Jeff Tweedy might carry the name recognition, but the rest of his band-on-the-side carries the mail on the fourth release from this Midwest all-star group. Though the Wilco leader teams with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris on a pair of nimble pop songs--the elegantly strummed "Listen Joe" and Kinks cover "Strangers"--it's Louris who's clearly at the head of the class with self-assured vocals ("Another Fine Day," "Think About Yourself"), lush harmonies ("Long Time Ago") and those unmistakable guitar leads ("Frying Pan Eyes"). Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy's obligatory rocker "Hurricane" is a high point, as is the album's lead track "You Make It Easy," which has Kraig Johnson warbling over a thumping piano lead and chunky fuzz guitar. But most welcome among the 15 songs are two contributions from Louris's fellow Jayhawk Marc Perlman: the refreshing "Corvette" and "Cure for This," a '60s-speckled pop song sung by Muni Loco, the wife of producer Paco Loco and the first female to grace a recording by Golden Smog. --Scott Holter

It might sound like hype, but as hype nips at your ears every day from every corner, who gives a damn? You're smart. Your BS detector is strong; take this missive with a grain of salt, but don't talk yourself out of opening your ears to this mix-by-one-band-how-can-this-be-one-band? that fell from the skies of Puerto Santa Maria, Spain and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Start with Gary Louris and Kraig Jarret Johnson's "You Make It Easy." A breezy love song about breezy commitment. Listen. To that solo. To those harmonies. Dare yourself not to sing along. Try to play "name the influences" and you will have fun but you will fail.

Then check out "Hurricane," and hear Dan Murphy, singing his guts out and having, like the title track he co-penned says, "another fine day." Dig Louris and Jeff Tweedy's "Listen Joe," and how they sing to themselves and a long-gone friend, "surprise, surprise, everyone dies."

Listen. To what every new breed that comes along calls "old school," to sounds baked into these guys since the days of vinyl. Feel the embers of all the mystics, all the Gram Parsons and Eagles and Zeppelin and Buzzcocks and Flaming Lips and Gorillaz (Kraig's fave of the moment) records and all the rest that they've ingested. Truly, these cats have forgotten more records than the rest of us have sold to the used record store.

"Don't it blow your mind like the first time? The dream is never over," they ask, on "Corvette," with the exuberance of high-schoolers playing together in the garage for the first of many times. Listen. To "Corvette". Then listen to Louris's "Gone". They have been through death and love and war and all the other vagaries of middle age in these new Middle Ages, and this is the sound of them coming out the other side - or at least trying to come out the other side - with friendship and rock `n' roll as their guides.

This album is seriouly influenced by the 60's and 70's era music. If you don't like that era, look somewhere else. Someone here stated that its been done before and done better. True, it has. But if you can find this record in a used store, it is definately worth a listen. It encompasses all the musical style of the last 4 decades and does it quite well. I can hear influneces of Beatles and Dylan on the last track, which just might qualify as the best on the record. So if you like the 60's and 70's music and are looking for something a little different, this just might be the record you are looking for. Don't hesitate. Buy it today.

Gary Lourig does hold his weight Another Fine Day, an album that mostly rests on his shoulders. Sorry to admit that besides the last song on the album, the best tunes on here are the two that Tweedy co-wrote. In acceptance that this would have been a finer album had Tweedy performed more of the labour, I still thought this was really good 70's inspired kuntry rock that sometimes reminded me of the Knack and more often a Thin Lizzy/Loggins and Messina collision.

I had such high hopes for this one! However, after about a dozen tries, I cannot stand this music. It is uninteresting and possibly contains the worst songwriting and lyrics I have heard in years. Or maybe it's the schmultzy music that is so unbelievably weak. Whatever it is, it has no magic, no risk, no intelligence.

Maybe a few more listens will help, but this album reminds me in a lot of ways of Bubble Gum music from the late 60's. Way too cute. After eight years I expected a lot more.

