On his second "solo" album, this stand-up comic and character actor proves himself to be not just a foul-mouthed everyman and an unrepentant geek, but a rather awesome wordsmith as well. That a comedian might rant about how "Cirque du Soleil is like catnip for old people" or the ridiculous unhealthiness of a popular item at the fast food chain KFC is not surprising. That he'd call the fast food item "a failure pile in a sadness bowl" is, let's face it, pure poetry (and really, actually funny the way he tells it). On the track "I Tell a Story About Birth Control and Deal with a Retarded Heckler," Patton displays some of the finest manipulation of a disturbing audience member you'll ever hear. That the album was released by Sub Pop makes perfect sense, as Patton not only has Catholic music tastes--tossing off references to Hasil Adkins, the Pixies, Minor Threat, and Roky Erickson--but as we all know, stand-up is "the new grunge." --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
Patton has been a stand-up comedian for almost twenty years and this is his second CD. Lazy...or maybe busy. He's appeared in over twenty movies, including "Magnolia", "Reno 911!: Miami", and the documentary "The Comedians Of Comedy", which he also created and produced. He played Spence on "The King Of Queens" for nine seasons, is a regular on "Reno 911!", a frequent guest on Conan and Jimmy Kimmel, and a recurring voice actor on "Kim Possible", "SpongeBob SquarePants", "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", and "Crank Yankers". He's a regular columnist in the NY Times Magazine and was an uncredited writer on the "Borat" movie. He's also the lead voice in this summer's Pixar movie, "Ratatouille", playing a rat named Remy. This is his first CD on Sub Pop and it includes a DVD with one hour of stand-up.
Customer Reviews:
More great stuff from Patton.......2007-08-01
To me, Patton Oswalt is the funniest comedian around right now. He can be really goofy one second and be intelligent and political the next, but he's always funny and never comes off as preachy. It seems like some comedians these days are just really cynical and can't laugh at themselves and it makes their stuff hard to listen to. Thankfully, Oswalt avoids that kind of stuff. I'm really not describing his act very well, but that probably doesn't matter too much because I'm guessing you're already familiar with his stuff if you're reading this.
If you liked Patton's earlier stuff then this CD will not let you down. I don't think it's quite as good as Feelin' Kinda Patton, but it's still pretty great. Most of the bits on here are pretty short, which is good because none of them go on longer than they should. Definitely a comedy CD you'll want to listen to a few times (which is pretty rare with comedy albums) and turn friends onto. The DVD is a nice bonus and contains a stand up act with different versions of the jokes on the CD.
My favorite tracks: America Has Spoken, Clean Filth, At Midnight I Will Kill George Lucas with a Shovel, and Death Bed.
I'm Gonna Fill Your Hoo Haa with Goof Juice!.......2007-07-20
If you're a fan of Patton, this material is just as strong and cutting as "feelin' kinda patton." What's great about this release is that there is also a DVD that has a set from Atlanta's 40-watt along with some other footage of Patton just riffing on different topics.
His takes on different political and social issues is fresh and witty. He's brutally honest and insightful and he's evolved into one of the premier stand-up acts working today. There's always a sense of humanity in his act and that's what makes Patton's appeal so broad. He might be saying something that is mostly cynical but it's always tempered with his kind disposition and witty outlook on life. Beyond all of that, he's an incredible comedy writer and his material on this release is masterfully constructed and his delivery is just as sharp.
I laughed, I cried, I bought some for friends! Funny times ten to the X........2007-07-17
I am a Patton fan and I was expecting to be amused. However, I got more laugh-out-loud moments from this CD than I have from any recent comedy CD. There isn't a bad routine. For me, the gems are "Death Bed" and "Physics for Poets". However, I can say I honestly laughed with every track.
I like the inclusion of the DVD as it allows you to watch the genesis of the material. Patton is a distinct physical presence and that adds to the humor.
My husband rarely finds any stand-up comedy funny. However, as I was playing the CD I saw tears of laughter streaming down his face durng "Physics for Poets". It's that good.
His best stuff yet........2007-07-14
Patton is just getting better and better. Absurd without being wacky. Smart without being pretentious. Political without being preachy.
This is his best album yet. Buy it.
Immediately.
Extremely Funny.......2007-07-13
Patton Oswalt is extremely funny. Not just a little funny - EXTREMELY funny. His material is intelligent & unforgettable and this CD is worth every penny.

