Almost an accidental ensemble, Booker T. & the MGs came together for a functional reason--to play as the house band for Memphis's Stax Records. But organist Booker T. Jones and guitarist Steve Cropper found alchemy, transforming rhythm-section riffing into an art, slicing through air where listeners expected vocals and doing so with tremendous success on their first single, "Green Onions," which was later featured on the American Graffiti soundtrack. This three-CD set captures the quartet's core in plentiful doses, leading off with their 1961 first salvo and cruising through numerous attempts at remaking the soulful classic. But in tinkering with the "Green Onions" formula, the band found dozens of instrumental variations, much like later, all-instrumental genre straddlers like Medeski Martin & Wood. They also found countless hours of work, backing some of Memphis soul's most revered artists (think Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett) and defining a backbone sound of organ and guitar layered over the increasingly vital rhythms of bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn and original drummer Al Jackson. They played expansive minor-key soul, as "Ode to Billie Joe" and many other tunes here attest, and later in the 1960s went on to churn out charting hits and great albums alike. The second CD in this set captures some great moments, especially the segments from McLemore Avenue, the quartet's all-instrumental tune-for-tune riposte to Abbey Road. Later in the set you get Albert King on vocals for a gritty "Born Under a Bad Sign" and then Boz Scaggs and Neil Young fronting the quartet (with Steve Potts or Jim Keltner drumming in place of the long-ago murdered Jackson). This collection will leave you wanting more. --Andrew Bartlett

ONE ***H-U-G-E*** FLAW!!!.......2004-08-16
If you're a serious Booker T & the MGs fan you'll probably want to get this set BUT, because of ONE HUGE FLAW, it stands FAR from being definitive; THE TITLE TRACK IS THE WRONG TAKE!!! I cannot imagine how this could have happened. (And I can scarcely believe that I don't see this glaring flaw mentioned in any of the other reviews!) The bass line ---arguably the most definitive element of the song--- is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT, which makes it interesting from an oddities/rarities perspective, but... "Time Is Tight" is one of my favorite cuts from this band and one of the main reasons I bought this set. I'm a professional bassist and it's one of the first songs I learned to play, one of the songs that played a significant role in my most formative years; I know it intimately. What a HUGE let-down it was when I discovered that the famous version of the song was not included and, after dropping fifty bucks, I still had to go out and buy "The Very Best Of..." to scratch the itch! And, while I'm a it... I have a compilation from the late '60s that has many cuts missing from this set. I'd much prefer to have some of those, rather than the 'live stuff. So, in summary; Hard-core fans only... Those willing to buy additional CDs to fill out the collection.
Outstanding!.......2002-08-05
I had the Greatest Hits and Melting Pot albums way back when vinyl was king, and I decided to revisit the past and putchase this set as well as Melting Pot (the downloaded mp3's were just enough to get me hooked again). I wasn't disappointed. It's great from beginning to end, and the live version of Hang em High is fantastic. My only complaint is that the studio version of Time is Tight isn't the same one as on my old LP. No matter, it's all good. The book that comes with it is great for Booker T fanatics, packed with lots of history. A little pricey, but worth it
Timeless.......2002-04-01
The greatest drummer who ever lived, Al Jackson, Jr., the coolest, most persuasive bass player in the world, Donald "Duck" Dunn, the absolute superior guitar playing of the one and only Steve Cropper, and the special genius of organ/piano man and all round musical prodigy, Booker T. Jones made up a virtual "dream team" of music. Besides laying down perfectly tight, unbelievably soulful backdrops for some of the greatest artists of the 20th century, they recorded some of the best music ever made and in instrumental form to boot. This is a great box set. You get the hits from "Green Onions" to "Hip Hug-Her" to "Hang 'Em High" to the amazing "Melting Pot". You get great rarities like "Hole In the Wall" (originally released in '65 under the moniker The Packers), and the beautiful, superb "Meditation" (a Booker T. Jones masterpiece, as brilliant as anything ever done from Mozart to McCartney). And you hear the band's versatility on their remarkable range of covers. I wouldn't do much editing; however, I would replace a good bit of the pre-Dunn era material, except a few, like the great "Soul Dressing", with later outings. And one could argue that the entire Melting Pot album, along with the entire McLemore Avenue album merit greatest hits status. Also, soul fans will no doubt cringe at the sound of Neil Young whining his way through the Cropper penned "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". Why this was picked to finish the collection, still baffles me. All and all, though, a fine showcase for the greatest band of all time.
