The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

my opinion.......2007-08-01

This recording was reccomended somewhere as being even better than the newer version with Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming - it really is tops, I think. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is as lyrical as ever. And the other soloists are also breathtaking.

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

It doesn't matter how harmless, fun, and dumb it all might sound on first listen; most of what's on Get Over It is not going away anytime soon. The soundtrack jumps through many different genres to achieve its balance--whether it's the looped organ notes and monosyllabic chants of Fatboy Slim's "Sho' Nuff," the dance-floor disco mania of Basement Jaxx's "Bingo Bango," or the acoustic grunge and winning harmonies of American Hi-Fi's "Another Perfect Day." For novelty's sake, Vitamin C's notable rendition of "Love Will Keep Us Together" has been substituted for the Captain & Tennille's 1970s original. Elvis Costello's thorny 1977 ballad "Alison" still sounds shockingly recent. As an example of expert pacing, the addition of England's cult hero Badly Drawn Boy with the cello-based "The Shining" serves as a gentle counterpoint and intro to Caviar's propulsive "Goldmine." --Rob O'Connor

What a poor offering for such a good movie with a great soundtrack.
Where is Siquo's version of September? where is Vitamin C's version of "Love will Keep Us Together?
I'm entirely disappointed in this soundtrack.
But at least it has Kristen Dunst song from the play which is incredible, unfortunately, it is the only actual song from the entire movie.
Wait for it to come down to a reasonable price, like say $5 or better yet just buy the DVD and ignore this CD.

The film has got to be one of the funniest ever, i laugh harder each time i see it! it is just hilarious despite its cheesiness-that just makes it better! its a shame the soundtrack doesnt do it the justice it deserves, kirsten dunst's song makes me cringe a little when listened to while not watching the film. But 'Love Will Keep Us together' I still play in the car and sing at the top my lungs with it-its the best. I'll never fall in love again is another great song as well as Another Perfect Day and Allison but the rest are a bit boring. And not putting Sisqo's September on the soundtrack is purely Criminal-what were they thinking?? still, an ok soundtrack, but nothing compared to the film which is a sure 5 star rating!

after reading all the reviews, i noticed that no one really commented on how the writer/director took a 400-year-old shakespeare play and transformed it into a musical with a pop-like flavor. i think it was done very well; a little chessy, but chessy is good for teens. after reading a mid-summer nights dream in class, this movie would be fun to watch; ideal plot for teenagers!

the soundtrack is great, too. but i wish the september song was on there . . . but i got over it!

Another Feather in John Barry's Soundtrack Cap! the Master Produces Another Gem.

Excellent album from one of the very best.......2004-08-16

Firstly, a couple of moans about the packaging. I cannot see the
point of the slip cover. It contains nothing that is not on the
inserts. The CD will not fit into my storage racks with it on and so
it has been taken off and stored in a draw with others.

The slipcase and the inserts also contain at least one piece of
misinformation. According to Decca, Barry wrote 10 Bond scores when
in fact it is 11.A small point but it's as easy to get it right as
wrong.

Some have said, it would be fair to call this Beyondenss 2. The
idea of Barry using moments from his own life as inspiration is
continuued here together with a number of tracks which appear to be
directly inspired by John O'Donohue's book 'Eternal Echoes'.

Of the 11 tracks, two didn't work for me at first but grow on you with repeated listens.
These are 'Get Over It' and 'First Steps'. Somehow these tracks seem to lack the strong melody lines and emotional inspiration of the rest of the album.

The opening track 'Eternal Echoes' reminds me a little of 'Dances
with Wolves', with the synthesised choir and particularly the scene
where the Buffalo carcasses are seen spread over a plain ( can't
remember the name of the track). That for me is good, as IMO Dances
is one of Barry's finest and anything in that style will always play
well with me.

'Returning Home' is a wonderful track with a beautiful sax melody
laid over a glorious string backing. Would have made a good vocal had
appropriate lyrics been added. Was this inspired by Barry returning
home to Oyster Bay or does it come from earlier, perhaps returning to
his parents home in York after being away with JB7?

Crazy Dog, clearly inspired by his dog back at Oyster Bay and seen in
the Omnibus Documentary. A pleasing string melody reminds me a little
of 'Elsa at play' though taken at a slower pace. Wasn't too keen on
this intially but it grows big time!.

