Edutainment [Clean] [Explicit Lyrics]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Arguably the last "good" BDP album before KRS-One took a slight misstep with Sex and Violence (and then had to reinvent himself on Return of the Boom Bap), Edutainment was a classic blend of puffed-chest bravado mixed with socially conscious missives. This multifaceted scope is best reflected in the album's three best-known songs: "Love's Gonna Getcha," an antimaterialist, anticrime narrative; "Ya Know the Rules," a furious rhyme pelting; and "Beef," where KRS lays into the meat industry. Keeping the beats strictly b-boy are producers KRS, Kenny Parker, and others. Even if you're not a BDP completist, this album deserves to be in your collection. --Oliver Wang

Class Is Now In Session {5 Stars}.......2007-01-23
With this 1990 release, Boogie Down Productions was steamrolling their way to legendary status. This was back when BDP dropped fresh material every year from '87 (Criminal Minded) until '92 (Sex & Violence), so that's not necessarily as easy as it may sound. With classic tracks like "Love's Gonna Get 'Cha", "Ya Strugglin' ", "House Ni***s", "100 Guns" (Ja Rule bit this joint), "Beef", and "Blackman In Effect", you know that the album is, at the very least, doper than most other 1990 hip hop releases. But there are solid tracks laced throughout the album and there are no fillers. Personally, I can't imagine why anyone would give this album less than 5 stars, but that's just me. This album is just as fresh now as it was 17 (oh my god, 17 years?!!!) years ago.
As far as flaws, I can't think of any. Sure, KRS gets political, so obviously it's going to rub some people the wrong way (like most political stances do), but I loved it and saw nothing wrong with it. The beats are strictly b-boy styled boom bap vibes and nothing less. If you ain't feelin' that, then you may be browsing the wrong genre for your music.
Edutainment is just that -- educational entertainment. There isn't a beat that KRS One can't get busy on and he entertains the masses with knowledge instead of dreams of material prosperity. Hip hop heads all around the world (myself included) recognize him as one of the illest to ever stand in front of a microphone. The production is on point, so what more could you ask for? I recommend grabbing this album if you cross paths with it.
Standout Tracks: The Homeless, Ya Strugglin' feat. Kwame Toure, Beef (My Favorite), Ya Know The Rules, Love's Gonna Get 'Cha (Material Love), House Ni***s, Blackman In Effect, Original Lyrics feat. Special K, and 100 Guns
BDP.......2007-01-19
Classic CD from back in the day. If you want to hear real hip hop from the Bronx, listen to this.
Great album!.......2006-07-09
This album is great but totally different.
This and Blueprint of Hiphop are so unique from BDP's other albums.
While I like the old albums better, this new style still earns 5 stars.
Too bad they're in the past.
I can't believe it's been almost 20 years since this one came out, seems like yesterday.
"We Shall Call It the Library, Where We Bury the Lies.".......2006-01-10
This is one of the sickest, and most appropriately titled, albums ever in any genre. KRS-One lays down his manifesto immediately on "Blackman in Effect" and doesn't let up one ounce on gems such as "Beef" "Edutainment" House Niggas" "Ya Know the Rules" etc etc etc. In Fact, the only tracks I don't like on this record are "Love's Gonna Getcha" and "30 Cops or More". Every other track on this is slammin' in my humble opinion. Way back in the day I would play this constantly along with "By Any Means" and "Ghetto Music"
Classic .......2005-08-02
This is a very insightful rap album. BDP's longest album is also their most expermental. KRS-One takes on such topics such as racism, the homeless, gun violence, and even the meat industry. Favorites include Beef, Ya Know the Rules, Love's Gonna Get'cha, Ya Strugglin', and The Kenny Parker Show. This is a true hip hop classic which I could say about all BDP's albums.

Yet Another Classic Among Classics.......2007-07-30
By All Means Necessary gave us a taste of what was to come on this..it's like he lead us with baby steps to this. This album is a beast. It starts with a nice introduction by Kwame Ture (aka Stokely Carmichael), spoken in his characteristic soft and eloquent style and that leads right into the first track which starts out "WAKE UP! TAKE THE PILLOW FROM YOUR HEAD, AND PUT A BOOK IN IT!" That in itself should prove that this would be a different kind of album. This album pushed you to think, at the same time KRS was experimenting greatly with various lyrics flows at this time. The result is an absolute masterpiece o from a hip hop standpoint. I don't think this one got much radio play..but it wasn't created for that purpose.
If I could..I'd buy everybody a copy of this. Seriously. We need to hear more music like this these days.
A breath of fresh air-good anti-racist CD.......2007-03-04
This came out in the midst of a lot of negativity in hip hop which has since overtaken the genre. KRS-One did a good job here in denouncing racism both inside and outside of the black community, dealing with issues of identity (the homeless and ya strugglin-note the subtle swipe at Michael Jackson in the latter) and an all-star jam with the BDP crew (D-nice, Miss Melody, Sister Harmony, etc). Some excerpts from Stokely Carmichael (yes, THAT Stoke-shortly before his death) are quite enlightening.
Sadly, Kris Parker's hold on the youth did not last much longer as gangster (c)rap went on to destroy the music, but that's another story. Get this and see how rap COULD have been.

A BDP Classic........2002-01-29
With stripped down production, brilliant lyrics and the fiercest delivery of his career, KRS-One and company deliver the best LP in thier entire musical cannon. While many disliked and/or misunderstood this album when it first appeared, the last decade and a half have opened minds and ears to it's sheer daring and revolutionary impact. The music, as always is sliced down to the barest essentials, a simple 808 drum machine here, some reggae flavoring there (the hypnotic "Breath Control II") African Drums ("The Homeless") and even wah-wah guitar over funky drums ("Original Lyrics", my personal fave) and the production isn't too crowded allowing Parker's biting, incisive lyrics and terrific vocals plenty of breathing room and the attention they deserve. While things do get a bit preachy, the sheer enjoyment of these performances will leaven out the heavy-handed tone of the words. A rap LP was never more aptly titled. School is in session.
A Classroom Course Has Never Been So Cheap.......2001-02-02
How much is this CD? $15.00? How many college courses can you take for that? None. Edutainment, (Education Through Entertainment) is not only dope hip hop, but is educational. Breaking down the walls of ignorance that the goverment wants us to stay behind, KRS-1 comes with some truly mentally uplifting material on this one. His strong beats and fluidic firey lyrics, make this a true hip hop classic. From the Ruff and hard hitting Hous Ni**a's and You Know The Rules to the smoothness of Love's Gonna Getcha. Edutaiment is 90 minutes of beats, rhymes, and street education. When I say street, I am not referring to gangstr BS, im talking about the street being the one place where what you here is real, and its where to get the real story. Edutainment is a true hip hop classic, great reference material for the newby's who want to be "down". This will test you. HAA! Mark D gives this CD a 5 on the hype scale.