The best from the Best.......2001-07-31
I have grown up listening to Booker T and the MG's. My brother brought back a huge stereo from Thailand in the 60's (Vietnam War) with a collection of awesome soul records including Booker T. The sound from that stereo and the soul music pumping out of those speakers were about as close to heaven as a 6 year old could get. In 1967 I became a gigantic Booker T and the MG's fan and have been ever since. I own all the originals on LP's and have since collected them all on CD's. I thought I had heard it all available from them but this box collection proved I hadn't. It spans many years and has B-Sides from 45's which I don't have and live cuts as well. The box set is the best start or compliment to your existing great Booker T and or Stax/Memphis Soul collection.
Instrumental fans enjoy.......2001-02-18
I would actually give this set 4.5 stars. I have been waiting for a comprehensive collection from this band for a long time. The only reason I am not giving it five stars is the live cuts at the end of disc 3 with the exception of the Albert King numbers, are unnecessary. Especially since studio versions of some of these songs are already on the set. These songs are from the period after the band reformed WITHOUT Al Jackson, Jr. on drums. If live versions were selected they could have been chosen from the classic period. Rob Bowman and Bill Belmont would have been better served to add more studio rarites, either non-lp sides or unissued tracks. Ace currently has an excellent import cd entitled "Play The Hip Hits" which includes unissued and rare cover versions from their classic period only one of which "Fannie Mae" appears on this set. The liner notes inside that cd state that there are also unissued cuts written by the band still in the vaults. This being said "Time Is Tight" is an great box set. I have many box sets and I play this one more than most. I like the fact that the first disc concentrates on the period when the band was distributed by Atlantic. The second disc starts after this distribution deal had ended. The discs themselves contain most of their "hits" along with familiar covers and cool album tracks. However "Booker-Loo" & "Red Beans & Rice" were omitted from the "Greatest Hits" cd. These discs illustrate what a tight band that the MGs were. Steve Cropper is an excellent but underrated guitarist. Al Jackson Jr. is a steady and funky drummer. Donald "Duck" Dunn is an inventive bass player while Booker T. Jones is equally adept at organ or piano. It is easy to see why these musicians were/are in such demand to back their more famous contemporaries. In summary if you are a fan of instrumental music or funk/soul this is an essential purchase. It is also great music to play in the car while cruising.

The begining of a new direction ! ! !.......2006-05-17
I've held off reviewing SKIN TIGHT all these years beacuse at one time this was an album you could take for granted EVERYBODY having, and not only that, being able to cop a certain infectious bass line off of it to boot. One might even call the famous vamp from SKIN TIGHT the ghettoe version of CHOP STICKS.... you just had to know it... - - yet I'm surprised that there are some people these days who aren't quite down with the Player's, even though they paved the path for everything that came after - - including Prince and today's nu-soul.
First - - the concept - - hard core funk, but with a bit of everything thrown in... especially Jazz and Gospel harmony, and even touches of the pop/rock of the era - - and all this done with a distinct flavor of a new type of '70s soul- - There were also slow jams here and there, but slow not in the sense of sweet and lush (like Barry White and Issac Hayes) but NASTY and HARDCORE (complete with the latest and funkiest analogue synths of the era including plenty of MOOG, CLAVs and ARPS). . . That was the player's unique formula, and today its not something new, its THE RULE, and there is no doubt that when you see all the groups today who got their stuff from Cameo and Prince, you definitely have to be aware that THEY in turn got it from SUGAR and the Players.
