This 4-CD set marks the 45th anniversary of Impulse Records and also serves as audio accompaniment to Ashley Kahn's book, The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records. John Coltrane was the first major artist to sign with ABC-Paramount's fledgling subsidiary in 1961 and it was an inspired choice, his rising prominence and adventurous spirit immediately identifying Impulse with a dynamic shift in jazz. With its gatefold album covers and black and orange graphics, Impulse also added some visual panache to the revolution. While Coltrane--represented here by tracks such as "Greensleeves," "Impressions" and a segment from his signature A Love Supreme--was clearly the label's inspiration, Bob Thiele was one of the great jazz record producers, bent on documenting the best veteran musicians as well as the avant-garde. You hear it in superb tracks here from Earl Hines, Count Basie and Coleman Hawkins, as well as stellar performances by major figures of modern jazz like Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins and Charles Mingus. There are also plenty of appearances by Coltrane's associates, like McCoy Tyner and Alice Coltrane, as well as the revolutionaries that Coltrane and Thiele nurtured, among them Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders. It all contributes to a survey of what was most vital in jazz in the 1960s and early '70s that no other single label could manage. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Scottanthony.......2007-02-10
I have been listening/collecting Impulse albums for almost 25 years. It is very nice to see such a collection that was clearly put together with quite a bit of care and interest. Sounds wonderful and the song selection is superb. My only minor quibble is that it would have been nice to have one more CD devoted to more of the later releases especially with artists from the label that are not represented (i.e. Sam Rivers, Ornette Coleman and a little more from some others (Johnny Hartman, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp). Very nice job - and the Ashley Kahn book makes this a wonderful weekend getaway
A Revelatory Collection - ****1/2.......2006-08-04
Impulse Records rode point in the progressive jazz movement of the 1960's and early 1970's, the end of what is considered jazz's last "Golden Age". In the sixteen years of its existence as a subsidiary of ABC Records, Impulse brought together many jazz legends and young upstarts, from Earl "Fatha" Hines and Count Basie to Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane. And of course there was their standard-bearer, John Coltrane, who enjoyed his last and most creatively productive years there, offering among others, his masterpiece, "A Love Supreme". This four-disc set presents the wealth of artists and styles that worked under the prestigious orange-and-black umbrella of Impulse: names like Gil Evans, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Freddie Hubbard, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp, McCoy Tyner, Gato Barbieri, Ahmad Jamal, and many others. It's all in here, the cool, the post-bop, the avant-garde, and the chronological progression is fascinating, as the music moves from a more traditional to a more radical voice, echoing the tumult of the 1960's. (Case in point: the middle section of Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has a Master Plan" - music doesn't get more "out there" than this.) Impulse had the reputation as a haven for the young, black, "angry" tenor sax player, and while several of their artists may have fit that profile, there was really much more variety to the music. Other influences were evident, like Eastern mysticism, (Pharoah Sanders with Leon Thomas, and Alice Coltrane), and the growing cross-pollination of rock and soul/funk (Gabor Szabo, Keith Jarrett) reflecting jazz's next major direction, "fusion". There are some familiar pieces here, especially those from John Coltrane, but much of it is revelatory, especially to the casual jazz fan like me. The packaging for this box set is nothing spectacular (though it is reminiscent of the glossy "gatefold" covers of the original LPs), but that apparently helps keep the price reasonable for a four-disc collection of over four hours of classic jazz. It's a rich and rewarding musical journey.
(Note: If you are curious but don't wish to invest in the whole set, there is also a budget-priced one-disc sampler available. Also released, concurrent with this set, is a series of single-disc compilations of artists such as John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane, Charles Mingus, McCoy Tyner, and others. I've purchased the Keith Jarrett collection and highly recommend it.)
Problems.......2006-08-01
The CD#2 is wrong. There is a manufacturing defect. CD#2 is the same than CD#1. Should be replaced. I live abroad.
How can be solved?
A very nice but limited overview.......2006-06-15
If nothing else, this four cd set gives a nice overview of the Impluse jazz label and shows the impact it had on modern jazz. What's really revealing is the diversity of music that was recorded. It wasn't just screaming atonal tenor saxophones; there was Ben Webster, Count Basie, Earl Hines as well as hard bop illuminaries such as Art Blakey, Roy Haynes and others. In short there was a lot of musical styles to be had, and this might surprise some who always thought of Impulse as just Trane or Pharoah Sanders.
