Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Eddy Duchin Music!.......2007-06-22
Although I own five Eddy Duchin CDs, this is the one I return to the most often. The selection, placement and quality of the music is superb. The clarity and richness of the remastering by Diamond Cut is remarkable, as one discovers while listening to "You Took my Breath Away", "Night and Day", "It's De-Lovely", and "Take My Heart", just a few of the wonderful 1930s songs in this album. In addition, every singer is perfectly matched to each song. If you enjoy music of this era, you also will not want to miss "Got A Date With An Angel" by Hal Kemp and "La Cumparsita" by Francisco Canaro (Asv Living Era). This timeless and uplifting music is excellent for listening and dancing. I highly recommend this CD, another brilliant gem to add to your collection!
Not "hot," but very good dance music.......2003-04-27
Leader of one of the most well known society orchestras during a period better known for swing, Eddie Duchin catered to those who were financially well off and for whom "hot" was looked down upon as the music for the lower classes. That he was popular is evident by the vast recorded output from which Diamond Cut has reissued 21 fox trots and two recordings in the Latin mode - "Dust on the Moon" (rumba) and "Caminito" (tango) - from the mid-1930s. "How Do I Rate With You," with a growling trumpet, is about as close to "hot" as Duchin's band gets on this CD. Don't let that discourage you from investigating this recording; it's very good dance music and there's plenty of Duchin's piano featured. Most of the original source material appears to have been excellent or adequate, however, slightly worn originals must have been used for a couple tracks. Nevertheless, it shouldn't take away from the enjoyment of the music which includes many well known standards and some very nice songs which have, unfortunately, failed to endure in popularity. Despite his recorded legacy, relatively little of his output has found its way to reissue recordings, making this CD very welcome.
Exceptional Sound Quality, Professional Transfers.......2003-03-31
This CD contains some of the earlier work done by Eddy Duchin from the 30's. The sound transfer quality is exceptional barring none. I highly recommend it as it sounds as good as it would have right out of the cutting lathe amplifiers! Nice job folks. I have collected all of the Diamond Cut CD's and love them all.

Beautiful Rudy Vallee Songs.......2005-10-12
This is a superb collection of Rudy Vallee songs. Each selection showcases
the unique gift of Mr. Vallee's great voice backed by his excellent
Connecticut Yankees Band. The songs flow effortlessly one after another,
possessing a magical quality enticing one to stop everything....and listen.
Every song is delightful, including St. Louis Blues and Let's Do It (Cole
Porter) to the beautiful melodies of Deep Night and Reminiscing. If you
enjoy music of the thirties, you also will not want to miss the wonderful
music of the Hal Kemp Orchestra and of the British label Asv Living Era's
"La Cumparsita" (Francisco Canaro).
Listening to this wonderful music will transport you to a more innocent and
romantic time. It is inspiring and rejuvenating, with excellent sound
quality, and is an absolute must to add to your collection!
Exception Recording Restoration Work.......2003-03-31
This is an exception example of fine audio restoration work. It has no clicks for pops, very little hiss and distortion and sounds like it was recorded very recently with modern equipment. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys the old sound but properly restored to modern standards.

Ha-cha!.......2007-01-14
The EDISON record company didn't release electrical transcriptions until June of 1928, fully three years after the process had been perfected. This delay was due to stubborn resistance from the head man himself. By the mid-'20s, Thomas Edison was nearly deaf. Since he had final OK on which records went into production, Edison needed a way to preview company test pressings. He discovered that by biting down on the cabinet of an acoustic gramophone, sound waves would travel through his jawbone to the inner ear, thus he could listen to these 78s.
Edison couldn't distinguish between the new electrical recordings, which had a far wider frequency range, and the old-style acoustic ones, so he saw no need to modernize. It was only after company sales tanked that he agreed to release what became known as "ELECTRICALLY RECORDED --Needle Type-- RECORDS." The EDISON folks manufactured these until October of 1929, a mere 16 months, and then ceased operations altogether.
EDISON laterals, some of the rarest of 78s, are highly prized by collectors. Many of the tracks on the CDs issued by DIAMOND CUT PRODUCTIONS, including some on HOT DANCE OF THE ROARING 20'S, are one-of-a-kind test pressings. All come from the EDISON co. archives. Sound quality of these nearly 80-year-old sides is remarkably good. The HOT DANCE album has a 12 page booklet, including seven that detail the EDISON records story.

Beautiful Sound! Wonderful History.......2003-03-31
This CD has beautiful sound quality notwithstanding the fact that it was mastered at the very beginning of the electrical recording era. These cuts are almost impossible to get anywhere else. Very fine job.
AN EXCELLENT CD OF "HOT" DANCE BANDS OF THE 20'S.......2000-09-08
EVEN 1920'S JAZZ COLLECTORS ARE UNLIKELY TO HAVE HEARD THESE RARITIES, THIS SET IS HIGHLY ENJOYABLE, AND FEATURES SOME HOT SOLOS, AND IS VERY JAZZ ORIENTED. ASIDE FROM A COUPLE OF BAD BAND VOCALS THIS CD IS GREAT. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, ESPECIALLY TO COLLECTORS OF 20'S JAZZ, WHO ARE UNLIKEY TO HAVE ANY OF THIS MATERIAL.
Great roaring 20's dance bands !.......2000-04-03
If you like the later 20's dance music you will be pleased. Very good lively tunes. I hope they decide to issue more in this series. Highly recommended !