SKIN TIGHT (recorded circa 1974) marks the begining of the FUNKY SLOW JAM and the Ohio's unique brand of Jived out Funk with a wicked Jazz edge... The PLAYER'S were also unique because even though they were doing ultra hard core funk along with their label mates P-FUNK on the WESTBOUND label, they were still quite underground when (like P-Funk) they jumped to Polydor - - even for a group who's tunes had a lot of pop and disco crossover appeal (the lyrics were mostly about the three Fs... the first two being fun and funk - - but I forget the third...)
When you listen to this album its great... a real journey - - it can be dance music, just as much as backround, dreaming or whatchamacallit making music, and you can follow the journey from begining to end... a lot is happening and there's a sound and production style hard edged yet smooth that no other group quite had - - For this reason, SKIN TIGHT is one of those albums that belongs in every true funk and soul collector's album - - and yes, bass players need to be studying that famous vamp one and again - - hard to believe almost 32 years later ! ! !
Now as for me and my favorite Polydor era OP albums, although SKIN TIGHT and FIRE set the precedent, actually HONEY and CONTRADICTION are my faves (Honey also being my favorite of their distinctly recognizable album covers !)
You can't forget Sugarfoot!.......2003-03-01
Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players put out a solo album in the 1980's...does anyone out there know where I can purchase it?
The Ohio Players: Tighter than ever!.......2002-12-28
The Ohio Players took a big step up to a new level of funkiness with 'Skin Tight'. Not only did they make a move to a new record label, they also put out what was one of the best albums of 1974.
'Skin Tight' tapped into the jazz elements that were a big part of the Ohio Players' repertoire. This was the smoothest and funkiest album that the Players ever put out. Even though the Junie Morrison influence was missed, Billy Beck did a superb job not only with his keyboard work, but also with his fantastic range of falsetto singing (which he showcased on subsequent OP albums). 'Sugarfoot' Bonner put his indelible stamp on Funk music with his lead vocals on the title track. You can almost picture Larry Blackmon of Cameo and the lead singer of E.U. ("Doin' the Butt") listening intently to this record and taking notes. As far as ballads go, "Heaven Must Be Like This" ranks up there with the best. "Jive Turkey" is a hilarious Funk workout that'll have you singing along. "Streakin' Cheek To Cheek" is even Funkier. "It's Your Night" is a strip-you-down/sex-you-up ballad that's perfect for a candle-lit evening rendevous, and the piano rhapsody at the end of the song is breath-taking. The Players get downright churchified with the gospel-tinged "Is Anybody Gonna Be Saved?". Satch, Merv, and Pee-Wee's horn playing reached perfection on this LP, and Diamond was in rare form too. The underlying star of this album was bassist Marshall Jones. The bass-lines of "Skin Tight" were some of the best in R&B/Funk history. This was the closest that the Ohio Players came to putting out a genuine P-Funk album.
Definitely an appropriate title for this funky classic.......2001-09-03
1974 was an interesting year for R&B music. You had elder statesmen like Marvin Gaye & Stevie Wonder helping to expand the boundaries with their experiments into sex & synthesizers, respectively. Bands like Parliament-Funkadelic & Earth, Wind & Fire were just beginning to get off the ground, while forefathers like Sly & The Family Stone and James Brown were seeing their better days far behind them. In the middle of all that came a band who had been playing the music game for over 15 years, yet it wasn't until then did they finally break through: The Ohio Players.
That's right, the Players had been at it since the late 1950s when funk music didn't even exist (even James Brown was still recording ballads at the time). By the early 1970s, with R&B music starting to take more & more risks, the Players decided to adapt accordingly & it paid off with them finally finding wide success.
Starting with their 1971 album PAIN, the Players immediately won a reputation for their hot cover art, usually being so S&M-inspired, that many music stores refused to carry the album. Albums like PLEASURE, ECSTASY, CLIMAX & ORGASM continued the tradition, but the hits came at a slower rate. Finally, "Funky Worm" became a left-field hit in 1973 & the Players left their original record label Westbound Records for the bigger Mercury Records. Their first album for the new company was 1974's SKIN TIGHT.
