5 out of 5 stars A perfect album!.......2006-07-05

Wow! This is one of the best records I have bought this year (perhaps ever). In my book this is a perfect album. Each and every song is good and the best ones are extremly good, so no need to hesitate - buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome........2006-04-05

I'm a great admirer of odd music, and seek it out as often as possible, and if you describe yourself in similar terms, you must definitely buy this CD.

It's worth the price alone for the songs "Yamasuki" and "Abana Bakana." "Yamasuki" has to be the weirdest song I've ever heard. While what sounds like Japanese schoolkids sing beautifully, a karate dude screeches in the background like he's killing multiple enemies. Bizarre. "Abana Bakana" sounds like nothing else on the album, but it's alive with energy.

Inside the CD's booklet, this album is called "educational-bubblegum-multi-cultural-psycho-rock-opera," but I'd just call it an offbeat gem.

My gratitude is extended to Finders Keepers for reissuing this.

4 out of 5 stars kitsch freakout music.......2005-11-17

This album sounds like Serge Gainsbourg conducting the Langley Schools Music Project through a rendition of the Mikado. While such a pairing may sound like a supremely bad idea (especially if there were any cute girls at the Langley School and Gainsbourg just broke up with Jane Birkin), the sound on this album is really diggable.

So here's how it went down, a 70s French pop duo creates a song/dance called the Yamasuki that's a mix of the smooth funk/pop elements of the time with Japanese choruses singing the melodies, a Toshiro Mifune screaming along to the freakout bits, and hints of oriental percussion (woodblock anyone?), the kids go crazy for the single, so the duo figures why not make an album? While the kitsch of it all wears thin by the end of its 12 tracks, each song on here deserves at least one good listen.

Put this in and watch your friends' expressions at the sheer coolness of "Kono Samouri" with its matched wails of some Tatsuya Nakadai-aping Japanese cat and the funky wa-wa pedal. Odds are their faces will show a mixture of confusion, awe, and a struggle with the urge to dance. Give it a shot, see what you think!

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars of fun ........2007-03-11

for something off the beaten track, here's an extremely fun cd of music composed between 1971 and 1980 for various projects, including: some rejected tracks for a TV show in switzerland (1978), three tracks from an experimental film about an evening in the life of a striptease dancer (also 1978), an electronic work for a trade exhibition in basle (1971), theme music for a successful swiss tv quiz show (1972), music for a PR-disc made for an iron-foundry company (1972), more PR music for a company called "lansing-bagnall" (1971), and finally, music from a documentary film about an art exhibition in zurich (1980). lots of synths, keyboards, and electronics throughout. and it is all fun stuff. highly recommended for those who like something different.

5 out of 5 stars For once, the hype was worth it........2007-01-19

I'm trying to be a more educated and wary rare-groove connoisseur. I can recall being burned time and again by reissues that promise you Thomas's but can't even make toast when the smoke clears. So, even though I've come to trust Andy Votel's recommendations a lot more over the past year, I was a little uncertain when I looked over the albums he's putting his weight behind on the Finders Keepers label--namely, this one.

But, ya know something? This would have to rank as my first favorite discovery of 2007--the hype turned out to be worth it. "L' Enfant Assassin des Mouches" is just as twisted, graceful and psychedelic as the liner notes and tons of hipster critics say it is--it most definitely qualifies as the "psychedelic symphony" it claims to be on the cover.

If you need an idea of what to expect, loosen yourself up with some music in a similar vein--music like Aphrodite's Child's "666," the "Fantastic Planet" soundtrack and (of course) Serge's "Melody Nelson." If you can get down with those three albums, this one'll take you on yet another tour through those same trippy landscapes. Votel's picked another gem...check it out.

    5 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing.......2006-11-02

This is not an easy album to review. I don't agree that this is a difficult album. This is an amazing album. I love Melody Nelson, but i don't think there are any similarities, these are totally different albums, don't compare them. If you want something nice that creates an atmosphere to play in the back round don't get this. When you listen to this be ready to be torn out of your present reality and plunged into something you've never experienced. L' Enfant Assasin des Mouches, plays like a genius concept album. Buy this buy this buy this, holy crap buy this. Way ahead of its time. Buy it!

    3 out of 5 stars Difficult.......2006-05-15

Just a warning to listeners coming to this album because of Vannier's association with Gainsbourg (which is probably most people). The music on this doesn't resemble the music on Histoire de Melody Nelson in the slightest, save for some of the choral arrangements. There's none of the funky spaciousness that characterises Gainsbourg's classic album and it's also entirely instrumental which means that it comes off almost as some kind of film score.....from a very bizarre, avant-garde film.

