Album Description

One would never guess that the members of 400 Blows are fans of the Smiths when listening to their debut album, Black Rainbow. This California punk trio delivers a high-speed, aggro-accented set, and it's the farthest thing away from anything Morrissey and company ever did. Early Black Sabbath might come to mind first, but not the Smiths. Quick, pinch-hitting percussion from Ferdinand Cudia is fully as intense as Christian Wabschall's hypnotic guitar riffs, but it's the frenetic vocal screeching from frontman Skot Alexander that totally defines what 400 Blows stands for. There's more speed, more angst, and a raw post-grunge rage on Black Rainbow and for a young band, it's an explosive effort. They're not aiming to do what's already been done since Nirvana first arrived in the early '90s, because they obviously lack the desire to do so. It's pretty clear that 400 Blows isn't following any kind of post-alternative rock formula on Black Rainbow. The only thing they! 're wanting to do is rock out — and hard. With songs like "The Ugly Are So Beautiful," "The Root of Our Nature," and "Everyone Is Silent," 400 Blows feels the fever and wants the listener to respond without thinking. 400 Blows is sick — sick with what's commercially appealing and ill to what's currently thought of as punk. Black Rainbow is the real thing, so be afraid. AMG

I saw these guys live at the Knitting Factory in NYC with Dead Meadow and The Icarus Line. Out the three bands that night, these guys stuck out the most. Their sound was perfect. The vocals, guitar, and drums were balanced, so there wasn't too much of anything. And they were loud. Very loud. Skot was doing his weird psychedelic metal dance, while Xian was headbanging, and Ferdinand was wildly slamming the drums. My friend was like, "Their drummer is craaaaazy!"

After the show, I bought their cd and do not regret it at all. It's not like their live show, but it slays nonetheless. Go see these guys live! They will blow you away. No pun intended.

i bought this cd way back, maybe two years ago. mine has a diffrent cover photo, of like swigly lights. Any way, i have allwaysed liked punk, mostly LA hard core punk from the 80`s. although this cd dosent sound anything like that ganra of mucsic the essence is still the same, it has a lot of energy you can todally vibe off of, and its diffrent from anything else i have herd in a long time, a releaf considering i have been listending to music made so many years ago. the music has a harsh metal riff, harsh vocals-comparable to darby crash, and the drums are fast: good stuff. and yes im dislexic!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is the root of our nature!!!.......2004-12-14

...So begins the 1st track of 400 Blows' album "Black Rainbow."
This 3-piece band reigning from L.A. (Skot-vocals, Christian-guitar, and Ferdinand-drums)produces some of the finest music out there...Even if it isn't exactly mainstream.

The CD kicks of with an awesome song called "Root of our Nature." Skot's abraisive, loud, vocals are perfectly matched by Christian's heavily distorted guitar, and Ferdinand's tight drum rhythms. The whole album is great, except for the instrumental song named after the album that appears in the middle. Standout tracks include "Root of our nature," "The Ugly are so Beautiful," "Thinking of You," and "The Bull that Killed the Matador."

Even though I would call their music "metal," 400 Blows aren't conventional metal. There is no bass, and none of the songs on the CD have anything resembling a melody. However, they definately know how to kick out the jams! This is the kind of music that will tear the skin off your face, and crumble the foundations of pyramids. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD now! Rock on!

This is a great album by a good-looking band. It's great to hear these guys back on track after Christian's bout with the big H, Ferdie's strange decision to host the new "Soul Train", and Skot's badly botched pectoral implant surgery. Sensitive songs about smoking crack and touching animals. The bass lines are some of the most intricate compositions imaginable, and Skot's harmonica work on "March of the Turds" brings a tear to the eye.
Try not to overanalyze the subtle leatherdaddy undertones of the cover graphic, and simply allow yourself to be swept away by the white noise onslaught of Black Rainbow like a swollen river of mucous. Bravo!

