great cd.......2007-03-28

I must admit. Ive been sleep on missy's last few albums for the simple fact I had no disire to buy them. But now she came back strong on this album. My favorite songs are lose control which is a dance jam. I have to pop lock on that jam every time I hear it, lol. I prefer when she sings which are my favorite jams they are #9,12,6. It interesting hearing mary j. blidge rap on track 5. But any ways this is a high quality cd from missy elliot and I reccomend it.

Many Recipes But A Good Result.......2007-01-21

Missy Elliott must get credit for this album cause it was the first where she wasn't entirely relying on Timbaland's production. She let producers like Neptunes, Scott Storch, Rich Harrison and even herelf produce some songs. On some of her previous albums Timbaland had produced the majority of songs and eventually it looked like the production was more important then the quality of the lyrics or hook and Missy's song weren't always that good even if Timbaland's production skills were amazing. Only one single became a hit from this album out of only three released and that was "Lose Control", perhaps the worst song of the whole album that lazily samples Cybotron's classic breakbeat sample that also Africa Bambaataa once used. But this doesn't mean that the album is bad, as usual the production is hot and some interesting artists like old skool rapper Slick Rick appear on "Irresistable", Ciara and super annoying Fatman Scoop on "Lose Control" Mary J Blige on "My Struggles" which is a really good song by the way, then we have Idol Fantasia on "4 My Man". Best songs however are Neptunes "On & On" with a trademark futuristic beat and her third single "We Run This" with great drums and old skool sound. Closer "Bad Man" feauture some dancehall singers that I never heard of before, but it's a welcomed addition that sounds fresh. At the end of the day this is a solid record, with a good mix of trademark Missy beats and some new trendy collaborations aswell, Timbaland's impact here is minimal and infact he only produces 1 song (Joy). But Harrison, Neptunes and Missy herself do a good job on making some trendy party jams aswell as some slower songs. If you like Missy Elliott nothing should stop you to also get this album, but it's not her best. A solid 3.

"The Cookbook" - More Sweet Than Bitter.......2006-12-16

Is this Missy Elliott's best album? If the critical and commercial response is anything to go by, "The Cookbook", Missy Elliott's 6th studio album & the successor to 2003's commercially abysmal "This Is Not A Test!", must suck to some degree because it barely surpassed U.S. Gold sales. Then again, lacklustre album sales usually don't define an album's quality - a fact that is strongly enforced on this 16-track-long disc, which once again displays Missy Elliott flexing her abilities as a producer, singer, rapper and songwriter. Before and/or after listening to this album, there are four things you should definitely notice.

Firstly, there's the cover art. Aside from Missy Elliott's surprising weight loss, her ladylike, elegant appearance in front of the vintage microphone starkly contrasts to the attitude-packing tomboy, the finger-wagging fat-s**t, the stone-cold face portrait or the dog-handling feminist displayed on the cover arts of "Supa Dupa Fly", "Da Real World", "Miss E...So Addictive" & "This Is Not A Test!", respectively. Perhaps this would indicate a re-invention of sorts, but "The Cookbook" is anything but. Obligatory club bangers like the Apache-sampling, horn-driven raunchiness of "We Run This" & the bland Crunk of "Click Clack" are still present, while many of the album's other tracks -especially the introspective "My Struggles" (featuring Grand Puba & an unexpected rap from guest singer Mary J. Blige) and the Slick Rick featuring/sampling "Irresistible Delicious", one of the album's many endeavours into part-singing/part-rapping raunchiness- are laced with old-school musical inflections.

Secondly, Missy Elliott's female-empowerment shtick is virtually nowhere to be found. "Mommy", a minimalist club joint that aspires to uplift female parent strippers, turns out sounding less like a female-empowerment anthem than another dodgy shot at raunchiness; the aforementioned "We Run This" & "Can't Stop" -featuring Rich Harrison's trademark Go-Go production (e.g. chuck a sexy old-school guitar riff/loop or a bombastic horn sample over lively drum patterns & presto)- are more meaningless displays of unapologetic lewdness ; and the raunchiness factor hits its peak on "Meltdown", which -in the vain of the aforementioned "Irresistible Delicious"- alternates between viciously crude, detailed 16-bar rap verses & an overtly sexual singing hook over smooth, hypnotic production, courtesy of the omnipresent Scott Storch.

