To stake his claim on adult hip-hop, Atlanta impresario Jermaine Dupri resurrected early '80s old-school favorites Whodini (best remembered from their 1984 hits "Friends" and "Freaks Come Out at Night"). On Six, Whodini's first album in five years, the writer/producer/record exec provided the aging trio with new songs (penned by Dupri and friends), a recording space (at Dupri's studio), and a record deal (with Dupri's So So Def imprint).

Elements of Whodini's antiquated (nostalgic to some) electro funk creep onto Six: the handclaps of "Let Me Get Some"; the heavy synth bass of "Still Want More"; the sing-song schoolyard rhymes and subtle melodies of "Runnin' Em." But for the most part, Whodini's return sounds every bit as new school as Dupri's pint-sized disciples, Kriss Kross. In fact, with appearances by R&B singers R. Kelly and Trey Lorenz, young rappers the Lost Boyz, and Dupri's irresistibly smooth hooks, Whodini members Ecstasy, Jalil, and Grandmaster Dee could be Six's most inconsequential ingredient (it's unclear whether turntable whiz Dee appears at all). And with all the cursing and flexing going on here, it's difficult to hear the old Whodini on Six at all. Perhaps it's a misguided attempt to sound "street"--or else a comment on how much more rappers get away with these days--but either way it's sad to see the old people stoop to impress the kids. --Roni Sarig

Three discs into her acclaimed solo career, it's a no-brainer that the Brazilian pop charms of Bebel Gilberto will conjure a slew of beach-inspired adjectives. "Refreshing," "wind-swept" and "sun-kissed" spring to mind. Momento continues Gilberto's trend of crafting sultry scenes of afternoon delight via tunes that both adhere to traditions and sound ultra-modern. But she also mixes things up a bit in the process. Gilberto's sensual delivery--featured here in English and in Portuguese--hovers in and around each song, more an extension of the rhythms than the showpiece. Make no mistake, though: Gilberto's vocal work is a thing of beauty. She again blends bossa nova, samba, pop and electronica flourishes, but no one genre overpowers any other. Liliting guitars give way to pulsing percussion and horns, which crash against loops and samples. Gilberto coos amid the catchy club flavor of "Bring Back the Love," and the moonlit "Close to You" recalls Sade. The daughter of Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto even tackles Cole Porter's "Night and Day," recasting it as a hushed moment of bossa loveliness. And the title track is a collage of sonic secrets and memories. Perfect for a patio brunch--or an evening under the stars. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Backdrop for Romance .......2007-08-01

Music can transport, intoxicate, induce dreams and inspire delicious fantasies, ripe for enacting. Bebel Gilberto achieves this and more with the release of her third effort, "Momento".

The sensual, slow burn of her vocals and rythym allow the listener to get carried away to another place, a place where time stands still, begging one to abandon all earthly cares in favor of romantic splendor. "Momento", the opening track and CD title, peaks into Gilberto's world, with a poetic recount of pieces of her personal puzzle. "Bring Back the Love" includes a hushed moan in the background, with a steady beat and almost chant like command....

"Close to You" is about as sensual as anything you are apt to hear these days. It absolutely implores the listener to drop the material concerns to beckon one's lover..... sexy and sensual indeed.

Gilbeto's take on the standard " Night and Day" breathes new life into a romantic classic. She whispers through the urgency of this song with an understated passion, leading one to believe that the object of affection will receive the boil over of her desire. Such delivery is what illustrates a mood, making for true "mood" music.

The remaining tunes are at turns festive, contemplative and always engaging. Give way to the temptation; Bebel Gilberto offers a sublime summer album that is guarenteed to satisfy.

5 out of 5 stars Bebel Gilberto does it again!.......2007-07-30

Along with Ceu she is one of my favorite Brazilian singers and have to say, bought this one more hoping for the best. After her previous releases I thought to myself "Well it cant get better than this" and while maybe I can't say she has improved this is still up there with the rest of her releases.

Soft vocals over an almost African rhythm that just blend together so well. Yeh this is quality lounge music, this is music for the summer, long lazy days having a drink with friends, just being alone after a hard day or a long drive.

