A whopping 24:49 minutes of music on this disc.......2007-05-18
This is about as bare bones as it gets folks. "The Best of Mel Carter" just has to be one of the stingiest offerings I have ever come across. And that's too bad because just about anything Mel Carter sings is a pleasure to listen to. Yes, you will find all of Mel's Hot 100 hits here including my personal favorite "Band of Gold" as well as his most popular single "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" which peaked at #8 back in June of '65. One of the main reasons I decided to purchase this disc was to finally get my hands on Mel's spendid version of the old Tommy Edwards hit "Love Is All We Need". I had not heard his version in over 40 years and I still contend that it is better than the original! While all 10 of the tunes on this disc are wonderful I particularly enjoyed Mel's take on the old Mario Lanza favorite "Be My Love". Why this one did not crack the Hot 100 I will never know. I also enjoyed a couple of other old favorites including "You You You" and "The More I See You". Because Mel Carter is such an incredible talent it is absolutely criminal that are least 4 or 5 more songs were not included here. "The Best of Mel Carter" includes no liner notes at all but does provide some minimal chart information. A two star package for a five star performer. Such a shame! I guess I'll round it off to four stars.
GO BIG RED!.......2007-05-11
This features a very popular classic song by a talented artist who hails from Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Hughes High School. GO BIG RED!
best of mel carter.......2006-11-22
This is a great cd.The song hold me,Thrill me,kiss me is a classic.
What a great voice this man has!.......2005-08-06
I had loved the song "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" for such a long time, but I never knew who the artist was. I asked numerous friends, but no one had a clue. Then thanks to Amazon, I found out the artist was Mel Carter. I bought this greatest hits CD just for this one beautiful song, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that all the other songs are just as good. Mel Carter's voice is superb. If you're a fan of Sam Cooke or Jackie Wilson, do yourself a favor and buy this CD.
Absolutly sensastional .......2004-11-25
I have heard a lot of music in my day, but to lisen to this man
sing, can literaly move your soul to such an extent that you truly feel what love realy is.
Thank you Mel Carter