The shortcoming of this set however is the time limitations that four cd's offer. There is no way to get as much music on here as the label truly deserves. So you're stuck with the personal choices of Ashley Kahn who compiled this set and who also wrote the book about the label. Mostly I can't quibble with the choices, but how Sam Rivers fails to show up here is beyond my comprehension. Yet, the thirty three minute "The Creator Has A Master Plan" by Pharoah Sanders IS here as is "Gypsy Queen" by the late great guitarist Gabor Szabo......so all is not lost.
The packaging is nice enough, the mastering is impeccable and the price for such great music is right. I just wish there were a couple of more cd's in this collection. A label such as Impulse deserves the super deluxe treatment.

Customer Reviews:
An AntiWar Masterpiece.......2002-08-26
Tippett and Britten were composers who, though very different in temperment and style, had many interests in common. One of the overiding concerns with both composers was the moral response to war and it's horrors. For Britten, the War Requiem and Owen Wingrave are his very clear moral response to war. Tippet, in his fashion is much more psychological in this work, which must rank as one of Tippett's best and most powerful operatic statements.
King Priam is a dramatic tour de force. Based on the Illiad as seen through the eyes of the Trojans, the work is a meditation on the inevitability of fate in mass movements like war. Priam, though illdisposed to the war, is unable to stop or control it as it takes both of his sons, his kingdom and then finally his own life. He emerges as a figure of moral power and grandeur, but ultimately as impotent and tragic. This libretto is one of Tippett's best and most clear statements.
Musically, Priam is a powerhouse, inaugurating Tippett's second major style. Priam is constructed in a mosaic style. Small chamber groups of instruments with defined musical content are assigned to characters. As the work develops, these small groups combine and recombine in a shifting maze of patterns that seems to endlessly reinvent itself. The music starts out as largely tonal, but the tonality breaks down as Fate takes over and dooms the Trojans. The work is never serial, but it takes an almost Bergian view of tonality, sometimes more and sometimes less tonal as the dramatic situation warrants. The vocal lines are mostly declaimed, but with moments of lyricism that are unfogettable, such as Priam's first aria, A Father and a King, or the beautiful scene between Priam and Achilles in the third act. And Achilles war cry at the end of act two is bone chilling!
This is a great performance of this piece. Many of the singers originated the roles and sing them with power and authority. Phillip Langridge is terrific as Paris. Robert Tear is a marvelous Achilles. David Aetherton conducts this difficult score with precision and a fine ear for balances.
This is a profound opera by a major 20th century composer. If you like Britten, you should own this as well. It is increasingly looking like Tippett's masterpiece.
Visceral power & beauty coupled with stunning performances!!.......2001-06-13
I bought this on a whim, having heard only the slightest bit of Tippett's orchestral music and none of his operas. I expected the music to be "difficult," and the performances stilted, but I was oh so wrong! Yes, this is definitely late 20th century music -- often dissonant and atonal, but it is utterly beautiful, emotionally moving music. I'm a huge fan of Britten's operas, and judge all modern opera composers by his standards, and (pardon my gushing) Sir Michael is more than up to the challenge. First of all, he takes on the daunting task of adapting the Iliad into a opera libretto and manages to compress the drama beautifully into 3 acts that tell the story imaginatively, comprehensively and in a wholly theatrical manner. Second, he uses the music to heighten the sense of character by giving each persona a unique style of vocal line and orchestration (yes, this is what all composers do, or try to do, but Tippett succeeds in a way few others do). Several of the characters are accompanied by solo instruments (bravura parts of concerto-like difficulty performed brilliantly) -- Achilles by solo guitar, Helen by solo cello, King Priam by violin, etc. Three characters form a sort of Greek chorus who comment on the action and bring a sense of questioning morality to the whole.
All of the solo singers are astutely cast and sing with amazing power. Standouts (difficult to single out any of them, they're all so brilliant): Phillip Langridge is first-rate as Paris, Priam's second son -- he sings with enormous power and pathos at the same time. Felicity Palmer is velvety sex personified as Helen. Norman Bailey as Priam has a raw edginess to his sound, which lends such a sense of reality to a man pushed to the edge by fate and his warring sons. The London Philharmonia gives a virtuoso performance, led sensitively and intelligently by David Atherton. The digital sound is crystal clear and beautifully engineered: the sound couldn't be better live at the Met! Take a chance on this one, and enter into an operatic world you will never forget.
One of the best and most easily grasped of modern operas.......1999-02-27
Contemporary opera was never the same after King Priam, a suitable irony given that the Opera is perhaps the most easily grasped by the listening public of the 5 Tippett Operas. Even so, the "crisis of King Prian" stylistically and emotionally is the germ-seed for the eccentrism yet to come in "The Knot Garden", "The Ice Break", and "New Year". Tippett's theme is the futility of choice and the nature of the impact of choice on humanity in the micro-sphere of the individual and the macro-sphere of the community and history. Tippett's unusual yet perfectly conceived recasting of the Iliad from the Trojan persepctive does more than summarize plot, but pauses to comment on the universal human potential implicit therein. A must-buy for Tippett fans and for anyone who likes opera, Greek Mythology, classical music, or a good story.

