A different kind of sound.......2005-04-22

I saw IsWhat?! open for Saul Williams in DC, and they are really unique. It seems, at first, a strange combination to have bass, beatboxing, and sax on the same stage but their sound is amazingly rich. A highly recommended CD, and you shouldn't miss them live if you have the chance, they have a great dynamic on stage. If you're into jazz and/or underground hip-hop, this is a great find.

With their latest CD, It's a Long and Lonely Time Until the Train Will Bring You Home, Josh Lederman y Los Diablos elevate themselves from mere Sheik to King of all that is Irish and Jewish, Folk and Punk.

From the thundering opening track, "Four in the Morning (or, Lovestreams)," with it's pounding tom toms and imagery reminiscent of Bugs Bunny on his watery descent into the layer of a mad scientist, to the closing country waltz, "It's a Long Walk Home, Darling," Los Diablos cover a vast range of moods while managing to keep their unique personality intact the only way they know how-through irony, melody, and lots of accordion.

Add to that Mandolin, Banjo, Fiddle and Rhythm Section, layered beneath Lederman's playful melodies and sorrowful lyrics, and It's a Long and Lonely Time... cruises by like the dirtiest joke you've ever heard without the punchline.

Album Description

This is an instrumental album of original tunes. This is a project that began in 2000. We started out planning an "all acoustic world music type of thing" and it evolved over time into this showcase featuring the composing talents and musicianship of my pals here in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The BONUS TRACK, "The Shaw Shuffle" was an impromptu jam that emerged at the end of a grueling session and illustrates the fun we can have when we let loose. All songs were recorded and mixed "on the fly", the old-fashioned way, without the use of computer-aided editing or automation.

Beautiful free flowing..........2002-05-30

In the pastoral setting of Niagara-on-the-Lake, it is sometimes difficult to imagine any sort of culture that doesn't jive with the tourist town's corporate vision of a charming and historical destination. Steve Goldberger's subversive project is a collection of music that showcases the talents of many of the fringe musicians in NOTL. The sounds on the disc are beautiful free flowing instrumental illustrations of life in tourist heaven and they were all recorded and mixed on the fly, the old fashioned way.
A sort of mash up of folk, soft rock and jazz combined in the asthetic of a jam band, is a good way to describe most of the music on the album. But for a more accurate description, get your hands on this disc and wrap your head around the sounds.