In April 2007, Dave Mathews and Tim Reynolds embarked on a 3 city theatre tour, culminating with a performance in the intimate confines of Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Due to the small sized venues and extremely limited number of dates, tickets were practically impossible to get, making these new 2 CD and 2 DVD sets all the more desirable to the huge Dave Matthews band fanbase.

Funny, funny, funny.......2007-06-27
If you love comedy you need this CD. Rodney Carrington is one of the funniest comedians today. I also purchased his DVD "Rodney Carrington: Live at the Majestic". This DVD is his "King of the Mountain" album but the fact that you actually see him acting out the show makes it that much funnier. My favorite part is the "Chicken Song". If you get the DVD (which I highly recommend) it will keep you laughing long after you see it. Trust me you will want to watch it over and over again......... I know I did.
Another Good Collection.......2007-06-19
This is another entertaining collection of countrified humor from a man who mostly has one thing on his mind; that is the thing that most men have on their minds. He is self deprecating and usually funny. That's enough for me.
Rodney is also known for his songs. These are usually scattered throughout his albums but in this one, they are all concentrated at the end. First come the live performances and then there are some repeats using studio recordings.
Its not a bad collection
Absolutely hilarious!!! .......2007-06-11
This is one of the funniest CD's and/or albums I have ever listened to. I heard these live on tour but, I still laugh like crazy. Also, Angel Friend is a very touching tribute to his good friend and fellow comedian Barry Martin. The song actually brought me through a very bad time and gave me hope when I lost my best friend.
Funniest Man In Comedy!.......2007-06-05
I've watched this dvd 5 times already and could watch it 10 more...you will laugh the whole time its on!
Rodney almost does it again........2007-05-21
This was really funny, but I don't think it was quite as funny as his earlier stuff.

After the sort of year that Kenny Chesney has experienced--from a whirlwind courtship through a short-lived marriage--a guy needs some time to chill. Thus it's no surprise that The Road and the Radio finds the party-hearty country hunk in an uncommonly introspective mood. The soul-searching title track establishes the album's intimacy and theme of taking stock, sustained through the bittersweet balladry of "Who You'd Be Today," "In a Small Town," "Freedom," and "Like Me." Though Chesney only wrote one track here, "Beer in Mexico," he invests the rest with personal conviction. Even the comparatively hard-rocking "Living in Fast Forward" has a reflective twist to it, while the Caribbean lilt of "Tequila Loves Me" has more than a measure of melancholy. Whatever the effects of romantic travails on his personal life, his music has gained some emotional depth. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
I like Kenny Chesney..........2007-06-17
...but what the hell is the point of putting out an album when you didn't even write the songs? It's a ridiculous concept. This is someone else's heart and soul, not Kenny Chesney's. The only one he wrote has the word "beer" in the title. What an artist!
Best Kenny Chesney CD!!!.......2007-05-28
There are more Kenny Chesney hit songs on this CD. I can listen to this CD over and over. My favorite is "Who You'd Be Today." It reminds me of my friend's son who's helicopter was shot down in Iraq in 2006. God bless Maj."Bubba" Worrell and God bless Kenny Chesney.
Road and Radio Tour.......2007-05-02
Here today im witing about kenny chesney Road and Radio Tour CD.I like listing to his music because his music is just so good to hear his good voice sing all his good songs. Last year i went to Freedom Hall and seen his Road and Radio Tour it was an awesome concert. He brings so much enery to the crouds at the concert. That's why he's my favorite counrty music singer.
Great album.......2007-04-10
My husband, a new country music fan, loves Kenny Chesney, so I got him this for Christmas along with some others. He really likes it.
THere are slow songs, fast, happy, sad and all done in classic Kenny Chesney.
A good buy.
Welcome Back Kenny.......2007-03-16
I've been with Kenny since his early years and it's been alittle trying seeing him travel with Buffet, as i am not that huge a fan of his. But as soon as i popped this CD in my player it felt like the old Kenny again. "Livin' in Fast Forward" and "Summertime" although still about the summer, is much less like the beach senario songs he's set up recently and much more about relaxin and havin a good time. "Beer in Mexico" might be one of my favorite songs because of all the brass that's used, and "Somebody Take Me Home" is another favorite. It's so catchy and different. If you are new to Kenny, you should like this for his singles, but keep in mind that it isn't all beach songs. He's gone back and put a few more meaningful songs with messages on this one as he did in his early years. No matter what, Kenny rocks! Can't wait to see him AGAIN in August!