Musical hybrids are always a dicey venture, running the risk of the whole's being less than the sum of the parts. Discussing the incorporation of jazz in classical music (or vice versa) can involve a quagmire of definitions. Instead, it is best to judge the works individually on their musical merits. All those represented here succeed to a greater or lesser degree. This disc opens with Gershwin's Manhattan anthem, Rhapsody in Blue, among the first to mix the two genres and yet to be bettered for seamlessness. Conductor Bernstein's love and understanding of the jazz idiom imbues works by Milhaud (La Création du monde) and Copland ("Burlesque" from Music for the Theatre [sic]) with the requisite swing to make their jazz influences ring true. But it is composer Bernstein (Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs for Solo Clarinet and Jazz Ensemble, West Side Story) who blends the two genres into a brew that is less noble experiment and more ecstatic experience. Recommended. --Michael Ross
Customer Reviews:
Classical-jazz fusion was never more alive than on this CD.......2006-06-03
This NPR compilation from Sony brings together some of Bernstein's jazziest recordings during his heyday with the NY Phil., including the best of his three versions of Milhaud's "Le Creation du Monde." LB was attached to this piece, but his late- Seventies reading on EMI has hardening of the arteries and his 1945 debut recording predates LP. Milhaud created a minor masterpiece of jazzy classicism in this work, and LB gives us a swinging take.
His own Prelude, Fugue, and Riff is just as good a piece, and here there's no hesitaiton in saying that Bernstein's reading, featuring the NY Phil's legendary first clarinetist Stanley Drucker, is definitive, as is his recording of Music for the Theater by his mentor, Aaron Copland. When I was a kid in the Fifties, all these pieces still had a lot of juice, and although the landscape has changed, for me they still do. The immortal chestnut on this CD is, of course, Rhapsody in Blue, tossed off by Tilson Thomas in the original jazz band orchestration and done faster than we generally hear the piece, thanks to the gimmick of having the ocmposer himself dubbed in as the soloist. It's a gimmich but fun for a listen or two. Gershwin rips through the Rhapsody in 13 min. flat--about 5 min. faster than normal--and MTT is hard-pressed to adjust to the composer's many sudden tempo changes.
Almost perfect.......2000-06-23
This is really a very interesting disc. The selection of classical works with a jazz influence puts some great recordings on this disc, especially the jazzier and faster than normal recording of Rhapsody in Blue. While the disc is interesting, I don't thik it's one of those discs one can just listen to - some of the peices don't seem to lend themselves to that. Still, the liner notes are great, and the selection is really quite good.
This may be my favorite recording of Rhapsody in Blue ever!

Customer Reviews:
The CD cover is worth a chuckle..........2006-01-28
I bought this for $1 in Downtown Manhattan (not that location's all that important, I just felt like typing Manhattan-- oh, there I go again!) just because the cover looks so hokey and 3rd-party... I just had to get it! Not surprisingly, several of the tracks on here sound synthesized, as if someone performed a whole orchestra on an electronic piano. But, I need to give it credit-- for the most part, MOST of the tracks are actually played by a symphonic orchestra. There's even a literal *LIVE* track thrown in somewhere near the end of the album, complete with a real clapping audience! (I haven't listened to it in a while, but seeing this album actually get reviews pushed me to write one myself!)
So, yes. The album pretty much sounds as it looks. It's an identity-confused mix of synthesized, studio-recorded, and live tracks. But if you can get it at a clearance store for $1, that's worth it... just for the fake "Jurassic Park" logo & dinosaur on the cover!!!
All the great movie themes compiled into one.......2001-09-18
Think for a moment about the most memorable music that you have heard in your lifetime. Is Jurrasic Park on the list? How about Indiana Jones? Star wars? Whatever you chose, its probably on this CD. Some of the most famous music in movie history is on this CD. John Williams dominates over 70% of the CD but it dosent really matter. All of the music here is really memorable and fun to listen to (Especially the Indiana Jones theme) Basically, if you want to listen to your favorite movie themes and dont want to switch CD's 10 times to listen to them, get this CD.
The Good: Lots of majestic music
The bad: None
And the Ugly: "Close Encounters of the Third kind" is worthless, dosent belong on this CD.
AWSOME!.......2000-06-27
This CD has many of the important aspects that the origonla soundtrack forgot to add! it is unique as well as enjoying to listen to!