Probably the only thing I dislike on this CD are when she sings in English. Give me that Portuguese any day!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Sounds.......2007-07-28

The music of Bebel Gilberto is capable of helping us feel happy and even curious. I grew particularly fond of the tunes Momento, Azul, Os Novos Yorkinos, and Cadê Você? for the energy, harmony, poetry, and of course, Gilberto's beautiful voice. Unlike the Girl from Ipenema, Joao Gilberto's 'insensitive' beauty, this album introduces us to a woman willing to share her life stories with the help of guitars, drums, and violins. Like that Girl, she remains unapproachable. We can only admire her from afar. This sad remoteness could be helped by learning the incredible Brazilian Portugese language, at least well enough to know whether she is talking about love, life, or the pursuit of happiness. I know she is not talking about love lost. Ah, that is what is unique about her music. It is always about adding to love, never losing it.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful............2007-07-22

This is a thoroughly joyous album. Joao's kid is, once again, in fine form. [Bebel is not Astrud's child]. This is pure sensory experience, sexual without being sexually explicit [after all, this is Latin jazz, not rap]. Happy intermixture of Portugese and English, and I think Bebel's English is pretty good.

Most of these tracks won't be familiar to an American audience, though Bebel does a fine job with Cole Porter's "Night And Day". Bebel is no Ella, but then Ella was not Bebel, either. We really don't need "familiar" with albums that are about feeling. There are several singers of this genre around currently; Bebel is certainly as good as the best. Grab this album for the joy of it.

4 out of 5 stars The Whole Exceeds the Sum of its Parts.......2007-07-20

When I first listened to this, my immediate impression was that this was a 3-star album, meaning I wasn't going to review it. But I have to admit, after having listened to it edge to edge a few times, that the c.d. has grown on me. It has an hypnotic effect. It is one whose whole exceeds the sum of its parts.

This is a Brazilian pop-jazz-bossa c.d. Bebel Gilberto, daughter of the immortal Joao and Astrud, sings with a very breathy tone--not as breathy as Gabriela Anders, but not as solid as Maria Rita or Flora Purim, either. The c.d. is heavy on acoustic guitar and percussion. She sings in English and Portuguese--and on some tracks, in both languages.

There is no one track that truly stands out. But after awhile, you notice the effective coloration of strings, the cello, the bass trombone, the alto flutes and the tenor sax. It all sneaks up on you quite subtly.

This is a perfect c.d. to download into your I-pod, and cool with on the beach while sunbathing, drinking wine coolers, and watching "the girls from Ipanema" as they pass by. RC

It's no surprise that Starbucks is behind Brazilian chanteuse CéU's self-titled debut disc. (A co-release with the ever-tasteful Six Degrees Records.) The slinky, soulful sounds would be right at home amid mocha frapuccinos and lattes with extra foam. But CéU is more than a mere coffee-club cutie. Her sexy, assured vocals infuse every song with a come-hither vibe, from the playful "Rainha" to the simmering "10 Contados." The disc also showcases a slightly funky, urban sensibility; and electronic flourishes amplify the modern feel. "Vinheta Dorival" segues from standard guitar licks into gentle percussion rhythms. And a cover of Bob Marley's "Concrete Jungle" is elegant and effortless. Though originally released overseas in 2005, CéU's captivating collection still rings with truth and vibrancy. A truly caffeinated experience. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Nice sound.......2007-07-29

I have been playing this CD on repeat since it arrived in the mail. Even though I don't speak Portuguese, I must say her CD is very nice. It ranges from soothing, to upbeat and back to mellow. My favorites so far are:

2. Lenda
4. Roda
5. Rainha
6. 10 contados

The amazon preview was all it took to sell me and I'm glad it worked.

5 out of 5 stars Bossa Nova Perfection.......2007-07-29

This CD is awesome. I love the mixture of music genre and styles. It is done with so much grace and intelligence and her singing ties it all together beautifully. This isn't the usual Bossa Nova that I listen to, it's very avant garde, and nothing like I've heard in any form of North American music. This CD has made me a lifelong fan!

5 out of 5 stars A great CD you have to buy........2007-07-14

This CD is just great. Laid back lazy vocals played over such a great beat this is one of the best CDs out there. Yeh this is the kind of thing you would listen to after a hard days work, in the car coming home from work, going to work, enjoying a coffe with friends, just about anywhere!

Make you want to learn Portuguese!

5 out of 5 stars Surprising Delight.............2007-07-09

After seeing this at Starbucks, I decided to get it. Pretty picture, if nothing else....well, the album is a pure joy. Great singing, great music...fine instrumental back-up...super recorded sound.