A great way to introduce yourself to Dane Cook........2007-08-01
Dane Cook is becoming more known by the second. Even if you hate him, you know him, but liking him is just so much more beneficial. His comedy is great, he is talented not only vocally but physically which is why i suggest picking up a DVD of his also with this CD.
Thought it would be funnier........2007-07-19
After seeing Dane Cook's Vicious Circle, and 312 reviews averaging 5 starts here on Amazon, I expected this CD/DVD to be funnier. Dane is funny, and some parts were stomach hurting funny, but all in all, I expected more. After listening to the CD, I watched the unedited Comedy Central Special on the DVD and was disappointed that most of the material was the same as on the CD.
Dane Cook is a Legend.......2007-07-04
Dane Cook is the best young comedian in the World today. I have seen him Live in Dublin, where he blew Denis Learys reputation to shreds and have listened to his Cd's many times. Just buy them both, he delivers solid comedy performances, no more promotion required, this guy is the real deal.
I'm really puzzled by the volume of 5-star reviews here..........2007-07-03
I generally find myself agreeing with the reviewing majority on comedy albums, but I just don't get the over-the-top adulation of Dane Cook--at least as evidenced by this album. I listened to this album again, to make sure my initial reaction wasn't a fluke, and I found the material and delivery to be very average. Upon reflection, the problem with this album is that the delivery doesn't match the material. Much of his comedy consists of Seinfled-like observations, yet his delivery is usually manic and profanity-laden, providing way too much emphasis on a very small bit of humor.
Some of the bits are funny--I particularly liked the segment on the Satanic voice emanating from the old Speak 'n Spell--but I found him to spend much of his time ranting and swearing over things that weren't all that creative or funny. Sorry to go against the pack on this one, but for the life of me I can't understand why 90% of the reviewers could give this album five stars. (For whatever it's worth, comics I do like include early George Carlin, Robin Williams, Mitch Hedberg, Woody Allen, Steve Martin, Bill Cosby and the Sklar Brothers.)
AN EXCELLENT SET ! THE DVD HAS SOME OF HIS BEST STUFF!.......2007-06-24
I am a long time fan of Dane Cook. Before he became so popular,he was a little known comic with a fresh quirkyness about him. He is no Carlin or Pryor, but the guy is funny in a goofy kind of way! This CD/DVD combo is a great deal for some very funny sets.

Album Description
This comic has a seemingly endless supply of endearingly off-kilter one liners and an over-active imagination. He's one of the most unique voices in comedy today and has written for/performed on Conan O'Brien, Letterman, and Carson Daly. He's the latest correspondent on The Daily Show with his critiques on pop culture. In 2003, he taped his first stand-up special, "Comedy Central Presents Demetri Martin" which remains one of the highest rated half hours on the network. This release puts all his best material on one CD. The DVD compiles the Comedy Central Presents and a bunch of other secret stuff.
Customer Reviews:
Demetri is a top-notch comic.......2007-07-07
What a breath of fresh air. Demetri is zany, intelligent and highly observant of the world the rest of us take for granted. Topic after topic will find you nodding in agreement as you laugh yourself silly.
Would have been 5 stars but I don't like the songs........2007-05-22
Demetri Martin is a comedic genius. That being said, this cd had some wasted space at the end where three songs tie up time that could have been spent telling more hilarious jokes. His delivery and style are very similar to that of Steven Wright and Mitch Hedberg but with quite a bit more energy. Plus, he is likes to set his jokes to weird music. For some reason it works. Not only that, but on one track he has Will Forte of SNL fame come out and accompany him for a set of jokes. Will just sings random notes and tones between jokes and for some reason it is one of the funniest things I have ever heard. Check it out for that track alone!
Rip off of Hedberg.......2007-05-14
Material, delivery, style - all ripped from Mitch Hedberg. I could list a joke-by-joke comparison but I won't. Is this CD funny? For the most part - yes. Would I recommend this CD if I wasn't a huge fan of Hedberg's work? Yeah. I feel guilty laughing at this album because it is such a clone piece.
Enjoy Martin's work on the Daily Show. Root for his movie deals and applaud his acting. The comedic value of this album belongs to Mitch Hedberg and its a shame that more people don't see through this CD.
