Editorial Reviews About the Artist
If you follow the QB scene, you might know Littles already. Raised in Queens Bridge, on the 41st side of Vernon, Alfredo Bryan, aka "Littles" is definitely the Best of the Block. Littles, who's known to QB as Lil' Lord, dabbled heavily in the drug game, along with his partner Killa Black in the early 90s. His main goal at the age of fifteen was getting money in the streets along with his partner.
In 1998, Littles immediately embarked on his mission, recording joints with fellow MCs; Raekwon, Nature, Nas, and Mobb Deep. Time paid off as Littles' matured with his cocky flow and grimy rotten apple street-parables. It helped win him cameo appearances later on Prodigy's solo gold album, "H.N.I.C.", Mobb Deep's "Infamy", which sold 1.5 million, and their latest 2004 "Amerikaz Nightmare" release, Tragedy Khadafi's , "Still Reporting", Nas' platinum album, "The QB Finest", "Lake presents The 41st Side" and Virgin 2, Billy Crawford, 3 x's platinum album. Littles has also featured and appears on over 600 street mixtapes and/or DVD's this year (at least that we can account for).
Refusing to sign to a major label and play the label waiting game, Littles decided to work independently and developed, Best of the Block Inc. He pressed up and hit the road, to self market his debut album and very first CD/DVD combo ever pressed, "The Feeding", from the trunk of his rental car. He promoted his company and album through local radio and live shows. "The Feeding" did not just come with nineteen tracks of war rhetoric, but also a home DVD where Littles took us on the road with him and Mobb Deep as well as into the lion's den in Queens Bridge. The album features production from Alchemist, Havoc (of Mobb Deep), Sha Self, and EZ Elpee. "The Feeding" also features appearances from Mobb Deep, Big Noyd, and Tragedy Khadafi as well. Littles has also distributed "The Infamous Allegiance Part 1 & 2", an up close and personal DVD/CD featuring Hip Hop super group Mobb Deep at Prodigy and Havoc. "The American Dream"CD/DVD, "Gun Love", "The Best of Littles and his latest! DVD release "The Dime-Frontstage", which includes footages of Mobb Deep's "Amerikaz Nightmare" album release he booked and promoted and his new release "Reloaded" CD/DVD. Mobb Deep was so impressed with his work, that in 2004, they replaced their management of 12 years, Chris Lighty, of Violator Records, and made Littles, not only their new manager, but Senior VP Infamous Records, their joint venture on Jive. Littles' is currently in the studio wrapping up his debut official major release album "The Streets Will Listen", which he is shopping to find the best home for. This CD/DVD features production from Havoc of Mobb Deep, who is also the co executive producer, Emile, Goody & Sha Self. Featuring artist are, Jazz (from Dru Hill), Petey Pablo, Havoc, Tragedy Khadafi, Rass Kass, Raekwon, and others alike.

Excellent transaction. Would not hesitate to buy again from this seller. Product was delivered promptly and as described.
good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02
This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.
Great CD.......2005-11-01
This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.
Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27
This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.
I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.
Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.
Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08
This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of
the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have
done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some
of which still show some of their age, but come across quite
well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this
disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to
get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any
more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to
try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's
early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.
If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!
The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07
I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.
I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.
I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

this is a good album.......2007-05-17
This is a good album. It is not the classic that Deja Vu is, but the qualities that made them great are still there. The harmonies that are unmatched, good rockers from Young, Still's love songs that you tap your feet to, the brooding introspective "Compass" from Crosby. Nash does get real preachy, but he still has a way with a melody. There is some art that pales in comparison to the Mona Lisa, but is still great art. The same goes here.
CSNY's weakest effort.......2007-03-31
This is CSN&Y's weakest album. It has a few good songs on it, the best being Still's "Got It Made" which recalls their classic style and harmonies. Young's "American Dream" is ok, but nowhere near his best work. The rest of it is pretty mediocre. 60's hippies trying to renew their protest movement in the late 80's. It just doesn't work.
This CD is only recommended for avid CSNY fans.
Great Album.......2006-08-18
Bending from traditonal CSN and CSNY music but still a very good album.
Overlooked and undervalued.......2006-02-17
American Dream is my favorite CSNY album; actually, it's my favorite CSN album as well. That notwithstanding, Neil Young is a major reason for this album's beauty and staying-power. After spending most of the '80s making worthless trash, Young returned to song-writing form here and then made a solo comeback with Freedom the following year.