    Album Description

This CD presents a tribute to Thea Musgrave on the occasion of her 75th birthday. While a scholarship student of Nadia Boulanger, Scottish-born Musgrave was the winner of the Lili Boulanger Memorial Prize, and has since gone on to win numerous awards and honors. Her works have been widely performed in Britain, Europe and the USA. Musgrave is active as a conductor of her own music, and has worked with most of the major British and American orchestras. The New York Virtuoso Singers, arguably America's finest `new music' chorus, are heard in this loving tribute to Musgrave. The CD opens with a major Musgrave work-the 26 minute long "For the Time Being: Advent", based on W.H. Auden's poem "For the Time Being" (pub. 1945), a work of self-questioning in time of war and at a time of loss. This work is a tour de force, not only for its huge variety of vocal textures, but also for the manner in which Musgrave sustains, over its entire length, the sombre intensity of Auden's vision. British film star Michael York is the narrator on this recording. "Black Tambourine", on six poems of Hart Crane, is performed as a continuous 18 minute span. The cycle captures the wide range of moods of the poetry, from the madrigal-like trio of `Pastoral' to the tinkling salon piano of "My Grandmother's Love Letters". The CD also includes three delightful cycles taken from the anthology "Poems on the Underground"-a series of madrigal-like works setting poems that were exhibited in the trains of the London Underground.

    Album Description

2001 release for UK grindcore legends. Featuring former members of Cradle Of Filth and Raw Noise. Described as 'skull-crushing' it promises to be their fastest and most savagely brutal album to date.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Being And Nothing.......2005-01-24

This new album for the crust/grind pioneers is their most brutal album yet. I dont see how people can say they gave up their punk roots when this album sounds more like their early stuff more then their damage 381 album. Sure theres not any political lyrics but singing about that stuff for so long gets old. This is a must for any true E.N.T. fan.

4 out of 5 stars Being And Nothing - Extreme Noise Terror's departure.......2003-02-27

Let's analyze the album title: Extreme Noise Terror "being" one of the pioneers of UK Crustpunk/Grindcore in the mid 80's and "nothing" as in nothing could have prepared ENT's old fans and certain new comers. Ok...so it isn't "Holocaust In Your Head" or even "Retro-bution", but it still has it's own character. "Being And Nothing" is like having a chainsaw ripping through your face with the throttle on full blast! Nothing but pure whirlwind Grindcore holocaust! Gone are the killer Crustpunk social-political lyrics, only being replaced by dark metaphors. I think after so long you can only sing about changing the world and whatnot that you just want to play-out full-blown aggresion and may be throw in some personal subjects. And if anyone really knows....the 90's were certainly NOT kind to the British brummies in ENT. May be ENT are trying to catch-up with the times, may be ENT just want to mature a little bit. Either or, "Being And Nothing" is a very good album.

    5 out of 5 stars ...Awesome.......2002-12-17

I picked up this CD on a whim in a used CD store. I'd never heard of them before, and I noticed this album was on Candlelight records, known for it's phenomenal metal bands (i.e. Emperor and Opeth, just to name a few). So I [bought it] and gave it a try. My reaction? HOLY [COW!] I've been a heavy metal fan for roughly a decade now, listening to anything from Pantera to Myrkskog to White Zombie to Origin. And WOW. After inquiring about this band, I discovered that they had originally been a punk band, and that there's only one original member for this album. Well, I guess this kind of drastic change from politically oriented punk to extreme grind metal is disappointing to those who are fans of the punk phenomenon (just look at the other couple reviews), but coming from the perspective of a metal fanatic, I have to say that these guys honestly ROCK insofar as their capabilities for this kind of sound. I like this disc so much it managed to bump Cryptopsy's "None So Vile" album out of rotation for a good while.

"Being & Nothing" is a superb grind album, and I very highly recommend it to any fan of extreme metal. Another bonus is that this time around they also incorporate Gian from Cradle of Filth on guitar duties, but really that's just an insignificant fact when looking at the talent of the band overall. Tracks 4,6,7 & 8 are particularly strong.

I know that a number of you punk fans are probably extremely disappointed with this release by ENT, but as a metalhead I couldn't be happier with it. Check this out if you enjoy brutal, lightning fast metal!

