Survival Of The Illest: Live From 125 N.Y.C. [Explicit Lyrics] [Live]
Editorial Reviews

Survival of the Illest presents 72 minutes plus of live hip-hop from most of Def Jam's late-1990s hit makers--Onyx, Def Squad, and DMX--captured in the home of hip-hop, New York City. A common occurrence in rock music, live albums are an anomaly in hip-hop. Perhaps it's because the music--bass-heavy and loop-oriented--rarely makes the transfer from the live venue to the digital confines of the CD, with attempts often resulting in a muddy mess. On Survival, Onyx deliver a raucous, fist-waving set of hits, from "Throw Ya Gunz" to "Slam"; the Def Squad (Keith Murray, Erick Sermon, and Redman) run through seven tracks, including "How High" with special guest Method Man; and newcomer DMX rips up nine songs, including "Money, Power, Respect" with the Lox, and "4,3,2,1" with Method Man and Redman. Surprisingly, the production is fairly clean, with rhymes audible and beats devoid of distortion, but it's still no substitute for actually being at the event itself. Strictly for the hardcore heads. --Spence Abbott

Customer Reviews:
The other reviewers don't have any idea.......2001-05-11
Maybe its because the others who reviewed this cd aren't from New York and have no real understanding of what good music is that the rate this cd so low. What they don't get about this incredicble live album is that it features the timeless classics of Eastcoast rap performed infront of a screaming crowd. The worst part of the cd is the envy you gain from hearing the reactions of the audience members. I believe someone wrote that it starts out bad and gets better. I don't think that anything opened by QB underground legend Cormega could ever be bad, especially DEAD MAN WALKING. If you like hip hop and want to better understand it BUY THIS CD.

This is the *hit.......1999-10-24
Even though this cd is live it's kickin. All the groups on this cd are phat. This is a good cd to get baked to. Anyone out should pick this one up.
KINDA THE BOMB.......1999-03-23
This CD is semi-decent. It starts out crappy, then gets cooler and cooler till the end. Def Squad does some phat songs in this. If you like Cormega, Onyx, Def Squad, or DMX, you should get this
This CD Is OK.......1999-02-27
Not the best CD I've ever got, but not the worst. Since it is live there is a lot of talking in between songs, this is the gayest thing about this CD But it's pretty good, the best rapper on this CD is definately DMX.