Thirdly, "The Cookbook" has more ballads than most of its predecessors, most of which work out a lot better than expected. "Remember When", despite the occasional (and possibly annoying) shots of "YES" and "HOLLER", is a beautiful ballad where Missy Elliott croons with sincerity and emotion about her thankfulness for her boyfriend's forgiving response to her unfaithfulness; "Teary Eyed" displays emotions of vengeance and regret through sharp songwriting and Missy Elliott's emotional singing vocals over a minimalist beat, as does its lesser counterpart "Time And Time Again".

Finally, Timbaland, Missy Elliott's long-time collaboration partner, is only present on 2 of the album's tracks - more specifically, "Joy" (featuring a surprisingly good rap from Mike Jones) & "Partytime" (featuring a short, blunt stab at Sisqo's current irrelevance). The former track, with its weirdly accentuated intro skit, minimalist bounce, ethereal vocal sample, late-track slow-motion effect and Missy's boastful lyrics, is definitely the better of the two tracks, and possibly one of the duo's better tracks in their whole catalogue. While Timbaland isn't direly missed, I would've preferred any of his better concoctions than "On & On", a suitably (but unfortunately) titled chunk of filler, featuring weak production from The Neptunes, an annoying vocal hook from Pharrell Williams & more of Missy Elliott's boastful threats and self-aggrandizement. Thankfully, the Dancehall collaboration between Missy, M.I.A. & Vybez Cartel on the ruthlessly upbeat "Bad Man" (on another note, the conclusive skit is nothing but downright filthy s**t that ought to be banned or restricted or something) and the classic lead single "Lose Control" -an infectious club tune that incorporates smartly chosen samples (Cybotron's "Clear & Hot Streak's "Body Work), Missy Elliott's club-ready attitude, Fatman Scoop's energetic chants and Ciara's sweet vocals (not to mention a short rap and a sweet a Capella break) into a tight Electro/Hip-Hop/Pop jam- does more than pick up the slack.

Altogether, this is a very good (and highly sexual) album that, with or without deep examinations of its purpose or content, is well worth the purchase. 4 stars!

When I bought this album, I was so disappointed. I put it away for a year without ever listening to it. The other day, I brought it out and gave it another listen. Still disappointed.

I respect the fact that Missy wants to grow as an artist, but leaving Timbaland is not the way to go. She brings a huge line-up of top notch producers, all of whom give Missy their worst production to date. (Yes, even the Neptunes.) Plus, all of the different producers give the album a lack of cohesion, which has never been a problem for any Missy album. (And she makes the mistake of putting all the slow songs at the end.)The Cookbook contains many samples, and they are all very uncreatively incorporated into the songs. Very lazy.

Missy's flow is nice and her lyrics have gotten better, even though she is kind of trying to be someone she's not at times. Most of the guest appearances are unnecessary and just there for credibility's sake.

Although I've done a lot of nitpicking, this is still a three-and-a-half star album. (In other words, I did not increase or decrease the ratin because it's Missy. I rate the songs, average their scores and get the final rating) But... this is without a doubt Missy's worst album to date. Maybe buy this album used, but that's it. And please don't let this one be your first Missy record. Buy any of her other ones before this.

Self indulgent mess of various horrible sounds and stupid rhymes. I bought this disc and immediately went to the doctor for a shot. I did not want to be infected by its disease. I still don't know what this rash is...

This album features all-moog versions of your favorite rock hits of the mid-'90s. It's a lot of fun to hear these songs in this way. Goofy, silly fun that is not meant to be taken seriously. Not everybody will like it, but if you enjoy weird interpretations of popular songs, you should check it out.

Electro-Hilarious.......2005-01-21

I have always been an electronic music fan. White Noise is one of my all-time favorites. Anyway, this CD is really funny and dancy too. I've never been a huge rock fan, but I think this version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the best ever!

Enjoy it for what it is - silly.

its MOE-GUH not MOOO-GUH and this delivers.......2004-01-17

the first of two cds produced for the scandalous and shortlived(?) restless records. manning is a geniuous. his work with jellyfish (spilt milk), shows his musical range and knowlege and committment to melody. he also tours or toured with beck on keyboards. this album is a tribute to the moog/pop tradition. many of the sounds and phrasing are reminiscent of classic moog artists like hugo montenegro (moog power) and perrey kingsly. the hits are funny and the album, although tongue in cheek, can hold its own in any party setting.. use discretion. if you like moog music, you need this and their second ye olde. the second record covers kiss and some boston. by the way, it is moe-guh with a long o. named after bob moog, the inventor of the machine. he will tell you himself. "not moooooog"

What A Riot!.......2002-01-06

This is like nothing you've heard before. This album is so funny that you can't believe that you're actually listening to it. It is a great collection of modern rock classics played on a Moog Synthesizer. My favorite is "Black Hole Sun". You will definitely get a kick out of this. It's good to have for novelty purposes.