Yes, the girl is gorgeous, but so is her voice. [Her English is fairly good]. Given the popularity of Latin Jazz, and all she has going for her, CeU should, indeed, have a very bright future. Thank you, Starbucks....

So how does Chris Tomlin follow up his 2006 Artist and Male Vocalist of the Year Dove Awards? Easy... he goes out and releases his best work to date with See the Morning, a superb collection of worship-flavored tracks that demonstrate Tomlin continues refining his art. As with the previous Arriving, producer Ed Cash is firmly at the helm and masterfully blending Tomlin's smooth vocals and his band's chiming guitars and rock-steady rhythm. The extensive road work that Tomlin and his band have done certainly shows in how tight See the Morning sounds. In fact, tracks like "Glorious" and "Awesome Is the Lord Most High" may even lose a little luster compared with how they sound live on Passion: Everything Glorious. No matter, as this release is much more about songwriting than it is about energy. For Tomlin, verse and chorus have never flowed smoother and sweeter than on "Glory in the Highest" and "How Can I Keep from Singing?" and first single "Made to Worship." Tomlin also offers a nice cover of Brenton Brown's "Everlasting God," slightly slower than Lincoln Brewster's fiery version on Let the Praises Ring but equally rewarding. Further highlights include the atmospheric "Uncreated One" and a new and pleasing twist on the classic "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)." Start to finish, See the Morning is Tomlin's most complete release and a strong argument for calling him one of this generation's finest songwriters in the modern church. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars pure worship.......2007-06-30

How many times have you ever bought a cd where you could say every song was fantastic? When you put this on be ready to worship, because your spirit will be crying out to honor the Lord will all that is in you. I can listen to this cd over and over and over....I bet you will too.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-05-28

One of the best CD's I've purchased in a long time. I love listening to it...it's very inspiring and calming.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Worship Album.......2007-05-21

"See The Morning" is the first Chris Tomlin album that I've ever purchased. He gained my interest with the release of "Made To Worship" and "How Can I Keep From Singing." "How Can I Keep From Singing" opens this album with an almost doorbell-like chime, awakening the listener and drawing them into the rest of the album and preparing them for some wonderful worship tunes. "Made To Worship" will easily flow from your lips after just a couple of listenings. The next tune, "Let God Arise," is my personal favorite. It has a driving beat behind it that proclaims "our God reigns." The rest of the album is just as good, and I'd be fibbing if I told you that any one of the other songs doesn't deserve to be played on the radio. "Uncreated One," "Glorious" and "Let Your Mercy Rain" are just a few of the highlights from the rest of the album.

Tomlin and his band sound tight and blend together wonderfully. For those unfamiliar with his sound, I'd say that Tomlin is something of a cross between Steven Curtis Chapman's musical stylings and Wes King's softspoken vocals. If you enjoy either of these artists or light pop and rock in general, Tomlin should be right up your alley.

I highly recommend this album to anyone in need of a worship boost. This album will get you singing and praising in no time flat.

5 out of 5 stars Praise worthy of praise.......2007-05-15

I never heard of Chris Tomlin before hearing his version of Amazing Grace/My chains are gone...so buying this album was a taking a chance for me. What a gift to have found an album where EVERY song brings glory to God. Great music...great singing...scriptural lyrics...I think even Paul the Apostle would approve. The refrains will stay with you and keep you lifted up all day!

Album Description

Leaders make the indescribable visible. Isaiah's words, for instance, brought comfort to a defeated nation and transformed a people's imagination, empowering them to mount up with wings like eagles. Those words bear fruits today, capturing a post-modern visionary's heart, urging Chris Tomlin to call together God's people for life-renewing worship.

"I feel as though we're like this landing strip in the desert for our great, incredible God to arrive on; a way for Him to come into people's lives," Tomlin says of the album's metaphorical moniker inspired in part by Isaiah 40. Tomlin's third studio record and first in two years, Arriving demonstrates a Christian's glad surrender meeting God's welcoming arms.

Tomlin's undeniable energy is charismatic and contagious. Avoiding the trappings of public performance, Chris stands beside the people he serves, raising his voice to God with them so that they share God's presence together.

