5 out of 5 stars Alias le Cinquième As.......2006-06-11

This album speaks. It speaks about different messages, whether it be the current hostility of the world, where people resort to using missiles to end crises, or if it's about a modern girl... how she spends her cash money.

In this album, the MC's beats progress... to somewhat of a mix between classic and modern. He recorded this album in Russia, which explains the Cyrillic symbols decorated over the case and the CDs themselves (plural if you get the Limited Edition). Many of the songs on "Mach 6" are filled with orchestrations: a quartet in "Souvenir", among other things, like consistent fusions of hip-hop and symphony.

I found this CD wasn't the same as Cinquieme As... not all artists' efforts come off that way. Most notably, MC Solaar's just about the only person on this album. Sure, he's got his choruses covered by Eric K-Roz, Audrey Chanu, and Julia Sarr, but there's one thing missing... the same kingly spirit of Cinquieme As. Of course, if you want to take it back a bit, nothing about the man himself has changed. He's just cooling down, and it is here he makes wise introspection his number one task. From what I understand, he was pissed off when he made Cinquieme As.

Production is handled solely by Claude MC (that's Solaar), Eric K-Roz, and Alain J. That being said, there's not as much diversity in the beats or liveliness as there was in Cinquieme As (as part of that progression from hip-hop to classic-hop). "La Vie est Belle" is a classic, though, following in the footsteps of "Solaar Pleure" in more than one way. But, as for sounds, you've got the aforementioned, and a bit of jazz worked in with "J'Connais Mon Role".

Another thing that's really interesting is the fact that Solaar took lines from Cinquieme As and made them into new songs. "Hijo de Africa"? That's Spanish, as mentioned in "Hasta la Vista Mi Amor". "Jardin d'Eden"? Mentioned in/sampled from "Solaar Pleure". And, there's probably some I haven't caught yet. If you manage to get past that, you'll find that this is a solid album. I've caught myself waiting for another album that probably isn't coming.

Despite all of the times I might have implied that Cinquieme As may be the better album, I can always find myself coming back to the tranquility and simplicity of Mach 6 (I had it first). Consider it taken down a few notches... 'cause, there really is nothing bad coming from this album.

Either way, if you want this one, get it now... because, it is one of the cheapest listed here; and, you'd be surprised how quickly these Solaar albums sell out.

5 out of 5 stars Very Groovy.......2006-03-09

I first heard MC Solaar on Sex and the City. This CD is funky and beautiful. It's hip hop with an international flair.

5 out of 5 stars More catchier than earlier work, but still edgy.......2004-04-21

If the first song on Cinquieme As, "Solaar Pleure" was an eloquent description of hate and despair, then it's opposite can be found in "Jardin d'Eden" on Mach 6. In fact, all of Mach 6 seems to be a lighter, more positive album in response to the darkness and hardness of Cinquieme As. Indeed, in some tracks on Mach 6 he samples songs from Cinquieme As, as if to bring out the contrast between these two, seemingly polar opposite, albums. Don't get me wrong. I liked Cinquieme As, but it was heavy (in terms of sound, lyrics, mood). But what Solaar has lost in heaviness of sound, he hasn't lost in edginess. On the surface, Mach 6 is peppier, with more upbeat rhythms and catchy tunes, but don't let that fool you. The lyrics are just as serious and thought-provoking as they have always been. The music sounds happier, but Solaar is his same old cynical but eloquent self.

Another thing that struck me about Mach 6 is its more international flavor. "Au Pays du Ghandi" picks up Indian beats, while "Cash Money" is a great modern samba, and "Hijo d'Africa" is one of the best Afro-Latin songs I've ever heard. This is not the first time Solaar has used ethnic sounds and patterns, but it's the first time he's been able to do so beyond the superficial level. In Mach 6, Solaar proves that he understands the music of other cultures, that he can break it down, explore its nuances, and then re-construct it in his own way.

If you like Solaar, this is a must-own album. Truly brilliant, from a brilliant musician.