If only they made more albums............2001-08-09

To appreciate this album, you must understand it was done tongue and cheek. Great vintage synths humourously cover 90's modern rock classics (and Neil Young's "Rockin In The Free World"). This is for any fan of vintage electronic music like Kraftwerk, Human League, Jan Hammer, Tangerine Dream and Soft Cell. Sort of a 90's "Stars on 45" idea.

I own the Bass Extremes Video so, I knew these 2 could play but, I was NOT expecting the musicality of this album. My Non-Bass playing freinds enjoy the music for the songs. If you want to listen to GREAT technique, Buy both of the Bass Extremes CD's (I did) Steve and Victor compliment each other and the writing is fantastic. I rated this as low as 5 starts because there is no higher grade. Bass players,GET THIS CD!!!!

This cd is simply the best electric bass centered recording I've ever heard. It's very well recorded. The music hooks you with grooving melodies. They pay homage to a past great with playful melodic "cameos" from Jaco. The one song with lyrics is wonderfully written and well sung. Don't hesitate and buy it.

This cd is very enjoyable, Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey show thier talent with original music played with leading bass and create a very original kind of music that can liked among jazz listeners. While Vic Wooten is probably one of the best bass players of today, mostly because of his technique, this is not a Wooten showcase of his wonderful playing abilits, in this cd Vic plays slow melodies or low grooves unlike his solo cds where his shows off his technique. This cd is very enjoyable specially for bass players or those who wants to experience bass guitar as a leading instrument in jazz fusion music.

HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED ! Cosidering that this CD was registered under BAILEY I thought for sure there would be more of him on the cd. There is no comparison between this and what Victor puts out solo. The strongest part to this album was Gregg Bissonette (the drumer) For all of you BASS Hounds out there save your money and buy something Vic put out solo !

Wooten and Bailey had recorded a wonderful cd which is a must for every bass player, they take the 4 strings and the 6 strings fretless and make unbelieveable sounds and rhythems... it has it all, funk, jazz, groove! buy it!

Can You Smell What George B is Cooking?.......2007-01-02

Fans of mid-to-late 60s' soul/funk/jazz fusion will enjoy this re-release, long overdue. I remember, when Benson achieved pop stardom in the mid-70s, cheapo record labels flooded the market with his earlier, more straight jazz releases, in an effort to cash in.

Turns out most of these records rocked! This is cool, effortless, feel-good jazz/soul fusion, lifted by George's fluid, speedy, harmonic guitar runs. Lonnie Smith's organ, of course, is essential to grooves of this type, and he does not disappoint.

I'm pleased to see this one finally see the light of day.

A continuation of "Its' Uptown"........2006-08-27

This was like "It's Uptown" (part two). He was using the space provided by his rhythm section to experiment almost in the same way that Charlie Parker did twenty years before.
Many people might not like the hip 60s funky soul/jazz groove but unfortunately THIS was the sound of the mid 60s, especially with regard to black music. George always did nod in the direction of the pop market even back in 1965..but then so did Grant Green, Pat Martino and Wes and many other jazz artists.
What one can't fail Benson for is not providing the goods. His solos are immaculate..now and again he may slip up but it just adds to the tension. He's testing the ground and you can hear the amount of progress he'd made since he'd started with Jack McDuff. His solos are more fluent, imaginative. He's got the ability to hammer-on notes from the 1st fret to the 24th in one fell swoop. Wow, he must've burnt ALOT of midnight oil.

Straight Ahead Jazz.......2006-07-01

Nothing fancy here, just 4-5 piece straight ahead jazz, no vocals, just jazz in 4-4 time with a superb back up band. If you like Wes Montgomery and Jimmie Smith with a nice sax, then you will love this CD.

This Album Was A Big Disappointment!.......2006-05-28

I like George Benson. I think he's a great jazz guitarist. However, this album fails to do anything but remind me of what a waste of tape this album was. It's way too commercial. It doesn't break any barriers or really has nothing to say musically that's interesting. He might have been a great jazz guitarist during this time, but his songwriting is awful. Nothing deep about this music. I also have to say that his improvisations on this album are totally cliche of jazz at that time. What a disappointing album. He should have titled this album "The George Benson Fake Book," because it's like Columbia hired a "fake" George Benson to come in and play guitar. George Benson has done some great albums, unfortunately, this isn't one of them.