By this time, the covers had been cleaned up a bit, but were no less sexy. The music inside was just as hot, but SKIN TIGHT was different in the fact that it relied mostly on smooth grooves than a funky edge. Even the hit title track was a bit more polished than say "Fire" or "Love Rollercoaster" (those hits would came later), but it still had a danceable feel.
The title for the song & album was appropriate: SKIN, in the fact that most Players albums were written & played almost exclusively by the band themselves. Any sound was made by them, pretty much, and there were indeed 8 people credited with writing a song. How's that for democracy? TIGHT, for obvious reasons because the music was tight & groovy without being stuffy, just loose enough to make it sound effortless. Even the album's other major hit "Jive Turkey" was mellower than most of the Players' more famous output, but still just as dancefloor-ready.
Elsewhere, SKIN TIGHT is mostly about slower songs like the oh-so-jazzy "Heaven Must Be Like This" & "It's Your Night/Words Of Love". Because the Players' biggest hits were loud, screaming funk epics, it's often overlooked that they could create some good ballads, too. With the above songs, they create some great bedroom music that oozes sexuality from every pore. If you don't get turned on by this music, then how do you expect Viagra to work any better? The closest things to truly uptempo songs on SKIN TIGHT are the pulsating "Streakin' Cheek To Cheek" (remember that college trend from back in the day?) & the closing social awareness of "Is Anybody Gonna Be Saved?".
On the surface, six songs may not seem like a truly entertaining album, but the songs all clock in at over 5 minutes, so you certainly couldn't fit any more on there. Nevertheless, SKIN TIGHT showed that the Ohio Players were well on their way to mainstream success & also thanks to toning down their cover art, their music was about to get more attention, which it should have had all along.

Moloko is far too distinctive for easy comparison, though the duo's blend of deep electrofunk groove, club beats, and hip absurdist vocals--along with a brightly colored retrofuturism (Moloko is, after all, a reference to A Clockwork Orange)--comes closest to Deee-Lite. By flashing a truly loopy attitude with songs as fresh and thrilling as they are catchy, Moloko makes Tight Sweater one of the best debuts of the year--no matter if it is 1995 (its actual year of release in the group's native U.K.) or 1997. --Roni Sarig

Well, first of all, when it comes to Moloko, you need not classify, but simply assign yourself to a special corner of your home and make sure your shoes are of comfort because your feet will disclose from your body and it'll be all a blur in the morning but I assure you, it will not hurt, on the contrary, it will do you unbelievable good. Then, you can go back to organizing whatever it was you wanted to categorize.
Gee, That Sweater Sure Is Tight.......2006-12-08
Welcome to the world of creepshow funk, music filled with buttery veins of bass and gloomy back-murals of fun house soul. You'd never guess (if you didn't already know) that the spooky rhythms of this quirky album were slapped and crafted by a white European couple. In fact, the title -- "Do You Like My Tight Sweater?" -- is supposedly the pick-up line Murphy used when she first met Brydon at a party in Sheffield.
That's the sort of fun you're dealing with here, and the songs are also thrumming with the dark, risky trebles of uncertain affection, too, in keeping with the fact that it was recorded at the start of their romantic and professional unions. Although the songs are infused with the same gleeful experimentation and shadowy flirtations that those kinds of beginnings suggest, there is none of the hesitation and uncertainty you might expect. This might be their debut album, but it sounds like the seasoned work of a couple of people who've already been around the block a few times.
The lyrics are mostly senseless. The rhyme schemes are fluffed and tweaked to hang like dark curtains around a dark, chewy center. The very first track, "Fun For Me," is fun for everyone, an in-your-face inside joke that everyone can get. "Lotus Eaters" features prominently a wickedly creepy industrial backdrop, tickled with strange phantom screams and a repetitive synth-twisted whining voice that sounds like it would be annoying and is anything but. "Party Weirdo" is a spiritually trippy track that sounds exactly like a name like "Party Weirdo" would suggest it sounds. "Ho Humm" makes excellent use of deep undercurrents of sexy (kinda sweaty) soul; and if you listen carefully, those spine-tingling electro-screams are still present.
