Customer Reviews:
Great music, even if you didn't see the movie.......2007-05-31
First, let me say that I have seen Dead Presidents many times. Hearing the soundtrack brings back memories of each corresponding scene. The artists and the songs comprising this disc are some of the greatest artists of the late 60's and early 70's. Walk on By has been remade so many times that it is great to have the original version. It's sad so many people only know Isaac Hayes as the voice of the Chef on South Park. This song, along with Never Gonna Give You Up by Barry White and If You Want Me to Stay by Sly and the Family Stone are some of the greatest songs of the 70's period.
This is an excellent addition to the music collections of those who love 60's and 70's R&B.
Fly A** Walk Thru The 70's.......2007-03-29
I've seen the movie Dead Presidents many times and enjoyed it but the music throughout the movie blew my mind! So I had to have this soundtrack. I was born in the 80's but the music from the 70's basically set the trend for the music we hear today. Today's artists copy beats from 70's music and this CD explains why. Sit back, relax and fantasize hanging out with Foxy Brown or Superfly. Just listen to Track No. 3 and hear why the world fell in love with James Brown and will forever miss him. This IS real music. I just wish the CD had more tracks.
"...Nixon Talking About Don't Worry..." - Mayfield.......2007-03-06
I never saw the film, but the soundtrack is simply superb, it's definitely a must have.
This album's been lodged in my car's CD player for a few months now and just keeps pumping out great stuff over and over again. About five or six years ago I used to listen to it a lot while driving, for some reason I put it aside and never got around to listening to it much after that, now I'm back listening to it all the time.
Isaac Haye's version of Walk on By is excellent; however the two songs that stand out are The Spinners' I'll Be Around and Mayfield's If There's Hell Below. When I'll Be Around kicks in it's impossible to ignore the beat and harmony upon hearing that initial rhythm guitar and background drums. It's easily one of the catchiest records to come out of the early 70s.
Mayfield's ode to a possible pending apocalypse is simply sensational with its driving base beat and quasi rap feel. Lots of great lines fill up the lyrics of that song.
In my book, if there's a 'must have' CD this one is towards the top of the list.
Hot just like the movie.......2007-01-06
There is no words to describe this soundtrack. For those who don't know, this soundtrack has one of the hottest line-ups of 70's artist there were. I love the ole' school. If you like ole' school too, you need to get this cd!
Old school... and great!.......2004-01-19
You want great 70's music??? This is the soudntrack for you. It will take you back in time wihtout skipping a beat. One of the best soundtracks of oldies I have heard yet.

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06
Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D
Good overview.......2007-04-18
Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.
Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08
I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!
Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02
Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.
Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04
The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.
Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.
Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.
This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.
If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

five stars.......2001-08-30
In my opinion, many 70's R&B compilations (Pure Funk 1 & 2, etc.) tend to focus heavily on funk and danceability, often at the expense of many slower but beautiful soul songs. I'm not one to dispute the greatness of funk or James Brown (whose 2 tracks on this album are both great) but it is nice to see a compilation of slower and equally great soul songs. Anyhow, I strongly reccomend the album, maybe even more than the first volume of the Dead Presidents soundtrack. My only qualm is that it includes a version of "we people who are darker than blue" from the early 90's rather than the original version from the album "Curtis")

This IS the BEST version........2006-09-23
Lyrically Amazing! Jay was rippin this with stories of the street life with phenomenal visuals and rhythmic wordplay. The b-side is also a cool track featuring Foxy B. However, we all bought this 12 inch for one reason. Reason being... Jay-z at such a raw stage in his rap career. A+++
One of the best songs ever.......2006-07-27
This has to be one of the best songs ever, but not just in rap. Jay definately made a hot line a hot song. One thing that makes this songs stand out is how much you could have a laid back beat, then just add your own skill and flavor and devour the track. Jay-Z is someone who does that well. Now-a-days people only care about perfecting slick beats and using so-so "artists" with these monotone voices. Jay's wit and charisma (not to mention rhyme skill) made this song a classic.
Top 10 Rap Song Of All Time!.......2006-03-29
This is Jay-Z's best song, without a doubt. The beat and the lyrics combine perfectly, as do all of his songs from the classic album Reasonable Doubt (if you don't have that album, you're crazy). As you will read from the other reviews, this was Jay-Z at his finest, at his 100% best. This single is actually worth buying because it has the instrumental version and both versions of Dead Presidents(same song, different lyrics) Bottomline, this song is a classic top ten rap song of all time. Beat-Amazing, Lyrics-Amazing. If you don't get the single, then you better go get the album, Reasonable Doubt.
Classic single from Jay Z.......2004-04-29
This is a rap classic by the Jigga man and is easily his best and most reveared song of all time both Parts I and II are classics however Pt I is a notch better. He was so good back in the Reasonable Doubt days this is definantly recomended
Lyrics 10/10 Beat 10/10 Overall 10/10
Dead Presidents: Incredible hip-hop song.......2004-02-12
The Dead Presidents 12" Single was Jay's 2nd single to be released and it helped generate somewhat of a buzz in anticipation of his Reasonable Doubt LP. Let me go ahead and tell you that this is one of my favorite hip-hop songs ever (along with Dead Presidents II). Ski of the group Original Flavor laced Jay with this amazing beat and Jay rips the track to pieces. It samples Lonnie Liston Smith's "Dreams of Tomorrow" and also incorporates Nas's voice from "The World is Yours" into the hook. If you're lucky enough to find someone selling this single for a reasonable price then I definitely recommend that you buy it. If not, then just buy Reasonable Doubt for Dead Presidents II (with different lyrics). But of course any REAL hip-hop fan would already have that album anyway.
