Sue Foley Deborah Coleman Roxanne Potvin `time bomb' Ruf Records

Sue Foley and Deborah Coleman come to this recording with deep credentials in the blues rock world, but Roxanne Potvin is not a name that I am very familiar with, but more about her later.

Often this recording is pleasing and at times very hot, especially on the NRBQ'ish rocking opening instrumental title track- Foley's `Time Bomb' which definitely races in true pedal to the metal fashion and just roars and soars! Foley's `So Far' is a rip roaring affair with a rockabilly tinge that is one of the finer compositions I heard from Foley in a while, and offers top notch blazing guitar rev-ups as Foley really wails on this track! But I could have done without her corny `Show Me' which really does not fit well with the rest of this CD. Coleman covers James Brown's `Talking Loud' in a Grateful Dead'ish `Shakedown Street' funky mode, complete with wah-wah effects, sassy background vocals, and is one of several fun tunes on this hip recording. The Coleman authored `Motor City' also utilizes soulful background vocals, and allows Deborah to do what she does best on her driving guitar, and the band also kicks in mightily especially the thumping bass of Jim Anton, and the strong B3 work of Mark Lickteig.
Potvin's `Get Up' is probably her best contribution here, but all due respect to Potvin, this CD could have easily been a Sue Foley meets Deborah Coleman recording, and does not need the third-wheel singer/songwriter/guitarist, as it would have been neat to have a couple of Coleman/Foley collaborations, especially instrumentally.
The albums closing track- Billy Davis' `In the Basement' made famous by Etta James is a riotous hoot, and allows all three ladies to sing a verse or two, and this tune is outstanding selection to round out this very neat recording.
`time Bomb' works very well at least half of the time, which by today's standards makes this CD a very nice recording to own. I would be remiss to leave out the fine production work of Kevin Bowe (best known for his work with Robben Ford, John Mayall, Etta James, Tommy Castro, Jonny Lang, and others,) and to the executive producers Thomas Ruf & Sue Foley, bravo!

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2007-06-04

I bought this CD several years ago even before it went on market in U.S., aftering finding out that she has a new CD coming out on her website. I was so excited that I ordered this CD from amazon.uk, paid twice the money too, as it was being released there several months before it was to go on sale in U.S.

However, after I listened to this CD, I was hugely dissapointed. While it has a great production value, orchestration, and showcases Vanessa-Mae's violin skills, I found most of the compositions to be nothing spectacular... and frankly, tedious... This failed introduction into Vanessa-Mae's work actually prevented me from trying out her other CDs for the past several years until now. For newcomers to Vanessa-Mae, I find her "The Violin Player" and "Best of Vanessa-Mae" to be immensly more superior CDs than this one.

5 out of 5 stars If a Virtuoso.......2006-11-13

I absolutely without thought purchase all of Vanessa Mae's CDs'. The best aspect of her genius is her creativity and passion - you hear it in every note! She is without a doubt a first-class violinist who shoves traditional boundaries aside and absolutely roars like a muse - unrivaled.

3 out of 5 stars Technically superb but the melody is not exciting..........2006-08-16

Vanessa Mae is an amazing violinist. Her notes literally dance and you can hear the spirit in the music. But I did not enjoy the music chosen on this CD. The tunes are not exciting.

GREAT MUSIC AND I LOVE THE SABER DANCE.

5 out of 5 stars the best Vanessa Mae CD yet........2005-08-28

Definitely liked it. She's always been a great violinist. the improvement is in the background composition. the score with music by Vangelis is awesome and the rest of the tracks are amazing.

This compilation comprises five tracks from Shanté's uneven debut Bad Sister, six from her merciless sequel, The Bitch Is Back, plus an over-produced new song and the deathless hit single, "Roxanne's Revenge," teenage Lolita Gooden's smart-ass riposte to U.T.F.O.'s "Roxanne, Roxanne." Shanté has attitude in her veins, and nobody else can come up with a dis as devastating as hers. When she turns her attention to dance tracks, though, it's not as effective as when she's tearing new orifices in MCs she doesn't like (meaning any who aren't named Roxanne Shanté). But then there's her voice, a high-grade sandpaper wonder, breathlessly racing through her catalog of snaps, like a bratty little sister who's fought her way all the way up to the throne. --Douglas Wolk

The R.O.X.A.N.N.E.is still one of the best that did hip-hop! The actual culture off hip hop is present in the FIRST queen of rap. Much props for this album, a classic.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but could have been better.......2003-12-05

Roxanne Shante', by no doubt is one of the Queens of hip hop and I have always loved her work. This is a great album and it showcased many of her early hits, but I just wished that this greatest hits collection could have included some of her freestyles that she used to do at her concerts. She used to battle the Cold Crush Brothers, UTFO, Real Roxanne, and others. Other than that, this was a great album for many of her fans to hear.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but her best tracks aren't here.......2001-03-17

This is a lost opportunity. Roxanne Shante's best tracks were the three singles she released before her first album. Only the first one, 'Roxanne's Revenge' is here, and it was always the weakest of the three.

