    Album Description

'Violince',the Dunda Chief Records debut CD of OPPERA,is a stunningingly intricate journey through a beautifully crafted musical landscape that includes many elements from classic rock, classical music, and a heavy dose of pure radio friendly pop tied together in a way that is extremely fresh and innovative.

Singing like an angry angel and looking better than ever is none other than former Columbia Recording Artist 'Martika'. Martika had several hits during the late 80's and early 90's, culminating in the Billboard Charts number one smash 'Toy Soldiers'. 'Violince's heart wrenching ballads and epic rock songs definitely showcase the former 'pop diva' in her full glory! Martika has lost none of her hauntingly pure talent that catapulted her into the spotlight and to the top of the charts. With an army of alt-rock bands goose stepping to the same beat, OPPERA has side-stepped the pitfalls of sounding like everyone else, and created a wonderfully detailed world of their own that you really must hear to believe.

1 out of 5 stars This is just plain awful........2006-02-14

Whoever said this was a masterpiece must be in the band. If I could give it 0 stars, I would. There is nothing innovative or artistic or even catchy about this. It contributes nothing to music.

2 out of 5 stars Roxette warmed over.......2006-01-28

There's no way around it: while I'm all for this shamelessly poppy sound and these splendid production values, Michael Mozart is Per Gessle without the melodic sense, and Martika is Marie Fredriksson without the range. If you like this one, I strongly encourage you to pick up Roxette's "Have a Nice Day."

    5 out of 5 stars OPPERA.......2006-01-24

Oppera is honestly one of the BEST most unique bands out there....and they're just as good on this CD as they are in concert (yes I HAVE seen them). This CD is awesome and if you should defininatly buy it!!!

1 out of 5 stars One struggles to choose their most compelling fault.......2005-08-13

Indeed, the only way this CD could be more irritating is if you had to watch the band play it live!

    1 out of 5 stars You're seriously joking........2005-06-02

I find it amazing...as once an admirer myself and I've known fans of this Martika woman for a long time now..that a peson who spent years trying to rebuild her career with this new "group" that consists of a one hit wonder and an industry nobody, now finds it necessary to at all costs remind people that EMINEM sampled her one-hit song and subsequently comments "I hope this song does for me what Eminem did for Dido". At first she supposedly wanted to deter people from pitting this "music" with her past..yet now it's all about her? The music is embarrasing for a 36 year old woman, with lyrics reminding us of early Debbie Gibson and the cheap production sounding like Karaoke versions of Ashlee Simpson songs. She was at a Borders in Chicago yesterday, and the ad and banner for this in-store read "Oppera Feat. Martika". So this is what it comes down to huh? What a joke, at least hold on to your dignity girl.

Once I was a hardcore fan, now a dissapointment. You should have remained in the dark Ms. Marrero. I woudl have remembered you fondly, dancing in my memory.

    5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at a tortured genius.......2002-08-21

Naxos continues to do a wonderful job with its "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, one of Chopin and then two more, Liszt and Beethoven. he latter are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, and a discography. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.

Now we have two more entries in this amazing series, again written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann: "Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky" (8.558036-39) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 5 min. and "Johann Sebastian Bach" (8.558051-54) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 34 minutes. (Please see my comments on the Bach set on its webpage.)

Was there ever a sadder composer than Tchaikovsky? Siepmann practically introduces us to the child in his cradle and covers his 53 or so years of torment over his music, his sexuality, his impossibly hopeless marriage his strange relationship with Mme von Meck, and above all his music.

To make the recording more vivid, the producers have assigned professional actors the roles of the composer himself (Malcolm Sinclair), the women in his life (Karen Archer and Teresa Gallagher) and the men (Stephen Thorne and David Timson). There are many music examples (drawn, of course, from Naxos recordings), some of them considerably longer than necessary. For example, the "Sugar Plum Fairy" is heard at length to represent all of the "Nutcracker" score when several shorter samplings would have served the purpose better. But this has been true for the entire series, and perhaps the producers will rethink this aspect.

    5 out of 5 stars A True Artist.......2006-11-26

I am continually reminded of how our most talented artists go relatively unknown in this age of "American Idol" and other lowest-common-denominator entertainment. Great artists rarely get much media exposure. I am confident that not one percent of our population has heard of Barbara Higbie, though she has been around for years. I only wish she had more recordings to choose from. I recently saw her in concert with two other Windam Hill artists, and she was clearly the star of the show. Her artistry on the piano borders on genius, yet even her complex compostions are accessible and easily evoke emotion. I will never forget her playful facial expressions as she played "Baby Buda". I just purchases this album, and it is as good as I could have hoped for. If you really like jazz and new age solo piano, this CD is a must for your collection. Thank you Barbara. I will enjoy this gift for years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2002-09-11

I bought this CD after going to a concert in a small venue where she opened for the Reel World Sting band. I instantly feel in love with her music and bought this CD before I left the concert(She even autographed it for me). If you like piano music this is a CD you must own. It is a good mixture of songs that varies in emotions. A few of my favorites is Asleep in You Arms, and Variations on a Happy Ending. I wish that she would come back to Kentucky so I can see her in concert again. :(

5 out of 5 stars Review of Variations on a Happy Ending.......2000-10-05

This is Barbara Higbie's first solo piano CD and it was well worth the wait!!! I find myself listening to the CD over and over... Great catchy tunes... A wonderful and inspiring instrumental CD to listen to... HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

      Album Description

Return to Mountain is a follow up to the CD Holy Mountain that was released at the millenium. It consists of a number of solo guitar musical sketches that were composed and recorded at the International Dai Bosatsu Zendo, a Zen monastery in the heart of the Catskills. Many of these pieces were recorded outdoors as well as a good deal of ambient sound from the Dai Bosatsu Zendo's grounds. Return to Mountain continues in the vein of meditative, healing music particularly suited to the guitar, interspersed with the sounds of the forest birds and zendo gongs and bells.

5 out of 5 stars A Class of its Own.......2003-08-18

I have had the privilege of seeing Marilyn Taylor live, and the sound of her voice on recording is every bit as expressive and entrancing as her face and acting in person.
One senses that Taylor's voice effortlessly negotiates Frazelle's music, which has the quality of folk music set in a classical genre. Taylor instinctively adopts the vernacular and inflection of the characters and makes a (refreshing) departure from traditional lines. As she said about these songs, "My voice sat down in this music. It kicked its shoes off and felt cold bare earth and said, `This is home.'" Taylor indeed brings this "classical" music home to the listener.
Taylor further shows her gifts for stylistic flexibility and interpretive nuance as she brings to life Vardell's and Ward's more traditional music. One can almost see the far off look in her eyes as she whispers love's memories. The strength in her mid-range makes her all the more qualified to communicate such tender poetry. A listener is wrapped around her finger as she sings these stories.

            5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Recording.......2003-08-06

RETURN: ART SONGS FROM NORTH CAROLINA is a splendid recording representing works by three well-respected composers long associated with the state of North Carolina and its musical heritage. Soprano, Marilyn Taylor, brings forth a renewing and highly musical interpretation to each work. Accompanied by first-rate pianist, Robert Brewer, Taylor sings with conviction, warmth, and sensitivity, placing herself and her voice in character for the work she is performing. This recording would serve as an excellent addition to any personal collection or music library.