5 out of 5 stars Mach 6 Great album!!!.......2004-01-13

MC Solaar does it again. Mach 6 is a great album from start to finish. I have only had a chance to listen to it a few times so far, but its fast becoming my favorite album of his . It was worth every dollar... if you liked Fifth Ace, this one is a must get.

5 out of 5 stars The best French Rap CD ever recorded.......2005-06-05

This is probably the best french rap disc ever recorded. The disc originally came out in 1994 which was probably one of the peak years for worldwide rap prodiction in terms of quality. This is the best album MC Solaar has ever recorded. If you like Dubmatique, French Affair, or numerous other groups in the past and present Quebec mainstream, you will love this one. Obsolete and Relations Humaines are especially good. This is one of the few CD's I've ever purchased in which every song on the disc is quality. I would recommend it to anyone. Even if you are not fluent in French you will be enhanced by the rythms.

5 out of 5 stars mc solaar, mc sogreat.......2004-03-07

disregard the 1 star ratings as they are probably 1 star folk. heard this superb album the first time back in the good ole days of 1994 and still love it. all tracks good, some tracks are great. i still wonder why such talent can't make a spot on the charts here.

= The Greatest Sex Music Ever
    Reviewer: bilbo from Seattle WA
Here is what I did: I took "Lover's Rock" and "Diamond Life" and "The Best of Sade" and "Seal" and a French Rap CD called "Prose Combat" by MC Solaar, put them all in my 5-CD changer and put it on automatic shuffle. I had this girl over for dinner who I met in a department store when I was downtown shopping. I got some oysters from the fish store, sliced 'em open on the half-shell, cracked open a bottle of Asti Spumante (that's Italian Champagne) and dimmed the lights. This whole scenario was straight out of this book I read called "9 Free Secrets of New Sensual Power" which is basically some kind of sex-memoir/instruction book for higher consciousness, that is DOPE! So she comes over and I light some candles, we start dancing to all that Sade music and that killer-sexy French rap (that the guy in the book also turned me onto,) and one thing just naturally led to another, just like it said he would -- and that's basically all I can say in this "family" environment, except that I WORSHIP Sade! She is God's gift to guys who want to get l--d!

5 out of 5 stars Just learning the language, but loving the music.......2002-09-29

I am in my fourth year of French in High School, and my teacher started playing some french rap because he knew it would be interesting to us if it was rap and had a good beat... he was right, I fell in love with Solaar's music right away. Not only does it help me to learn the language more fluently, but I truly enjoy listening to it. I'm begging my mom to buy me all of his CD's :)

5 out of 5 stars Formidable.....my single favorite rap album of all time........2003-07-18

This dude has the gift. His lyrics are outstanding. Anyone who's heard him knows it. I learned as much french from this guy as I did from 6 years of class. Even if you're not into French the cadence is undeniably entertaining. And his dj is awsome too. All the tracks are cool. The best on this cd include Quartier Nord, l' Historie d' Art and Bouge de la of course. Take my recomendation for what its worth, but this guy was ahead of his time. If he rapped in English, forget it, he be up there in popularity with anyone.......Anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Treat: Not quite like any other rap you've ever heard.......2001-08-13

THIS DISC IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE PREMIUM IMPORT PRICE! It's definitely my favorite MC Solaar disc & one of my best rap CDs, period. It doesn't matter if you don't speak a word of French (I remember a little from 2 semesters in high-school), the sounds and rythm are so intricate and energetic that they more than make up for the jokes and whatever meaning you fail to pick up from the cognates, tone, and musical context.

Also, consider picking up Planet Rap, before it goes out of print. And Tour De La Question is a good 2-disc (live) sampling of many of Solaar's hits. I find his other later releases less compelling than this one.

BTW, if it helps, I should note that I find this disc somewhat reminiscent of good 80's rap.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD, if you've made it this far! You won't regret it.......2001-05-31

Claude MC has an amazing gift. His ability to use language, sound, rythym & music to convey a message, at times one that is socially or politically charged, is exceptional. Somehow, in the midst of a song such as "l'Histoire de l'Art," which really flows, the idea that rappers have been discrimated against by certain elements of society who fail to see rap as an art form is introduced. Solaar, using humor, wit, an outstanding intellect and his sheer charisma, easily and non-confrontationally makes the point that the history of art is not complete until it includes the works of ALL artists. Bien Fait, Claude MC, Bravo!