If you like...........2007-05-10
Steven Wright and Mitch Hedberg then you will love this guy. Very clever, witty humor and at times a bit random. I've played this one into the ground and I laugh out loud every time. It never stops being funny. The "Personal Information Waltz" gets me everytime. Will Forte's guest appearance is side-splittingly hilarious. Skip the intro and "The Grapes Song" and this album is a perfect listen. Great jokes you'll be repeating around the water cooler at work, so to speak.
"I used to compete in sports a lot... but then I realized you can buy trophies. Now I'm good at everything."
Demetri Rocks.......2007-05-10
Demetri Martin is halarious. If you have seen him on SNL or Comedy Central and liked him, you should definitely buy his CD. It also comes with a bonus DVD that includes his first major Comedy Central appearance along with a few treats for his fans. "These Are Jokes" never gets old--I still listen to my CD on long trips or whenever I am down. I hope he comes out with a new CD soon; this guy is good.

So...funny..........2007-08-02
I listened to this CD while on a four day drive. I hate driving but the miles flew by. It may or may not have been a good idea to listen to it though, my husband said I was swerving from laughing so hard.
Humor for the whole family.......2007-07-26
Having come of age in the 80s, I still list Sam Kinison as my favorite comedian. Even so, now with a family of my own I welcome comedy that I don't have to hide from my daughters or cringe when they overhear. Brian Regan is just such a comedian. If you love comedy based on language (as opposed to stories, observations, etc.) then this album is also for you. And, as a bonus, your children can listen to it along with you, with the strongest word used on the CD being "hell."
Brian Regan Live.......2007-07-24
This is one funny man. If you should catch him live or tv special he is even better, because his facial expressions are the best with his jokes. To listen to the cd well you will have to find a bathroom it is just to funny.
Great clean comedy--Very funny.......2007-07-24
Not alot of clean stand up comedians out there but Brian Regan is clean and extremely funny. My family and I were laughing so hard we were crying. Highly recommend this CD to anyone that loves humor and finding humor in life. Regan does a great job of both.
You Don't Need To Think About It, Just Buy This CD.......2007-07-15
This is one of the most AWESOME comedy CDs EVER. I put it in and I was laughing so hard I couldn't catch my breath. Another reason it's great is it's completely clean, so anyone can listen to it. It is TOTALLY worth the money, so just buy it. You won't be sorry.

All hail the return of novelty music's reigning king! Straight Outta Lynwood easily bests 2003's Poodle Hat and shows that Yankovic does know what he does best. Part of the secret to Weird Al's success is that he's never been very weird at all, and very rarely are his satires in any way "biting"--or even satires, really. The 11-minute parody of R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" is funny at least for the first listen, but it's hard to ridicule something so largely ridiculous in the first place (plus Jimmy Kimmel totally got the jump on him). The best thing Mr. Yankovic has always done is to take some decent pop tune, change a word or phrase, invent an entirely new premise for the tune, and make an inspired video to go along with it. He does that several times here; Green Day's "American Idiot" becomes the hockey-obsessed "Canadian Idiot," and "White & Nerdy" is a truly inspired take on Chamillionaire's "Ridin'." That song (and video, included here on the dual-disc CD/DVD) is breakneck-paced and so funny it's a disservice to quote from it at all. "Polkarama!" is a return to W.A.'s novelty roots: a handful of mildly dated hit songs (50 Cent to Modest Mouse!) delivered in straight-ahead, sped-up polka style. It's toe-tapping and sweet. Hopefully we'll not have to wait three years for another Weird Al record. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:
I almost died laughing........2007-06-28
I listened to this album for the first time tonight. Eleven years ago tonight, a friend got us tickets to a Weird Al concert. While driving home from the concert, we had a car accident and he died. After the first verse of "I'll Sue Ya," I seriously wondered if I might die laughing and join him!
I'll go through track by track:
White and Nerdy: Funny, I've heard this before so it didn't seem as new, but as a computer programmer I got a lot of good laughs. And I do hand-code HTML4!
Pancreas: Another novelty artist named Mindless Drug Hoover released a song with the same name and a similar concept. I wondered if by some weird hand of Eris, Weird Al had done the same song, but nope! He did something even more insane, even tying in things like gravity.
Canadian Idiot: I don't listen to much pop music, so haven't heard the originals, but another fun song making fun of racism. Everyone bags on Canadians anyway. One note: Weird Al even parodies the war.
