There's pressure to perform when your last name is Allman, and Devon Allman does that and more on the debut album with his band Honeytribe. The son of legendary Allman Brothers' singer and organist Gregg Allman, Devon shows the influences of both his father (guttural voice) and late Uncle Duane (lead guitar straight out of the blues). Just barely 30 years old, Allman has encircled himself with first-rate musicians who have latched on to the jazzy, jam band elements of the Allmans and their brethrens in Gov't Mule. Though Allman's vocals aren't as silky or golden-toned as his old man, he has an ear for a solid Southern riff, most evident by bluesy efforts like "Mercy Mercy" and the Z.Z. Top takeoff, "Why You Wanna Bring Me Down." But there are more serene highlights on the record, as well: the love song "No Woman, No Cry" and the instrumental "511 Texas Avenue," a solo acoustic tribute to his late grandparents that wouldn't be a misfit on Eat a Peach." --Scott Holter

Being from St. Louis I remember seeing Devon in some of his previous bands. They were good, but nothing that made me want to tell everyone to run to his shows. This is different. I think he's found his groove. Great job guys!

5 out of 5 stars Way to Rock, Devon!.......2007-05-09

Honeytribe is a outstanding group of musicians fronted by Devon Allman who assuredly has "the force" running strong in him. He has the voice and the chops to carry you away with good heart and soul rock and roll. Songs on this cd run the gamut from pensive to full out rockin'. I have always been a sucker for a Hammond B3 and that sultry Leslie horn; and with Jack Kirkner, it's played with intensity and soulfulness. George Potsos is mean on bass, laying low when he needs to and getting adventurous when he has the reins. Mark Oyarzabal on drums rounds out the beat with gusto. If strong blues based rock does it for you, you owe it to yourself to 1) get this album and 2)get yourself to a live show! This past weekend got to hear Honeytribe and Government Mule live and am still running high on the experiences!

4 out of 5 stars Right on!.......2007-03-26

I agree with all previous reviews, if you dig the Allmans and Govt Mule, you will dig this CD. It is with the current southern, progressive jam vibe. His take on the Marley classic "No Woman No Cry" is a highlight. Take a chance on this newcomer and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars This is good stuff.......2006-12-29

I'd never heard anything about this band until I saw this CD on [...]. I was buying a Govt Mule Cd and it was listed as one of those "Others have Bought" this cd: I checked it out and saw that Devon was the Frontman, Being a big Allman Brothers fan, I bought it and am I'm glad that I did. Kind of expected "Greg Allman Clone" style of music. I was wrong about that, this band is doing their own thing and man is it good stuff. If you're a fan of Electric Blues then do yourself a favor and buy this. You won't be disappointed. Nice to see that some of the younger generation is making good music and not wasting their talents with the usual boy band crap and chasing the all might dollar.

4 out of 5 stars Good one!.......2006-11-13

Like very much this last cd of Devon Allman. Not much to do with the allman bros.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cd of the year.......2007-05-14

This is an awesome album. I hate to put labels on artists, so I won't. Just buy it if you like modern rock music. Best when hopped up on caffeine while driving to work.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Debut Album!.......2006-06-10

Why can't more modern rock bands sound like this? This cd starts off great and every track is a head trip all the way through. If you love bands like The Strokes, Superdrag, Oasis, The Stills and love harmonies, then this album is for you. Definitely grab yourself a copy, I know you won't regret it. I hope these guys will get some recognition in the near future and music fans will start appreciating them.

5 out of 5 stars the next big thing.......2006-06-07

if you have any appreciation for great music this is the cd that you have to have. no matter how many times you listen to it, you always have to say one more time. i promise it is a cd that you will listen to for years.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-08-07

If you love vocal harmonies, you'll LOVE The Winter Sounds. This CD is amazing and they are really great live as well. Gone to Save Mankind, Poor Sailors, and The Great Forgotten are (imho) the standout tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing talent, amazing artist.......2007-07-19

If you like rock but not the same old melodies that are found in rock music today then you'll like Porcelain Empire.

If you like punk but you don't like the screaming or unusual chord changes, then you'll like Porcelain Empire.

If you like old 80's pop-rock that contained very catchy lyrics and great tunes to hum to, you'll fall in love with Porcelain Empire.

The Winter Sounds have really done it this time with their latest album, Porcelain Empire. Try to imagine punk, alternative rock, and disco music all slammed together and backed by harmonic vocals. You'll like this album if you like rock or if you don't. You may not realize what genre you're listening to because the harmonies will engulf you. It will leave a good impression on your mind after listening to this album, whether you prefer soft, hard, or pop music. If you've never heard this band before, listen to samples from Poor Sailors, Windy City Nights, Oblivion, and Gone To Save Mankind. I highly recommend buying this album and I also recommend seeing them perform. This is definitely a band to look out for. They are exploding with potential and WILL be big.