This album is a great and new kind of funky (okay, well, "new" to those who've never heard them before) that is both vibrant and vicious, fun and frightening, catchy and creepy-crawly. It's not for everyone -- the album thrives on melodies and tones that are as electronic as they are soul-funky -- but I dare say it IS for most. "Do You Like My Tight Sweater?" Well, Moloko, it's hard not to.
Moloko.......2006-11-11
I was first intorduced to Moloko through the iTunes store. I bought and downloaded the album, and when I listened to it I couldn't believe my ears. Moloko is one of the most unique and delightful bands I have ever heard of. Their off-beat rythyms and quirky lyrics compine with trip-hopish and jazzy rythms to create a wonderfly dynamic and oddly seductive style of music that very few artists can achieve. The tracks range from up-beat and bouncy rytyms to slinking and seductive sounds and intriquing lyrics, together creating a completly unique, intriquing, and occasionally humerous work of art.

Find out my music taste by my favorite albums........enter now:
Marvin Gaye-Whats going on. Tom Waits-Nighthawks at the diner. Keith Jarret-Koln concert. Moloko-Do you like my tight sweater?.......End transmission.
Could you connect these? Neither could I, at first. But as it happenned almost ten years ago, these albums are still on my hi-fi every now and then....And Moloko album is by far an exception in this company....
Dance music that you could not dance.....fairy vocal of Mrs. Roisin...eccletic tune sculpturing...."do not eat this product" warning at the cover....
and verses "she slips, she slides, she don't know why she hide, dizzy little miss with a twinkle in her eye........"
I found that girl. I'm getting married.
Thank you.
Moloko: My Tight Sweater - Don't Buy It!!.......2006-01-19
I heard Moloko newest dance version of "Sing It Back" on the radio the other day (1/06) and HAD to have more. So I hit Amazon, read these reviews and bingo - I dropped $45 bucks for two of her CDs (this being one), both imports. Got them today and was INCREDIBLY disappointed. Yes, they are quirky, curious and fun in their own way, but NOTHING like her newest single - nada, zilch, zip. Very experimental, which I applaud, but a bit too experimental if you ask me, and of course I was expecting something way different from the reviews. In all honesty, between the two discs (32 songs total!), I MAYBE like ONE, and it is NOT the original "Sing It Back". SAVE YOUR MONEY and buy them USED if at all. Really...trust me.

I don't know how else to say this. The album is so good. Every track just tears it up old school UGK style. If you enjoy UGK and haven't heard this, then this is an absolute must. Five stars. Period.
Slammin' Cuts Str8 Outta Texas .......2006-03-22
Pimp C and Bun B came out in 1994 with an album with nothin but fire. This album slams from start to finish with that old school down south feel. The beats are melodic G-Funk, with twangy guitar and smokin keyborad riffs. Lyrically and vocally, UGK kills in all departments. They really know how to tear up the mic with their firey flows. The track "Feds in Town" is a gangster classic with a phat, funky beat and tight scratches. "Super Tight..." is the perfect one to pop in the six fo while hittin switches down the avenue. The mid 90's was one of the best periods in rap history, and this album is testament to it. Don't sleep on this classic.

I love this CD!.......2006-03-20
This music is full of life. Each tune is personal and sung from the heart-- To top it off, not only are all of the lyrics and tunes good, these women are talented-- they can sing-- funny thing is, they don't seem like "musicians", more like some weird sisters, singing tunes for their own pleasure and we just get to listen in. They can even put slightest grin into a word (you know they gotta be smiling through some of the pointy haired boss lyrics). There are some songs that are pure fun (pointy haired boss), some with a lively tune and humor. "My Karma broke down" is classic, a message, but nothing heavy, just fun. "Like their feet had wings" got my toe tapping and me singing and wanting to join in! "All the boys" is another fun one. Then, the a capella "Hymn", "Drawing down the moon", "May queen" express much of the pagan path. "New Forest" is a true gem. The title of my review says it all, I love this CD.