Okay, these user reviews are plagued by a high degree of subjectivity, though what is objective about music? Plainly speaking, after listening to AFD for four weeks now, I believe this disc is quite exceptional both in its variety, the quality of songwriting, and overall production. This was my first exposure to Golden Smog, but since I have explored (that is, purchased) "Weird Tales." I just don't have the same feeling toward that disc as I do for AFD. For the record, I am not overly enamored with Wilco's recorded output, and had no previous exposure to the Jayhawks. Another Fine Day, then, needs no antecedents to make a salient musical impression. I am not given to hyperbole, but can best sum up my feeling about AFD this way: I have already downloaded it in its entirety from ITMS, but am now ordering two physical discs from Amazon--one for my 24-year old son, and one just for posterity.

5 out of 5 stars I tripped and almost fell, but Vashti caught me.......2007-04-09

This album saved me..literally. Tripping as hard as I ever had, I almost called an ambulance because I was so scared. I put the album on and as soon as Vashti started singin "la lalala la la lalala la" on the song "Diamond Day" my bad trip turned into the best one I've ever had as the album progressed. She may have not saved my life, but Vashti saved me huge ambulance and hospital fees, and an explanation for anyone who asked of why I had to go to the emergency room.
Somebody else said the album seems to transport you to another world. Well in this case vashti brought me back home with her Diamond Day album.

Having just returned from seeing Vashti perform at Carnegie Hall in a review assembled by David Byrne, I am amazed that her voice still has that angellic dream quality that owed much to early Joni MItchell and a host of Brit folk-rock earth mothers. If you are familiar with Eric Andersen's BLUE RIVER, you'll have the aesthetic sense of this.
Discovered by Joe Boyd, but entirely lacking in whatever drive one needs to sustain oneself through the interminable disappointments os a life as a professional musician, Vashti's effort here was considered a one-off until the new wave of folk hippies somehow caught wind of her.
Hers is a truly beautiful and whispery type of voice, what might have prompted Richard Thompson to write "Beeswing" for example. She had no sense for what to do with her talent, and took after fellow wanderers instead of focuing on what was an ambitious and promising start. Boyd gave up. Bunyan wandered around northern England, the Hebrdides and Ireland in a tinker's caravan after the release of this record. God knows if she even collected a dime.
But here it is again, and hopefully she has a better focus. She has recorded a follow up, 35 years later, that is also a stellar effort. But in listening to this, in listening to her sing Friday night with Adem Ilhan, I can't help but think of Jack Hardy's "Tinker's Coin." Perhaps she'll stick with it now that new folkies seems to have dragged her back into the spotlight. She is still quite beautiful, with an extraordinarily emotional set of pipes. This is well worth it.

certainly these songs have the ability to take you far away..very interesting.if this is your cup of tea there is a fun donovan album "hms donovan" that is similiar in tone.And not to advertise another artist but if y ou like vashti and want more in this vein, you owe it to yourself to check out any of virginia astley's discs..more produced but in a very similiar vein.they both write songs that are like distilled moments caught in a timeless photograph..the english know how to do this music..

Found this at HMV in Calgary to my surprise last week. I had been looking at it on Amazon and wondering if I should get it. It is very pure and pastoral music. Strangely child-like as others have mentioned. That it is a story of a journey in a caravan with animals all presented in an unusual way makes it unique even for a folk music album. Something you just have to have as a bit of historical charm from the past.

Need to say more? This is one of the most beautiful and honest records western popular music ever seen. She sings beauty, so lovely, as some fairy enchanting gnomes in a huge yet peaceful forest, away from the horrors of humanity. That alien feeling you'll get it since its first five seconds and it will lasts till the end. Druids of the world unite!

