Marvellous!.......2005-11-26
I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.
The best violinist ever!.......2001-01-26
All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

Fine Beethoven Chamber Works.......2007-07-12
These CDs are discs 3 & 4 of the complete piano trios of Beethoven. They were recorded from 1979 to 1984, and remastered and re-issued on EMI classics in 2004; I am surprised that this is the first review posted on Amazon.
The major works on these CDs are the later trios, opus 70 no 1, "Ghost", opus 70 no 2, and opus 97,"Archduke", dedicated to Beethoven's friend, pupil and benefactor the Archduke Rudfolf. This, opus 97, is probably the best trio sonata, but some of Schubert's come close. These later trios are more interesting as the cello is a full member of the group, no longer restricted to tagging along with the left hand of the pianist.
The players are Vladimir Ashkenazy on piano, Itzhak Perlman on violin and Lynn Harrell on cello. The first two are big names from the 1980s, and Harrell is a first class player, if much less well known. So you would expect a first class performance, and that's what you get. Ashkenazy leads but never dominates, the performace is light and airy, precise, often delicate, and joyful. It's the best "Archduke" I have heard, and that is the one you will come back to time
When you consider the budget price it has to get 5 stars.

Amazon.com essential recording
When Jazzie B and his Bristol crew released this debut--which was called Keep on Movin' in the U.S., after its first hit--in 1989, at the height of twice-a-second dance beats, it was a landmark event in the club music scene. They slowed down their rhythms and brought in subtle, soulful vocals (mostly from Caron Wheeler); more intriguingly, they structured the disc like a club DJ set. Some songs, such as the giddy "Fairplay," were presented straight, but others appeared only as almost-instrumental dub or as a groove with toasting-influenced spiels by Jazzie or (in the case of the smash "Back to Life") a cappella. This reissue expands the original with some B-sides, alternate versions, and the fully orchestrated single version of "Back to Life," as well as a superfluous drum & bass remix of "Keep on Movin.'" --Douglas Wolk
Album Description
Special edition of the hit English urban/ house group's 'best of' in a digipak with six bonus tracks added, 'Ambition' (Rap), 'Keep On Movin'' (Big Beat Accapella), 'Back To Life' (However Do You Want Me), 'Jazzie's Groove' (Piano Version), 'Back To Life' (One World Remix) and 'Keep On Movin'' (M Beat Bonus Mix). 16 tracks total. 1999 release.
Customer Reviews:
CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THIS ONE.......2007-02-02
i love this right here because what was not on the original album is on this one. my neck tingles from the mems of first hearing it. the one that stands out for me though is not what you think!!!!! for me, it was thast piano part of JAZZY'S GROOVE. just that part DA-DUN-DUH-DUH-DUH-NUH drives me absolutely INSANE!!!! of course, there is KEEP ON MOVIN', BACK TO LIFE, ARE YOU READY, and FEELING FREE that gets me levitated. look here, if you like them grooves that take you somewhere else in their own way, then you will dig this one here.
Great CD!!!.......2006-11-05
British soul at its best. It introduced Caron Wheeler who went solo shortly after this CD came out. The songs on this CD still sound good to this day. Although the remixes are not necessary, it is a great addition to the CD. The CD is definitely a classic. Buy it now!!!
Their Most Remarkable Album to Date !.......2002-07-01
What a disappointment back in '89 when I first purchased the original cd to find that their biggest hit Back To Life was only an accapella version. You could only obtain the orchestrated video version if you purchased the maxi single cd or the single cassette ! Well, this club edition of the cd more than makes up for lost time. It makes me greatly appreciate what groundbreaking club, dub, and soulfully deep-bass music sounds like. This title is still fresh and unforgettable as the first time I heard it. With it's Jamaican, reggae-influenced grooves Soul II Soul was definitely a musical group that would later be greatly emulated or imitated by others (listen to the European group Enigma's smash 1990 instrumental hit Sadeness)! From the heartfelt and soulful vocals to the rich instrumentation this cd was the blueprint for later artists to be inspired by if not strongly influenced...
Good II Better.......2002-06-25
Ten years after its release, the fabulous debut from inflential Soul II Soul gets re-relased with three additional mixes. A fuse of r&b, reggae, African rhythms, and pure funk, Jazzie B's unique sound would be copied by several pale imitators. Yet, there was no denying the Real Thing. "Keep On Movin'," "Jazzie's Groove," and "Back to Life" sound just as vital as they did back in 1989. This album deservedly went platinum and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist (which they lost to, um, Milli Vanilli). However, the group began to sell less records with each subsequent release before they finally faded from the spotlight. But the power and influence of this straight-up classic still lives on. This disc comes highly recommended for both casual listeners and soul fanatics alike.
A Sure "Soul" Delight.......2002-02-11
It's hard to believe that after 13 years of its release, Soul II Soul's "Keep On Movin'" still stands as being one of the best recorded albums ever. Another one of U.K.'s finest brilliantly created a distinct sound in fusing melodic rhythms of Funk, R&B/Soul, Hip-Hop, and Dance. As a result, some of the biggest hits became staples on both R&B and Pop stations during '89 such as the infamous title track and the monstrous classic "Back to Life," both led by female vocalist extrodinaire Caron Wheeler. Another jam is the thunderous "Jazzie's Groove." Bonus treats are also added here for pure listening enjoyment. A sure gem to own.