I'll Sue Ya: Okay, here we go, definitely a favorite song. As said, after the first verse I wondered if I would join my friend, and if I could even handle a second verse! I did leave Earthlink, because I became dissatisfied with their tech support, so that struck a chord. Everyone has had issues with Verizon. And don't even mention New Jersey! I see this listed as an original song, but it sounds like a song done in the style of Rage against the Machine. Perfect! I really enjoy it when he doesn't parody a song per se, but parodies a group or style. This has always brought out his creativity. Sadly, some of the ridiculous things he yells out have actually happened (a guy sued someone for breaking his ankle while robbing his place.) I love this song!
Polkarama: Another classic Polka tune. As said I don't listen to much popular music, so for me these Polka songs provide a good insulated way to absorb the dirtier music of this time. I'll stick with these versions!
Virus Alert: Another great computer song! The main part would make a great sound alert. It has one of those catchy melodies and concepts that will just stay in your head for days, especially the next time your antivirus software alerts you with a new update! Virus Alert! (You could, of course, just use Linux, but we'll save that for another rant.)
Confession Part III: I don't know if he parodied a song here, or simply parodied the style of the current music, but either way he did a hilarious job. Every guy will love the last spoken line of the song.
Weasel Stomping Day: A little silly song, not much to say, but have fun!
Close but No Cigar: Okay, now I have a confession to make. I downloaded this album on bittorrent, and this song didn't play, so I did not hear it. I feel doubly glad I bought the CD.
Do I Creep You Out: Okay, I've heard the original, but can't put my finger on it. In a silly way, I consider this a song from every guy to every girl!
Trapped in the Drive Thru: I've heard the original referenced, and saw the South Park episode, an can imagine the original. This song treks in at around eleven minutes, and it does sort of go on, fut for me, this just added to the theme of the song, a tedius hunger-driven trip to the drive thru.
Don't Download this Song: A great capper for the album. Doubly funny since my downloaded copy missed a track, as if to underscore the point. It reminds me of the South Park episode which covered this theme. Buy my CD so I can afford a diamond-studded swimming pool. Classic!
In summary, I love this album, and consider it one of his best. I know my friend would have loved it too! Through various events, I know Weird Al as a very compassionate human being, and in his own way, a visionary.
It will have you ROTFLOL........2007-06-24
I've been a fan of "Weird Al" Yankovic for 24 years now. After all these years, he's still as funny as ever (or perhaps my sense of humor hasn't matured since I was a teenager). If you are a fan of Al, you pretty much know what you're going to get on an album; about an equal number of parodies and original songs, plus a polka medley of recent hits. Hey, it's a proven formula, so why mess with it? This is a very funny album. "White & Nerdy" is probably the funniest song, but all of them are at least somewhat funny. Go and buy the CD like you know that you should.
"Weird Al" comes "Straight Outta Lynwood" and right onto the Billboard charts.......2007-06-10
I picked up this CD because "Weird Al" Yankovic is coming to town and I have tickets to go with my daughters (do not tell them, but we have seats in the front row, just left of center so I can hear with my one good ear). When I was a kid most of the records I had were Smothers Brothers records, I had a teacher who played Spike Jones songs for us, my father taped several Allan Sherman albums for us, and in college I discovered Dr. Demento and Tom Lehrer (not necessarily in that order). So I am a big fan of musical parodies and there can be no doubt that Yankovic is the Shakespeare of that peculiar little niche of the music business. I consider "The Saga Begins" to be his magnum opus and in looking at his body of work what is impressive is not only his longevity but the way his work has improved from those early days when it was just him on accordion and Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz banging on the accordion case.
It turns out that "Straight Outta Lynwood" is Yankovic's most successful album of all time and his most successful single with "White & Nerdy" making it all the way to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 ("Eat It" was his previous top single which made it to #12). I still think "Running With Scissors" is his best album, but I am definitely heartened to know Yankovic is going strong. With albums coming out every three or four years he appears to have found his stride. There is the obligatory polka medley and several new style parodies, with "Pancreas" (Brian Wilson), "I'll Sue Ya" (Rage Against the Machine), "Virus Alert" (Sparks), "Close But No Cigar" (Cake), and "Don't Download This Song" (fundraiser songs). The surprise is that I liked the style parodies more than I did the parodies of particular songs, which is obviously turning my "Weird Al" universe upside down.