3 out of 5 stars Definitely not "Holocaust In Your Head"...........2001-12-07

This is basically a competent, tight, enjoyable death metal record from a band comprised of one (?) original member, having nothing in common with classic ENT whatsoever. Similar to the gradual change Napalm Death made from 'Scum' to 'Harmony..' to 'Fear..', etc. Overall, this is a solid record and definitely worthwhile for any fan of death metal, the lyrical concept is provocative, the more refined artwork/overall aesthetic carried over a bit from the ill-fated "Damage 381" release (the band's final with Earache). If you're looking for solid crust/grind, there are PLENTY of bands to choose from (check out releases on 625 Records, Havoc Records, or pick up an MRR) and obviously ENT haven't been interested in DIY grindcore for a long, long while. But judging it solely on it's own merits outside of the ENT legacy, it's good stuff. Solid musicianship, technical prowess, growling vox, etc. The bottom line being whether or not you're willing to accept such a drastic change from ENT.

    1 out of 5 stars dissapointment.......2001-09-12

extreme noise terror have once and for all said goodbye to their punk rock roots....no more political lyrics just crappy death metal....if you like any old e.n.t. (pre-earache)than you will not like this, with only one original member in the band this release is terrible

5 out of 5 stars Underrated and underappreciated .......2006-03-12

First of all, The Funeral of Being is an underrated album. The Funeral of Being had a lot to live up to after the fantastic Nocturnal Poisoning, which is still hailed to this day as Malefic's best work. And although I personally believe that this record holds up in comparison to past releases, some people were unsatisfied with this effort and considered it to be a weak follow up. For the most part, Malefic took Xasthur's sound into a completely different direction, so people expecting more of the same will of course be disappointed. On this release Malefic toned down the usage of synths and distorted the guitars even more - creating a more uncanny, dreamlike atmosphere that does not depend on the excessive usage of synthesizers. Other than that, the drums still trudge along buried low in the mix and dreamy arpeggios are still played on top of layers and layers of fuzz and distortion. That is pretty much Xasthur's trademark sound, but it is done differently on The Funeral of Being. While everything in Nocturnal Poisoning seemed far away and distant, The Funeral of Being is more confrontational and in your face.

Overall, I think that this is one of Malefic's most consistent and refined sounding records. It doesn't sound like Nocturnal Poisoning, but it does sound like a perfected version of A Gate Through the Bloodstained Mirrors. The common denominator that links all of Malefic's work together is the guitar work. Once again, Malefic indulges in layering guitars in order to create a wall of sound. It becomes apparent that this is the key element to Xasthur's sound. In the end, Xasthur shows that true black metal is still striving. Of course, the scene is in a weakened state, but bands like Xasthur show that black metal has the ability to evolve.

    Album Description

Featuring the magical touch of ten-time Grammy winning producer/engineer Al Schmitt (Diana Krall, Frank Sinatra) 'Night Time' is the much-anticipated debut of one of the hottest new cool crooners on the scene, Mark Bransfield. An incomparable collection of both classic and new original love songs, this is vocal pop/jazz at its finest, inviting well-deserved comparisons to many of the giants of the field-- Connick, Bennett, and Torme' for starters. Bransfield's achingly beautiful voice expresses all of the longing and heartbreak that only magnificent songs like these can convey. Under the auspices of recording legend Al Schmitt, the engineer of over 150 Gold and Platinum-selling albums, 'Night Time' is the first truly great album of 2005. Take heed, alienated listeners in the Age of Britney, this is music with integrity. This is music for adults.

Let me first say that usally this genre of music is not my cup of tea. However, Mark sends shivers down my spine. Its been a year since its release and I can say this album has not grown old. The track Baby I Fly Alone is truly a stand out, being one of the songs Bransfield wrote. I had the privilege of meeting Mark at my high school and let me tell you he is a great guy. Support him by buying his album.

    5 out of 5 stars Timeless Passion.......2005-02-22

Mark's voice and presence on this cd remind me that dreams actually do come true--his work is angelic, serene, constant, deep, romantic and promising--in all sorts of ways. I am grateful to hear a man with such fortitude and grace approaching this genre--his presence is much needed!

    5 out of 5 stars Such a SWEET voice!!!.......2005-02-22

The only thing better than listening to Mark Bransfield's warm, sweet voice on this collection of old jazz standards is hearing him sing his own tunes. Definitely buy this album and pay close attention to tracks 4 and 11 ("Opposites Attract" and "Baby I Fly Alone") , plus a beautiful tune on track 13 ("Moments"), written by brother Michael.

Looking forward to hearing more from this new artist!
