

I personally love the raw, live sound. These girls are amazing and really talented. I could listen to this CD forever.

WOW........2006-09-05
I worked at Starbucks and we played this CD, among others, non-stop and I've yet to grow tired of it. I've purchased their "From The Ground Up" and I am immensely satisfied. Every song is really good, though one in particular doesn't rub me right. "She Lived Here" is kinda weird to me, but that doesn't make it a horrible song. It's just one I tend to skip as I listen to the CD. *shrug* I love this album and I don't think enough people know about it.
Shouldn't Have Been Me.......2006-08-21
My mistake. I had only heard "Should've Been The One" which I thought sounded very good. That, however, was the only song produced in the studio and unfortunately the only song I liked enough to justify the purchase. The rest of the songs are live, apparently recorded at a small venue, if you can judge by the applause. Like I said...my fault. Not saying any of the songs are bad. Maybe more of them will grow on me. Just not what I expected. Moral: it pays to listen to most of a CD before you buy it.(duh) You never know what you're gonna get.
Completely Satisfied.......2006-08-03
I purchased a "used" but never opened CD from this seller and I am completely satisfied with my purchase. The CD came to me still in the shrink wrap and it plays like a brand new CD. I would definately purchase from this seller again!
Incredible.......2006-07-14
This is the best girl group, if not the best group going today. They produce hit after hit. The only challenge as far as listening to AR is to find a song that you do NOT like.

Album Description
From the multi-platinum selling Collective Soul comes a unique collection of hits and rarities performed acoustically. "From The Ground Up" will be the perfect piece to accompany the band's current release, "Youth". SoundScan on "Youth" has exceeded 120,000 units in the US, the record has consistently charted on the Top 20 Independent Album Chart, and it has fostered two Top 5 Rock singles ("Counting The Days" and "Better Now"). Initial pressings of "From The Ground Up" will include a Collective Soul guitar pick.
Customer Reviews:
get it.......2007-07-06
I don't care if it's just Ed and a guitar, this is one of the best albums I have ever listened to. Excellent acoustics, and Ed is awesome as ever. Just get it. You won't be disappointed.
Can't help it!.......2006-02-14
I would only NOT GIVE this album five stars, because it "only" has 9 songs, I think they should consider someday playing their entire song list in acoustic like they did here. This was something Ed (Roland) wanted to dedicate to the fans, as his own written introduction on the Cd says: from the very nature of the songs without the editing and sound effects.
I can't have enough of C.S. This album must be seen as a compliment to "Youth", and not as an album on its own. Although you get new material (Youth and the "No name song") it's for the fans to acknowledge how well these guys come up with a song from its roots, and it does actually sound terrificly without all the sound and mixing, just with the basics: percussion, bass and guitars.
I will display this Cd and "music from high places" and put the music in a lounge, where people can just chill and enjoy great musicians, playing power songs with amazing virtuosity.
Must buy CD.
Stop-gap release that doesn't add much to the CS catalogue.......2006-01-14
I am a huge fan of Collective Soul, have been since the early years, saw them in concert in 1995 opening up for Van Halen, and have seen them many times in concert since then. After their impressive run of mega-hits came to a close with the 2001 "Greatest Hits" album, Collective Soul took a long sabbatical, and finally returned with the excellent "Youth" album in late 2004. Six months later, they released this EP.
"From the Ground Up" (8 tracks, 31 min.) is unlike anything CS has released. Ed Rolland's liner notes indicate this was recorded in a mere 2 days. This collection is not a collection of demo-tapes, but instead a recreation of demo-tapes, and a stripped-down, acoustic only, sound of CS. Four tracks on here are from the "Youth" album, with a couple of older songs thrown in, including the only hit "December", and with one new song, "Youth", which presumably was meant to be included on that album, but for whatever reason wasn't. Most songs on here is just is Ed Rolland solo on acoustic guitar. The best of the bunch here is "Counting the Days", a nice band effort.
I'm not sure what to make of this EP (which sells at an album price, though). Collective Soul now self-releases its music, and I guess this is just another release to generate revenue, the cynic in me tells me. Up next from Collective Soul is next month's release of their great show with the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra from May, 2005, and I am much more excited about that than this curious EP. It's not bad, but it doesn't add much to the Collective Soul catalogue.
Very chilled.......2005-12-05
From the Ground Up
Collective Soul
It's not often that an acoustic, unplugged collection of songs goes down as well as the originals.
Too often the intangible magic captured in a proper recording studio is lost in an echoey rendition, and fans may feel cheated by what appears to be a poor brothers version of a hit.
Not so with Collective Soul's From the Ground Up, eight no-frills, no-fuss unplugged songs, mostly taken off their fairly successful Youth album.
It helps that lead singer Ed Roland's voice is as manly mannish without the polishing that comes with the producing process, and it is a tribute and a compliment to the band itself that they pull off popular songs at such a slower pace.
Because I think this is what hard-core fans may notice on this album: the tracks chosen, while familiar, are all slowed down quite substantially.
This is not a bad thing, as the overall mood to the album becomes one of chilled, relaxed tunes.
This is the perfect CD to play as background music on a lazy day, or louder when in a melancholic mood.
Best tracks include perennial favourite Compliment and the somewhat raw She Said.
Baby just spin me out!.......2005-10-31
I love Collective Soul. One of my fav. bands of all time. I also like the guitar pick that comes with. Anyways Ed Roland sings aweomse as always and the acoustic guitar is great. I especially like Counting The Days, its very jazzy. Awesome album made by an awesome band.. What more is there to say?