Credited with venerable church choruses such as "Forever," "We Fall Down," and "The Wonderful Cross," Tomlin is considered one of this era's top songwriters for the church with five songs in CCLI's Top 60 and four more in the service's Top 500. With millions singing his songs weekly, Chris is recognized as a pivotal voice of today's modern expression of Christian worship.

Arriving rocks with inspiring, guitar-driven pop melodies reflecting the roots traditions of Austin, Texas, where it was recorded and home to the church Tomlin co-founded, Austin Stone Community Church. The project's raw, straightforward lyrics are knotted tight with hooks as big and broad as the Lone Star state sky. Producer Ed Cash (Caedmon's Call, Kathy Mattea, Bebo Norman) brings his signature touch to the tracks, revealing that the talent pool is deeper than even the artist knew.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the Best Worship Album of All Time.......2007-06-07

If you look at the title of this review, you may think I'm joking. I'm not. Arriving might well be the best worship album ever made. The only albums that I can think of in this genre that even come close to this one are Illuminate, by The David Crowder Band, Beautiful News, by Matt Redman, Hiding Place, by Selah, and Not to Us, by Tomlin himself. Every song on this disk is amazing and has a powerful message to it. Not only that, but the mixing, producing, and sound quality of the album are excellent as well. Tomlin has become one of todays' best singer songwriters in my opinion, and what he has crafted here will and should go down in history. His love for The Lord is immediately evident on the first three tracks of the album, "Indescribable", "Holy is the Lord", and "How Great is Our God". These three tracks stand out and are easily accessable by anyone. They have become staple songs in my church's worship services. However, my personal favorites are "Mighty is the Power of the Cross", which just shows the beauty of Christ's sacrifice for us, and the best song "Unfailing Love" with Steven Curtis Chapman. This track just shows us how much He loves us and through his sacrifice is willing to do anything for us. Pure beauty. If you are a lover of God, and a lover of standout Worship music, don't miss Arriving, by Chris Tomlin.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourites.......2007-05-15

Chris Tomlin is a truly gifted musician. I really enjoy listening to his music and love singing at the top of my lungs. This is a great CD. You'll be very glad to have it in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars He has Arrived.......2007-05-07

I play this cd all the time in my car. On a road trip with a friend, she loved it so much that the week we got home, she bought her own.

5 out of 5 stars all things well.......2007-04-24

When people complain about the shallowness of all modern worship music, they haven't heard Chris Tomlin. The singer has mastered Christian doxology that achieves true praise - the adoration of God rather than the introspection of self while one worships - by wedding language impregnated with biblical vocabulary to singable melody.

The 'worship wars' among which such achievements take their place suggest that Tomlin's is no small accomplishment.

ARRIVING focuses on the Lord's glory and its saturation of a world often too dim to understand that it's been filled. But not all are sightless:

'But rising up all around
Is the anthem of the Lord's renown
Together we sing
Let everyone sing:
Holy is the Lord God Almighty
The earth is filled with his glory'

Even with his focus on the Lord, Tomlin is able to express life here below, lived in the company of this Intimate Stranger:

'You have my heart and I am yours forever
You are my strength, God of grace and power
With everything you hold in your hand
Still you make time for me, I can't understand
Praise you God of earth and sky
How beautiful is your unfailing love
And you never change, God,
You remain the Holy One
And my Unfailing Love'

This is brilliant song-writing, rooted deep in biblical faith, understated in the performance arts, contagious to those with a penchant for singing along. ARRIVING could be a university curriculum for the How To Write a Song that People Can Actually Sing major. May its graduates multiply.

5 out of 5 stars Arriving.......2007-02-24

Spanish Harlem Orchestra's United We Swing does more than just make you want to dance. The joyous collection will likely incite a full-scale house party, complete with flowy dresses, sparkly jewelry, and silky, unbuttoned shirts. The disc plays like an actual live performance, a tight mix of passion and precision. Bandleader Oscar Hernandez even introduces the entire outfit on the opening track. Horns blare, percussion pulses, and a voice of choruses guides several numbers. If nothing else, take a listen to the trio of "Sacala Bailar," "Ahora Si," and "Que Bonito," which comes midway through the disc, for an idea of SHO's sparkling seamlessness. "Danzon For My Father" is a touching instrumental tribute, and the bilingual "Late in the Evening-Tarde en la Noche" features an inspired guest spot by Paul Simon, who matches the group's swelling enthusiasm. Since their arrival in 2000, Spanish Harlem Orchestra (SHO) has established itself as a standard bearer of contemporary Latin music. Directed by world-renowned pianist, arranger, and producer Oscar Hernández, the thirteen-member all-star ensemble has reintroduced the classic sounds of New York City Salsa to music lovers worldwide. United We Swing, SHO's third album, is a stunning follow-up to their 2004 Grammy award-winning album Across 110th St., and their 2002 Grammy nominated debut, Un Gran Día En El Barrio.