Clever and Funny and Toe-Tapping.......2006-03-13
What a joy to listen to! I liked Rite the First Time enough to try this second album, and am glad I did. It's very upbeat and fun to sing along with - especially the Karma song and the Pointy-Haired Boss (has Scott Adams heard this?). Great Pagan songs, too. Thanks, Three Weird Sisters.
Even Better Than Rite!.......2005-11-23
Three Weird Sisters have gotten even better! "Draw Down the Moon" is a perfect circle song. "Least of My Kind" is chilling and works even better than "In a Gown Too Blue" on the first album. "What My Granny Taught Me" is pagan gardening at it's best. "My Karma Broke Down" is a rollicking spiritual trip. "Like Their Feet Have Wings" is a happy fairy song that doesn't make me want to heave.:-) There are a few songs I don't care for, which costs a star, but on the whole I recommend Hair of the Frog highly. Buy it!
The Three Weird Sisters did it again! Fantastic!.......2004-09-20
I have been anxiously awaiting this second cd for months now. And it was well worth the wait. Hair of the Frog has the same rich vocal harmonies that I fell in love with in Rite the First Time, wrapped around the smart, touching, and witty lyrics that are a Three Weird Sisters hallmark. The Three Weird Sisters are eclectic, Celtic acoustic folk music at its best. What a joy to listen to...over and over and over again.
The best kept secret in modern acoustic music.......2004-09-14
A fine follow-up to their strikingly original debut CD "Rite the First Time", Three Weird Sisters' "Hair of the Frog" expands the boundaries of their eclectic Celtic-acoustic style. As in their first effort, the sound is defined by lush vocal harmonies, witty and thoughtful lyrics, and inventive melodies. Although this CD is not possessed of a jaw-dropping epic like "In A Gown Too Blue" (from the first CD), overall it is a more balanced and mature work. The Sisters have shown they can master the difficult balancing act of remaining true to their core sound while evolving as artists. Standout tracks include the achingly beautiful ballad "Pole Star", a gritty exposition of Cat Faber's werewolf anthem "Least of My Kind", the soaring a capella gospel choir of "Hymn", the layered vocal harmonies of "New Forest", and a luminous cover of the Janis Ian/Cheryl Wheeler classic "Orbiting Jupiter". Also noteworthy is the sparkling production quality of producer/engineer and former "Kansas" keyboardist Greg Robert. If you have the first CD, you know what all the buzz is about. This sophomore outing does not disappoint.

highly infectious blues! good time party, excellent talents!.......2007-07-24
I dont really think people should mention SNL because this has absolutely nothing to do with it! this is a jammin rockin blues cd, great remakes of great classics done by 2 guys who you can tell know their music. akroyd/belushi are really great at this, not like some celebs who try to dabble in music as a side thing, when i put this cd in there is no way i can stop without listening to the entire thing, its a good time guaranteed everytime!!!!!!!

Don't waste your precious time on Earth listening to these guys recycling great old tunes.
Seek the originals, or at least, the definitive early versions.

somewhat original.......2004-12-24
I've always got a kick out of the blues brothers and I would recommend this cd to both snl fans and lovers of classic r&b/blues & rock......Having read some of the other reviews, I would like to point out a fallacy. This is NOT mostly original. There are some original tunes but over half are cover versions. In fact, nine of the thirteen songs are covers. I listed them below with the original recording artists-
Have Love, Will Travel-Richard Berry (of Louie Loiue fame)
Dig Myself A Hole-Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup
Time Won't Let Me-The Outsiders
Polk Salad Annie-Tony Joe White
300 Pounds Of Joy-Howlin Wolf
All She Wants To Do Is Rock-Wynonie Harris
Greenbacks-Ray Charles
Swinging Party-Lowell Fulsom
Driving Wheel-Roosevelt Sykes
Aykroyd & Belushi never tried to take credit for songs performed as the Blues Brothers and I don't think they would do so now.
True Identities Revealed.......2004-07-17
For 20+ years, Dan Aykroyd (an avid blues fan) has been performing the music he loved under the persona of Elwood Blues, one half of the now legendary "Blues Brothers" mystique. Thanks to the movies, it's been hard for Aykroyd to shed those glasses and hat and simply perform the music he loves AS Dan Aykroyd.