My only problem with this album is clearly my personal problem because with the exception of "Canadian Idiot" I had to look at the liner notes to find out which songs were parodies and which were originals. The fact that I had not heard (or perhaps only not remembered) "White & Nerdy" is a parody of "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire (featuring Krayzie Bone) was received with jaw-dropping astonishment by my daughters. I am down to recognizing only three songs out of 14 in the album's pokla medley, "Polkarama!" ("Let's Get it Started," "Don't Cha," and "Pon de Replay"). I had forgotten that Taylor Hicks had done "Do I Make You Proud," but I do not think I am alone in that regard. But I had no idea "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" is based on a R. Kelly song, although I did recognize Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" when it popped up.
Flip over the CD and you get to the DVD, which has animated videos for all of the original songs, namely: "Don't Download This Song," "I'll Sue Ya," "Virus Alert," "Close But No Cigar," "Pancreas" and "Weasel Stomping Day." The videos for "White & Nerdy," "Do I Creep Your Out," "Canadian Idiot," and "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" are all for parodies and for some reason that justified exclusion (insert pout here). The videos are followed by a short documentary that simply shows Yankovic and his band recording some of the songs and paying testament to his attention to detail. You can also listen to the entire album with the lyrics as subtitles, each song accompanied by a photograph of Yankovic from infancy to young adulthood (his parents liked the triple image option). Finally, you can do the karaoke function and get the music and the lyrics so you can sing the songs yourself. Consequently, there are enough extras here to justify rounding up on the disc overall.
Concert Update: So last night "Weird Al" came to town and as I suspected they set up two rows in the orchestra pit for winners of radio contests for tickets (sigh). But during one of the songs (that does not appear on any of the albums) he came down in the audience. Al was singing to the women in the audience but when he was walking in front of it was all dads and kids, so he sang to my oldest daughter (she just got accepted into the Peace Corp to go do what she wants to do where she wants to do it so she is having a good week). We also picked up over a thousand dollars in "Weird Al" money. For the record, he does complete versions of five songs from this album (1, 3, 4, 5, 9), excerpts from three more (7, 10, 11), and one music video (8).
Loved it!!.......2007-05-29
I'll be the first to admit that some of these songs DID NOT catch on with me right away!! In fact at first I thought this would be the first Weird Al Album I bought that I would not enjoy very much.... I WAS WRONG!!! After a few listens these songs really grew on me!!
I loved "White and Nerdy" straight away (I am White and Nerdy accorging to my wife) and the song nails a few asects of the nerd culture that I perssonally have seen or experienced so it was quite a treat!
"Pancreas" is an AWESOME tribute to Brian Wilson and his style of music (if you are too young to know who Mr. Wilson is....listen to the beach boys and check out some of his own albums).
I also thought "Canadian Idiot" was great!! Being a Floridian and knowing a bunch of seasonal Canadians it was rather funny and hit home!!
Close But No Cigar was an excellent song that was an abvious style parody of CAKE. Loved the words to the song and the little flaws that made him break up with each gorgeous woman!!
I could list reasons for liking all the songs but I don't want to take up too much space!! Let me just say that you will love this album as long as you give it a chance!!
Don't forget to visit Weird Al's website and get the free parody "You're Pitiful" (parody of "You're Beautiful") which was originally going to be on the album but was tanked at the last minute do to record company lawyers.
One more thing. This album is a dual disc. One side plays as a DVD the other as a CD. This disc MAY NOT play in certain drives or DC players so just be careful!!
The videos were hilarious though!!
"That's not why I bought this album".......2007-05-26
I'm here to tell ya, there are a lot very good reasons to buy this album. But most of them are not why I bought this album.
Sure Al's parodies are all great fun, but that's not why I bought this album. Sure this whole album is fraught with hilarity, but that's not why a bought this album. I didn't even buy this album because of all the cool video's included. IT'S THE MUSIC, MAN. That's why I bought this album. Can this Al guy sing or what - even if he is a little weird. (Although, I'm not too sure about the weird part, but that's what Al keeps telling everyone so I'll go along with it.)
Case in point; So there I was, sitting in my mini van at a red light, jamming to the music, not really paying any attention to the lyrics, just enjoying the sounds the band and singers were putting out. With my head bobbin' to the beat and hands drumming on the steering wheel, I noticed an elderly lady in the car next to me looking my way. She seemed to have an air of disdain about her at seeing a gentleman of my years acting like some dang fool kid. That very moment is when my ears picked up on the words "I blew my nose and wiped it on your cat". The lyric caught me totally off guard and I spontaneously burst into laughter. Seeing that, the lady snapped her head forward, stomped on the accelerator and speed through the red light trying to get away from that dang fool (being myself) as fast as she could.