On United We Swing, Spanish Harlem Orchestra continues in the same classic-meets-contemporary sound, but with refreshing originality. Nine of the songs are original compositions grounded in the unique identity the band has forged based on the musical legacy of El Barrio, a pulsating Eastside community in NYC located to the south of 125th St that gave rise to Boogaloo, Latin Soul, and Salsa.

With the release of her debut Tanto Tempo in 2000, the Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto and the late DJ Suba redefined the bossa nova sound. Her sophomore effort, produced by Marius de Vries, the soundmeister behind Madonna, Annie Lennox and Bjork, was recorded in Rio, Bahia, London and New York. Gilberto's cool contralto sings sweetly over synths, strings, percussion acoustic piano and horns. Daniel Jobim and Pedro Baby contributed compositions. Caetano Veloso's "Baby" features lyrics by Os Mutantes, and Carlinhos Brown's candomblé-cadenced, "Aganju" swings with a nod to Africa. Bebel's hushed vocals reveal the influences of her father, the legendary Joao Gilberto, and of her mother Miucha on the electro-bossa beats of "Winter." Ditto the ocean-breezed "O Caminho," with jazzy orchestrations and pianisms provided by Joao Donato. This disc aims for the ear rather than the hips, but don't be surprised if future remixes could flip that sonic script. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Great Brazilian Music.......2007-07-20

This is my second purchased CD of Bebel Gilberto. I like the Brazilian music and I love her voice. This is the kind of music anyone would like to listen any time. Bebel sang both in English and Portuguese. She has a nice clear and melodious voice.

5 out of 5 stars It ain't easy..................2007-06-28

......being the child of a legend, but Bebel Gilberto manages just fine. The daughter of Latin Jazz superstar Joao Gilberto has done quite well making her own fame. A parent's name can, sometimes, be a burden...though, sometimes, it can also provide a key to open the door. Still, once the door is open, the child has to rely on their own talent, not the parent's. Happily, Bebel has all the talent one could ever want.

This is a great, thoroughly enjoyable, upbeat album. No point in discussing individual tracks; you'll like them all. Beautiful girl, great music, you'll get hooked in a hurry. Promise.

By the way, no connection with Latin legend Astrud Gilberto; she's just Bebel's Dad's ex-wife.

5 out of 5 stars Famous First Daughter Sings Again.......2006-06-22

"Bebel Gilberto" is a worthy follow-up to "Tanto Tempo." "Tanto Tempo" had a more electric feel because of the production by the late genius Suba.

"Bebel Gilberto" is softer;yes,it's different, but doesn't make it worse.Only different.Joao Gilberto's famous daughter is doing quite well on her own terms.

Highlights-
1)Aganju-Very jazzy. No wonder it has its own single of remixes. It's quite danceable.
2)River Song-Very flowing.
3)Cada Beijo-Bebel is best when she sings in Portuguese.Portuguese is a musical language.
4)O Caminho-Another great Portuguese song.
5)Ceu Distante-Very good.
6)Jabuticaba-Bouncy&frothy.This was recently featured on Putumayo's World Music Hour.No wonder. It's catchy.

Bebel Gilberto does great again!I'm glad I got this.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly smooth, melodic, and soothing! .......2006-06-06

I was walking through Best Buy when I heard one of the songs from this CD playing on the store stereo system. I liked the sound so much that I stopped shopping just to listen, and then I made someone in the store track down the title of that artist and the album that the song was on! Because the song was not in English, it took a while, but it was worth it. I bought the CD immediately. I love her sound so much! If only I enjoyed all the CDs in my collection this much. I would recommend this CD to those who like the sounds of Norah Jones, Joss Stone, maybe even Buena Vista Social Club or other latin jazz artists. It's rhythmic, peaceful, and soulful all at once. Just beautiful.