This album finally gives him the chance to perform as himself. Although teamed with one-time "Blues Brothers" singing mate, Jim Belushi (filling the shoes of Aykroyd's late partner, John Belushi), don't expect this to be another blues tribute album. For the first time, these two men (who have definitely blossomed as singers in their own right) have recorded a straight-forward studio album of modern blues songs, the majority of which are originals.
There is no gimmick on this album, simply two men singing, backed by a talented band (none of which were involved in the original Blues Brothers Band, by the way). As stated in other reviews, this is NOT a Blues Brothers recording. It IS a great blues project, however.
Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd are wonderful performers.......2004-03-08
I have gone to two of their CD signings and I got to met Dan Aykroyd. Jim, I met at a According To Jim taping. Songs from this CD was played on ATJ. The first season was "Cadillac Man", next season was "Have Love Will Travel" and "Can't Get Out Of It," and final this season they did "300 Pounds of Joy" and "Time Won't Let Me." Since I have it I been playing it over and over. I am a big fan of both of them, and also I love the Blues Brothers. They also do a wonderful Blues Brothers show. Any fan should add this to their collection, I have and its great music. I have Jim's other CD called 36-22-36 and it's also a great one. Both CD's I recommend. Great Blues music.

Album Description
Foghat was an English rock group consisting of "Lonesome" Dave Peverett, Rod Price, Tony Stevens & Roger Earl. They had loads of top charting albums in the 70s & 80s on Bearsville Records. We now start a campaign to reissue their entire catalog in remastered versions. Tight Shoes originally reached # 40 on the Billboard charts in 1980.
Customer Reviews:
The beginning of the end of Foghat.......2007-05-22
Like so many other bands that really rocked in the late 70's but released wimpy music as the 80's began (and, thus, were never as popular as they had been), Foghat decided to change its music style and sound with "Tight Shoes", and it was a big mistake.
After issuing what I think are their two best albums -- "Live" and "Stone Blue" in the late 70's, Foghat was at its peak of popularity. Instead of building on it by continuing its brand of loud and kick-butt blues-style rock, they went "new wave" with this one. "Tight Shoes" contains very bland songs, nothing bluesy, and the production is very weak...guitars sound nothing like the way they used to on previous albums.
I bought this album when it first came out, expecting more of what they'd released before, but was thoroughly disappointed. Don't waste your money buying this, nor should you buy any of their other albums from the 80's.
Great band hitting a different stride.......2007-02-02
This is a great CD. As each new album was met with declining sales this was a great departure for the band. I love almost everything Foghat produced but particularly enjoyed Tight Shoes. Dave P took control of this project and kicked some serious butt, displaying the bands slow blues with a twist.
Little known album,kickin' band........2007-01-10
I used to have this release on both cassette and lp...kicked majorly then, kicks even moreso now with the remastered audio. The only gripe is,and it's very minor, that there are no bonus tracks (demos, single edits,ect.)-but that's a real minor gripe.

For the first time, we have a Brooks & Dunn album without a single song cowritten by the two singers. Moreover, the six songs written by Kix Brooks (three with Bob DiPiero) were coproduced by the duo and Don Cook, while the six written by Ronnie Dunn (five with Terry McBride) were coproduced by the duo and Byron Gallimore. It's almost as if this weren't a duo album but rather two solo albums scrambled together. This sharp division of labor may weaken the album in terms of consistency, but it frees Dunn to croon a pair of hard-country ballads--"Hurt Train" and "Too Far This Time"--and to prove once and for all that he's one of the finest honky-tonk singers of his generation. And when Dunn switches to country-pop on the catchy original "You'll Always Be Loved by Me" or on the inspired fiddle-and-steel remake of John Waite's 1984 rock hit "Missing You," the vocals retain that same emotional transparency and drawling resonance. As for Brooks, well, he's a great live entertainer. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Classic Brooks and Dunn.......2006-03-08
Have always enjoyed Brooks and Dunn. This CD has the song "You'll Always Be Loved by Me", one of my favorites.