The background tracks are for the most part smooth. A bit of a jazz & blues feel to them (perhaps its the saxophone) mixed with more elements familiar to modern hip hop and rap. This juxtaposition is transfixing.

Although I myself am a French speaker, I find that you do not need to know the language to enjoy Solaar's music. Fluency in the French language, however, does allow you to appreciate his music that much more as you can fully experience the joy of this gifted musician from Senegal's play with language. His lyrics are so full of such wit and irony!

Somehow I can't seem to take this CD out of my car stereo. I guess that its just so good that I want to listen to this CD at every chance I get (and its been over a year since I purchased it!)

I would highly recommend MC Solaar's Qui Seme le Vent Recolte le Tempo to anyone even thinking of buying it. If you've made it to this page, put it in your shopping cart. I promise that you will have no regrets.

I've had this album for about a month now, having heard "qui sème le vent" and my favourite song keeps changing. Initially it was "Victime de la mode" with the bit "Dominique, écoutes bien ce funky beat" and the message of the story. Then it was Bouge de la (part 1)

and now, tonight, it's "Caroline" This song is beautiful, heartfelt, sweet, elegant, etc etc. I'm sure tomorrow it will be another song that will capture my ear. I find myself singing/thinking about the phrases from other songs consistently- there are a lot of great little bits of philosophy. "J'ai dû disparaître, pour réapparaître"

5 out of 5 stars Why French Hip-Hop is to be taken seriously.......2005-06-20

The soundtrack of the film La Haine is a document on where French Hip Hop is today. The film is on the tension in the concrete jungle in Paris. The tension being mostly between the Police and the people living in the Suburbs. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes (the police in the cinema refused to watch and were standing with their backs turned to the screen). The CD really supplements the movie. MC Solaar, I AM and others indicate that French hiphop is a serious force It is a way in which rappers from the many cultures that make up the population in cities such as Paris and Marseille found a way to express themselves. It is of a much higher quality than L.A. style gangsta rap. The soundtrack is an excellent introduction in to this.

The only downside is that the CD does not contain the Burning and Lootin' that blasted from the cinema speakers at the start of the movie.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent French hip-hop CD.......2004-03-31

this is a must-hear! A great moment of rap music and of freedom of speech in the mid-90's. Ministere Amer's "Sacrifice de poulets" is a very good track and a milestone in the political history of French rap. French State and police sued them for that track. MC Solaar's tune was removed from last copies of the CD. I do not know why but it is a pity. "Comme dans un film" is one of his best songs, and maybe his most politically engaged - the extreme-right party Front National being hit by the MC's brilliant verbal and artistic bullets.

    5 out of 5 stars killer!.......2002-02-10

This music makes me nervous, I feel like Vincent Cassel is going to start a fight with me at any moment.

5 out of 5 stars I need to rectify this or I will never sleep!.......1999-05-11

This album is intensely excellent and is highly recommended to all. I must point out that the beloved band IAM is *not* Swiss but the pride and joy of Marseille, and yes their participation on this album "La 25ieme Image" is haunting... Sens Unik, is the Swiss band in the mix with their title "Le Vent Tourne."

5 out of 5 stars French rap & elctr. music = the salvation of the human mind.......1999-02-02

The ultimate buy ! If you adore French Music ;wether you like "Doc Gynaco" or "Daftpunk" you've got to appreciate this not-to-miss collection of 'phat'/chilling' music inspired by the astonishing movie La Haine. Most memorable moments of this CD: The increadible Swiss group "Iam" and the virtuosity of "MC Sollar" .But foremost the awesome song:(C'est) Le 25e Imagé. A supersonic trip : by far the best ever soundtrack. Even better than the proclamed Soundtracks:The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, (The Original Soundtrack) La Haine or Trainspotting.