Early George is Best.......2005-10-24

Wondering what is so great about George Benson's guitar playing? Check out his early cd's. This is one and "It's Uptown" is another. It is amazing that a guitar player this talented would end up a famous jazz SINGER.

"hallelujah" Includes Literally One Great Blues Song after Another in an Impressively Eclectic Set. "Cookbook" is a Collection of Canned Heat's Finest Recordings Up to that Point, Essentially a 'greatest Hits' from the Period. It features the Classic Canned Heat Lineup of Bob "The Bear" Hite, Al "Blind Owl" Wilson, Henry Vestine on Guitar, Bob Cook on Drums and Bassist Larry Taylor.

In the mid 60's, there was an explosion of blues based bands. Paul Butterfield, John Mayall,etc. and Canned Heat. The big difference was that Canned Heat hit the top 40.

Canned Heat was started by blues collector Bob "Bear" Hite and "Blind" Al Wilson. Both had spent their youth searching out old blues 78s and foraging through the American past to collect the music that would tell who were we were and who we could be. Canned Heat both shouted Past and Future blues.

The first album had mostly blues covers but with Bob Hites commanding vocals and Henry Vestine's guitar + Al Wilson's off center vocals made it well nearly obscure. The second album, "Boogie With Canned Heat" had a top 10 hit with "On The Road Again" and they played a date almost every night from SF to Germany.

"Hallejah" is the fourth album released by the Heat. After "Boogie", they released "Living the Blues", that had another top 10 hit, " Going Up the Country", again an Al Wilson vocal. But mostly, "Living the Blues" captilized on the long jam "Fried Hockey Boogie" that was a favorite concert piece that was an FM favorite.

But! "Hallelujah" is a fine stand alone album with such Heat favorites as " Time Was", "Same All Over" and the great '60's anthem "Sic' Em Pigs". By this time, though, Canned Heat seemed to be obligated to do an extented "Boogie". Only lovers of retread will be happy with that kicked tire.
This CD`has also the first greatest hits complipation released on LP, " Cookbook". It does not have later songs like, "Work Together", etc.. but it does have the advantage of not sucking out loud like every other Canned Heat CD. + the quality is so much better that no other release compares.

synthetic cuteness.......2006-10-11

This discoid consists of cute, kitschy interpretations of classic rock songs from the 60s-70's. Without getting into specifics, they spice it up by dropping solos in from the songs of other bands (organ/synth). Anyway, this is fun stuff, and if you like this, please check out Devo's E-Z Listening Disc, very muzak-y versions of their songs (Come Back Jonee and Space Junk are the best in my opinion) and the Exotica 2000 cd by the late great Korla Pandit. All are worth the price.

deconstructive musical comedy .......2006-01-05

Forget The Producers and Grease! You want musical comedy, then give this a listen. Subjecting a series of classic rock era tunes to a synthesizer based reworking, the Moog Cookbook - Brian Kehew and Jellyfish/Imperial Drag's Roger Joseph Manning Jr. - is a band dedicated to hilarious deconstruction. Using moog sythnthesizers, here they cook up a series of versions of well known rock hits, and in many instances, actually improve the original; while I could care less if I ever heard Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4 or Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever again, these versions breathe much new life into these songs. Their version, too, of Kiss's showstopper Rock and Roll All Night goes places that Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley could not possibly have ever imagined. However, while the Moog Cookbook have tongues firmly planted in cheeks, this is not merely an exercise in cheaps laughs. Intead, these renditions are really enjoyable to listen to as music. If you like bands like the Residents and/or music by techno artists like Daft Punk, you'll probably like this a lot.

0wns the originals.......2005-12-21

My feelings for the originals ranged from love to hate. I love the original "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Ziggy Stardust" while I hated classics like "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Rock N' Roll All Night".

The Moog Cookbook breathed new life into my beloved classics and it made me love their renditions of those that I hated. Not only is it a novel album, but it is always fun to listen and dance to. For me, it has not grown old in the years that I have owned it.

When you play it for your friends, make them guess each song. That is the best way to be introduced to the Moog Cookbook.

Hilarious! Had me laughing out loud........2004-10-01

I love all of the little whirs and blips that the Moog synthesizer makes but there isn't a lot of really fun music out there that uses the Moog. Maybe a couple of Perrey/Kingsley records and the Hot Butter album but that was about it. Until these guys hit the scene. It was a great idea to take songs that we are all very familiar with and reinterpret them via the Moog. This allows you to appreciate every little bleep and bloop as you listen to the songs. Some of the interpretations here are just downright brilliant. Favorites are Born to be Wild and Sweet Home Alabama. I still chuckle when I hear the little computerized voice say "Turn it up!" at the beginning of the latter.
To me the Moog's many sound effects stimulate the same pleasure centers that a Las Vegas slot machine does. It just feels good to listen. One word of warning though. This stuff is hilarious but should be digested in small doses. It's a novelty record and is not meant to be listened to over and over. So break it out every once in a while and let it bring a smile to your face!