'Slow Day' is another wonderful track with Tommy Morgan's marvellous
playing of a strong Barry melody agin supported by a bed of strings
which is punctuated with a goldfingerish brass interlude.

On the Omnibus documentary this was seen being performed with a flute
solo by an attractive female member of the English Chamber Orchestra.
I really liked that version as well and it's a pity that we couldn't
have had 'Slow Day' parts 1 and 2' particularly as the vocal tracks
were abandoned.

'Fred and Cyd' is the track that many people seem to be raving about
and saying that Barry can break out of 'romantic mode'. It is a great
track. A lovely sax melody, which has the sharpeness and clarity of
early tracks such as 'Cutty Sark' is interspersed with another
stunningly good 'Goldfingerish' brass interlude. Is this inspired by
Fred Astaire and Cyd Charise who Barry must often have seen at the
Rialto in York.

Blessed Illusion would appear to be directly inspired by John
O'Donohue's book. Again, Barry presents a strong melody, initially
performed by solo trumpet and then taken up by strings though still
punctuated by brass figures. A more meditative track that gets better
with repeated listening.

'Lullabying', apparently inspired by the time soon after the birth
of Barry's son 'Jon Patrick' in the the mid 90s. I love this track.
The joy and love that Barry feels for his his son is expressed so
clearly and wonderfully by yet another knockout melody performrd by
flute and strings (I think). It's really very moving and possibly my
favourite track on the album. I suspect that one day Jon Patrick will
look back with a lot of pride at this wonderful track that he
inspired his Dad to write. This was used on the Omnibus documentary
for scenes of John and Jon Patrick fishing at Oyster Bay and over the
closing credits.

'Winning', not sure what inspired this one. Was it picking up the
Oscar for Dances after being ill for two years?. Whatever, it's yet
another
..... er.. winner!

Lovely initial string melody dissolves into glorious bridge. (As a
non musician it's difficult using words to describe music so I hope
you bear with me!!.)

'Get Over It', maybe inspired by the loss of his parents or elder
brother, I struggle with this one. It seems to lack the strength of
melody apparent elsewhere on the album. Reminds me of one two of the
later tracks on 'Beyondness'. Flute riff is taken up be strings.
Certainly not unpleasant and it may grow on me.

'First Steps' another track which doesn't seem to have the impact of
many others on this album. Again the melody is apparently not as
strong as several others. Really can't seem to get into this one.
Will stick with it, it may grow!

'Elegy' another track apprently inspired directly by the themes in
John O'Donohue's book.At 5.37, the longest track on the album.Used in
the Omnibus documentary when Barry is seen at work at Oyster Bay.
Very reflective and not one for the Hans Zimmer boys but this track
really works for me. So peaceful and beautiful with Barry yet again
producing a wonderful emotional melody.

It's a real pity that none of the vocals made it to the album.
Peronally I would have finished the album on an upbeat note as he did
with 'Beyondenss', possibly with 'Fred and Cyd' or 'Slow Day'. No
matter the album is here and is a great companion piece
to 'Beyondness'

Nine strong tracks out of eleven isn't a bad average. With 'Eternal
Echoes' and 'Enigma' John Barry shows that he is still at the top of
the tree and very much able to 'do the business'.

The bottom line is 'Eternal Echoes' contains long passages of really
lovely music that I will reguarly listen to.
EE is not Bond music but it deserves to be judged on it's own merits
and not against 60s Bond soundtracks.

Well worth buying!.

BARRY ECHOES ETERNALLY.......2003-09-05

John Barry's Eternal Echoes is a marvelous addition to any collection of his numerous soundtrack offerings.

My first exposure to Barry's music came with Out of Africa. It was shortly thereafter that I happened to be watching one of my favorite movies, The Lion in Winter and discovered that the soundtrack was composed by none other than John Barry.

Since then I have added a wide variety of Barry's music to my collection and find that Eternal Echoes is just what the title implies: brilliant echoing music of the sort that any John Barry fan would love.

Dispensable.......2002-12-20

The music on this CD is well recorded and makes very agreeable listening. There are, however, no outstanding melodies or themes. I would categorize what I heard as "sonic doodling." Quite frankly, I would not encourage anyone to purchase this album. Much superior choices would be John Barry's "Moviola" and "Moviola II."