Well, I guess that probably isn't why you should by this album either, but I can tell ya... This double CD sure is a lot of fun and you will absolutely enjoy the music.

Their second album and first for Interscope is almost wholly brilliant. Like Mogwai, Sigur Ros and a dozen others, TVOTR excels at making slowly-evolving tunes with vaguely anthemic choruses and lots of loud-soft dynamics. Unlike virtually any of those other bands, TV on the Radio mix a genuine and actual songwriting ability with their knack for finding sounds that appear to be "new." This record is crisper-sounding and incorporates more dance-based elements, but it's essentially a pop album. While the lack of the free web-released "Dry Drunk Emperor, a tribute to President Bush, is initially a bummer, the album percolates with enough pre-apocalyptic tension to satisfy anyone. In a Prince-pitched falsetto, the group sings "I was a lover/ Before this war," While throughout, the combination of melody and invention is always pitch-perfect (well, except on "Province" and "Let the Devil In," those songs sort of suck.) People of Earth: please make this band into total superstars and buy several copies of their album: one for the car, another for the office, etc. What we really need in our popular music is more weirdness, and more truth. --Mike McGonigal

More like a 4.5!!.......2007-08-04
These guys get a price for arrangements and versatility. Enjoyable album that I consider a notch above Gnarls Barkley "St. Elsewhere" (which is also quite creative) which certainly should earn them a 4.5 stars for their creative talents. Good songs, entertaining and offer a "bang for the buck". These guys are a lot of fun to listen to and I enjoyed most of their lyrics and feel they are quite a decent addition to my music collection which seems to be growing by the day. I have my bank account to attest for that. It is becoming increasingly difficult to refrain from purchasing more and more music so whenever possible I like music that is HOT, simple as that. I always read reviews from other buyers before I even think about making a purchase (don't like the feeling of getting burned with a weak selection) and of course I go to Metacritic, AMG, etc and when I find something that on the average is considered by many a superior work that is when I zero in and probably buy it. I only listen and buy Rock, Alternative, anything but jazz (on the words of the great Frank Zappa: "Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny") latin rock for sure (it is hard to believe how good some of this bands are:ex:Cafe Tacuba) salsa, world music, whatever kind of sound moves the soul, elicits a response from the emotional center for music is the great "mover and shaker" in my otherwise comfortable and predictable existance. TV on the Radio "Return to Cookie Mountain" is a welcome addition, pretty decent tunes and I seek for no more than that. Just want the best of what is out there in the Free World. 4.5 stars for a solid well worthy CD. Did I forget to thank all the good people who voice their valuable opinions? Thank you, thank you. Come to think of it I am going to light up and listen "Return to Cookie Mountain" again, but this time since it will be at home at loud volume. Go Go Go!!!!
Play it loud!.......2007-07-11
Start at the first track, with its unstoppable beat, WILD horn hook, and impassioned vocals. If you make it through that without 1) blowing your speakers, 2) hitting the repeat button, or 3) running in the opposite direction, the rest of the album will reward you. It takes a few listens to unfold, but once you "get it" you won't want to stop hearing it.
You see, I tried, then I REALLY tried.......2007-06-02
I have to completely agree with what "Unlistenable" (callahan) had to say about this record. I have given it a try on long road trips, blasting on my home stereo, with headphones, etc. I don't get it. I WANTED to "get it". Even after "not getting it", I tried again.
I had read/heard so much about this album, that I figured it would be a pleasure/treasure.
Basically, it sucks!. No cohesion whatsoever-none.
"Wolf Like Me" is the ONLY stand out track, likley because it actually has some form of melody/riff. It is a very, very good song to add to any compilation you may be making for your summer mix. Do yourself a favor, buy THAT track on ITunes and skip the rest! The ONE STAR RATING IS FOR THAT TRACK ALONE!
P.S. I disagree with that other reviewer's comment likening this to OK Computer as being overrated too. THAT disc has plenty of great musical moments going on!