If you want to hear Shante at her very best, then the two following single releases 'Queen Of Rox: Shante Rox On' and the apocalyptic 'Bite This' are the tracks to find. It's incredible that they're not on here.

The tracks that are here are some average tracks from her debut album, (in which she went for the mainstream and lost what made her good), and better ones from the second album, which included her fourth and last classic track, 'Big Mama'. Not bad overall, and better this than nothing, but without those two singles, this is a very flawed compliation.

5 out of 5 stars the REAL queen of rap!.......2000-07-31

this cd is a definate must have for old school rap fans! shante is the leader in the female rap ring!

    5 out of 5 stars Good effort 4 stars.......1999-09-02

I am still a big fan of Shante even though she is no longer in the business. I have reviewed this and I can say honestly say it is not worth 5 stars. The problem with this is not album content, it is Shante's career. The people behind all of this were not with her and that is why most of the people who were also on the label are not around or floundering (see Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Kool G. Rap, Craig G, Master Ace, T.J. Swann, Cold Chillin Records, Livin' Large Records). They had talent, but no guidance, no business mind and that is why none of them are in the game anymore and I blame that on the heads of the aofrementioned record labels. I love Shante, but the people guiding her career need to be drawn and quartered. I will give it 4 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Steaming pile of dog crap.......2005-06-13

Wow...this CD is just horrendous. Just absolutely, mind-numbingly horrendous. I'm not sure anybody could come close to ruining some of these great classics as "Classics Regrooved" does.

I'm not trying to come at this from an elitist perspective, and say that electronic artists should keep their mitts off classical music altogether. I love to see the influences of great old music on great new music. But, honestly, there are just some things that should not be done. I love breakbeat, I truly do. But if you need a thumping breakbeat to feel the awesome, raw power of Verdi's "Dies Irae," you seriously need help. If you need to loop beats under Rachmaninov's "Prelude in C#-minor" to access its surging emotions, you should really just stop listening to music altogether.

I wouldn't just say this because I don't think electronic artists should touch classical music at all, because there are some tasteful renditions out there. For example, William Orbit's remix of Barber's Adagio for Strings was very well done. Nothing can touch the original of course, but as far as remixes go Orbit's rendition maintained the emotion and beauty of the piece and put it nicely within the sphere of electronic music. So, in this CD's case, it's not that they tried to redo the classics that made it so bad. It's that even in terms of electronic music, this whole CD just plain sucks. I mean, we're talking just completely unlistenable. Skylab 2000's pathetic rendition of Beethoven's Fur Elise is totally absurd, Eros has irreparably massacred the beauty of Schubert's "Ave Maria," and Joseph Jaime's version of the Rach prelude literally made me laugh out loud.

Please, for the sake of your own wallet and music altogether, do not buy this CD. It is of the worst, lamest quality, and I will be surprised if I encounter anything else this pathetic for a long time.

3 out of 5 stars Not your father's "Hooked on Classics".....................2005-05-31

Not your father's "Hooked on Classics" and it shouldn't be yours, either! Most of these songs are painfully unlistenable. They take a snippet of classical music (most of it distorted, synthesized music) and add a lot of discordant electronica which gets repeated over and over (and over). A couple of good songs does not a CD make! Save your money. Instead, check out the group "Bond" for more traditional classical music infused with an infectious dance beat! REVIEW UPDATE: After repeated listening to this CD, I must admit that some of the tracks are starting to grow on me---not enough to outweigh the tracks I don't like, but enough for me to raise my review from 2 to 3 stars. The inspiration for these tracks is not light, feel-good baroque music (as I had originally anticipated) but "heavier" classics which makes for a darker, more intense sound. For remixes of classical music that aren't quite as harsh, check out the CD "Masterworks Reworked."

3 out of 5 stars Not for Purist Classical Music Fans.......2004-11-19

however, if you like edgy electronica beats and remixes you might give this a try. My two favorite tracks aren't really re-mixes but brillant electronica reorchestrations of the original. #7 (by far the best track on the CD next to track #13) Joseph Jaime surprises with his arrangement of Ase's Death, a somber section from Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite. Jaime keeps the bones of the original, but turns it into progressive upbeat hip-hop, if there is such a thing. Jaime's heavy hip-hop grooves and pulsing synth pads contrast with the mood of the original, and help him make the piece his own. As well as #13 my favorite of the two Casey Baldwin's interpretation of Ravel's Pavene for a Dead Princess. Other notables: Track 1 skylab 2000's "regroove" of Beethoven's Für Elise and track #5 Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 5 remix. The rest of the CD could have been better this is true and perhaps if they come out with Classics Regrooved #2 it will be 15 tracks of they style from Skylab 2000, Casey Baldwin and Joseph Jaime. the other tracks really aren't my style but no doubt listeners that don't mind a break from tradition will find some interesting tracks.