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). This CD is just as great as the more recent "Ronan" CD. I clicked on 3 stars in error. This is a 5++ star album! His voice is sheer perfection, and the songs are wonderful. I also highly recommend the DVD of "The Impossible Dream," even though I didn't care at all for the London Community Choir who sing four songs. Note: The American version of the DVD doesn't have the 25-minute "Dr. Courageous" extra on it that the Irish version does. I saw him in concert last month, and besides having a voice that soars to the rafters, he is warm, funny and endearing.

Having seen Ronan in person recently in the U.S., I was impressed first and foremost by his singing ability, and second by his stage presence and warmth. He is a special performer and human being. I am proud to be a Ronan Tynan fan.

ronan tynan is a great role model for adults and children alike. he was born with a deformity and made a decision he would make something of himself, he had a goal and he surpassed it. no one puts as much of their heart into as he. he puts the audience into his songs, he makes us feel he is singing to each one of us individually. Here we have another great 60s influenced indie pop / rock CD from New York's LADYBUG TRANSISTOR. They are one of the most solid bands playing this style of the last 10-15 years. For those that don't know, this band has members of the ESSEX GREEN, of the famed Elephant Six collective.

Honestly, I like all of the Ladybug records and even without Sasha Bell (check out her solo record FINISHING SCHOOL)...this record is great. It's classic Ladybug...maybe a bit more country influenced. There are some incredible songs on here: the single, "Here Comes the Rain", along with "Terry" and "Always on the Telephone".

I highly recommend this CD for anyone who is a huge fan of Camera Obscura, Essex Green, the Clientele, Great Lakes, Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples in Stereo, the Elephant Six collective, etc. Good job Merge!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, i'm a great fan of this band and certainly was quite nervous about their new record - would it be as great as their last one? Now I know: Can't Wait Another Day is just as georgeous as the other Ladybug Transistor albums. Really beautiful music with Gary Olson singing for the first time all songs (because Sasha Bell left for The Essex Green). To me, Can't Wait Another Day is one of the best records of the year.

Another Day on Earth is an ambient song cycle that is full of yearning and a mood that Brian Eno has called "brave and resigned." Even in song, Eno is a master of ambience, creating detailed soundworlds and lyrics that don't so much make sense as create a feeling. It's taken him 15 years to create a new vocal album, and the songs span that time, with the welcome reprise of "Under," a devastatingly beautiful hymn of loss and redemption that dates back to 1991's aborted, unreleased My Squelchy Life album. It's turned up before on the Cool World soundtrack and Eno Box II: Vocals. Joining "Under" as one of Eno's most sublime songs is "And Then So Clear," a paean of wasted longing and hope with its cycling rhythm, ethereal guitars, and pitch-shifted vocal harmonies. You can hear Eno's love of gospel music on "This" and "Bottomliners," and can almost picture them in a particularly pensive Baptist church with his double-tracked vocals emulating a solemn choir. But it's not all minor-key reflection. Eno also unleashes a couple of fractured tunes, like "Bonebomb," which is from a project in which he mutated the meter of poets reciting their works. Not as good as WARM JETS or TAKING TIGER MTN (how could it be?), but still, some mighty fine Eno-ite stuff here. A few fillers, but most of the tracks pay off on repeated listening.

It didn't hit me over the head right away, not like his classic 1970's vocal albums when he was the old multi-colored, multi-gendered alien invader Capt. Eno, right after he left Roxy Music. But gawrsh, that was over 30 years ago; there would be something wrong, if he hadn't grown, if he were frozen in (admittedly fantastic) time, if he still did the same things he did back then, right?

So, now, "this" (pun intended, from the lyrics of one song) it is growing on me, creeping along in my subconscious memory, after a few replays...... and I think that's kind of his matured intention.

Engaging the subliminal ... Not a direct square hard brick, not a smoking "Baby's on Fire", but rather, a .... ? a growing sense of deja vu, something you remember out of a dream?

I mean, these are songs, with great production, lyrics, his honest/imperfect voice, way more upfront than some "ambient" soundscape, but still sharing, or growing out of, that same sense of surrealistic haunting, established by some of his best "ambient" works.