This album could have been done by Stills, Nash & Young (and guest-featuring David Crosby). Crosby doesn't do much at all on this album besides contributing two tracks, the introspective gentle acoustic "Compass" and the anti-military rant "Nighttime for the Generals." Maybe Crosby was recovering from one of his legendary drug binges.
Most of the material was written and played by Stills, Nash and Young. Graham Nash wrote most of the political material on this album: "Shadowland," which continues the theme of "Nighttime for the Generals," the environmentalist plea "Clear Blue Skies" and the naively hopeful "Soldiers of Peace." The problem with "can't we all just get along" songs like this is that there are no people with similar views in the Islamofascist world, or if there are, their voices are quickly stilled by state repression and drowned out in the cacophony of America-hatred. Nash is a sentimental hippie, but he does have a lovely voice and he can write simple love songs as well - "Don't Say Goodbye."
Stephen Stills has a powerful rock voice and shines on his tracks, "Got it Made," Drivin' Thunder," "That Girl" and "Night Song" (three of which were co-written by Young). But the real musical beauty of this album comes from the songs performed by Neil Young. From the simple bass guitar-driven satire of a fallen televangelist in "American Dream," to the lovely acoustic guitar on "Feel Your Love," Young is simply pleasing to the ear. Even his political writing here - "Name of Love" - is not heavy-handed but just a simple exhortation. It could have come from Jesus. "This Old House" is also a beautiful but sad track about a family losing its home.

Very Strong Comeback.......2007-06-20
I honestly was not that impressed with 'Back to the World'. There were some great cuts like "In Defense of Dorchester", "A Tale of Mass Deception", "Stagger", but for some reason it just seemed like it was lacking the extra bit of life that drove 'Savin Hill'.
Whatever worries I might have had were shredded by 'Fading American Dream'. It is a tough, honest, fat-free recording fully showcasing a confident band that means business. The Street Dogs' rhythm section has always been strong, but here the guitars sound rejuvenated and utterly menacing, and somehow seem to increase the effortless ferocity of Mike's vocals. He has without a doubt the perfect voice for this band's sound.
The material here is consistent, and as a whole nothing feels out of place. Highlights include the fiery opener "Common People", "Fatty", "Tobe's Got a Drinking Problem", "Rights to Your Soul", the really cool "Hard Luck Kid" and the title track. Honorable mentions go to Billy Bragg's "There is Power in the Union" and the startlingly convincing (in an era where a lot of artists sing about this topic) "Final Transmission".
As you can see, most of the tracks are pretty good. Hopefully I have enticed you to enough to check this album out.
Stunningly Great CD.......2007-04-19
I bought this because I loved Do or Die and would have been happy with this CD if it had been pretty good. Instead this recording far exceeded my expectations. Mike's passion for what he believes in is clear on every song but the band never forgets that this is a punk record. This is everything I expect from a punk album - heart felt compassion for the middle and working classes and expletives hurled at the ruling class - all that with a driving guitar rich beat.
great buy.......2007-01-11
I was totally impressed how fast the shipping was and how great the price was I would purchase again from the seller
A huge Step forward for the Street Dogs.......2007-01-07
This cd is absolutely amazing. The dogs have created a cd where every song on the album is brilliant. Every song is written and played with heart and soul. The standouts would be sell your lies, final transmission and fading american dream. If you love smart punk, get this cd!
Punk with heart.......2006-12-02
I bought this album after wandering around one night in Chicago. I haven't been able to stop playing it since. I've also peddled backwards and found every other Street Dogs album. They fit the bill as a nearly perfect punk band and this album may be their best yet.
But what I really love besides the street punk sound and high energy shows is the fact that everytime I listen to this record I feel like the band/McColgan really cares about everything they/he sings about. When he sings "Fatty" I feel like he gets the pain of that isolated kid, he strongly believes in the "Power of a Union," he really is fighting for the "Common People," and by god, Tobe really might have a drinking problem. It's so very rare to hear music with such tenacity, passion and especially heartfelt honesty. The only shame here is that more people haven't heard them yet.