Customer Reviews:
The Genesis.......2006-08-23
Great primer on the early days of instrumental rock. I had the cassette version years ago and the CD has additional tracks. Highly recommended
Woo hoo!.......2005-01-30
This is a great collection of instrumental rock and roll classics from the 1950s. Most of these songs were big hits, and the few that weren't hits should have been hits. This is just about the perfect compilation of '50s rock instrumentals. Anyway, I can't think of anything that they left out. Highly recommended.
History repeats itself.......2004-04-25
When I saw the song list for this CD I was blown away!
It looked exactly like a stack of 45's I remembered having
on my first record changer way back in pre-historic times.
So naturally, since half of them have been have been stolen,
broken, or played to death, I had to have this CD.
I was not disappointed. You won't be either, especially if you
want to hear what rock and roll was like besides the "big names".
The Rhino booklet that is included is very informative about the songs as well as the era.
Outstanding Collection.......2003-09-27
Someone has put together the most memorable instrumental classic rock tunes of the decade. The quality is excellent and, with a good sound system, you can rock your world like you never could in the 50's.
Why I bought it........2002-01-17
I bought because Volumes I and II because they contained some fabulous hits from my pre-teen and teenager days. At Amazon.com, I also did not have to buy the entire set of 5 volumes; like I would have to buy from another vendor.