It will lift you up off the Ground.......2005-10-26
Great harmonies, great lead vocals, but most of all it simply fills up your soul, I can't say why, it just does, to me that's what great music is all about. No need to intellectualize just sit back and enjoy their gifts.
You've got to be kidding.......2005-08-30
One reviewer compared them to Springsteen or U2 in thier "early, hungry days" (which moved me to post my own review). What??? How about the more realistic comparison to Wilson Phillips, Dixie Chicks, or She-Daisy. These are talented women, they're cute (so they'll do the video circuit well), and they have nice harmonies - like a million other bands! They're not rare, or unique, or innovative. They play nice songs nicely.
I wanted to like them, really. I'm always looking for musicians who offer something unique (try Ilse DeLange if you like country - she's Dutch). But they're just what you'd expect from Starbucks - simple, mainstream performances that make for nice background music. And thier melodies are not at all memorable or interesting.
So they'll have a following, and do some gigs, but they won't have any impact on the music world. You might like thier CD - like the other gal-bands they have nice vocals and are very listenable. But they're easily replaced with the next "country" band that does the same.
CD sale.......2005-07-03
Product was exactly as described. Shipping was superfast. I would buy from again.
Stealth hits with broad appeal.......2005-07-02
Like others I got turned on to it from the Starbucks connection; whatever song they had on grabbed me as I walked in the door and I had to ask "who IS that?" Bought the CD. (Last time that instant attraction happened to me, other than my sweetie, was the Hear Music mix volume that is all the road music, the one with "Babylon" and Emmie Lou Harris on it.)
Anyway, first listen at home of Antigone Rising, I wasn't so sure for a moment. Sounded a bit rough from the live recording. But played it again right after and the rhythms, the voices, the tunes and the lyrics just clicked all at once. This group can sound country or alternative or womyn and the songs ALL SAY something meaningful. I felt their New York Village bar vibe right along with the twang. Cassidy has a unique nuanced voice and the instrumental lines are classy. So I've played it regularly in the car ever since. Today I transported with me my two grandaughters ages 3 and 6, and they were singing along with it and humming and clapping their hands. The little one yelled and clapped with the audience at the end of the CD, too. Cute and a good sign that this phenom group has VERY broad appeal. I'm ordering it for my sister, just divorced. She needs to hear "I am a Diamond." Maybe you do, too.
Fabulous Females Rock!.......2005-07-01
I walked past this cd several times at my local Starbucks before actually purchasing it a week ago. Now it's the only thing I'm listening to in my car. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. My favorite songs are include "Don't Look Back", "Michael". My least favorite is "Happy Home." I would not describe them as country at all. These girls are all about rock with amazing harmonies and melodies. I love musicians that write their own material and this band delivers!

GREAT MUSIC -- but the track listing is all wrong.......2005-12-12
I've always been a big fan of Eric Clapton's music. I had enjoyed bluegrass music from time to time, but the first time it made a big impression on me was when I heard the first Pickin' On Clapton album. I loved it, and a whole new genre of music opened up to me. The musicians on this album are definitely talented enough to bring Clapton's tunes to life in fine bluegrass form. I'm sure you won't be disappointed on that score. If you've ever enjoyed either Clapton's music or bluegrass instrumentals in general, you'll probably enjoy this.
The only thing that surprised me here is that most of the tracks are listed WRONG. They're printed wrong on the CD case, they're wrong in the liner notes, and they're wrong in Amazon.com's listing. (Well, 9 out of 12 are wrong, anyway.) Someone made a big mistake when stamping out these CDs. Here are the tracks in the order they actually appear on the disc:
1) Motherless Children
2) Bell Bottom Blues
3) Let It Grow
4) Badge
5) Strange Brew
6) Tulsa Time
7) Presence Of The Lord
8) Blues Power
9) Forever Man

Paul O'Dette has done more to introduce the lute and its extensive repertoire to modern ears than just about anyone. On Robin Hood, he plays a collection of Elizabethan ballads that were arranged for solo lute in the 16th century. Although the names of the composers of most of these pieces have been lost to us, the music is of a uniformly high quality and stands up very well next to the selections by known composers like William Byrd and Peter Phillips. O'Dette plays the selections on three instruments: the lute, the orpharion (a flat-back, metal-strung cousin to the lute), and the cittern, (a metal-strung instrument that is plucked with a quill rather than the fingers). The metal strings of the orpharion and cittern have a longer sustain than the gut strings of the lute, which gives the pieces played on them a sound similar to that of the modern steel-string guitar. O'Dette is renowned for his scholarship, which he demonstrates in the meticulously annotated liner notes, and for his formidable technique. But as powerful as his head and his hands are, O'Dette never forgets that it's the heart that makes these delightful works music rather than just a series of well-played notes. --Michael Simmons
Customer Reviews:
Elizabethan Ballads set for the lute.......2005-08-13
Paul O'Dette is unquestionably the finest performer on the renaissance lute who is recording these days. This CD is a compilation of 24 assorted ballad settings, from a wide variety of sources.
I like this CD somewhat better than its companion disc "The Royal Lewters", primarily because the highlights of the CD are tracks 13 through 17 featuring music of William Byrd. Along with John Dowland, Byrd represents the top of the food chain for Elizabethan composers, so this CD has some real compositional meat to it. The title track, "Robin Hood", is offered in a setting by one "Mr. Ascue", and it is quite a nice version.
O'Dette also performs 4 tracks on the orpharion, and 4 other tracks on the 4-course cittern. The timbre of these instruments takes some getting used to, but it serves for a nice contrast to the more mellifluous tone of his lute.
I believe that this CD and "The Royal Lewters" are available as a 2-CD set called "Lusty Gallant"; I would recommend the double-disc for a purchase rather than the two individual CDs.
