5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-01-17

I was prepared to like the content; I've been a Kerouac fan for 40 years. What blew me away was the packaging. Included are postcards describing the various tracks, with photos and quotations. The combination of the tracks and the way the CD is packaged make it irrestible. What a great gift for a fan this would be!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reading By The Premier Beat Poet.......2004-04-27

If you've read any of Kerouac's books, and likely if you're reading this review and considering this purchase, you have - then you are truly in for a treat.

This is an excellent Spoken Word disc.

Hearing Kerouac reading his own words, the wonderful cadence of his voice, the slight Massachusetts accent coming through, the improvised jazz be-bop, and even the very crisp noise registered when he turns the page of his ever present notebook - this is the Kerouac you've wanted to hear since you first read "On The Road".

He expounds on San Francisco, Allen Ginsburg, Jazz and Be-Bop, and impressively The Beats.

Hearing him describe the "beat" in the opening track, the tempo he uses, the tonality in his voice, you'll hear what the "Beat Generation" is all about.

The excellent liner notes and packing, some of which are presented as postcards, indicate this recording was made sometime in 1958 or 1959 and Mr. Jack Kerouac is at his prime.

This is a treasure, a real gift for the Kerouac fan.

I strongly suggest you purchase this excellent recording. The production values are very high. The sound is crisp and clean.

Thank you Verve Records for this real historic find.

5 out of 5 stars The King of Beat Defines Beat.......1999-08-16

Since I read On The Road, Kerouac has changed the way that I viewed prose and poetry. It is here in these recordings that I heard the voice of Jack himself. Often humorous--at times even daring to be silly, he shows how literature isn't dead and dusty meant to be spoonfed to school-children--But it breathes, slides jumps from the soul to the tongue to soul of others. These works are pieces of Jack's vision of the "American Night." They are real, gritty, and intense. Unedited, and bleeding. No cliches. No reliance on sentiment. So if your ready for real art, put down that Tom Clancy novel, and check this CD out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars "The angel bone is connected to the God bone....".......1999-08-07

The words seem to flow from an other wordly source much as mantras flow from the mouths of tired old bhikkus. It's nice to hear Jack himself read his works not some later day rock musicians posing as "literary types" who probably read On the Road once just to tell their friends they are "hip." You can get stoned from this CD alone.

5 out of 5 stars this be beat.......1998-11-22

Almost certainly (benzedrine?) charged by something illicit in the bloodstream Kerouac here rumbles and clear throatedly gives a word-slinging embrace to the microphone, there's power in these words, he punctuates it by stops and hesitations you can hear the paper rustling as he moves on. It was my first time hearing his voice and as that tired whiskey broken tone carried over the jazz and the beautiful women I can again understand the allure of beat again.

This three-disc set is a gold mine for anyone with even a passing interest in the music, the poetry, and the people of the beat era. The stars--Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs--are here, of course. But so are the players (Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan), the architects (Kenneth Patchen, Kenneth Rexroth), the cutups (Lenny Bruce, Lord Buckley), the pretenders (Rod McKuen, Edd Byrnes), the critics (Carl Sandburg, Howard K. Smith), and the heirs (Tom Waits). What a great selection of vibrant poetry, hip music, and sonic ephemera. The well-annotated booklet offers classic photos, historical context, cool quotes, and, perhaps most important, an extensive "Beat Bookshelf" that will lead to further exploration. Dig this crazy box, man! --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars Get this back in print - now! One of the best albums you can own.......2005-08-08

This is, outside of the first "Nuggets" box set, the most played multi-artist compilation in my collection. The greatest thing about this collection is the wide variety of peices included. There are readings by the major players of the generation (Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs), beat Jazz (Don Morrow, Lee Konitz), various parodies or outsider views of the movement (the "Basic Hip" recordings, the clips from the cult film "High School Confedential", Bob McFadden), the comedians (Lord Buckley, Lenny Bruce), and the sucessors (Tom Waits). In other words, this is an absolute must-buy for anyone with a passing interest in America's first counterculture movement. This was one of the most fascinating and unique eras in American history, and the Beat Generation was a blow against the conservative American ideals and dreams. The highlights of the collection are obviously the readings. Hearing the geniuses of the time read their own work is just as fun, if not more so, as reading the books themselves. Each one of the top three (Ginsberg, Burroughs, Kerouac) has an unique style of writing and an unique style of delivery so that you can tell each one apart from the other. Outside of the readings, some of the selections are odd but none don't fit in with the overall concept of portraying the movement. This is almost as much an essential as the writings of the Beats, and is a fascinating portrait of America's original counterculture movement. Why did Rhino let this go out of print?

