Scarface's fourth solo effort, 1997's "The Untouchable," is definitely a solid album, but parts of it can be frustrating. Coming off the brilliance of 1994's The Diary which in my opinion is the best single project of his entire career, he found high expectations and high budget. In sharp contrast to The Diary, which despite its popularity had a pretty raw and underground feel, "The Untouchable" feels like more of a high profile album, with Daz Dillinger, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Too Short, Johnny P, and the late 2Pac making appearances. As the guest list might suggest, there's a pretty heavy west coast influence on the album, with more slowed-down, bass and synth heavy g-funk type of beats rather than the rough southern-fried funk of his earlier solo work. N.O. Joe and Mike Dean, the producing geniuses behind most of the Rap-A-Lot masterpieces, remain behind the boards, but the sound has advanced. The overall feel of the album is much darker than his previous, there are no tracks about women and none dealing with social relevance either. He uses an angrier sounding delivery than before. The album has some really great songs on it, which as single songs stand among the best work of 'Face's career. Tracks like "Smile," "Mary Jane," "Smarts," and a few others stand with the best songs he's done. These are incredible songs which show the passion, lyricism, and talent that Scarface pours into his music. A few tracks bring the album down, with monotonous and redundant beats, boring cliched subject matter, and bloated running length, but the majority of the songs here are good efforts. It's certainly not his best album, but 'Face is one of the best rappers of all time and I certainly recommend this album to hip hop fans.

After the intro (unnecessary if you ask me because the vast majority of it's silent), the album starts with the title track, a pretty good funky track where the MC lets loose. "No Warning" is a hardcore, threatening track with a nice hook ("but ninety-nine point nine of the time, you go'n die..."). "Southside" has a decent beat and lyrics painting a picture of his hood, it's a pretty average cut for the album. "Sunshine" is not a track I really like on this disc, it's okay lyrically but the beat and weak hook don't appeal to me. "Money Makes the World Go Round" has a slow, basic beat from Daz Dillinger, but it is the weakest track on the album. It's unsettling to hear Scarface rap in such a cliched manner with such average subject material. At this point, the album definitely picks up and finishes much stronger than it starts. "For Real" is a better song, with some rough production. "Ya Money or Ya Life" is decent but too long. The best four songs come consecutively. "Mary Jane" is an excellently produced song that many may recognize as Ashanti's "Baby," because she (sleazily) took the delivery and music from this song. Musically and lyrically this song is great, Scarface speaks of weed's medicinal powers during times of struggle. "Smile" is probably the most well-known song of his career, featuring one of 2Pac's last guest appearances for a classic collaboration. The beat again is phenomenal as is each verse and the chorus from Johnny P. "Smartz" is excellent, some top-notch Scarface material, and the chilling "Faith" is as well. "Game Over" is a nice posse cut featuring the previously mentioned west coast heavyweights. After the outro is a very good and well-produced bonus track featuring his proteges from the group Facemob.

Anyone who's ever heard 'Face knows that listening to his albums is an often incredible experience, and for the most part "The Untouchable" is no exception. That said, it's far from his best work, and listeners who have yet to hear The Diary, Mr. Scarface Is Back, or his albums with Geto Boys like We Can't Be Stopped should certainly buy those before "The Untouchable." "The Untouchable" is a hard album showing Scarface at the height of his popularity, and it's one I recommend to fans of his other music.

If for some reason you've never checked him out this is the best place to start (solo-wise). While everything that the Geto Boys did was amazing this was when I realized how impressive his music was and still is. All the guest artists held it down and didn't get outshined by Scarface yet instead only added to the extremely dope effort of the music. All in All, go cop this and enjoy some of the best, that rap music has to offer.

I HAVE SERIOUSLY COMTEMPLATED HOW GOOD THIS ALBUM IS, BASED ON THE FACT, THAT I CAN'T, AFTER ALMOST 10 YEARS, THINK OF WHAT COMES CLOSE TO THE CALIBER OF THIS GETO BOY DYNAMIC C.D. "UNTOUCHABLE"! I HAVE HEARD ALBUM AFTER ALBUM, AND THERE ARE SOME AMAZING ALBUMS FROM THAT YEAR, BUT NONE ARE AS HARD, THOUGHT OUT, OR MORE PAINFULLY DEVIOUS, AS THIS ALBUM.

GRANTED THIS ALBUM HAS 12 TRACKS, AND IS RELATIVELY SHORT IN COMPARISON TO OTHERS THAT YEAR(ANYTHING MASTER P, LASTS 3 DAYS AN ALBUM, YET SUCK.)! UNTOUCHABLE DOESN'T LACK IN INTENSITY, HUMOR, HUMILITY, AND HONOR, AS SCARFACE (BRADLEY JORDAN b.1970), SHOWS WHAT THE STREETS HAVE NOT ONLY BROUGHT HIMSELF, BUT MANY OF HIS FELLOW TEXANS IN THEIR CITY'S DIRTY STREETS.

