Despite the phenomenal box-office bounty of Titanic, director James Cameron didn't become King of the World overnight. Indeed, King James helped build his crowd-pleasing reputation on the belated 1986 sequel to Ridley Scott's outer space shockfest, Alien. That sequel, Aliens, was also his first collaboration with film scorer James Horner, whose music contributed in no small way to Titanic's über-success. This expanded edition of Horner's mysterious Aliens score features a sparkling digital transfer and over a half-hour of previously unreleased cues and outtakes. While Horner obviously trades on Jerry Goldsmith's original masterpiece and even Khatchaturian's Gayane Ballet Suite (used so effectively by Kubrick to evoke the loneliness of space in 2001), it's a pastiche that's informed by a masterful use of brooding orchestral colors and percussion flourishes that are by turns ominous and subtle. That element of the composer's evocative formula is further explored in two percussion-only bonus cuts, "Ripley's Rescue" and "Combat Drop." This edition also includes a colorful illustrated booklet with a detailed essay about the film's musical genesis. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding, arguably Horner's best soundtrack.......2006-11-09
In contrary to many reviewers, it is my opinion that Horner really did an admirable job on Aliens. This is a fantastic soundtrack, largely also due to LSO's outstanding performance. There are very few weak moments on this soundtrack, and I - being a percussionist - also like the "percussion only" tracks, which apparently seem to annoy everyone but me. :) Otherwise, lots of great writing and instrumentation, especially in those more atmospheric cues (which also seem to annoy some people, but I think Horner had a good reason for composing that material the way he did).
The film itself (which is for me one of the all-time greatest examples of its genre) would probably lose a lot of its efficiency and impact, were it not for Horner's musical contribution. Yes, he did to some extent reuse some of his earlier scores and yes, he did use some other music too, but in this case, it somehow just makes perfect sense. After Aliens, Horner certainly wrote (and is still able to write) a lot of good music, but I think he'll never be able to write something quite as unspeakably special as Aliens.
Last, but not least, this Varese Sarabande's Deluxe Edition really delivers big time, the score sounds fantastic and its many previously unreleased tracks are a treasure which make every true soundtrack junkie's day. :) Yet another big plus is the accompanying booklet, which could serve as an example of how these things should be done (thank God we still have people like Mike Matessino ...). Warmly recommended!
Aliens "Unedited".......2006-05-24
I say "unedited" because this is the score as it was recorded in the studio, not how it was heard in the movie. As the 2 disc edition of Aliens explains, there were difficulties with scoring this film as "both director and composer didn't know how to deal with composers and directors". However, both composer and director have proven to have learned this necessary skill as was seen (and heard) in Cameron/Horner's Titanic.
This is actually quite an accomplishment for having been composed in a matter of weeks (two or three if I remember correctly). The score has some nice quiet, atmospheric cues, as well as some very hard, action cues. The booklet that comes with the CD is a detailed account of the score in relation to the film and how the score was re-edited almost completely to fit with the director's vision of the film. I personally couldn't really tell that this was different from the film, but I haven't methodically compared the two. Very good score for Horner's second ever. Great CD to compliment the music of an incredible film.
A Very Great Re-Issue!.......2004-09-22
I must say that this album is the greatest re-issue up to date. On the previous version(which I also have), looks miniscule when compared to this. Now, this album features tracks and alternate cues previously not available. Outstanding tracks are: Ripley's Rescue(Track 11), Futile Escape(Track 13), Bishop's Countdown(Track 17) and the newly available Queen To Bishop(Track 18). And not to mention that this album has been given the 20-Bit remastering process, restoring back it's true sound quality, with no hints of detail loss. All "Aliens" fans out there, this is one marvellous album not to be missed.
Horner scores a bullseye with this one!.......2004-07-24
James Horner did a great job with this score. People say it sounds like Horner used clips from some of his other scores like Star Treks II and III. Surely that's not a reason to not like this album, I don't think so. Horner mixes the sounds of thrilling, horror and action in this score which was nominated for a 1986 Academy Award. So it sounds like Star Trek II and III, So What! Get this album and enjoy it.
Not That Great.......2003-07-12
I really don't think that this CD is worthy of an upgrade if you have the original release already. Okay, so you can argue that it's 'digitally remastered'. But so what? All the best music was on the first release. The new 'un contains a lot of deleted material, extensive liner notes and bonus 'percussion only' tracks. But it's still not good enough.
Much of this CD is empty 'lurking around' music that excites in no way. The 'Alien Trilogy' release by Cliff Eidelman had the good sense to cut out of this and get straight to the action. The best example of this is 'Futile Escape'. We have to wait thru 3 minutes of NOTHING before the action kicks in. It's great stuff but skipping thru the beginning of the track is an awful chore.
If you know much about James Horner you know that he rips himself off way too much. Commando was a rip-off of his own 48 Hours and Aliens sounds way too much like his score for Star Trek III. Hard to believe this was nominated for 'Best ORIGINAL Score'. Though it is still the best score of the whole Alien Quadrilogy (I guess that's the word for it now). It's better than what Goldsmith offered in the first and superior to anything Goldenthal and Frizzell created for 3 and 4.
But if you have the first release then just stick with it. You may think you're getting more but it has just been bloated up with boring stuff. Plus, what's the deal with these 'percussion only' tracks? How on earth are these supposed to be entertaining? A 'Brass Only' track would have made sense but percussion only? The tracks selected for this treatment were boring before being stripped of all the other instruments.
I do wish Varese Sarabande would do a Deluxe Edition of something more worthy, like the scores to Predator 1 and 2 or the aforementioned Commando (which is available as a Varese Sarabande CD Club release).
Note: If you think you recognize the track 'Revolution and Hyperspace' but you know it's not from Aliens then you are not alone. The track was used by John McTiernan as temp music score for Die Hard. Michael Kamen thought that it fit so well that he actually used it because the cues were ditched from the Aliens score.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27
This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.
Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04
Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.
Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.
Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28
There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)
Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04
As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.
One Night Only .......2006-07-19
I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