      1 out of 5 stars Classics regrooved re-grooved ? Sucks.......2004-10-22

I bought this expecting something wonderful, and got crap. The remixes are choppy, lackluster and not at all what one would expect. Eros' mixes were HORRIBLE, so were skylabs and electric skychurch. The worst mix would have to be Casey Baldwins, who is that anyway?

These are names that aren't big enough to be doing big classical songs..save your money and go buy a cafe del mar cd. This was the biggest waste EVER!!!!

This is a good greatest hits. Good beats and she was nice on the mic. She also proved that she can be very vicious in battle on bite this and bad mama. A true hip hop album. Any old school hip hop head will be satisfied with this. Now you probably wonder why I give this a 3. Well Shante's high pitch voice happens to get very annoying after the first 6 tracks. I normally have to throw on somethin else, comeback and pick up where i left off. For me, this is an album i can only listen to once in a blue moon. Usually when I crave to hear a female rapper that actually has skill.

4 out of 5 stars Roxanne Shante Best Of Cold Chillen.......2005-03-25

The cd is hot Roxanne Shante was by far the hottest female mc back in the day. I think the cd is missing a few tracks like Loosey's Rap, Roxanne Revenge the Street version and this free style they use to play on wbls called Wash Ya Body. It was like an answer record to Doug's fresh La Di Da Di the cut was tight. I think who ever buys this will understand waht old school was all about hot lyrcs.

4 out of 5 stars THE QUEEN OF ROX,ROX ON...............2004-01-18

Roxanne Shante....excuse me... Dr.Roxanne Shante, pioneered this thing and blazed a trail for female emcee's to shine, sure there was Sha rock,Sequence,Mercedes Ladies,& Lisa Lee before her, none have made the impact Shante made when she came through in late 84 kicking the door open becoming the first commercially viable female rapper. A nice collection of material here a lot better then the first inception of a greatest hits collection that came a few years prior, however some classic jems are missing of course "Quuen of Rox","Loosey's Rap"w/Rick James and some of her not so lyrical yet quirky battle stuff from her fued with J.J.Fad "Skeezer".overall I enjoy the CD bring backs memories of slicked back pony tails, and huge doorknocker bamboo earrings, and a fiesty attitude, come on we all have known a Shante.

5 out of 5 stars Why does everyone hate it so much?.......2005-12-24

I personally think this is a rather inspired and at worst, fun remix of Sting's song. For anyone reading this who hasn't heard it, it has been tailored for the 90s R&B/Rap audience who without noticing followed Puff Daddy's massive career throughout this era. The remix basically involves rap verses from Pras (from The Fugees) followed by a "chorus" by Sting singing the main parts of the original "Roxanne", accompanied by extremely "Contemporary R&B" strings. I personally really enjoyed this remix and think that people take it way too seriously in defending the original song. If you are a modern R&B fan (or like 90s R&B) you are likely to love this as I do. If you are to take any remix of a Police "classic" seriously to the point when someone can't remix it, please do not buy it! Hope this helps!

      1 out of 5 stars The worst..........2005-01-10

And that be even worse than Sting in dueth with Craig David who ruined Shape Of My Heart with his pathetic Rise And Fall.

I find no good excuse as a big fan of Sting for him to allow this damage strike one of his most famous songs ever.

Puffy is awful, no matter if he's a good dresser. His biggest hit ever, I'll Be Missing You -his adaption of Every Breath You Take- first left me with that well-earned impression.

Stop messing up Stings' fantastic songs, even though he allows you, Puffy!!!

      1 out of 5 stars WHAT?.......2004-03-30

Sting, what have you done? Why must everyone keep re-mixing and re-making everything? It's pointless! ARRRRGGHHH! Okay. Enough of that. This used to be a classic. Now, its just some piece of crap that that idiot P. Diddy re-mixed. Seriously, has that guy ever come up with his own song? Please, vote yes on the keep P. Diddy away from music act. Save our music.

1 out of 5 stars Sting fans shouldn't buy this.......2003-10-05

      If you're a Puffy Daddy/P. Diddy fan, buy this...I guess. If you're a Sting fan, please don't.

      1 out of 5 stars P. Dudley Does It Again....Ooooooh Boy.......2003-07-07

Absolutely HORRID. There's one very important thing to understand here: Sting is a proper songwriter; P. Dudley is not.
      He should never have touched this classic to begin with,as he can't come anywhere near Sting or his mastery of songcraft. Seems he wrecks anything he touches--just look what he did with Led Zeppelin's Kashmir. Hey,Dudley,a word of advice: you should only remix what you (think) you could do better,or at least just as good in another way. But for God's sake KEEP AWAY FROM THE CLASSICS!!! that's where your obvious lack of talent truly shines through. :}