I listen to this recording again and again. I know just enough French and Spanish to catch occasional words and phrases but I think the music and intensity would appeal even without this.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't speak a word of French....?.......2002-10-19

Don't speak a word of French? Don't worry, nor do I and I have all of Mc Solaar's CDs. I heard a track on NPR (of all things). They talked about how French hip-hop (or rap as they said) was making in-roads into the US. OK, maybe a bold statement, but Mc Solaar combines laid back beats, sexy French vocals with, well, just damn coolness. If you are reading this then buy it - you're already interested and you won't be disapointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Prose Combat.......2002-08-07

This album unveils the inner essence of French culture.
Lovely dazzling like Paris lights. But please, don't mix your astrological signs yet. The music flows as tasty a dated wine that makes you want to sip and sip without pause.
So for those who like exotic fine stuffs, this is an initiation journey.
The esoteric master of metaphor will introduce you to an inner circle of brainstorming, forming, and performing, where rare beats and well-delivered dictions coexist with the simplicity of uncut jazz and the fervor of rap.

Also be prepared to keep focus through the back alleys and twists of improvisation that Solaar aKa Mbarali has inherited from African story-telling sublimation.

Welcome to the World of refinement!

5 out of 5 stars Keeps getting better.......2001-10-31

I first listened to MC Solaar when I was in France in 1992. The album "Qui s'eme le vent" was getting airtime. I purchased that album and enjoyed it quite immensely. It was a number of year before I purchased "Prose Combat" and then "Paradisiaque". After whcih I listened to his self-titled 1998 import album which is on par with "Paradisiaque". Solaar is like fine wine - he gets better with age.

Now we have "Cinquieme AS". Solaar just keeps getting better. His mixes are diverse, at times political, and more modern on some tracks. Fortunately, the same silky smoothness permeates the album. Even if you can't understand French this guy is a must if you enjoy higher-conscious rap. You'll feel his message even if you can't fully understand it.

Ah, when Hip Hop wa still intersting! Don't have to understand French to enjoy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff by MC Solaar.......2003-09-17

This album is not as great as "Prose Combat", but all in all this is a good cd. Once again, Solaar's lyrics stand out over everything else. One thing about this album that I did'nt like that much was so many English flares to it. Such as "Wonderbra", "Daydreamin", etc... Best songs on this cd are "Paradisiaque", "Les Pensees sont des flowers", "Protege Tibia". I think American rap artists can learn a thing or two from Solaar and his lyrics, because they're lyrics are very poor and have no feel or meaning to it.

    5 out of 5 stars Solaar's best beats.......2002-01-24

THis is my favorite album of his purely for the beats. They are rips of American beats, i know, but he mixes them; combined with his flow, an all-the-way-thruer, rare for hip-hop, although not for Solaar.

    4 out of 5 stars écoutez!.......2001-11-18

Great CD. Rap and French go together like peanut butter and chocolate. These songs get stuck in your head.

5 out of 5 stars Wow... amazing and i don't even understand a word he sings.......2001-10-23

I don't speak french but i love the way it sounds, thru the emotion this CD brings I can understand most of what he expreses.
My favourite has become Paradisiaque and Caroline... amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Moving in a new direction.......2000-03-23

I enjoyed this album...but I still find "Prose Combat" and "Paradisiaque" as the best Solaar albums out there. The beats are really heavy, and I'm curious to know why he's moving in a more "Gangster Moderne" direction...away from the more lucid style of "Qui Seme le Vent"....

5 out of 5 stars MC Solaar has done it again -- another fantastic album.......1998-12-20

Anyone who thinks MC Solaar has lost a step with his new album hasn't listened very closely to it. His lyrics are as incisive and fluid as ever, and his musical style is a welcome return to the more jazzy sound found on "qui seme le vent..." This style was lost on "paradisiaque" because he only used Pigale Boom Bass as his mixer. On this latest album, he uses different DJs and the results are obvious. MC Solaar has once again demonstrated his class, style, and superiority over American rap.