There's no shortage of bad dreams on this follow-up to Balance, Swollen Members' full-length debut (and indie-hip-hop success story). Take, for instance, "Anthrax Island," recorded pre-September 11, 2001. It's not enough that the narrator is on said island--he's a cannibal, too! The title track is just as scary, thanks to producer Alchemist and some spooky keyboards. But Bad Dreams isn't all doom and gloom, as the Vancouver act's Mad Child and Prevail take on such topics as cross-border rapping (in "RPM") and the virtues of late-night recording ("Deep End"). The two have plenty of help, particularly from the Dilated Peoples crew--MCs Evidence and Iriscience and DJ Babu contribute to a number of tracks, including "RPM" and "Full Contact." Other guests include DJ Revolution, who contributes some thrilling turntable action to the Snap!-sampling "Take It Back"; Rattlesnake Jones (you've gotta love that tag); and Chris Guy, who adds extra spice to the flamenco guitar stylings of "Snake Bite." But Mad Child and Prevail really prove their flow on "Ventilate," which finds the MCs trading insults in an electric, funny dialogue and the ultracatchy "Fuel Injected." The meditative "High Road" wraps things up with Zen-like calm, and hints at even better things to come from this rock-steady West Coast hip-hop crew. --Shawn Conner

COULD'VE BEEN BETTER.......2006-05-19
lyricaly the album is on point, but the production is weak.there ARE songs that bang but the majority are tainted by grade B production.imo worth checking out if you listen for lyrics, but if you only check for beats then you might be disappointed.
Swollen Members Rawest Album.......2006-04-18
If you know anything about underground hip hop then you should of heard of these cats. When I first purchased this disc a few years ago I played it none stop. This is that Hip Hop that skateboarders can vibe off of.Its dark but not to the point that you have to be some gothic dude to feel. Its production along with the scratchin put it up there with that east coast feel. There isnt any weak material on the album but it will get 4 stars from me because 1.it doesnt bring anything new and 2.it will not go down as a classic but thats not important. With all these cats bringin cell phone ringtone beats and braga boast lyrics to the masses its nice to see someone do it for the true hip hop heads.I do not write these reviews because I lack that thing called a life.I write them to support the real and get the word out on bangin albums.I wish more people would do the same.In the mist of all the wackness I need some recommendations yall.
A good underground rap album that isn't for everyone (most will like "Deep End") - kind've sissy sounding.......2006-01-05
Swollen Members' "Bad Dreams" is a good rap album. Every track here is fun and catchy which certainly helps the flow of the album. The only complaints I think I could make here are that the rappers are a little "sissy" sounding (you'll see what I mean - it has the same problems that Sweatshop Union's "Natural Progression" has), the lyrics are pretty subpar and the album is uneven. The lyrics are sometimes fun (though they aren't really about anything), but the songs that MAKE this good are "Deep End" and to an extent "Anthrax Island". "Anthrax Island", but most notably "Deep End", are essentially lost underground rap classics that alone earn this a "4". Except for these two songs this is only for underground rap fans. Recommended for hip-hop heads (mainstream rap fans probably won't like this, though).
Highlights include:
"Killing Spree"
"Full Contact"
"Take It Back"