It seems an easy task to put together a CD for a series about a funeral home...pick some songs about death and make people smirk on topic for a moment before they toss it into the soundtrack graveyard. But this is not a disc to be tossed away. Six Feet Under: Everything Ends is a collection of music that feels exactly like the series: a floaty-bordering-on-surreal batch of greatness. The disc starts off with an underrated track from Nina Simone, the sultry "Feeling Good." Fans of Coldplay and Radiohead will certainly be familiar with their previously-released tunes ("A Rush of Blood to the Head" and "Lucky" respectively) but the best element of this disc is that it gives lesser-known, musically-similar artists a push. After all, finding Death Cab For Cutie's "Transatlanticism" and Sia's fragile "Breathe Me" on pop radio is, well...let's stick to the theme and use the "snowball's chance in hell" analogy. There are a host of great, previously unreleased and exclusive tracks on this CD: Jem's Dido-esque "Amazing Life," the Caesars' "Don't Fear The Reaper" cover, Interpol's discordant and dark "Direction" and Arcade Fire's wonderful "Cold Wind"--a whispered, frail, and beautiful soundscape, perfect to watch hearses off drive into sunsets by. --Denise Sheppard

5 out of 5 stars Six Feet and feeling good.......2007-07-13

This eclectic compilation of haunting melodies not heard in saturated main stream rotation leave me smiling every time I listen to it. Refrains that recall key moments and images from the final season of 6 Feet Under is definitely a bonus, but the songs stand up well on their own. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack for a great show.......2007-05-11

I became addicted to the show because the ease of watching from NetFlix. The finale on the show was incredible, and the soundtrack matches an amazing series.

5 out of 5 stars Six Feet Under, Vol 2: Everything ends.......2007-04-11

The music was just what I was looking for, I am such a fan of the show & I love the music.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven Compilation.......2007-03-16

The standout tracks on this uneven collection are from the Greats Irma Thomas (the original "Time in on my Side", covered later by the Stones) and Nina Simone ("Feeling Good"), both recorded in the sixties.

Sia's "Breath Me", which provided the soundtrack to the dying minutes of the terminal episode of Six Feet Under, brings back memories of the show and still sounds good without the wonderful elegiac visuals. Everything else on the CD sounds tired. Alan Ball & Co. deserve a lot of credit for including songs on the show from unknown bands, but not many of these choices stand the test of time.

2 out of 5 stars If you like the music from Six Feet Under then you'll like this soundtrack.......2007-03-13

I purchased this soundtrack because my wife wanted the song on the soundtrack by Sia. Overall the soundtrack is ok, however knowing what I know now I could have gone to iTunes to buy the one song she wanted.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Her father may be the legendary Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto, but in 2000 daughter Bebel proved that she understands the bossa nova, too. There's a subtlety throughout this recording that makes Bebel's voice entrancing, as she re-creates the sensual essence of bossa nova before running with it into electronic territory toward the album's end. Tanto Tempo is an even-tempered statement that manages to showcase Bebel's own sexy voice while gracefully remembering the past. --Karen K. Hugg

Amazon.com

Daughter of the famed Brazilian pop and bossa nova singer João Gilberto, Bebel recalls her father's own classic recordings on Tanto Tempo, with a sure sense of pitch. Bebel Gilberto is hardly less charming for that, though, and the album entices with hushed passion. Relying mostly on acoustic instruments and some muted orchestrations, Tanto Tempo is nonetheless smartly paced to allow for some tasteful dance-club electronics to augment a few tracks, and ends on a celebratory note with "Close Your Eyes"--all but an invitation to Carnival. The current trend for things Brazilian should assure this disc a deservedly wide audience. Licensing it for the U.S. is another minor triumph for the fine San Francisco-based label Six Degrees. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough..............2007-07-23

.....of this fabulous singer. Right now, there are several beautiful Brazilian girls who make beautiful music, and Bebel heads the list. CeU is a comparitive [though fabulous] rookie, and the wonderful Ana Caram has the mixed fortune to record for a boutique label, whose product is hard to find.

This is an absolutely wonderful recording...seductive, alive, enchanting, addicting. The songs are Latin jazz, and won't be familiar to most American listeners, even the ones in English [Bebel's English is pretty good]. Who Cares...this record is about feelings that know no language.