I've never felt compelled to write one of these before but
I bought this the week it came out and it keeps getting better.
It's been in rotation at my business and home almost the entire time.
Of all of last years releases I can't think of one that I play more
and I'm starting to think it's one of his best albums.
Not bad for an 'old man'.
So I guess it was worth the $15.
I never detected any political message in this album,
and even if there was, so what?
Slow Train Coming rocks and I'm not born again.

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

Despite racking up Tony nominations and/or box-office success with Nine, Grand Hotel, and Titanic, Maury Yeston remains a relatively unknown Broadway auteur. And yet, what a fabulous songwriter he is. Listen to "Home," for instance: This excerpt from Phantom (the other adaptation of Phantom of the Opera) has great melodic hooks, along with natural sweep and unrestrained emotion. Like every song on this CD, it also has such dramatic drive that it easily stands on its own outside of its regular narrative frame. This collection of new recordings provides an excellent overview of Yeston's talent, juxtaposing numbers from his three best-known scores (though there's only one from Titanic) with rarities and a generous selection from his 1991 song cycle December Songs. Christine Ebersole, Liz Callaway, and Betty Buckley turn in expectedly strong performances, but watch also for Laura Benanti (the star of the 2003 revival of Nine), Christine Andreas, and Foster Sutton, who completely make the material theirs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Like others, I bought this CD primarily for Sutton Foster's rendition of "I Want to Go to Hollywood." And while that's wonderful, the real surprises here are the songs from Yeston's song cycle "December Songs." Christine Ebersole and Christine Andreas give absolutely lovely, technically proficient, completely heartfelt renditions of "My Grandmother's Love Letters" and "By the River", respectively. I'd heard Andrea Marcovicci's recording of "December Songs" and was seriously underwhelmed. These two tracks just prove that Yeston might have over-estimated Marcovicci's range and technical ability. "By the River" is a revelation in the right hands, and Ms. Andreas's rendition is just four minutes of wonderful. I also want to mention Howard McGillin's "No Moon". This little song from "Titanic" is just so moving. Pulled out of context, it becomes a little jewel of metaphor.

The CD as a whole is beautifully recorded, with an intimacy and clarity that makes you feel like you're in the first row of a very small theatre. If you come across this and you're on the fence, take a chance. I bet that you'll be as pleasantly surprised and deeply moved as I've been.

How could one put together a Maury Yeston Songbook cd without a track from Andrea Marcovicci? He wrote a song cycle for her. Granted there are some great singers here but a grave oversight to not include Ms Marcovicci.

Maury Yeston may be musical theatre's unsung genius to the public at large, but I've heard his praises sung many times. A friend convinced me to buy the original Broadway cast of "Nine", and while there were some fantastic songs and an undeniable melodic gift throughout, it left me lukewarm. The same with "Grand Hotel". And I couldn't stand "Titanic" - too big, too self-important, too reliant on booming low brass and bombastic orchestral swells.

"Phantom" was the only one of his scores that touched something other than distanced admiration in me. It was everything Sir Lloyd Webber's popera travesty could never quite aspire to - epic yet human, beautiful and touching, with songs that showed actual details and emotions. So it was with that in mind that I purchased this, figuring that maybe Maury could prove me wrong, shorn from the restrictions of a book musical format.

And by God, did he prove me right and then some.