Different but good..........2007-05-26
I gave this album a couple of listens and was glad I did. It's original but I am not someone who gives bad music a pass just because it is different - it has to be good too. I am a little surprised that "Wolf Like Me" was the first single since that song seems sort of flat and boring to me, but "I Was a Lover", "Hours" and "Let the Devil In"(which was one of the only songs the Amazon reviewer hated) were all very good. And I can't believe everyone isn't raving about "A Method" which to me is an incredible tune(was someone channeling Brian Wilson?) that's worth the price of the album all by itself.
Not pop music.......2007-05-13
This is a refreshing change from the garbage the music indusrty is feeding us today. Good stuff!

Though not their first-ever career survey, Rush's Spirit of Radio compilation is an ideal point of entry for newbie fans or anyone who consistently likes the Rush songs most often heard on commercial radio. While 1990's Chronicles set was more encompassing--including tracks beyond Spirit of Radio's '87 cut-off point--the Canadian prog-rock trio's benchmark moments are represented among these 16 songs. Hence the appearance of "Closer to the Heart," "Tom Sawyer," "New World Man," "Time Stand Still," "Fly by Night," "Subdivisions," and the title track. --Kim Hughes

The Spirit of Radio, the hits of Rush.......2007-02-02
Well, pretty self-explanatory here, A collection of Rush hits from 1974-1987.
Rush has three decades of music to sift through so with "The Spirit of Radio", it's a nice collection of hits from their earliest studio albums up to the late eighties.
I enjoyed the double CD set "Chronicles" that they released in 1990 which was also a nice hits package, but this is still something to savor. Old classics like "Working Man" are still as energetic a listen as when I first heard them, and the song I myself think of them the most by which is "Fly By Night" is on here as well. Jump to track three and you will experience the eclectic and timeless space overture known as "2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx" Syrinx clocks in at over six minutes long and has a lot of depth in musicianship and instrumental prowess. The ever poetic "Closer to the Heart" is a woeful and powerful single that is another gem on the album. "The Trees" is another classic that is a creative song with a lot of meaning and a killer guitar solo. "The spirit of Radio" is a pick me up and graciously stages Neal Peart's drum expertise at the forefront. "Freewill" is another old friend that is clever in its lyrics and has some dark tones to it amidst a range of great sounds and melodies. The emotional opening of "Limelight" takes you further on the journey of hits and is one of my favorites with Geddy Lee forging ahead with vocals that evoke various themes and thoughts.
Track nine is "Tom Sawyer", perhaps the most popular FM Radio hit the band had from the album "Moving Pictures". Along for the ride (no pun intended) from that album is also the Futuristic sci-fi theme of "Red Barchetta" which is about a boy in a strict government dominating future that has "car laws" and as you listen you experience the day he takes his uncles hidden car for a ride. The powerful anthem of "New World Man" glides in at track eleven and is one of the more ambient songs from the bands later material. "Subdivisions" is as dire as ever and has an intro that one cannot miss. The pop synergy of "Distant Early Warning" is on here as well, followed by another FM staple in the catchy track known as "The Big Money".
The album rounds out with the epic track "Force Ten" that is fast and fun, and although I was never a big fan of the song, still has enough staying power to definitely be included on here. The sonic "Time Stand Still" comes in as track sixteen and has some amazing changeups in tone. Heartfelt in the chorus, Time Stand Still is the perfect song to end this masterpiece collection with.
If you even "like" Rush, you should look into getting this album. Thirteen years of various songs that make for a sound and complete hits package for perhaps what could be called the "First Half" of the bands tenure. I wasn't sure at first about getting a CD like this of the bands material since I already had several studio albums from over the years, but I got this delivered today and definitely don't regret it now. They are one of the most innovative and artistic rock bands of the past thirty years, so how could you go wrong?
A comprehensive compilation.......2007-01-14
It has all the songs I was looking for. If you are a fan of Rush, this is actually a no brainer.
"Catch the spirit" of Rush! Good for beginners. .......2006-10-29
This is a fair representation of their work from 1974-87. Some fans may argue that there are some tracks not on here that should be. Never mind them. If your serious about buying some of their music this is as good a place to start as any.
What are you waiting for?! Pick it up, put it in and let it spin!!
HA!!! FED UP MAKES ME LAUGH!!!.......2006-10-26
please tell me that fed up guy is a joke. did he seriously give an nsync album 5 stars?!? that can't be real. no one actually LIKES nsync. anyway i don't think it needs further explanation. if u are into nsync then this album is probably not for you, if you on the other hand like authentic classic rock and perhaps one of the greatest things to ever come out of canada then this album is for you!
