Album Description
Are You Lookin' at Me? is Colin Hay's first studio album of new material in over five years. A tuneful, insightful meditation on life, love, sobriety, maturity and perseverance, the album finds Hay at the absolute peak of his craft. As a writer and vocalist, he has never been more masterful: finding intriguing new angles on instantly relatable scenarios, skewering and savoring in equal measure. His less acclaimed but no less formidable skills as arranger, engineer and bandleader insure that each song is supported by evocative musical backdrops ranging from electronic textures to plaintive acoustic balladry to classic guitar-driven pop. Are You Lookin' at Me? is unified by Hay's immediately identifiable voice, relentless curiosity, wonder and a decidedly uncluttered sound which has its roots in Hay's consistently busy tour schedule.

a great re-discovery.......2007-08-03
Overkill has always been one of my favorite songs, but I never thought to check and see what Colin Hay has been up to since then. My loss. I've been listening to this CD nonstop since picking it up. Added bonus it's a perfect soundtrack for the summer - at turns witty, fun, reflective, and poignant but always melodic, catchy, and wonderfully sing-alongable.
If you get a chance to see him live, another treat is in store. He's very funny and relaxed, his band is tight and his lovely, energetic wife provides heavenly backing vocals and an infectious energy and joy.
For a few other acts that started in the 80s but are still producing wonderful music, check out newer stuff from Waterboys, Roddy Frame (formerly Aztec Camera), Morrissey, and Kate Bush
Perfect!.......2007-07-28
I was lucky enough to see Colin Hay and his lovely wife perfom here in an outdoor venue last evening. The rain kept too many people away (although it did clear up for the entire performace). I bought his newest CD and it's a perfect listen. Thoughtful, funny, and beautiful. A great showman, a genuine nice, approachable guy and one of the most talented song writers that deserves so much more attention. Keep it coming Colin. I hope to share this CD with my friends who haven't rediscovered you ... yet!
I bought myself new glasses..........2007-07-15
Such a great CD. I came to know Colin Hay the solo artist via his song on the Garden State soundtrack. Then I picked up Man @ Work and Going Somewhere and have since become a huge fan of his work.
This album took a bit to grow on me and once it did, I couldn't stop listening to it. I think my favorite song is "Lonely Without You" but honestly, there's not one song on this CD that I skip past. It's a great listen from top to bottom and one of those CDs that you can have on in the background as you're chilling out or blaring through your speakers as you head out out of Hollywood and drive into the hills.
J.Merritt is right! .......2007-06-07
Try listening to Men at Work and feeling sad. It is NOT possible. Colin Hay has a voice and an attitude to cheer. My only gripe is that "Looking for Jack" is currently unavailable. Another great album from a singer with his mind on the pulse. Buy this and his other by-passed albums and feel refreshed! More please Colin!
The sun always shines in angel town!.......2007-05-31
Colin's new cd is great. This is the kind of CD you can kick off your shoes and hang out, cook, dance, bathe too. He has a raspy sexy voice (sorta reminds me of Huey Lewis a little). Some of his songs are deep and moving- but most of the songs are on the same page- so if easy listening is what you are looking for and need an even keeled, even-tempered cd then this might be the perfect one. Most the songs are great, musically and lyrically. His raspy voice seems to soak up lyrics like a sponge, and his lyrics swell with his voice. A few songs are a little weaker than others. Midnight Sun is not a favorite of mine, but it's still simple, easy, and just plain good music to chill to.