    5 out of 5 stars It's 1957 Forever!.......2005-01-16

It's January, 2005 and sleeting outside in Shin-Urayasu, Japan, but I'm here wailing with Jack Kerouac. Steve Allen is tinkling away on the piano, and Ben Hecht is waiting to ask Jack some smart-aleck questions, which Jack will answer in an innocent, pure-heart, eternal good-guy way before heading back out on the road. This three-CD set is incredible. Not only do we get a sense of what the big names of beat-dom were up to, but we are treated to little-heard beat-fare, like a hyper-beat effusion on falling in love with a horse from Lenny Bruce, and zany reflections of beat-dom from such square media dogs like Perry Como crooning about his young beat honey, and Howard K. Smith, who gives us the low-down on THE COOL REBELLION. Kenneth Patchen's "The Murder Of Two Men By A Young Kid Wearing Lemon Colored Gloves" is a gem, and Kenneth Rexroth's hang-dog rendition of "Married Blues" is yet another great cut I would never have heard otherwise. Langston Hughes fronting his own jazz band is a treat too, but there's lots more. After listening to all 3 CDs one can get a pretty good idea of the scene, both from the inside, hipster's angle, and from the square's point of view, too. Generous cuts from Gerry Mulligan's Quartet have me snapping my fingers and reaching for my sunglasses. Forget the sushi and pass the nutmeg!

5 out of 5 stars Root, Vout and Dig It ! ! !.......2001-01-08

What I love about the Beat Generation Box Set is that in addition to serving as a great social portrait of the era, as well as hipster culture, throughout it maintains a sense of humor and focuses on its strange relationship and rivalry with American pop culture. Beyond mere literary readings, a colorful cast of charactors make the scene... from beboppers to hipsters, bongo beating philosophers to comedians and pop icons arise. One track might be Annie Ross's bebopistic tribute to Schizophrenia "Twisted", the next a recitation by Lord Buckley or Ken Nordine - in other tracks, square singers try to cash in on bebop and hipster culture... reporters go out on the streets of Greenwich village in search of America's lost youth, while others show beat generation icons in action from Dizzy Gillespie to Slim Galliard and Ray Brown Jr. - - Cuts from the rare, "How to Speak Hip" and even Lenny Bruce's Psychopathia Sexualis (I'm in Love With a Horse That Comes from Dallas) appear.

While by no means comprehensive, the three CDs along with the illustrated booklet are not only educational but incredibly entertaining.

If you enjoy this album, be sure to check out a reissue of Ken Nordine's Colors, as well as stuff by Harry The Hipster Gibson, Slim Galliard and Leon Watson, as well as the movie, "Sweet Love Bitter" (based on the life of Charlie Parker.)

5 out of 5 stars Loved it, Loved it, Love it!.......2000-07-26

Great Jazz, poetry, and spoken word. A diverse group of artists are included in this boxed set. It is a window to another time that suspiciously looks similar to our own. I cherish this collection. I don't know how I survived without it. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars The apocolyptic soul of the beats!!!.......1999-06-26

The breath and life of the beat generation is expressed in total array in this box set. The Bird is god and Kerouac is an angel to deliver the soul of truth onto a new generation of tripped out, wild, outcasts which have been labeled "misfits" by the societal concept. Live on true beats.

I just picked this up, I can't get it out of my CD player! Awesome stuff!

      4 out of 5 stars intelli-breaks, saavy beats.......2001-12-06

if there's one thing about koma and bones it's this; they definitely posess the precision of dropping in a lyric, picking up paces and feeling the exact moment when to let the forward beat back away and let the undertone take you over. flavor after flavor will ooze from your speakers as you track through these "nu horizons". if break beat is your thing or if high energy vibe is what you thrive then do yourself a favor and let koma and bones take you to "the next generation of breaks". a well conceived smart sounding piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars everything old is new again.......2003-08-08

If you are at all a fan of the beats, you will love this disc. It soars giddily along.

4 out of 5 stars A new take on a classic jazz gem.......2003-01-28

The song is from Robert Frank and Arthur Leslie's quasi-vérité film, Pull My Daisy (1959), featuring major Beat writers Jack Kerouac (narrator), Allen Ginsberg, Larry Rivers and Gregory Corso. This new rendition is true to the original. The band Curse skillfully updates the jazz classic capturing the essence of the 1959 soundtrack. Helping capture the essence is the fact that Composer Amram plays on it. Amram grooves on the riff like never before, with spontaneity all the way. Marc Ribot shines as special guest, adding his trademark guitar stylings to the mix. The most interesting part of this single is the "B side" Graveyard Shuffle. The track is reminiscent of 1940s swing, only in the context of a rock n' roll track. Here, Amram and Ribot strut their stuff along with the NYC band.

4 out of 5 stars Can't be "beat!" (aw that was a terrible pun).......2006-03-09

The only thing not "worth it" on this CD is the price. Thirty-something bucks is a bit steep. (I got it at a Virgin Megastore for &10!) Otherwise, a great CD with Kerouac readings interspersed with bop's greatest hits. The excerpts provide a lucid yet credible backbone (assuming you can take them seriously, not as period-piece fodder) for the body of works. The essay is also transcribed in the hefty booklet. My only complaint aside from the price is that it's an oversized box which doesn't fit into a CD rack.

But why complain when you have Dizzy, Miles Davis, Hamp, and Monk at hand!? You can't!