Much of a film's success can be attributed to its fantastic score by John Barry. Brilliantly straddling the line between the demands of the onscreen action and the subtext, the music not only perfectly matches the film, but at times brings it to a new level. This new album by Mr. Barry ~ "Eternal Echoes", takes the listener to places with sounds that exist everywhere without you knowing it. According to legend the writings of a friend John O'Donahue inspired Barry to compose the selections that appear on this one-of-a-kind album. Like Barry's last album "The Beyondness of Things" (460-009-2), time stands still within a realm of subconscious dreamlike-passages into ones life.

Our legendary composer has crafted a brilliant movement of cues that innate cinematic illusions, thus capturing our thoughts and memories that seem to linger above with joy and sadness. Barry himself arranged and conducted the English Chamber Orchestra with his signature reflective style. The whole pace of this album is sedate with more of a mellow tone that will creep into your very musical soul. A good example of this is "SLOW DAY", featuring a solo by Tommy Morgan on harmonica , as the strumming of the orchestra blends into a counter-balance. The echoes of heavy brass resounding sends a message of triumphant appeal to all fans of this film music storyteller.

Much of Barry's score is variations of themes, sometimes touching on the visuals that only music can express. One such cue is "BLESSED ILLUSION", brass and strings create obsessive musical phrases tending to repeat themselves, very effective. One favorite of mine is "GET OVER IT", the opening chords have so much merit, completely a full bloom of the English Chamber Orchestra under the baton of John Barry is nothing less than spellbinding, the tempo and performance takes your breath away.

Believe this is one of the most important albums in Barry's career. Each cue is to be savored like a fine glass of wine, unforgettable compositions are within this rare gem of musicial genius. This is a must have, a keeper for all the fans of movie music and is a "film-score-buffs' delight, gotta love it.

John Barry's current state of mind.......2002-10-09

This album is a continuation of Barry's recent style heard in "The Beyondness of Things". It has that mellow easy listening quality that at first glance sounds repetitious of his recent work. Of his recent compositions, I would recommend "Playing by Heart". The classic Barry sound can also be heard in the recent recordings of "Last Valley" and "Robin and Marian". Finally, "Moviola" still stands out as an excellent compilation of his finest themes.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!

A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.

A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

Definative.......2005-07-23

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

William Bolcom is my kind of musician. He writes music that is sometimes adventurous but always based in a recognizable American idiom. And he's a terrific ragtime pianist, the best Joplin player I've heard. With these credentials, of course he's a wonderful Gershwin player. These are the best piano performances of Gershwin I know. After you hear those, Bolcom joins his wife Joan Morris for very flavorful versions of 10 George and Ira Gershwin songs. The whole disc is a delight, and the original analog recordings still sound fine. Highly recommended to all Gershwin lovers. --Leslie Gerber

Peculiar.......2005-01-26

I can see how someone might enjoy this album. William Bolcom is a top-flight pianist and the idea of playing the tunes as George Gershwin played them at parties is intriguing.

Because my ear is used to it, I guess, I would like to have heard longer performances of fewer songs. Each one sounded to me like a snippet -- over too soon. Because of that, plus the fact that I'm not a fan of Joan Morris' showy voice, I give the album one thumb up.

Gershwin Never Sounded Better!.......2002-06-25

This is a fantastic CD! Back in the 70's, pianist William Bolcom and his singer wife Joan Morris made a delightful series of albums on the Nonesuch label of old songs from the first half of the twentieth century - just glorious voice backed by brilliant piano. As Ira Gershwin might say - who could ask for anything more? The music is not only beautifully performed, you can hear the joy of the performance in every note. And Bolcom and Morris were never better than when doing Gershwin.

A combination of two albums, the first part of this CD is all piano. The Gershwin Songbook consists of brief (some under a minute) versions of some of his more popular songs in the way that Gershwin himself famously played them at parties. They demonstrate that Gershwin was as gifted a pianist as he was a composer. The other instrumental tracks are some of Gershwin's solo piano pieces, including the wonderful Rialto Ripples, a rag written when he was just seventeen. For me, the pinnacle of both Gershwin's and William Bolcom's artistry is reached on the second of the three preludes - a classic study of a bluesy mood.