"Camouflage"
"Poker Face"
"Deep End"
"Anthrax Island"
"Burns And Scars"
"Dark Riders" (sort of)
"Fuel Injected"
"High Road"
Impressive.......2005-03-13
About 3 1/2 - 4 years ago I discovered Swollen Members. Being the typical 7th grader I was, I wasn't interested in music that much if at all. When I first heard Fuel Injected on the radio I was entranced. Let's just say music has been important to me since that moment.
Out of all SM's CDs, Bad Dreams has been definetly the most impressive they've built a solid fan base because of this recording.
They are also amazing live, mhm.
Pick up the CD, it's well worth it
Great album.......2004-11-07
This album is HOT!! Heavy was a bit better, but all the Swollen's stuff is worth picking up. Mad Child is fun to listen to, and Moka Only is a savage.
And for the record, Kevin Barker, you mentioned only on band with a person who can do anything except sing exceptionally well, that being Led Zeppelin with Jimmy Page. You neglected to mention bands with actually talented musicians, like The Pppers, RATM, and Dire Straits.

Funky Icelandic alternative at its best.......2002-05-28
Do you like Garbage, Veruca Salt, and Björk? How about them all put together? Say hello to Unun, a band formed by Björk's ex-husband Thor Eldon. Super Shiny Dreams is a English version of the band's 1994 album Ae, which was voted Album of the year in Iceland. The music varies greatly- the tracks "Unun", "I See Red", and "SOS Aurora" are all punkish, while the rest of the tracks are all different. Fans of the Cardigans will like "Premiere", while those who like Garbage will like the quickness of "Ve La Gonssezze!". Another plus is that Heida Eiriksdottir, the lead singer, is like Bjork, but a little less crazy and not so accented. 'Cubes fans will appreciate the seldom screaming of Dr. Gunni, as compared to the crazy ranting of Einar Orn. Go out and buy this- it's worth it.

Superb Operetta Collection.......2006-09-12
Surely this must be the finest collection of songs in Enlgish from operettas and early 20th century musicals available anywhere. Marilyn Hill Smith is in fine voice and is admirably partnered by baritone Peter Morrison. This two CD collection is truly a 'treasure.' It belongs in the collection of any English speaking lover of operetta.

Customer Reviews:
Review of Americans in London.......2006-03-09
The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.

Album Description
Master rapper/storytellers Ply and Reaper take the listener through a night journey of uncomfortable topics and stories of human struggle. Nightmare after nightmare, they paint scenarios in a way that we can easily imagine them, but don't really want to. Their style has been called "shadow psychology rap" by reviewers, but the two rappers themselves simply call it "storytelling".
A sparse and fluid mix of hip-hop and rock styles provides the background to compelling lyrics(written out in the booklet for anyone interested). Mark McKnight provides the basslines, haunting enough to stick in anyone's mind, and Sanjuro provides the production. The CD has already inspired sold-out shows, where Reaper and Ply mesmerize the audience with their unusual theatrical style. There is a sense of love for humanity throughout the whole album, but you can tell these two spent a lot of time working with the mentally insane. Don't put it on for bedtime.
Bad Dreams is a milestone in hip-hop music. Even if this is the only time these two rappers will ever collaborate, we should thank them for pushing the limits of the genre.
This project is dedicated to healthcare workers everywhere.