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

It doesn't get any better than this........2006-01-31
For the last fourteen years of his career, Mel Torme recorded for Concord Records, the first studio to give him total creative control. In this two-CD set, issued in 1999 as a tribute and retrospective, Torme is at his peak, the selections here showing that he was perhaps the most musically talented male jazz singer of the century. Composer, arranger, gifted performer on many instruments, pop star, jazz icon, and cerebral musician who connected and performed with the greatest of jazz stars, Torme shows here why he was so highly respected by the best of the best in jazz.
His mellow sound, enormous range, and perfect pitch allow him use his voice as jazz instrumentalists do their instruments, and with George Shearing, who appears here on nine tracks, he was, perhaps, at his peak. Shearing himself refers to their "two bodies, of one musical mind," and on "Born to be Blue," which Torme wrote, Shearing's piano "tinkles" in the background and then breaks into a blues, jazz, and swing solo, perfectly attuned to Torme's style. "Lullaby of Birdland," which Torme sings, surprisingly, as a ballad for half its length, gives Torme the chance to solo on one of Shearing's songs, and when he sings a quick scat in a 1:1 relation to Shearing's piano, it's a rare jazz moment.
Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass appear on several tracks, and Torme's scat is so close to one of the soft trumpets on "Don' Cha Go 'Way Mad" that it sounds as if there is a second vocal soloist for part of the song. Torme and Cleo Laine share two songs, "I'm Nothing Without You," and "After You've Gone," their voices blending perfectly. A master at combining several songs into medleys, Torme pays separate medley tributes here to Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald. One of the highlights, however, is the "New York, New York Medley," in which Shearing begins with the familiar 5-note piano intro to "New York, New York" and Torme enters singing totally different songs, as the 5-note piano phrase continues through "For Me and My Gal," "Mack the Knife," "Birth of the Blues," and several other songs.
With tracks chosen to showcase Torme's variety and jazz skill, this set has been compiled from both his studio and live recordings--ranging from slow ballads with simple accompaniments by John Campbell to triple-time showpieces with full orchestra. With exquisite timing, a relaxed demeanor, and a palpable joy in performing, Torme does it all, even better at seventy than he was at twenty-five. Mary Whipple
A retrospective of a force.......2005-06-24
Mel Torme was one of the most amazing singers who ever lived, and this album accentuates the point.
Torme was a senior citizen when he recorded for Concord, 1982-1996. The norm is for senior citizens to lose it somewhat by that age, as the voice becomes weaker and more wobbly and the singer has to reach deep down into his "bag of tricks" to compensate.
Until Torme had his major stroke that ended his career (and ultimately, his life), he never got there. He was as strong as a senior citizen as he was when he first hit national prominence as "the Velvet Fog."
I have some of the Concord albums from which this compilation is taken. While one might quibble over the choices of the particular selections, what cannot be quibbled over is the greatness of his catalogue.
In fact, I'd go so far as to say that during these years, 1982-1996, Mel Torme and Bobby McFerrin were the finest male jazz singers on the planet. Other contenders during this period were either underrecorded (Mark Murphy and Andy Bey, e.g.), barely getting started (Kurt Elling and Kevin Mahogany, e.g.) or truly past their prime (Sinatra and Bennett, e.g.).
And what a jazz singer he was! Listen to "Autumn Leaves", just for example. Who else would mix "Love Me Or Leave Me", "Yesterday When I Was Young", and a Bach fugue with this old chestnut? Torme was famous for doing this kind of thing all of the time.
Or listen to what Torme and his favorite and best accompanist, George Shearing (and author of the most insightful liner notes) do to "New York, New York"! I've never been a big fan of Torme's patter, but these two old pros had me laughing out loud at their wittiness and sheer genius.
Or listen to what Torme does to such songs as "Liza", "You're Driving Me Crazy" and "This Is a Lovely Way to Spend an Evening." Most jazz singers can sing a certain kind of style, or certain kind of song, but clearly not others. Torme could do it all. He even doesn't sound too bad on the old Jimmy Rushing blues, "Sent For You yesterday and Here You Come Today."
How can you go wrong with this? This is my 110th review for Ammy, and I believe I've reviewed more Mel Torme albums than that of any other artist. Why? Because as Frank Sinatra himself once said, "If I'm the 'Chairman of the Board', Torme owns the whole damn company!"
Right on, Blue Eyes. RC
A Vocal Master in his Prime.......2001-11-29
Mel put out some classic West Coast material in the 50s for Bethlehelm like the album "LuLu's back in Town". This is where he displayed some preludes to his trademark scattin'. But During 60s he was shackled by the commercial grips of Verve & Columbia. Therefore, he didn't have the opportunity to do much in the way of improvising like only he could. And man, what a voice.
Concord gave him more freedom during his tenure in the 80s & 90s and it's gloriously documented on this fine collection. Highlights of the first disc include the ballad "Stardust" and some stunning readings of "Just Friends" & "Don'cha Go'Way Mad" off the great Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass LP. "Sweet Georgia Brown" gets its shoes blown off.
There are alot of great live performances in this collection. Disc Two starts off with a smoking live reading of "Day In -Day out" and never lets up. The medley of "The Christmas Song & Autumn Leaves" leaves little doubt who wrote that holiday song. "Three Little Words" even gets a good workout and the set concludes with a very appropriately sequenced reading of "Stairway to the Stars".
Unlike some compilations, this collection flows seamlessly like a single album. Linear notes by George Shearing are honest and to the point. The sound quality is good for mostly circa 80s/early 90s digital recording, although this remastering boosted Mel's voice a little too much and the highs are little too bright. My only major gripe is with the packaging -- the CDs don't stay very well in the open and fold case, and the booklet keeps sliding out every time I open the case.
Mel Torme was not only a singer with a truly amazing sounding voice, he was a musician with impeccable skill & knowledge. You may consider his style and the material he covered too conservative, but there is no denying his talent. Jazz singers today, traditional or progressive, can only dream of combining these traits.
This is the best of Mel's best.......2001-11-27
This is by far my favorite Mel Torme CD. I've always been a Torme fan and this CD spotlights his top songs. His singing is supported by big bands, small groups and many others by George Shearing. The New York medley will really blow you away. If you like Mel, buy this right now.
Velvet Perfection.......2000-05-29
I confess that until I heard this compilation, I thought that the best years of Mel Torme were behind him by the 1980s. But this collection changed my perception entirely. Not only could Mel still croon like nobody's business, but he could still scat like he had been taking lessons from Ella earlier that day. These CDs really do contain definitive versions of Lullaby of Birdland, a killer anything-but New York, New York medley, and a Christmas Song/Autumn Leaves track with the Frank Wess Orchestra. George Shearing is present on about half the tracks, and is just superb throughout. But the best part of all is that there really aren't any duds here. The pacing, in particular, is magnificent; the sound quality is superb; and the live performances are wonderfully intimate. If you are already a Mel Torme fan, you will want this collection because it is a wonderful final chapter to a monumental musical career. On the other hand, if you are just learning about Mel Torme, then you will definitely want to buy this collection because, hey, if this stuff doesn't get you hooked on Mel, nothing will.