Television Meets Psych Rock Meets Spaghetti Western.......2007-06-19
Each of the Paisley Underground bands seemed to have their own little slant on the sounds of the movement, which was about bringing guitar-driven, psychedelic music back to the fore in the synth-heavy 80s. True West's bent was a little hard to figure. There were the duelling guitar wizards, Tolman and McGrath, who sounded more like Verlaine and Lloyd than any 1960s guitarists. There was the feeling of the old West, not just in the band's name but in their sound and feel - something that put you in mind of tan chinos, shoe boots with spurs, shots of rye at the local saloon, and lots of dirt. Then there was the psychedelic thing - the cover of Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam," the sometimes trippy lyrics, the spiralling guitar lines . . . In the liner notes to this compilation of True West's best material, it is suggested that they hit their peak on the full-length album, Drifters. But that album, despite its excellent opening track, "Look Around," pales in comparison to the EP, Hollywood Holiday. The eight songs on the EP represented all of the best elements of True West - the songs seem fresh, they keep you guessing what might come next, each one has its own little angle on the whole picture the band was presenting then. The album, meanwhile, gets tired after the third or fourth track, and feels like a labor from there. And the three tracks produced by Tom Verlaine thrown on at the end are notweworthy for historical reference, but otherwise pretty unremarkable. If you were into the Paisley Underground thing when it was happening, or if you just like guitar-heavy psychedelic rock, you will absolutely want to pick up this CD. Just be prepared to hear a combination of inspired gems and sludge.
Making The World Safe For Guitars.......2007-06-15
Back in the early-mid '80s, there was talk that the electric guitar was going to go the way of the dinosaur and the dodo bird to replaced by keyboards, computers and things. Bands like True West took a stand and helped save the six-string from the onslaught of the MIDI monster. The dueling guitar duo of Richard McGrath and Russ Tolman was on par with Television's Verlaine and Lloyd, in fact Tom Verlaine was so impressed with True West that he produced three tracks, which are luckily included as bonus tracks on this two-for reissue of the band's first two albums: Hollywood Holiday and Drifters. Drawing inspiration from Syd Barrett era Floyd, 40s film noir, the Beck and Page era Yardbirds, late night 80s cable TV, the San Francisco Sound, and the Mercury space program, True West created a couple classic albums that sound fresh and vital today.
Great 80's psychedelic.......2007-06-11
I own both the original EP and LP on vinyl, the EP is more feedback laden, the LP was, I don't know, more laid back, but w/good dual guitar songs. Both EP and LP appear to be on this CD, so enjoy!

Extremely disappointing.......2007-02-03
Not even close in quality to the band's two proceeding albums, "With the Tides," and "From Here On In," "Adventures etc." is almost painful to listen to at times. Besides the excellent "A Place in Displacement" (reminiscent of later New Order), and the very good "What Holds Us" - both of which would have fit in better in "With the Tides" - "Adventures" plods along with unmemorable songs which are downright schmaltzy at times.
Some songs have their moments and then suddenly morph into cloying melodies (case in point "Habit of a Lifetime"). "You Are One" starts off promisingly enough and the devolves into a rather ordinary pop song. "Know Yourself," plagiarizes The Jesus and Mary Chain's fluffy but infectious "Sometimes Always," and makes it even more fluffy and decidedly uninfectious. The chorus is rousing enough in "Safety in Numbers," but the rest of the song looses me. After "What Holds Us," the album just turns deadly dull.
It's possible that I might start liking more of "Adventures" with repeated listening (and as mentioned above, I do love track 6 and like track 8 alot), but the previous two albums grabbed me right away, and made me into a South fan, which I remain despite this rather weak offering. I'm hoping that the band's next album returns South to the extremely compelling band that they have already proven they can be with the excellent "From Here on In," and "With the Tides." I also look forward to seeing the band live.
My Opinions.......2007-01-25
First of all i would like to start out by saying that this album will grow on you, and is worth the purchase alone for tracks 1 and 6. I would also like to point out that this review is solely based on this album as i have not heard the other two..
I first heard South on Fuel T.V. (for those that don't know is an action sports channel) ..heard two tracks from this album and was immediately hooked.. Upon first listening, "A Place in Displacement" is reminiscent of early New Order, and definitely heavily influenced by the likes of U2, especially Joel Cadbury's vocals.
Anyways, the album definitely comes out swinging with one of the strongest, catchiest tracks in the bunch in "shallow" .. it starts off with a bitchin' drum pattern, some guitar work, and from there takes you right to heaven, with a chorus straight out of a 'Bloc Party' how to rock Indie style manual. Also to deny any Stars influence on track 1 & 2 alone would be an outright lie. I'd really like to see the BSS/Metric/Stars personnel collaborate with this band.. it would be magical.
Track three reminds me of the doves, and the musicianship is fresher than a virgin in a refrigerator. the band as a cohesive unit reaches dazzling heights, (Doves-Pounding) but at times i wish they would draw out some of their compositions, as they are amazing but sometimes don't leave me as satisfied as i would like to be. It seems as though some songs may be too structured, and they should just jam the [...] out..