4 out of 5 stars MC Solaar en évolution.......1998-12-15

    5 out of 5 stars Il n'y a qu'un MC Solaar.......1998-11-07

MC Solaar has taken all of the Paris underworld energy and shoots it up in the galaxy through the Eifel Tower. Well, MC Solaar has made maybe his best record, just listen to the "Soopa, Galaktika, Delika, Psykedelika"-"Galaktika" et tu vas comprendre. Rap in french beats any "rapper anglophone".

3 out of 5 stars Paradise lost in new album.......1998-11-01

Undoubtedly one of the best French rappers du monde, Mc solaar's new album "Mc Solaar" tends to be a watered down after effect of his grand last album "paradisiaque." While still keeping son "groove" his lyrics have lost the strength of his former songs and instead of being an overwhelming tempest of poesie, tend to emmulate the calm vespers after the storm. This C.D. tends to be just another title put out for profit and probably would have been better on the b-sides of Paradisiaque. After hearing this album one wonders just how many times Mc Solaar can rely on clichés (how many times can he work Pablo Escobar into his songs?) and perhaps life in the 16eme has taken away the sharp dark lyricism of his past, n'est ce pas?

5 out of 5 stars The Total Package.......2006-04-29

I couldn't be any happier with this three-disc compilation. There's the album, the booklet with lyrics and liner notes, and a bonus disc with a selection of instrumentals (not the selection I would have chosen, but it will suffice) and bonus tracks. Also, as the description entails, there is a bonus DVD. But, it's in PAL format... however, you should have NO problem playing it in your region 1 DVD player, as I did not.

I know, I bought the last one, so why am I telling you this? You should be informed. Of course, I had my doubts... but, Amazon came through and I was treated with what could be called a masterpiece. On more than just a few tracks, Solaar finishes his verses early so that the music can play through. Instrumental solos are common, but not in mainstream rap music.

Overall, the CD was worth the wait and the purchase, because it's the best thing I've heard all year (surely). You'd be lucky to get any kind of three-disc CD set for the price Amazon was offering, and this one made the grade. I'm shocked that the barebones edition was selling for about twice the price of this one.

    5 out of 5 stars fabulous.......2006-12-01

Actually, I didn't hear about this CD from "Sex and the City." I originally became familiar with his music three years (at age 18) ago while I was with some French friends camping in the French Alps. MC Solaar is a gifted and widely respected musician who has wonderful music. This CD has a little something for everyone-- nice and slow or good to get that groove on to. I'm glad that "Sex and the City" helped raise people's awareness of him.

    2 out of 5 stars misguided fools.......2006-03-10

Deltron Z? Automator? Kook Keith? Hip-hop in the U.S. is alive and kicking. "Intelligent" rap won't find itself on the dancefloor, which is why mainstream rap exists, whereby Tupac, Biggie Small, Emimem, Ice Cube, etc... dominate. If you want to hear about social issues, listen to Ice Cube while growing up in South Central and you'll understand. The fact is that all of you "worldly cultivated" pantsies are too lazy to look further than what the mainstream media or the Top Billboard is feeding you. Of course, you were introduced to MC Solaar by "Sex in the City". I rest my case. Nuff said.

    4 out of 5 stars Great even though I don't speak french.......2005-08-27

I have been in love with MC Solaar ever since I heard him on Sex and the City. This CD did not let me down.

    5 out of 5 stars nice.......2005-07-11

alright people, i almost NEVER listen to hip-hop, but apparently i might if i was from france. this is a really good sounding cd. i almost wish i could speak french because ive heard how much better this guy is lyrically compared to commercialized rap in the US. really smooth and melodic for the most part, as far as hip-hop goes in my mind, this is really good. dont care what language its in.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome all the way through.......2005-05-21

This cd is really awesome. it's so much better than American rap, it's more true to what rap is all about- and the way it used to be. They lyrics (i speak french) are really great and the tunes are just amazing. I don't even listen to rap music and i absolutely love this cd. i reccomend it to ANYONE!