fine early classics from The Nat King Cole Trio..........2007-08-02
This CD gives us a fine assortment of hits by The Nat King Cole Trio recorded between 1942 and 1946. The sound is great and from the very start of this album you can tell Nat was destined for great stardom.
The CD track set begins with "All For You;" this ballad showcases Nat's youthful voice as he croons a love ballad to his lover. The musical arrangement shines with great piano by Cole with Johnny Miller on bass and guitarist Oscar Moore. The piano playing during the musical interlude shows how Cole never missed a beat.
Cole, Moore and Miller harmonize to perfection on the next track, "Straighten Up And Fly Right." Nat's voice is recorded much more clearly on this number; and the peppy number also highlights Cole's talent as a tunesmith, too! The CD reverts to a slower love ballad with "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You." "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You" starts with a great piano solo and Nat sings this flawlessly. The melody charms and haunts you long after you listen to this track.
"Embraceable You" lets the trio infuse new life into a classic Gershwin tune; Nat croons this without a superfluous note. The musical arrangement plays softer than before in order to highlight Nat's vocals. I predict that you will enjoy "Embraceable You" very, very much.
"I'm A Shy Guy" is another tune written by Nat Cole; and the piano works well along with the bass and the guitar. The lyrics aren't as sophisticated as the lyrics for "Straighten Up And Fly Right;" and this is the probable reason why this tune didn't go as far as "Straighten Up And Fly Right." "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" again demonstrates just how well this trio could massage a classic love ballad and make it shine in their own special way.
"The Frim Fram Sauce" is one of my personal favorites: I love its playful nature and I can just imagine how good all that food must taste! SMILE "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66" is a very early example of Nat performing a song he loved to sing so frequently in his later solo career. Nat sings well and the musical arrangement bolsters "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66." "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" was one of the trio's bigger hits during this period; and it's no secret why. Nat delivers this passionately; and the arrangement never misses a beat.
The CD track set ends with "You're The Cream In My Coffee." The arrangement begins with a peppy start and when Nat comes in it's a heavenly number! This romantic ballad provides a strong ending for this album.
The liner notes give us a great essay about Nat and his trio; and you get the song credits and recording dates, too. The picture of the trio on the front cover reflects good judgment.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of Nat "King" Cole; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will treasure this CD for years to come.
Enjoy!
King Cole Trio, No Greater Small Jazz Band.......2006-03-04
"Vocal Classics, Volume 1" by the King Cole Trio documents along with "Instrumental Classics" that the Trio was always at its best. It is the equivalent of Ted Williams hitting .406 in 1941, Jim Brown gaining 6 yards a carry every time he touched the ball, Wilt Chamberlain averaging 50.4 points and 25.4 rebounds in 1961-1962 and Wayne Gretzky scoring over 200 points in four out of five seasons.
Most of these songs are great art. "All For You" could have been left off this CD album since it was recorded for Excelsior Records in 1942 before the Trio recorded for Capitol Records as well as "How Does It Feel" since it was never released commercially until 1991 when it was part of Mosaic Records box set entitled "The Complete Capitol Recordings of the King Cole Trio." Also the other version of "Embraceable You", which was released in 1944 on the first King Cole Trio album should have been included in lieu of the V-Disc version. A better version of "What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry" was the Trio's 1946 master that was actually commercially released in 1946 on "King Cole Trio, Volume 2" album. The 1945 version was not released the first time until 1955. Capitol Records would have served the fan better by issuing in this package 1946 recording rather the 1945. In my opinion "I Can't See For Lookin' " is more of a classic than "All For You," this version of "What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry" and "How Does It Feel" and should have been included instead. And certainly "The Christmas Song" by Robert Wells and Mel Torme recorded by the Trio in 1946 with a string choir is more of a classic than these three songs and should have been part of the release.
The greatest thing about this album is it exclusively consists of what Will Friedwald called the greatest edition of the King Cole Trio (Trio Leader Nat Cole at the piano and doing the vocals, Oscar Moore, guitar and Johnny Miller, bass). No other edition before Miller's arrival in 1942 and Moore's leaving in 1947 ever equalled what these three men accomplished. Other editions of the Trio pale in comparison. Moore as a guitarist and Miller as a bassist, besides being great jazz players, could also sing in tight harmony with Cole as you will hear on Cole's and Irving Mills' composition entitled "Straighten Up And Fly Right." It is unfortunate that two other classic vocals by all three men were not included in the album, Cole's "It Is Better To Be By Yourself" and Ella Fitzgerald's "Oh But I Do." Besides being a great pianist and vocalist, Cole was a phenomenal leader and arranger when he led the King Cole Trio. The inferior quality of "All For You," "What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry," and "How Does It Feel" is more than compensated by superior treatment that they provide on the other nineteen selections. It is due in no small measure to Cole's arranging skills. It is his talent as an arranger that makes this a classic album as it is also true of the "Instrumental Classics" album by the King Cole Trio.
I have been a fan of the King Cole Trio since 1963 when I was fourteen years old. Please enjoy this music by a band that was incomparable.