I love the guitar work on "Know Yourself" and the lyrics are equally as compelling and insightful. gosh i love the end of this song, but again i wish it would go on for longer.
This brings me to track 6, possibly the best out of the bunch. Oh man the feelings i get when the drums kick in with the bass line and that guitar lick.. ohhhhh that guitar lick, its orgasmic, that's what heaven is right there folks, you just got a taste. The chorus is equally as tight, in which the nostalgia kicks in. (Again, heavy new order and U2 sound, yet original in it's own right).
The Opening sequence of "Safety in Numbers" sounds like a Pinback tune with a little "Cure", a Pixies bassline, some Thom Yorke vocal inspiration (minus the whining--"i can't"/Pablo Honey) and a dash of early Radiohead added in for good measure. But it doesn't stay that way for long, which is essentially what i love about this record, These guys were obviously inspired just like any other artist, yet (i'm goin' out on a limb here) they have their own sound and aren't afraid to experiment with sound a little. Their all over the fret board map. Instead of staying in one key, they unexpectedly just switch it up at their leisure, and burst into a chorus reminiscent of bloc party or the doves.. maybe something entirely different (i still can't put my finger on it)..You might see what I mean.
On "What Holds Us", it is almost impossible to distinguish Cabury's voice from Bono. I like the music itself, it's sort of hazy and dreamy, and i love the lead and acoustic.. it's a nice comedown sort of track. A huge contrast between the more energetic numbers. It's also frustrating because i can't figure out what this song reminds me of.. this band incorporates sooo many different sounds into their music.. it's truly amazing. (the end of the song reminds me of "the books").
"Up Close and Personal" borrows some texture and melody out of the Beatles Catalogue, (Abbey Road to be precise).. but then just explodes into a little doves action, back to beatles, then to doves, then some more beatles with added drums, then they just kinda do their own thing.. i absolutely love how cohesive this band is. a touch of interpol sets in before the end, all in all a good song..
"Meant to Mean" reminds me of Mice Parade, especially the female vocals and keyboard flutterings, and the lead guitar (hell the whole second part of the song) resembles a modest mouse tune, probably something off of their newest album good news for people that love bad news ("The World at Large" perhaps?).
The last track definitely borrows a bit from Badly Drawn Boy, a calm, downtempo closer to a truly gorgeous album. Not a note is wasted throughout, and if you like any of the artists/bands mentioned.. then i highly recommend checking these guys out, because there is something for everyone if you really strip down the music and listen.
Can't wait to hear their other two albums, as i myself wanted to hear some more jamming and rocking out..
Excellent Album Showcases Trios Strengths.......2006-08-30
South is a trio from London, England that have been playing together since 1998.
Adventures In The Underground Journey To The Stars is their third full album, and is without doubt their most straight-forward pop effort, in a good and accessible way. The opening track is neither brilliant nor irritating and is filled with easy to take echoing vocals, a fast-tempo beat, and soothing "aaahoooo" background vocals. This track shows some affinity with bands such as
Doves,
Better Than Ezra, and
Snow Patrol.
The album picks up with a really strong 3rd track,
You Are One, that has a great melody, catchy guitar, and high quality supporting percussion and bass. Aside from the 30 seconds of "subway sounds" filler at the end, this is a song that I can imagine getting wide radio airplay. The music in
Pieces Of A Dream shows some similarities to one of my currently favourite bands,
Elbow, but the vocals are softer and closer to
Jimi Goodwin from
Doves. It's a mixture that works really well and makes for great bedroom listening. The next track
Know Yourself is percussion-free, acoustical guitar-based duet sung with
Pearl Lowe that has a slight slant toward alt-country. The seventh track,
Safety In Numbers, has a vague 60's influence from bands like
The Zombies or
Status Quo.
The clincher is the ninth track,
Up Close And Personal, that starts out in such a way that it reminds me heavily of some of my favourite
Badly Drawn Boy songs, but then within a minute gains its own unique feel. Although my opinion of this CD seems to change after each listen, at the moment, this is the track that keeps me coming back to have another listen.
The songs on this album are well placed in relation to each other. A slightly weaker middle section is surrounded by stronger tracks, with the best tracks placed carefully at track 3 and track 9. This means that any lulls in the CD are short and the strength of the next few songs brings you back into music. This entire album has made it into my current leisure-time listening rotation.
Adventures in the "Journey".......2006-06-12
South is is one of those great bands that not enough people know about, with their sleepy mixture of downtempo and Britpop. It's a shame that a lot of people say, "Who?" when I mention them.