Customer Reviews:
Th This is really great!.......2002-08-21
Mel scores again after all these years with his pure, smooth vocal qualities, and a stellar cast of musicians supporting a fabulous collection of country music's best. What more can be said about a man, a legend, an entertainer known hands down as one of the greatest performers in country music. Mel Tillis could stutter a raging storm in the sea into a warm, breezy, lazy afternoon. The man makes you smile. No matter how you slice it, this man takes the cake every time a song has been recorded. Listen closely to the fin'ese of the musical arrangements, you can never be disappointed with the time you spend listening, only coming away with a sense of reward and satisfaction. Belle Glade Florida sure knows how to grow, no, not the alligators, but the Tillis Clan. I'll b bet you that he could win a st stuttering contest anyday, handsdown, the same way he has with the collection on this album. More Please!

The missing years of a onetime country legend.......2004-02-20
It's funny: looking at all those old Webb Pierce albums, I always imagined he and Mel Tillis were best buds, collaborating together on those rock-influenced honkytonk shuffles, along with Webb's songwriting secret weapons, Wayne P. Walker. Turns out, though, that Tillis was one of those woebegotten Nashville second-stringers whose work Webb would poach at will, rushing out his own versions of other people's songs (with the full weight of the Decca Records publicity machine behind him), and locking down the chart hit before the original artist's single could gather any steam.
For Mel Tillis, it was definitely a double-edged sword -- Pierce's version of "I'm Tired" (poached from Ray Price) established Tillis as a popular songwriter, but Webb's subsequent preemptions put a stranglehold on Tillis's early hopes at a career as a star. If Webb always had a hit with the songs, how could Mel establish himself as a performer? This disc captures the drama of these formative early years, recording for Don Law and the folks at Columbia... Tillis tried tossing a lot of stuff at the wall, to see what would stick, there are plenty of teenpop tunes, penned for the Elvis Presley/Ricky Nelson crowd, adapted folk tunes, and even a few "historical" tunes, ala Johnny Horton and Claude King... But it's the honkytonk numbers that really stand out: Tillis's own versions of songs such as "No Love Have I," "Heart Over Mind" and "Tupelo County Jail" (which all show an interesting stylistic debt to George Jones...) Mel's singles mostly flopped, and it would be several years before he'd start to have hits, over on the Kapp label, and later on MGM... Still, his early work sounds fun today... This is a nice historical set, and a must-have for Tillis fans!

Album Description
He was the voice of many of our favorite cartoon characters. He was Mel Blanc, the greatest voiceover artist the world has ever known, and here, on one 25-track CD, are the "looney tunes" and "merrie melodies"âhe cut for Capitol from 1948 to 1957. Label luminaries like Billy May, Mickey Katz, Lou Busch, Dave Cavanaugh, Lou Bring and Van Alexander provide accompaniment, and, of course, the cast of characters is large (what we wouldn't do to have been present at these sessions)! Liner notes reveal the brilliant man behind the voices.

MEL BLANC MUSIC.......2007-01-09
If you really enjoy loony toons cartoons with Mel Blanc voices, you may enjoy this cd very much. We were actually only looking for the one song...The Hat I Got For Christmas Is Too Big...but after listening to the whole album we enjoyed it very much.
What do you think his name is? Melvin!.......2006-08-16
Mel Blanc was best known for doing the voices of literally hundreds of cartoon characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Woody Woodpecker, Yosemite Sam, Barney Rubble and many more. But he also made dozens of novelty records. He actually had hits with "Woody Woodpecker", "Toot, Toot, Toosie" and "I Taut I Taw a Puddy Tat". This CD features 25 of his novelty records. Most of the songs here are good, but some of my favorites are missing. I really wish this CD included "Big Bear Lake", "K-K-K-Katy", "Ten Little Bottles" and "Daffy Duck's Rhapsody". There would have been room for them if they hadn't included so many Christmas songs. Four Christmas songs is a bit too many for a non-Christmas CD, one would have been plenty.