The Best of Nat King Cole Trio Volums 1&2.......2005-09-01
This is a mello, jazzy wonderful reminder of the muscial time period in which it originated and also a testament to the
enduring legacy of Nat Cole. This material is as pleasing today as I'm sure it was 50 years ago. A wonderful historical reminder of the time, but still fresh and entertaining.
Music to neck and drink Martinis by.......2003-10-09
Everything else has been said about this music that needs to be said - hard to be nostalgic for something you weren't around for (I'm only 26, for cryin' out loud) but good grief! The idea that this was some of the pop music enjoyed by millions - this elegant, sophisticated, intimate music - only underscores the aridity of all of the stuff that makes Billboard nowadays. Cole's
art was above all an art of subtely, of small touches that add up to a distinct and unmistakeable whole - much as the small, decisive brushstrokes of Monet yielded those iconic, idyllic rivers and bridges. Listen to how Cole phrases the penultimate line of "I'm Thru With Love" , that fractional hesitation, that delicate caesura between "For I must have you" and "or no one",
and you'll see what I mean. For a romantic evening indoors on a cold winter night, look no further than the Trio for exactly the right mood. (The instrumental stuff is equally fine too, by the way - he was an amazing piano player. Red Garland didn't come out of nowhere, you know.)
Silky Smooth.......2001-11-28
This is smooth jazz at its finest--not the contemporary non-jazz that usurped that name-- but the light, feathery, and unmistakably jazz work of early Nat Cole. Smooth as silk, really, he has a warm, easy-going, and mellifluous voice (yet it's never bland). While some of the songs are strictly for fun (the great "The Frim Fram Sauce" and the less memorable "But She's My Buddy's Chick") he adds a bit more gravitas to such ballads as "Sweet Lorraine" and lays blue shadings onto "Embraceable You."
The comping is wonderful, a classic trio sound with Johnny Miller's beautifully articulated bass, and Oscar Moore's versatile guitar. At times, Moore coaxes a ukulele sound out of his instrument; other times he has an incandescent sound that recalls Django Reinhardt. The trio also sings together: "Straighten Up and Fly Right " is like a Do-Wop jazz song. Cole's piano is the height of insouciance, a soft but always swinging style that gets the most out of the minimum. Other highlights include the signature "Route 66," "I'm Thru with Love," "Come to Baby, Do", and "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons."
This is not the "popular" (and over-produced, in my opinion) Cole of latter years ("Lazy Hazy Days of Summer," "Ramblin' Rose," etc.) but a man firmly rooted in jazz. It's been said by many that his later vocal success overshadows the innovations and influence he showed as a young pianist. (For instrumentals only, I recommend his "Penthouse Serenade"). This album gives you both Cole's voice and piano in the great Cole sans-drummer trio; an excellent selection of songs played by a master, backed with empathy and basking in warmth.

Awesome bedroom collection........2004-02-08
I am a great Teddy Pendergrass fan I have all of the cds and whatever dvd is available. For this particular cd it is truly one for the bedroom. Sexy, Sexy just for cuddling with your special someone. Purchase and you will not be sorry, light some candles and just listen and soothe your mind to the greatest voice that ever lived. Love you Teddy Pendergrass and the compilation is truly awesome and fantastic. This man can sing now doubt about it.
The Elektra years+2 ringers.......2004-01-31
It's hard to believe it took until 2004 for somebody to anthologize Teddy's stay at Elektra. After his auto accident, Pendergrass left Philadelphia International and signed with Elektra. 14 of the 16 songs on this CD are from that era and it covers the years 84-93. Rhino throws in 2 Philly years ringers: "Close The Door" and "Turn Off The Lights" to back up their title concept. Besides the R&B hits, this also covers some album tracks, and is a decent look at his Elektra stint. Some people say this era wasn't as strong as the Philly years, but there's enough great songs here like "Joy" and "You're My Choice Tonight" (the latter written and Produced by Luther Vandross), as well as his last R&B #1 as of 2004, "It Should've Been You", to refute that claim. There's also one song that stands with the 2 ringers here, "Love 4/2" that's as good as anything Teddy has ever recorded. The only weak link on this CD are the liner notes. A useless 5 page reminiscece by a Tracy H. New that offers no insight into Teddy's career or his Elektra years. If you have his Greatest Hits CD or the Anthology CD than this is a must have for your collection.

columbia classics Vol 1.......2005-04-08
I was born in 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvina. That was way before TV. I remember all these artists and the songs. When they were appearing in Pittsburgh or Wheeling West Virginia (The WWVA Jamboree) I would be right there in the front row. I loved the music when it was Hillbilly, then country western and than The Nashville Sound.
I am so thrilled you recorded all the greats on one CD. I love it and am so happy to be able to purchase it. PS -- I had all the 78rpm records, but over time they got lost. Thank you for putting them all on one CD.

A perfect Appalachian honeymoon soundtrack.......1999-01-25
We bought this - on cassette - in Washington DC on our first day of honeymoon in September 1997. Having flown from Northern Ireland, it provided us with the perfect honeymoon soundtrack as we drove from Washington to Nashville, along the Skyline drive, down through South West Virginia, across Eastern Kentucky to Berea, and down to Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. We are from an Ulster-Scots/Scotch-Irish background, and during those three weeks we fell in love with the land that our forebears had settled in so many centuries before, bringing thier fiddles and folk songs with them, creating what was the core of mountain old-time music and bluegrass. From the Carter Family right through, every song is a classic. You must buy this!