the album has not one boring beat, Gameover is a crazy beat, listen 2 the lyrics, crazy, AND IS SAMPLED from the greatest fighter of all time, at least when i was growing up in the 90's, BRUCE LEE. Mary jane is classic and Smile, but all the other songs are good, not bad juss cuz your use Face prior shouldnt mean u cant hear Face work something diff, this is the first album i got from ScareFace, and i liked it, after this he didnt F*Ck wit the west as much witch sucks cuz i like hearing him blazin wit his homies out in Cali, but i do like hearing him more when he holds it down 4 H-Town, cuz first and for the most i like him makeing tracks wit dude, K, G.B. and all. then Cali, then comes the tracks wit eastcoast like the 1 wit jay & Beans dope, i cant say much on this album that people havent all ready said, but i can add a sujestion, If The songs sounds boring at first LET IT GROW on u, and believe u and me it Will GROW ON U, just Turn it up put some BASS and u will HEAR SCARFACE doing St8 Classic.

I dont really know why alot of people down talked this album. I guess coming back from an album like "diary" people expected another "diary". One thing I LOVE ABOUT FACE is he never re-does anything he does no matter how succesful it was. He always moves one & thats exactly what he did with this album & I LOVED IT. The whole feel of the album was more laid back than what he had done before. Tracks like "smile" with the legendary 2pac(rip) was HUGE! "mary jane" wich was later slaughterd by ashanti into a love song is also CLASSIC! to me the most overlooked song on this album was "smartz" with Devin the dude,the track had that perfect RAP-A-LOT laid back southern gangsta feel to it. Anything less than classic for this album is a shame.

Mac Mall's 1996 album "Untouchable" is an album that really grew on me. I remember first buying it and expecting a standard Young Black Brotha Records album like Ray Luv's "Forever Hustlin'," Dubee's "Dubee aka Sugawolf," or Young Lay's "Black 'n Dangerous," and this album is pretty different from those other YBB releases of 1995 and 1996. When I first had it, I wasn't very impressed with it at all, but the more I listened the more I really began to get into the deep grooves and Mac Mall's hypnotic flow. The list of producers includes YBB's in-house man Khayree, as well as Mike Mosley and Ant Banks, the Bay Area's three best producers. It doesn't sound like a traditional YBB release because Khayree doesn't produce the whole thing. It's kind of odd, though, because the beats throughout this album are quite similar, at times to the point of monotony. Some of the songs will even kind of run together in your mind. But after a few listens, for me at least, the bass heavy, synth woozy production really begins to make your head nod, and I guess for me it was kind of an acquired case. Mac Mall is a cool MC, he has a really great flow with a kind of high pitched voice that spits Bay Area slang effortlessly. He doesn't sound quite as ridiculous as E-40 but their deliveries are sometimes similar. Mac tells the traditional Bay Area tales of "triple-beams and ice cream," but he also does a little philosophizing at times. His subject matter may get a little tiresome as there is a whole lot of it on "Untouchable." The tracks are pretty well-polished, and they all have nice hooks. This is really simple gangsta rap, so some fans looking for a lot of lyrical substance might want to look elsewhere, but Mac has style and charisma. "Untouchable" is a cool album from a good MC that showcases the unique Bay Area style.

After a cool 1-minute instrumental intro, the album begins with "Let's Get a Telly," which has a hard-hitting standard Bay Area beat and Mac Mall doing his thing. It's a solid song but not exactly a standout. "Straight Lace" is more catchy and upbeat. "Servin' Game" is a decent song speaking of the crime life involved in such activity. "Young N..." is funky and has nice bass. "Dopefiend's Lullaby" is woozy and appealing musically, and Mac Mall adjusts his delivery to it nicely, a very nice track. Lyrically "Ghetto Stardom" is the album's standout, because Mac steps back from his crime tales and talks about the other side of it. He wonders why so many people must engage in such a risky lifestyle, and the chorus is emphasizes it ("They tried to tell us in the verses and the scriptures, but I guess the real message musta missed us..."). The production is also very nice on this track, it's a real highlight. I also love the song "Get Right," which has an inescapable chorus and Mac's hardest verses. This song induces head-nodding from start to finish. The upbeat "Playas With da Choppas" follows, with the similar "Get Away" next. "Pimp or Die" is a nice track featuring Ray Luv (for the record, Ray Luv's verse was just taken from his song "In the Game" and laid over a new beat). The beat is very nice here and it's a feel-good track. The title track is strong but sounds very similar to a lot of the other tracks. He gets autobiographical on "Opening Doors" which has a soulful chorus, which precedes the average "Playa Tip." "Crestside" represents his home, the last song before the outro, which sounds just like the intro.

"Untouchable" is pretty basic gangsta rap, but it's well done and I think it's something that many listeners will find appealing. It's consistent enough that you can pretty much listen to it straight through, and this might be a good starting point for people unfamiliar with the Bay Area genre. I recommend it to fans of E-40 or Celly Cel, and also to fans of YBB, even though it's definitely more similar to the former. It's almost worth it just for "Get Right," "Ghetto Stardom" and the other handful of standouts, but it's definitely a nice disc to add to the collection.