Do not fail to grab this...one hearing, and you're hooked. Then, you'll want Bebel's other records; that's OK, because they're great, too. Go ahead, be seduced; you'll enjoy it. Promise.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Tanto Tempo By Bebel Gilberto.......2007-05-31

Fireworks!

Bebel is someone people are going to remember.

Kids young and old, adore her!

A joy.

I bought three of her other CD's through Amazon today.

Bebel has alot to give the World.

4 out of 5 stars Great and refreshing.......2007-05-10

GREAT, simply put.
A refreshing twist on bossa and Brazilian music. A perfect entree to Bebel if you have never purchased any of her CDs.

Beware, however, that if you buy this her others are a "tad" behind this gem. (not to say they are bad at all, just saying this CD set the bar very high).

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Twist on Bossa Nova.......2007-05-06

It's a mesmerizing album with Bossa Nova, pop and jazz mixed together! She's very different from her father's music...she has her own bossa nova style! I simply love this refreshing music and her languid, dreamy voice!

5 out of 5 stars Bask in Brazilian music.......2006-06-14

When this album first came out in 2000,I first saw it at Starbucks coffee shops. I dismissed it as snooze-inducing easy listening, perfect for the background of sipping an overpriced latte.

I was WRONG.

This is a beautiful album! It's impossible to choose highlights or a "Best Track" on this one, because it's PERFECT.Bebel Gilberto breathes new life into bossa nova with her singing.I look forward to listening to more of her music!

Album Description

With great success and momentum going before them, the David Crowder Band began the process of writing and recording their newest release, Illuminate. Having performed 251 concerts in 2002 (yet only missing 11 Sundays at University Baptist Church), Crowder says that the band was able to truly interact with its fans, consequently learning where the connections are: "We realized that, musically, their tastes were similar to ours. Just because a record is in a store doesn't mean they'll get it. Our music made sense to them. We were nervous about how the interaction would be. But, in between records, we kept getting reaffirmed that the fans really understood what we were about...that what we do is useful and significant in other people's lives. It helped us relax. It made us want to make music."

David Crowder has never been a disciplined, let's-sit-down-and-write-now kind of songwriter. "Songs come in spurts," he explains. "I am an inspirational writer. The moment will hit and I know I better find a pen and paper. There is a lot of intentionality behind my songwriting." And so it happened with the songs of Illuminate. Back in Waco, a writing spurt began as Crowder was having conversations at church about the relationships between the physics of light and Scripture. "It was definitely a 'head to heart' kind of experience when the songs came out," he says. Who knew that science would inspire worship?

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Masterpiece.......2007-06-05

I may not be the first to mention this, but this album greatly strengthened my relationship with Jesus Christ. I've always been a strong believer, but this music just takes me to new heights in my spiritual journey. Just when I thought "Illuminate" was as good as it gets, Crowder produces "A Collison" and captivates me once again.

"Wholly Yours" is just about the most profound song that I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Even the interludes have deep meanings to bridge the gap and complete the album.

The album is a true, meaningful journey of worship and praise. It is an experience that you won't be able to discover anywhere else. DCB has changed me individually and I'm so much better for it. Believe me, you will never want to take this one out of your CD player!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-04-12

Every cut on this CD is wonderful. There is a great variation of tempo throughout the album. I especially like Here is our King. Be more Quiet is simply haunting. Usually I don't enjoy bluegrass but I really thought I saw the Light hit just the right note

5 out of 5 stars Why I listen to it over and over.......2007-01-28

If you've seen David Crowder in concert, you will want to buy this CD. David can get 'out there' with his techno sound, but this is not like that - it's 'real' sounding. David Crowder has an awesome voice and his lyrics are pure worship, if not directly from the Bible itself. You'll find yourself singing along. The only fault I noted was 'odd' breaks between some of the songs, but it's only distracting the first time you listen to it. There's really no cut on this CD that I don't like.

5 out of 5 stars Unique!.......2007-01-10

David Crowder strikes me as someone who would be fun to know: he seems smart, committed to Christ, and creative in the extreme. This album is fun to listen to, and is definitely unique!

5 out of 5 stars I Wish it Went to 10 Stars!.......2007-01-10

This album is WOW! thats all there is to say...it so great and so sincere. You can really connect to the cd. You should definitely consider buying Illuminate too! Its even better!

