Customer Reviews:
Rich'n'Tasty Beats.......2002-05-01
Abstract/downtempo/electro/funk? Yum! The chunky beats of "Take Control" pull you in and this album has you in its groove all the way through "Hungry Ghost". The harmpity bass and greasy synth notes in "C Communicated" echo in your pelvis, but leave room for your mind to explore. This is more than just funked-out background music. In the right state of mind, Beats Du Jour can be a headtrip with some real soul.
Good downtempo.......2001-10-17
Riton is not very like most other Grand Central artists, and, for me, this is a good thing. I've enjoyed CDs by Aim and Only Child, but I'm really happy to see that the label executives are willing to branch out a little bit into serious downtempo.
Overall the production is very good, the beats are fairly diverse and fat, and each song comes at you with something new. It's organically influenced, unlike what one of the other reviewers said about this CD. It uses organic basslines, vocal samples, and keyboard textures. Think Telefuzz, Landslide, and Talvin Singh as influences. It's not hip-hop, it's downtempo.
I thought it was a great CD. Just my opinion.
ick.......2001-09-17
I loved everything Grand Central had ever released...until now. This is just not good. It's got no soul (not as in the music genre, but as in feeling, emotion, spirit etc.). Basically, it sounds like a computer put it together with no help whatsoever from mankind. A couple of decent tracks, but overall, a big disappointment.
