If you are to buy only 1 CD for Brass Enemble, Get this! It captured the BEST of the Candian Brass (one of the top brass enemble in the world). It has all the nice tunes, e.g. Four Seasons, Cannon in D, etc. Strongly recommended.

I first heard Jon & the AMG one Saturday night at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday in Clearwater, FL. They came on just after a particularly uninteresting straight-ahead jazz trio had pretty much put the crowd to sleep. Jon & the boys opened with "So Damn Good" and within 60 seconds they had me and the 9,000 other people in attendance partying our brains out. I've been a HUGE Jon Cleary fan since that moment. Buy this CD. It's great. If you don't like it you're an idiot.

I bought this CD a few months back, and it is, without a doubt, one of the funkiest things I have ever heard. I listen to it at least once a day, and the cover of the Meters tune "Just Kissed My Baby" is worth the price of the CD alone. Cleary is a master, and the Monster Gentlemen live up to their name, and then some. I love the CD so much, it brought me out of retirement as a keyboard player. Every single person who has heard me playing this CD has asked me about it. I work in a bar, and put it in the CD player one night, and every head in the place was bobbing, and I even got requests for repeat plays. You cannot go wrong with this CD!!!!

This is a great funky groove start to finish by a guy and his band that is
only getting better. Its great to see him with Bonnie Raitt
on tour and as her keyboard player. He just brings out the best
in so much of Bonnie's newer stuff. He is by far the most funky
keyboard player I've heard in a long, long time. I love this new collection!!

I've been listening to New Orleans Funk for 3 decades & traveling to Jazzfest since 1990, and have heard a LOT of N.O. funk. Cleary performs and writes for Bonnie Raitt, and has a wonderful ear for arranging. This CD is very diverse in its musical jendre but still draws you to listen over and over - I've had it in my car's player for weeks at a time. It is the BEST - and just a little askew of what we commonly hear as N.O. Funk. Cleary's a fabulous songwriter and a creative arranger of 'old standards' such as "Just Kissed My Baby." This is definitely one of my top 10 CD's I own.

Not the George Clinton and P-funk kind of funk music but in a funky groove all of its own. Cleary (originally a Brit now adopted by New Orleans) gives this album a distinct New Orleanian flavor and passion with a cruising kind a funk---meaning that you can listen to it in your car to jam, at cocktail hour, at a club or even jazzfest. The best part of this CD is that I didn't feel the need to say---he was better live. It's just that good!

Bonnie Raitt fans have long been familiar with Jon Cleary's funky keyboard work and have often been privileged to see the man open her shows with his band, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen--one of the greasiest aggregations on the planet. Cleary's previous outing attempted to capture this live magic in the studio, but managed to merely hint at it. For this recording the British ex-pat wisely adds a little modern studio gloss to tunes like "Agent 00 Funk" and "Oh No No No." This way, instead of inevitably paling beside the group's intense live shows, Pin Your Spin offers something new: an equally down and dirty recorded experience that borrows from today's hip-hop studio techniques without sacrificing any of the group interaction that makes this band so special. Having lived in New Orleans for two decades, Cleary is steeped in that city's second-line tradition, but he is equally influenced by the moody groves of '70s Miami soul. "Caught Red Handed" brings these roots to the fore. Elsewhere Cleary demonstrates the well-rounded musical chops, soulful singing, and terrific songwriting that caused Raitt to deem him "The Ninth Wonder of the World." --Michael Ross

Although Cleary relocated to New Orleans from Great Britan, his music and vocals are steeped in the traditions of the Big Easy. Although the song writing on this outing is not as strong as his previous effort, there are some standouts. "Si, Si" is a strong R&B influenced latin tune complete with a salsa piano breakdown. Cleary is a master of the keyboard and comfortable with a variety of styles, but really shines when he digs into his down home approach to bluesy R&B. Bonnie Raitt knew what she was getting when he toured with her a fews years back - an emotional insrutmental and vocal talent. On yeah, the band smokes throughout!!

What fun! I saw the Absolute Monster Gentlemen at the Santa Cruz Blues Festival and bought this CD on the spot. It captures what I heard and liked in the live performance perfectly, and adds a little more. New Orleans Funk is a good description, but I love how the latin piano sneaks in from time to time. "Agent OO Funk" is a rollicking funk number. Enjoy!

There isn't a finer live act around than Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, and, on Pin Your Skin, the full magic has been caught on record. I can't imagine that 2004 will provide a funkier, deeper, and more utterly satisfying album.

Crescent City keyboard virtuoso Henry Butler has electrified and energized his recent recordings, mixing large portions of funk into the proceedings. The sound is a far cry from the sublime acoustic simplicity of his classic Blues After Sunset, but it has its own attractions, and producer Dave Pirner, a fellow New Orleans resident best known as the frontman for Soul Asylum, exhibits them well. Tunes like the acidic "Casino," a hard-edged, guitar-punctuated protest of the tourist focus that is slowly strangling NOLA's music scene, serves to illustrate Butler's musical abilities outside his signature syncopated piano artistry. Veteran guitarist Vasti Jackson, who has worked with everyone from Z.Z. Hill to C.J. Chenier, provides the perfect foil for Butler's keyboard work while also deftly reinforcing his R&B-flavored vocals on songs like the live-set favorite "I Stand Accused." Butler reverts to his earlier style for several keyboard excursions, such as "Ode to Fess," his tribute to New Orleans piano legend Professor Longhair, and "Henry's Boogie," a sparkling showcase for his percussive piano approach. --Michael Point

This is not a bad album, it's just a disappointing one. Henry Butler has more talent than 99.999% of the pianists out there, but half of the disc is just pseudo-funk or smooth jazz schlock. I'm still waiting for Henry to release another disc as good as BLUES AFTER SUNSET--there's a five-star disc.

I happened upon this CD when visiting New Orleans last spring and fell in love with it. The music is traditional New Orleans jazz at its finest even though many of the tracks are Dr. White's own compositions. If you love New Orleans jazz but get tired of the relative handful of standards heard on many CDs (and at Preservation Hall), buy this CD. Tracks like "Dancing in the Sky" will have you dancing wherever you are.

As a side note, Dr. White and three other displaced New Orleans musicians performed in Kentucky over the weekend, and I was privileged to see them. The concert combine great music with some fascinating jazz history lessons by Dr. White. He and the other musicians are talented, classy people. In this difficult time, they need our support--and our CD purchases--more than ever.

Kid Koala brings us 2.5 new tracks on this single: "Basin Street Blues" (4:47), "Vacation Island" (3:28), and "Exciting Excerpts" (0:41), plus an animated video of the title track.

For "Basin Street Blues," Kid Koala assembled the standard note by note, pulling individual bass line notes from several records, a gentle banjo for rhythm, and San's masterful slurring and scratching of a trumpet over the top of it (think "Drunk Trumpet," following the BSB melody). The result is a freakishly tasty, dawdling (90bpm) rendition.

"Vacation Island" opens with warm cinematic strings that dissolve into a lazy ukulele and steel guitar beat juggle. A mellow horn, an occasional beat, and a farewell sample give the track some needed direction; the Hawaiian beat juggling can get repetitive by the end.

The animated video to a 3:30 edit of "Basin Street Blues" is perhaps the best part - a visual to remember as you listen away from your computer.

His sound remains as playful and melancholy as ever, and if Basin Street Blues is any indication, his skills as a musician in the more traditional sense of the word are coming to the forefront in a big way. It's good to hear from Kid Koala again.