What I'm trying to say is that this album is a pretty difficult listen and offers few rewards for the casual listener. Make sure you listen to some of it before you make the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Discover more Vannier.......2005-05-17

If you thought Melody Nelson was too short at a sublime 28 minutes, here is the remedy. Not in the Melody Nelson league, so 4 stars, but a sweeping mind-expander of a 1972 album. Funky, soulful, unself-conscious soundscapes. Yeah baby.

not all that. decent frenetic overly bongo'd beats with a slight bossa vibe - the melodies are subtly asiatic. i like the monkey cover but i prefer selda and that turk psyche comp over this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Funky Monkey Magic.......2007-01-23

This is a stunning album filled with tight grooves and funky beats. Clocking in at 30 minutes, none of the tracks over stay their welcome. The style of music is not a million miles away from 70's library music but is of a much higher standard. It's hard to believe that this was recorded over 30 years ago. I'm not sure if this was copied direct from the master tapes, however the sound quality is excellent.

Highly recommend, and much kudos to B-music for unearthing and releasing this lost gem. Also, the cover is very cool.

        Album Description

Having delved into the murky history of folk music to produce the excellent Folk Is Not A Four Letter Word compilation, Andy Votel here does the same for Welsh-language music originally released on the pioneering Sain label in the 1970s, with assistance from Dom Thomas and Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys. Most of Welsh Rare Beat's 25 songs seem to be about druids, ancient kings or characters from the Mabinogi myths, performed by a motley assortment radical folksters, musical virtuosos and visionaries - although much of that detail would be lost on non-Welsh speakers, were it not for some lovingly annotated liner notes featuring anecdotes from the scene plus a historical overview of Welsh pop by Rhys. Particular highlights comes from Y Tebot Piws' surreal beats on 'Mae Rhywyn Wedi Dwyn Fy Nhrwyn', and Heather Jones' 'Penhryn Gwyn'. Welsh Rare Beat is also notable for the inclusion of the Hendrix-inspired 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau', performed by acclaimed guitarist Tich Gwilym who sadly died in a house fire in Cardiff in June. Finders Keepers. 2005.

4 out of 5 stars Best of early Sain: Welsh-language indie pioneer label.......2006-02-09

This enjoyably eclectic and eccentric compilation of artists on the late 60s-70s indie Sain ("Sound") Welsh-language label makes a strong statement for the cultural nationalism that that era's agitation fomented. It reminds me of the Hungarian music from the same decades, when artists inspired by English-language rock and pop and folk decided to make their own assertive messages in the same idiom, but colored by their own traditions and in their native languages. Track 2 here, for example, sounds to me exactly like the Irish band Horslips, who similarly energized folk music for younger listeners with an infusion of harder rock. Compared to the British "acid folk" artists concurrent, the Welsh musicians tend to feature a grittier, tenser, and denser sound, even on the female-dominated vocal tracks here.

As the excellent liner notes by Gruff Rhys (SFA) explain, this meant no male choirs or winsome lasses with harps--although Heather Jones' couple of eloquent cuts do show this influence, if tastefully! He calls this music a blend of psych, blues, rock, pop, and proto-punk. The last of these genres can be best sampled from tracks 20 + 23, which sound as if the Super Furry Animals could've played them for the first time last week. Track 19 shows the more experimental side of the music; the latter half of the album tends to find the music opening up and stretching out into more innovative takes on then-current sounds. By comparison, the first half sounds more of its time, and the tracks often start out very strongly, but, as if constrained by the 3-minute-pop song rule, tend to suddenly fade out just when you wish they'd start to expand and take the song another couple of minutes! Certainly this feeling's rare for a listener to most such compilations of previously unheard music. I can see why Rhys favors best the Meic Stephens track 10--it's a clever and lively tune that shows why that artist's considered a peer of Dylan--Bob more than Thomas, perhaps.

The packaging deserves special mention. There's even a map of Wales which imitates the cut-and-paste graphics and period typography in showing the relevance of such movements as the Welsh Language Society and the Abergawn martyrs and the social unrest that led to the political as well as cultural demands for recognition of Cymric nationhood and autonomy--reminders that music does not always have to be explicitly topical to cause change in the wider society. The effect as a whole is not so much sounds you've never before heard, but the artists and label's right to simply convey the music they wanted to play in the language they wanted to sing.

        Album Description

Previously unreleased Psychedelic Folk album from 1970 by Susan Christie, a Philly based sophomore folk singer who had one novelty hit for a major label in the late '60s. This album, which featured her psychedelic take on Country standards and hand crafted tales of inner-city solitude backed by a Folk-Funk rhythm section, was not considered commercially viable and shelved...until now! Uber-legend John Hill produced the album which features 8 tracks including a 12 minute 'drugsploitation' epic called 'Yesterday - Where's My Mind' featuring Susan flipping vocal styles between Janis Joplin and Margo Guryan. Finders Keepers. 2006.

I'm amazed that this album was released only now..in 2006. Yes it has that '70's psychodelic feel to the music but that is a good thing. Her voice creates this wonderful atmosphere folk/rock that lies somewhere between morrison and joplin. It makes me wonder what other great albums live.. waiting to be released.