American radio didn't like it but I do.......2005-01-13
Brooks and Dunn had been accustomed to success in a big way, with all their singles attaining high placings on the country charts - until the release of this album. For some reason, American country radio stations were less enthusiastic about the singles from this album. Only one of them (You'll always be loved by me, an outstanding ballad) made the top ten, with others such as Beer thirty (a great rocking country song) and Missing you (a cover of the John Waite pop classic) falling well short.
Clearly, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn were spending less time together, as they no longer co-wrote any songs together and they started using separate producers - Don Cook for Kix's songs and Byron Gallimore for Ronnie's songs. This may make for a less cohesive album but should not matter for a single released to radio. So it may just be that Kix and Ronnie did not make enough effort to promote the album via live appearances.
Whatever the reason for the failure of the singles (none of which made it to Greatest hits volume 2), this is an excellent album full of high quality music - great rocking songs and wonderful ballads. Apart from the tracks already mentioned, I particularly like Getting under getting over you (a great rocking song to open the album), Too far this time (a sad ballad), I love you more (a great ballad by Kix), All out of love (an original song, not a cover of the famous Air supply classic) and Texas and Norma Jean (a great story song by Kix), but I love the other songs too.
Kix and Ronnie must have learned why the singles from this album were comparative failures because they have resumed their successful ways with their next album, Steers and stripes, but although this may sometimes sound like a compilation of two solo albums, the music is of such quality that I love it anyway.
If you already have the two greatest hits collections (or the British compilation, Very best of), this is a great album to add to your collection, because none of the tracks here appear on those compilations. If you are building a collection of their original albums but don't have any of their compilations, I recommend starting with their first two albums - Brand new man and Hard working man. After that, the others are all of a consistently high quality including this one.
Tight Rope First Step in New Direction Awesome Album!!!.......2004-05-07
I am a serious Brooks & Dunn fan and Tight Rope is equal to, if not better than some of their other albums. This album was definately a change of pace from previous albums, but it is a stepping stone towards what Brooks & Dunn accomplished on "Steers & Stripes" and "Red Dirt Road". Its true that none of the songs were co-written by the duo, but they each bring some unique material to the table and they are both amazing song writers. Ronnie's voice is flawless as always, but Kix also steps it up on this album and I think that his songs are a nice contrast to Ronnie's. If given more opportunities I think some of Kix's songs could shine as singles, but he is willing to let Ronnie sing on songs that have a good chance of being hits.
Anyone out there who has liked Brooks & Dunn will enjoy this album. Ignore the critics and make up your own minds as to what is a good record and what isn't. If you don't own this album you need to buy it.
'Tight Rope' looses it's grip on most songs.......2003-08-27
I'm not saying that Brooks And Dunn made a bad album. 'Tight Rope', however, is their weakest one. Here, what is obvious, are more than enough songs having similar tempos.
'Missing You' has really gotten a good treatment from someone other than it's writer/original artist John Waite. The vocals are splendid from Dunn, with even a neat smooth echo of Brooks on the repeated lyrics.
'Beer Thirty' is really the true sole uppety one, and is a Honky Tonkin' time! A good diggin in the dirt of guitar and meaty bass, cut into a dance boogie that they're famous for.
Brooks takes the reigns on 'Can't Stop My Heart' and cuts above the average line for material and performance. Oh, he's pretty good here. Does better on their other albums.
'You'll Always Be Loved By Me' makes a good if not slightly drippy song, same going for the moderate 'Too Far This Time'.
Even though the album has some character, it doesn't have enough. Instead, we have a pretty long ride down a straight road. And character doesn't always mean fast or loud, or so slow. Just not always the same mood. If you got heartache, and need some songs to drive or cry away your tears, then this is ideal. At least most of them give you a shoulder to cry on.
Mediocre at best.......2003-07-21
This CD would not make them superstars - lackluster, boring.
...
Do yourself a favor, if you are a fan, buy a used one ..., just to have it in the collection.