Just when you think things can't get any better, Joan Morris arrives. She effortlessly sings and swings her way through ten of Gershwin's best songs from the cheeky comedy of By Strauss to the smoky moodiness of Someone To Watch Over Me. Maybe I'm just an incurable old romantic, but the ballads are the best of all.

Lets us Groove and ROCK.......2007-05-16

This album is so hip, it probably led to the demise of such talented musicians in a group together. Listen to Pat lay down some ballsy, in your face, groove the night away rhythms. Billy and him are like glue. Guitar work and vocals kick it up another few notches. Yea it took two casual listens and then my ears were dancing. It is too bad that the formulas to make music and money is so redundant and boring. Hats off to a band that was willing to step up and step out and play with such virtuosity.

takes a few listens.......2006-12-27

This is actually a fine album, you just have to listen with an open mind. It definitely doesn't sound like Mr. Big of old, but it certainly DOES NOT sound like Creed, as one reviewer wrote! The main difference is the aggresssion and "heaviness" seems to be down a notch or two. There are still songs that rock, but on the whole they have more groove and soul. Kotzens guitar sound is more twangy, and has less distortion than Mr. Gilbert. He obviously has a lot of influence with the sound of this album. At first I didn't like it, but now I listen on a regular basis! Favorites are Hole in the Sun, How Does It Feel, and Static.

Everything in Moderation........2004-11-04

In my opinion, Richie Kotzen does not "suck". He's very talented and brings a lot of nice uppers to the album--he's just not Paul Gilbert. For those of us who believe the top 40, and thought Mr.Big was long gone, "Get Over It" is a delightful surprise. I'm happy to say they haven't changed their style to appease the fickled masses in radioland. (So for those of us who like their sound, here's 11 more tracks!) Unlike some reviewers, I actually did listen to the whole album, and I'm happy to say there's not a trace of Ricky Martin or Creed to be found anywhere on it.
What I do see is a bit of monotony in the pace of the songs. On half of them, the boys keep the music different, but if you listen to Eric Martin's voice one song can sound like another. The lyrics are clever, like their album covers--tongue in cheek. The tracks that don't lull you are great additions to the Mr.Big file. "Hole in the Sun" is probably the highlight, but I like Kotzen's "Static" too. (New personnel always adds a freshness.) The sound may be a bit different, but the style's still the same.
If you want to get hooked, start with Mr.Big's "Bump Ahead" (my fave) or "Lean Into It". If you're a fan though, don't be dissuaded: add this one to your collection.

What a dissapointment........2004-07-20

Compared to other albums like "Hey Man" or the self-titled album, "Get Over It" is a dissapointment. Eric Martin is still a great vocalist, but Mr. Big without Paul Gilbert is like Bon Jovi without Richie Sambora. There's only three good songs on this album:"Electrified", "Superfantastic" and "How Does It Feel". I didn't listen to every song in whole. I listened to the whole things of the first 9 tracks, but that's it. When I got to "Mr. Never In A Million Years", I just couldn't take it. After a few minutes, I just skipped to "My New Religion", and I thought that one was boring too. Other than the songs I mentioned, this album isn't worth the cash. You're better off getting the self-titled album or a used copy of "Hey Man". BTW:"Superfantastic" is also available on the "Greatest Hits" collection which Rhino released in May of 2004. You should just get that, or "Hey Man" or the self-titled one. Get Over It is a dissapointment. I'm still yet to hear "Actual Size", but I ordered that one today and am hoping it will be better.

Change of direction - not better, not worse - just different.......2003-05-22

Okay. I was very disappointed when I first heard this album. Why? Guess because the changeover from Paul Gilbert to Richie Kotzen was one that had a huge impact on Mr Big's overall sound. From Paul's heavy, more metallic style to Richie's Hendrixy sounds and classic / southern rock stylings.

Consequently, it wasn't what I expected and I shelved the album. Till one fine day I really "listened" to it more objectively. And it grew on me. It's really a good album. Very different from Mr Big's previous albums, but definitely not worse.

So if you like seventies style classic rock, you should definitely check this out.

If you absolutely must have Paul Gilbert, check out the new stuff he's doing with Racer X. That's always Paul at his very best.