Mac Mall came real hard in 1996 with "Untouchable." With str8 sav mob style beats from Khayree, Mike Mosley, Ant Banks and one by Cold 187 um ("Opening Doors"), u know u gonna be noddin ya head for an hour. And then there's Mac Mall himself. He has one of the best flows of any West Coast MC. He's menacing, but treal throughout. Check out his wordplay on the title track. I love the Ant Banks space boogie beat on "Playa Tip." Mall shows you the real deal of strugglin and strivin for thrivin on "Ghetto Stardom" and "Opening Doors" (with Kokane's funky hook vocals). Mac Mall serves str8 lace game through tthe album. U can't fade this Crestside Mac.

An excellent come back from mall. He came with some real deep lyrics on this one, the tracks are tight too. He talks about a lot of problems and deals with issues from his heart on this. He came back and on this album and showed he was a serious rapper who had something to say. He has a good flow too advancing from the last album. These were the days when mall was ripping s#it properly. I don't feel his later stuff. I recommend this to anyone who wants a good, serious album from the bay. This is another tight one for the collection. Peace!

This is a mixed bag. Some tracks are better than others, but mediocre Danny was still better than any other guitarist on the planet. My fave is "One for the Road", AKA "It's a Quarter to Three". Danny pulls out all of the stops on this one: B3 licks, bebop jazz, blistering soul, incredible guitar pyrotechnics--it just leaves you breathless at the end. "Sweet Georgia Brown", despite poor audio quality, played in three different tempos, each subsequent faster than the previous, also stands out. "Deep Purple" with Buddy Emmons is abolutely perfect. "One for Lenny [Breau]" is a tribute from one guitar genius to another (sadly deceased). Anyway, this is a great album. Do yourself a favor and buy it --- NOW!

Danny Gatton is to the guitar what Buddy Rich is to the drums - there will never be another like him. I thank NRG for keeping him alive with releases of discovered material. This CD showcases a lot of flawless intricate work that is highly enjoyable. You spend a lot of time thinking "how did he do that?". An essential disc!

this is a truly shining collection of the best american-style guitar playing. Any good music enthusiast will find as many influences as he can think of in Danny's playing. Guitar tone, phrasing, touch and inventive are gorgeous throughout. Any guitar player will be busy stealing licks for months!

CHECK OUT HIS INTERPRETATION OF "SWEET GEORGIA BROWN" WHICH ALONE IS WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION. HE ALSO PUTS ON A CLINIC ON CREATING A B-3 SOUND WITH THE GUITAR. THIS IS NOT A CD FULL OF OUT TAKES THAT GATTON WOULD NOT BE PROUD TO RELEASE. This super CD should wet your appetite for the richness of the so called asian underground music. The only caveat about CD, is you may want just go ahead and buy the cds of the artists, so you won't have extra versions of the tracks once you are hooked on their music. The mixture of eastern and mostly western rhythm is truly refreshing and uplifting. Who had it first? These guys or the theivery corporation?

the breaks and rhythms in many tracks are *quite* repetetive, sterile, and boring - lightweight and not mental or cut-up enough (for me), although the other sampling, sounds and intruments are perfect. This maybe a bit wishy washy for hardcore Jungle & dNb heads but the Indian influence is well dealt with and the CD really is a must for anyone interested in the cross over.

How good can a various artist Cd get? Is there a limit to a single CD's greatness? Can a Cd be so good that you cannot stop listning to it? Yes there is. This one. This CD is very unusual totally racy and expermental and is a true winner. Excillent tracks by some of the best artists to come out form the Asian Unnderground Movement. It also has some classics from the 60's and 70's flower prower era. Besides jungel standerds by the likes of Nitin Swahny, Shri and Barmarsh there are some excillent break beat hooks by Up, Bustel and Out and Pressur drop. In fact "the theam from outcaste" is probably the best electronic track i have ever heard period. Also T.J. Rehmi and Niraj Chag lend there fantastic expertiese to this already beautiful collection of stars and ofcourse there is the timeless classic Mathar....only song i have ever heard where electric guitar and a sitar actually work. I never review a Cd unless i am gonna give it 5 stars and trust me, I would give this one 20 if i could . Excillent cd.

This CD, while not nearly as well known, ranks up there with Sounds of the Asian Underground. I woudn't say that about many other indie mixes, except maybe Tabla Beat Science, and some of Badmarsh & Shri's best stuff.

Here's my breakdown:
1) The cover art is cool.
2) The title for the CD is pretty damn bold. I wondered if the music could hold up to a title like that. Happily, it does.
3) About the music: This CD moves in and out of traditional and modern techniques. We are presented with some of the ancient power instruments such as tablas and sitars, mixed with warm deep base, and electronic beats. The producers took care to let us enjoy each aspect fully. The past and the present are combined into something greater than the sum of its parts. In this way, we get a primordial sound that at once doesn't feel dated.

A must have addition to any indie collection.

This is the best mixtape of 2004, as stated in the title, Crooked, finally free from the disease called Death Row, created this whole mixtape in 3 days, and all freestyles are top-class, he drops flames on the mic and also sings his part fabolously.

This is a Must-Have for real westcoast rap heads