And their brilliant music continues in their third full-length album "Adventures in the Underground Journey to the Stars." They take tight melodies and solid songwriting, mix it up with some lush electronic backdrops, and produce some truly beautiful music. Yes, it really is that good.
The album opens with traffic, echoing footsteps, a train going by, and doors opening --probably the London tube. Then the drums kick in, a solid guitar riff blossoms out, and Joel Cadbury murmurs over a swirling melody: "Give in to love it's the one thing we have/Hold out your laugh see the beauty within/I know the way but you won't be the first/Don't mean there's no pain.... There must be more to love than this..."
It's a strong opener, and it leads in to a bunch of other really good songs. All types: expansive indie rock that commands "don't take yourself so seriously," electro-tinged rock'n'roll, and some swirling darker numbers that sound like a rainy night in a London park, just as the stars come out.
But the guys also explore some less-travelled musical territory. There's the twangy countryish "Know Yourself," and a couple songs have swirling, twinkly electronica. The album stays spellbinding right up through the finale, where Cadbury murmurs, "One thing after another/Safe in the knowledge that we are flesh and bone/As beautiful as the first day..."
South has only had two albums before this one, but with "Adventures in the Underground...," they reach new levels. These guys can tackle all sorts of music: moody indierock, lush shoegazer, swirly atmospherics, electronic-edged folkpop, and any imaginable blend of the above. And what's more, they can do it well.
If you stripped away the trappings and keyboards, the swirling guitars and solid basslines would still be there. The drumming is subtle and flexible, although sometimes the more prominent instruments make it hard to hear. Most impressively, keyboards and guitars actually seem to melt together until it's hard to tell just where one ends and the other begins, which adds to the dreaminess of it all.
Joel Cadbury's voice gets better with each album. At first he sounded kind of hesitant, and now he sounds smooth and confident enough to tackle the sadness, loneliness, and the love in these songs. "Sing my way through life/Fear it hides my smile/If eyes are windows too/the soul I see in you..." he croons over a driving rock rhythm.
With "Adventures in the Underground Journey to the Stars," South explores new territory while staying close to their electro-edged Britpop. An enchanting, bittersweet experience.
Yes, this is a comfortable sounding release by South.......2006-06-01
I'm not exactly sure I like it as much as their two previous records, but it certainly has a certain amount of their charm and musicianship, it just doesn't sound as sonically expansive as their last two records and I can understand why they didn't do that, but I wish they would've kept exploring sounds since they were continuing to get a more muscular sound while continuing their soft acoustic style on a number of tracks. I'll give it a few more listens and see whether I feel positive about my feelings or not, it's just different, that's all, and not the different that I immediately like.

OK.......2005-03-17
Good CD, especially if you're a fan of Mark O'Conner. I have to admit that a couple of the tracks seem rather directionless (in a Vaughn Williams sort of way) and I tend to lose interest, but other tracks are fun, even exciting. The production is excellent throughout.
Great Music.......2004-02-27
I watched the documentary and heard Mark O'Connor play this piece in a concert and loved it immediately. The music is great to help the battles come alive but great for just listening to anyway.
GREAT SOUNDTRACK!.......2003-07-04
Fine CD full of great pieces of music from a great miniseries! Full of patriotism! I highly recommend it! Grade: A+
Finest Music Ever Heard.......2002-03-27
I heard this music on the excellent P B S Documentary: "Liberty - the American Revolution" and I knew I had to have it! It is the finest music I have heard, capturing the heart and soul of the American Revolution. The documentary "Liberty" was a masterpiece that was beautiful and moving. So too this music with its most wonderful arrangements and accompaniment. I love it! I could hardly wait to get it in the mail. It framed the documentary (which I also bought) like a great frame compliments a beautiful canvas painting. Superlatives fail me. This music must be experienced by first watching the great series on the American Revolution and then by listening to it apart. This is some of the most wonderful music I have ever heard. It reminds me of the genius of Aaron Copland who wrote the Applachian Spring and Rodeo suites.
Stirring Americana.......2001-11-10
This CD stands on its own merits as good music, not simply as music for a TV show. It evokes images of America old and new. O'Connor's violin carries us from the dance hall to the battlefield to the sorrow of lover's lost. Simple melodies twist and turn, rising up from their solid American roots. James Taylor's solemn rendition of "Johnny's Gone for a Soldier"is as true a telling of the grief of the soldier lost to war today as it was hundreds of years ago. Sit in a comfortable chair in the warm light of evening and let it surround you. To know where we have come from offers hope that the magic of freedom and liberty will not desert us in these troubled times.