Maybe it's the singers. Maybe it's the perfect orchestrations. Maybe it's just the absence of a plot to follow. More than likely, it's all three, but this is one of the most gorgeous, enjoyable, heartbreaking albums I've ever purchased. Yeston has assembled an impressive cast to give voice to his music - such heavy Broadway hitters as Alice Ripley, Brent Barrett, Betty Buckley, Christine Ebersole and Howard McGillin mix with up-and-comers like Eden Espinosa, Sutton Foster, and Brian d'Arcy James. But the most impressive turns are given by people I'd never heard of before - Johnny Rodgers (who?) has a voice spun from gold, and he's absolutely perfect in "Danglin'", a simple and powerful song despite some odd lyric choices by Yeston. Likewise Philip Chaffin in "My True Love" and "I Am Longing", and Michael Holland displays a warm and untrained performance of "Another Day in the Modern World". These three men, who I'd never heard of before, absolutely stole the show. It doesn't hurt that they're given some of the best songs from the album.

Of course, the rest of the ensemble uniformly turns in worthwhile performances. The professionalism of Broadway is gloriously evident here, each singer making their song uniquely theirs. Brent Barrett made me hear "Only With You" as if for the first time. Betty Buckley is surprisingly vulnerable in "I Had A Dream About You". Alice Ripley is her usual bundle of raw emotion in "Please Let's Not Even Say Hello", and turns in a rare comic performance in "Call From The Vatican" to great effect (listen to that surprise high note near the end! Wow, Alice!). Christine Ebersole is heartbroken, elated, vulnerable, and tough all in the course of "Grandmother's Love Letters"' 4 minutes.

There are some weak spots - Eden Espinosa is mostly one-note during her song, and while it's certainly a high note, it's nothing you haven't heard her do better elsewhere. Laura Benanti's "Now and Then" goes by without much notice, which is a shame for this talented actress. And Betty Buckley goes back to her usual high-volume stridence in "Be On Your Own", which despite its chilling music deserves a more nuanced performance than Buckley gives here. But these songs would be standouts on any other album, and it's only the company they keep that prevent them from being excellent.

Oh, and "Unusual Way", possibly Yeston's best-known song, is so beautifully performed here by Brian d'Arcy James and a three-piece band that I nearly cried hearing it. And that's quite a feat for a song that I swore never to listen to again after the seventeenth girl in a day auditioned with it (badly). But the gender swap works perfectly, and d'Arcy James' golden Irish tenor swings through the music effortlessly.

As for the band - there are no missteps here. Each song is given exactly what it needs, from the Romantic-with-a-capital-R string section on "Home", to the jazzy saxophone on "Letter From the Vatican", to "Be On Your Own", which is given a Herrmann-esque string section. Some particular touches stand out - that lovely acoustic guitar on "Danglin'", the simple piano line on "Modern World", and the sublime cello/piano outro in "Unusual Way" really stuck with me after the album stopped playing. And the recording is without fault - crisp, encompassing, personable and expansive as the mood requires. The whole album sounds fantastic.

There is such a wide range of style and substance here that each song would deserve purchasing individually. As a collection? It's bliss. If you're a fan of theater music, appreciate great vocals, or just need something to keep you company on long nights, this is required purchase.

I think Yeston must be the most underrated talent in music theatre. And not just music theatre ... for as far as I know, "Danglin'" is not from a show - a jewel of a song ... and a disarmingly honest rendition from Johnny Rogers (what a beautiful voice! Why hasn't he made more CD's?) Some other favourites are "New Words" (not enough parent-child love songs out there ... and I can't imagine it could be sung any better than this), "You're there too" (with a charming and unexpected twist), "Simple" (Callaway is superb), "Only With You" (loveable rogue!) ... to name but a few. Inspired music theatre writing. A must for any musical buff, composer or singer seeking repertoire that will help them stand out from the crowd.

A good album sung by good singers. I have been an admirer of Maury Yeston for a number of years . I am a great fan of "Nine"
which I consider his best work.(If possible try to listen to the
Australian Cast Recording with John Diedrich) I enjoy listening to artists like Alice Ripley, Brent Barrett, Sutton Foster,and my very favourite singer Liz Callaway. All in all a great CD to just sit back ,relax and enjoy Les Breen

If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.

This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.

The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.

There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.

This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.

This is a fun disc to have.

This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.

Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.