The Worst Album Ever? (Real rating - Zero Stars).......2004-08-10

If there is a musical afterlife, Moog Cookbook will occupy the lowest level of hell. They will look up at the likes of Ace of Base, The Moldy Peaches, Great White, Richard Marx, and Wesley Willis, each of them singularly terrible artists, and know that covering the likes of "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Sweet Home Alabama" with a cheap Casio synth is what delivered them directly to the music equivalent of the river Styx. (Not to be confused with the band, Styx, which undoubtedly will have to answer for the dreck it recorded during its far-too-lenghthy career.

The Clean Version Rocks!.......2006-06-13

This cd rocks! Despite Timbaland not producing as much, the cd still has some great songs. My favorite are Lose Control and On and On.

Let me start off by saying this... I love Missy. I always have. But there is no excuse for this CD's poor quality.

I loved every Missy CD, until now.

I read reviews on Amazon, and most of them were extremely positive. So, despite my despising of the lead single, "Lose Control", which is absolute trash, I bought this CD.

The beginning of the CD is alright. "Joy" is pretty enjoyable. "Partytime" is too. But then it just gets awful. "Irresistible Delicious" is such an unorganized, uninspired mess, sampling songs with no creativity, which can be said about many of the album's tracks. ("Lose Control", "My Struggles", etc.)

There are some songs on here that are tolerable, like "Bad Man" and "On & On", which definitely should've been the first single. But most of this is just filler.

Due to the failure of This Is Not A Test, which I thought was excellent, Missy decided to take a risk and kick Timbaland to the curb. (He produces only 2 tracks.) Instead of Timbaland, she turns to the producers of the minute. (Rich Harisson, Neptunes, Scott Storch...) But this risk doesn't pay off at all. All of these top notch producers are giving Missy their worst material to date. (Rich Harisson, go back to R&B!)

And although many people will disagree, I think the majority of Missy rhyming on this CD is wack. She tries way too hard to be gansta.("Mommy", "Click Clack") What happened to the Missy that claimed that rap didn't have to be all hard and ghetto, it could be fun. Well, there are no fun rhymes on this one, unlike Under Construction.

The R&B tracks at the end are only half cooked and aren't too original.

But luckily for Elliott, this CD ends well with a successful try at reggaeton, with guest star M.I.A., who tears up the track. ("Bad Man") It also has a hilarious interlude at the end.

It has a good beginning, and end. But the middle of this book has some weak recipes.

I Have The Clean Version and It Rocks the Same.......2005-07-08

The clean version of The Cookbook has just as much fire as the explicit version. There are a few "S" words slurred up as well as a few other choice words but you won't be missing much!

The Cookbook is Missy's greatest album since "Miss-E So Addictive." In many ways it's her best album ever. It's consistent, easy to listen to. By easy to listen to, their aren't many jarring super-futuristic or off the meter tracks. Missy and Mike Jones open up the album with "Joy." The song "Party Time" proves Missy is still feeling 1980's hip-hop. This is further evident on the track "Irresistible Delicious" She resurrected Slick Rick's career with this song. Not only does it feature a sample from his 1988 hit "Lick The Balls," Slick Rick offers up some new rhymes along with Missy. Yes, Slick is a legend but when was the last time he appeared on a bonofide smash hit? This is a great song and it's followed up by the high energy "Lose Control," which is the first single from The Cookbook. This song features Ciara and Fatman Scoop. It's really a good song but not the best song on the album. It really is a great high energy song. Slick Rick isn't the only old school artist to make an appearance on The Cookbook, Grand Puba appears on the track "My Struggles," and Mary J. Blige sounds funkier than she has in quite some time on this track. Another stand out old school influenced track on the album is "Click Clack." Fantasia and Missy make beautiful music on "My Man." The album is really great and it may prove to be Missy's greatest album ever.

This is clean so you can blast it in the car w/o parents giving you dirty looks.

It's always better when it's edited.

I really don't see a difference in the wholesome goodness of the beat.

Missy still rokz no matr what but I like it w/o the f-word as much and I don't want to get n 2 trouble for having the n-word in my muzik. (yikez)