There is always something a bit macabre in creating a collaboration with a musician who has been dead for a decade. This kind of thing is nothing new, of course. The dead are sampled daily--from Nina Simone to Elvis Presley and, most recently, Billie Holiday. But this kind of reconstructive homage reeks of easy opportunism. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the Ravi Shankar, Jimi Hendrix, and John Coltrane of Qawwali singing, the sacred and ancient vocal style popularized in Pakistan and brought to the world by Nusrat in the 1990s. Nusrat himself wasn't averse to cross-cultural collaboration, having cut three albums with producer Michael Brook--two of them expansive, impressionistic world-fusion works. But Nusrat was sensitive to how his music was employed, even chastising Brook on their first album, Mustt Musstt, when Brook resequenced the singer's vocal tracks for musical, but not necessarily literal, effect. They worked out their differences on the masterful Night Song. But Nusrat had no input on these tracks, which he reportedly cut between 1968 and 1974, very early in his career. Dub-electronica artist Gaudi takes the Pakistani's vocals and adds his own reggae and dub backing tracks to them. While Nusrat could send you into a trance state with his upwardly spiraling, almost heavy-metal grooves, Gaudi takes a lighter approach, turning the Qawwali hymns into reggae toasting that subverts much of the original intent. From the lyrical pop drift of "Kahin Mot Se Bhi Na Jao" to the vaguely hypnotic "Dil Da Rog Muka Ja Mahi," with its sampled sequence from Kraftwerk's "The Model," Gaudi chooses the attractive surface over the deeper journey that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan conjured almost every time he sang. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars works well (if you like reggae).......2007-08-03

The Amazon official reviewer makes some good points. Also note that the instrumentation and rhythmic feel is nothing like qawwali music - it's mostly reggae-type grooves. But if I think about it in terms of a musical hybrid - not expecting qawwali music, and not expecting 'heights of ecstasy' from the religious lyrics... then I like it. And I don't even listen to much reggae! :-) The vocals are quite nice, and I'm impressed with how 'natural' they sound combined with reggae/electronica musics added decades later. If you want actual qawwali - or even the kind of 'worldbeat qawwali' Nusrat did with Brook - don't get this. But if you're even slightly a reggae fan, these are pretty interesting vocal lines on top.

Here's a lengthy review from the site calabashmusic (which also has soundclips and downloads) which gives a different spin than the Amazon reviewer:

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was and is still very much considered to be one of the greatest Qawwals (singer of qawwali music) in the world; not only recognised as a legend in his native Pakistan he also took his musical messages of peace, love and spirituality to the international stage, earning him the title of Pakistan's premier ambassador of Qawwali music. In the west, audiences were introduced to the power of Nusrat's music through collaborations with Eddie Vedder and Tim Robbins on the soundtrack for `Dead Man Walking' and with Peter Gabriel in `Passion: Music for The Last Temptation of Christ'. Dubbed by many as the `Elvis of the East' and the `Bob Marley of Pakistan' these titles are not without foundation; he has sold more albums than Elvis and reached as many hearts and souls and crossed as many cultural and spiritual boarders as Bob Marley with his unique mix of poetic eastern spiritual and western musical themes. This inspiring tribute to a legend of our time has been created by highly regarded London based producer and composer Gaudi, himself no stranger to crossing boundaries and forging links using the music of the world. Included in his impressive discography is the soundtrack for Hanif Kureishi's hit stage-play "My Beautiful Laundrette" - a soundtrack richly woven with the cultural traditions of Pakistani music. His Interchill's bestselling 2004 release "Bass, Sweat & Tears" (Interchill Records), skilfully unites many ancient and culturally diverse musical styles with `gaudi-style' beats and bass in an inspiring musical exploration of our planet; which, alongside his remixes of other legends such as Bob Marley all add up to confirm Gaudi's skill as a producer and his credentials as musical diplomat Using recently discovered and rare vocal parts, recorded during sessions in Pakistan in the late 60's & early 70's, Gaudi has sensitively created a set of completely new tracks, crafted around Nusrat's uniquely beautiful melodies and universal themes of spirituality, peace and love. The overall essence of the album blends elements of Reggae - the international music of peace and love - with dub, electronica and traditional instrumentation and modern production techniques creating a sound that is in turns, up-lifting, haunting, moving and warming. The task of creating a work that will carry the voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to new audiences around the world as well as his huge existing fan base, has been achieved without a doubt in this timeless collection of songs.