Album Description

Livewire Recordings - Sleepless In Seattle: The Birth Of Grunge is a 20-track, various artists compilation project that surveys the beginnings of Seattle's underground rock movement in the late 80's - early 90's.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good overview.......2006-07-11

Eventhough not all songs are as great as some of Seattle's grunge hype brought us, this CD is sure worth a good listen. From the early recordings of Mr Eff and Malfunkshun to the more friendly grunge noise of The Gits, Supersuckers and 7 Year Bitch, you will jump up and down in your seat while listening. And yes, it is nice to find a CD without the Big Three (or Four) from Seattle

5 out of 5 stars Haha first review........2006-05-18

I love this album, Especially Orange Airplane and Grinding Process, Orange Airplane from the Trees is like a pyschedelic rock song with westcoast punk influences...I think that's probably the best description...it's from Clairvoyance before they signed to a major label...Grinding Process is a freakishly slow dark and heavy song and is one of my favourites from the Melvins...I love the fact that it's possible to have a grunge compilation without a token Nirvana song. (I love Nirvana i'm just saying.)

    Album Description

Incorporating vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, banjo, bass, drums, piano, organ, live strings and horns, the Jacksonville, Florida native's "Dewdrops" is a brilliant, organic mix of acoustic based songs, coupled with layered melodies of sound that will capture the heart and attention of all who hear it.The 14-song set speaks frankly of Ashton's own humanity, of a pride that battles humility, of loss in search of an explanation and ultimately, but most importantly, of love. Ashton has a natural ability to draw from within, expressing himself through a tapestry of words and music.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars You're not Elliott Smith, don't try........2006-05-04

This album would be great except for one thing; Elliott Smith already made this music with much more emotion and purity and soul. Being a big ES fan someone told me to check Ashton Allen out. This album only made me miss Elliott Smith more.

4 out of 5 stars Comparing to Smith.......2006-01-22

The first time I heard this album, I was struck by how much Ashton Allen reminds me of a lighter version of Elliot Smith. Of course, maybe that is not a good thing for Ashton Allen since Elliot Smith fans crave the melodic heaviness that Smith could bring to a song. Ashton Allen's songs may seem immature, not fully developed, or at least lacking something because of that comparison, which is very hard to avoid making. However, without that comparison, Ashton Allen's music is quite enjoyable, and I would definately recommend buying this album.

4 out of 5 stars Mellow album from newcomer Aston Allen.......2006-01-11

THE BAND: Aston Allen (acoustic & electric guitars, bass, piano, organ), Shannon Forrest (drums), Ilya Toshinsky (lead guitar, banjo, mandolin), and assorted players on violin, viola, cello, trombone, trumpet and french horn.

THE DISC: (2005) 14 tracks clocking in at approximately 50 minutes. A 6-page booklet includes song lyrics, band members and thank you's. All songs written by Allen. Label - Livewire.

COMMENTS: While this is good mellow music... it did not reach out and grab me as I had hoped it would. Allen's vocals are breathy - and he doesn't fluctuate much from there. He always seems like he's in the same mood, using the same tone. In hind sight, I wish he'd sing with a little more conviction - like the way a young Paul McCartney or Bob Dylan would do on some of their early acoustic songs. When I first heard the album, I could picture Allen singing his songs next to Phoebe Buffay at the local coffee house on "Friends". Allen's music fits into that safe adult contemporary lite-FM venue. Many similarities to Elliot Smith, Peter Yorn, Howie Day, early CSNY, even John Mayer, Coldplay or an acoustic Oasis. It's non-threatening music... the kind you might find in an elevator or a dentist's office some day. Allen is an accomplished musician and artist. He writes a nice song and plays many an instrument. He is most apt at his guitar. Several songs are strictly voice and acoustic guitar ("Dewdrops", "Every Hour Of The Day", "Prodigal Son"). Track 6 features Allen on piano with his voice matching the strokes on piano... probably my least favorite song here. The best songs are when the whole band is playing, complete with strings and horns... relaxed and unhurried in every way, filled with lush tones, thoughtful and smart lyrics, just beautiful melodies ("Better Than I Know", "Counting The Cost", "Steven's Song", "Something To Say"). Over all a decent debut - looking foward to hearing what his next few albums sound like... and, hoping on some songs he steps outside the box a bit. If you like songs rich and soft in quality, then this album is for you.

    2 out of 5 stars Elliott Wannabe.......2006-01-06

He's got all the sonic elements in place to be a perfect simulacram of the late, great genius, Mr. Smith..but what's missing is the substance, the soul...this is readily apparent through reading Ashton's lyrics: deep they're not.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2005-12-21

One of my favorites of the year. Smart songwriting, nice melodies. Comparisons to other artists (Smith, Drake, etc) are warranted and time will tell if Allen measures up to those guys.

Buy it. You'll like it. I swear.

5 out of 5 stars Wailers, Wailers Everywhere!!! Tacoma's Rock Band Icons.......2001-12-03

First, this is the ROCK BAND Wailers that came before Bob Marley. I must admit so some built in prejudice when listening to this great album... In 1965 my band lost its drummer, Dave Roland, to the Wailers who can be heard on many cuts of this album. That's Dave banging away in "Out of Our Tree" and singing lead while banging on his drums in "Bama Lama Bama Loo. Many of the cuts on this album exemplify the changes that went through the Wailers in the '63 to '65 time period when they has some personnel changes and transitioned from an instrumental/vocal band into a fine popular vocal group. The loss of Rich Dangel was great, but was replaced by a great guitarist, Neil Andersson... Mike and Mark left, but Dave and Ron amply filled the voids. These were dynamic and positive changes in the band that can be heard when playing the cuts in chronological order.