This is an excellent example of Audio Restoration of late 1920's music. Vaughn has a very sweet voice that is addictive to listen to.

Vaughn Deleath has a very sweet soft voice. Very nice to listen to. I love this Cd.
Vaughn DeLeath Edison recordings audio quality tops for 1928.......2001-01-16
From an audio technical point of view this recording is way ahead of its competitors considering it was 1928 and electrical recording had just been invented. I like the fact you can clearly understand every single word she sings. I for one am looking forward to hearing any new releases. I know more masters do exist
Some good 20's pop singing..........2000-05-19
Vaughn DeLeath was a popular vocalist during the late 20's. A very popular radio star, who was definately under the influence of Annette Hanshaw(a superior jazz singer from the same era) however she is limited in her style by also being influenced by Al Jolson, therefor there are plenty of sappy overly dramatic ballads, and vaudevillian style singing, at times almost operetic, though not bad for a singer in the pre Crosby & Armstrong 20's. Try Annette Hanshaw if you want pure jazz singing in the 20's.

B.A. Rolfe -- so round, so firm, so fully packed.......2007-01-22
The pleasantly rotund Benjamin Aldolphus Rolfe had one of the earliest coast-to-coast network radio shows. Rolfe's long musical career began at age 6, when he played solo piccolo at an ice rink. His youth was spent as a clown-musician in a circus, after which he emulated his dad and became an orchestra leader. Next B.A. owned a silent movie company. When that business eventually failed, Rolfe and his cornet returned to orchestral work. In 1926, he and his aggregation landed a contract with NBC radio and the "Lucky Strike Dance Hour" went on the air. The show ran five years.
In 1928, Rolfe signed with the EDISON company to record some electrical transcriptions for them. For various reasons, very few EDISON laterals were ever released. Thus, most of the songs on B.A ROLFE AND HIS LUCKY STRIKE ORCHESTRA are one-of-a-kind test pressings or limited run unissued material. It's evident from these twenty tracks that Rolfe fronted a fine group-- their placement on nationwide radio during the Twenties dance band craze was more than justified.
Sound quality throughout is very good, especially when considering the material's age and rarity. The album includes a nicely detailed eight page booklet. Recording dates for all selections are given.

brilliant!!.......2003-04-13
In regards to the person from jersey city wanting more of warren vache's recordings and maybe sheet music diamondcut has their own website. They have various other recordings which are worth looking at. the roaring twenties is a personal fav of mine and the cover reminds me of a "House of Elliot" type of theme.
perhaps you can contact them in regards to mr vache's music. They were very helpful when I contacted them for more info about Peter Mendoza.
Oh ps, I dont believe anyone working at these "radio shaks", would even know who warren vache is, so I am convinced diamond cut does not buy their equipment from radio shak either.
One That Will Please.......2003-04-11
The repertoire is comprised of mostly familiar standards, but you won't get bored listening to this CD. Originally issued on an obscure LP on the Starfire label, Diamond Cut has filled the CD with more than a hour's worth of music, in very good sound, by adding five previously unissued titles from the same 1977 concert. Of special interest is Clarence Hutchinrider reprising "Smoke Rings," the selection that brought him to the public's attention when he was featured on it during his tenure with the Casa Loma Orchestra. Of this recording, the IAJRC Journal CD reviewer wrote: "Here is one that will please most of you, I'm sure." I concur.
Great Music, sound good too.......2003-04-09
I really liked this CD. The music is very good and the sound quality is excellent, especially considering how and when it was recorded. This brand of Jazz is very accessible to me and I don't consider my self a jazz fanatic at all. In fact this has led me to get more of Vache's music which is equally great. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes music.
Jazz, Its a Wonderful CD!!.......2003-03-31
This is a splendid recording of great Jazz musicians performing live in the mid 70's. The engineering is absolutely exceptional with the sound as crisp and clear as one could ever possibly imagine bringing it right into my living room as if I was at the concert. Beautiful job, folks. I wish more producers knew how to engineer live recordings as well as these folks do. I am addicted to this recording and it is quickly becomming one of my favorite CD's. Keep up the good work!

The First Lady Of Radio.......2007-01-16
Vaughn DeLeath ("The Original Radio Girl") was credited with inventing "crooning," a style later employed by Bing Crosby and others. DeLeath did so to solve a technical problem. Early linear radio amplifier tubes were delicate and suseptible to shorting out from powerful female vocalists, so DeLeath cooed her numbers in a low, lullabye style.
In the 1920s, Vaughn DeLeath was quite popular. Today, very few remember who she was. This is a shame, because this gal's mellow alto voice was so pleasant to hear. Several sides on EDISON LATERALS 5 * VAUGHN DELEATH are never-released test pressings. The laterally recorded discs the EDISON company made in the last year or so of its existence were treated with indifference, shoved onto dusty shelves in the Edison Laboratory attic. That any have survived at all is miraculous.
Some tracks in this set would nowadays be considered politically incorrect, as they're sung in dialect. "Mah Lindy Lou," "Dusky Stevedore" and "Honey, I'se A Waitin' Jes' Fo' Yo'" are examples of what were once called "coon songs," while "Mariana" has DeLeath using a pseudo-Italian accent. On many selections here, she performs with only piano backup, which is usually the way DeLeath appeared on NBC radio. And that is the appeal of this album-- the chance to turn back the clock to the 1920s and experience "The First Lady Of Radio" in her element.