Customer Reviews:
An underrated songwriter.......2007-06-15
After a friend introduced me to Colin Hay by letting me listen to some of his music from the films "Scrubs" and "Garden State", I was an instant fan. I'm known for being partial to singer songwriters rather than bands, and yet Colin Hay shows a little bit of both. His style of music would make you think you're listening to a fully fledged band instead of a solo artist. Now this third solo album is a little different from the rest, being completely accoustic, just the man and his guitar. But that's the beauty of this one. Simplicity. The songwriter really comes out here.
The first track is clearly the best, being known a little more than the rest, perhapse due to its inclusion in the "Scrubs" soundtrack. "Beautiful World" is unique in a lot of ways. Being the best written song, it displayes the funny kind of cynicism widely known to be posessed by Randy Newman. That's why I've tagged this product as such. I'm a big fan of Mr. Newman, and I couldn't help but be reminded of his distinct style when I listened to this. A five star track if there was one, and very versatile as well. The second track is also a good one, "Looking For Jack". Nice tune, nice lyrics, and Hay plays the guitar to perfection just as in the rest. "Going Somewhere" is deserving of title track status, however I can't help but feel that some of the other material on this disc is filler. Maybe because of the similarities due to total acoustic guitar as being the sole form of sound apart from Hay's voice, I don't know. But the next two songs seem a little bit bland. If you skip down, the next really good song is "My Brilliant Feat" recognized for its chords which seem to stand out above the tracks surrounding it. The full 5.46 min. version of "Waiting For My Real Life To Begin" is heartfelt, and sometimes seems to be the story of my own life. It sounds real, like Hay really meant it. Also included is the radio edit of this track, but the uninterrupted version is the one you want to hear. Among the remainder of this album, those that stand out are "Lifeline", "Circles Erratica" and of course a new radio version of "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You". This is the first Colin Hay song I was introduced to, and the one that really hooked me. It also sounds true and shows the man in his true songwriting brilliance. 5 star.
This is a very good album, but I do wish it had one or two more really good songs on it to inflate it to a 5 star listen. Most of Colin Hay's best songs are included in movie productions like the ones I've mentioned. Unfortunately these songs were spread out over his first three studio albums rather than on one convenient disc. Of the first two I would recommend Colin Hay, "Man at Work", and for a version of Hay that's got more 'pop' to it, try Men At Work "Business As Usual". Hay has also released a fourth solo album just recently called "Are You Lookin' At Me?" which I sampled, but it doesn't seem to be as good as this one.
Try them both.
Colin Hay is exquisite!!.......2007-03-20
Colin Hay's voice is soothing and mature, and lyrics are exceptional. This CD will change your life for the better!! Colin gives insight and experiences to learn from through his music. He's come a long way since "Men At Work", the 80s band he was the frontman for. Buy this CD first, "Man At Work" second, and his new CD "Are You Looking at Me" which is due April 24th, 2007.
Gorgeous acoustic album!.......2007-03-13
With the 2005 re-release of the wonderful disc "Going Somewhere" it is evident that Colin Hay has come full-circle from quirky 80's/MTV phemon to a formidable songwriter of appreciable wit and charm, who can make other artists half his age look like they are standing still. And with thanks to some recent exposure on movie and TV soundtracks, Mr. Hay pulled together his most consistent solo album to date. Standout tracks include the immediately appealing "Beautiful World", the intensely moving "Waiting for My Real Life to Begin", and "Looking for Jack", a very catchy offering which, as Mr. Hay hilariously tells in concert, is about a run-in he had with one Mr. Nicholson. Add to this, "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" (featured in the movie Garden State, but not on the original release of this album), sweet 12-string work on "Circles Erratica", and some nice slide guitar on "Water Song" and you can start to see why this is such a fantastic little disc. Additionally, given that the album is somewhat of a patchwork quilt of previous efforts (several cuts do appear on earlier albums), in some ways it stands as a fitting document of a decade of high quality and underappreciated musicianship. And as Mr. Hay gets ready to stamp his trademark vocals and tight songwriting on an upcoming solo album of all new material, "Going Somewhere" may be the best disc you can get to hear what you've been missing out on all this time.
Awesome Ablum.......2007-02-08
I bought this because I loved 'I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You' from the Garden State soundtrack. I liked it from the first listen, which is unusual for me. Now, each time I listen to it I love it more and more. The songs are simple and powerful at the same time. His vocals wrap around me like a warm blanket. If you're not sure you should buy this...try it...you'll like it.
Master Songwriter.......2007-02-05
Colin Hay jerks at your heart while telling you a joke. You can find yourself laughing and crying at the same time. He is a master of his craft, but conveys a palpable humility in every track. His refreshing sense of humor is always welcome in my ipod.

COLIN HAY = FIRST-CLASS SINGER/SONGWRITER.......2007-06-11
While I can't say that I've followed Colin's career closely I can say that I've been aware of the fact that he has been releasing solo material from time to time. And to tell you the truth I thought that spending the time to check out his work would in fact be a waste of time. Well, I must admit that I was wrong, very wrong. Much time has passed since the days of Men @ Work and Colin now has an impressive body of solo work under his belt; work that he should be very proud of, and work that demands you take the time to explore.
Personally I really should have known to take the time to consider his solo work, mainly for two reasons: 1.) I have always liked Colin's voice, and how could anyone not, it is beautiful, soulful and absolutely unmistakable; And 2.) While for the most part I don't care for 'pop' music, I did and do like 'Business As Usual', and Colin's songwriting talent was clearly evident even on that first album. In fact, I would say, and you may agree, the vast majority of that album's appeal is in the well written lyrics. Yes, 'Business As Usual' is mainstream pop, which again is something I have never cared for, but if you really think about it most of the LYRICS on that album would have been equally at home on a singer/songwriter's album. For example; 'Who Can It Be Now?' is in fact a very well written and clever song about schizophrenia and paranoia, which is not exactly typical mainstream subject matter. Sure, I can recall it being done, but never anywhere near as well. Furthermore, even though to date Colin has not again realized the commercial success of 'Business As Usual', the success of that album was certainly not a fluke. And since then Colin has written even better material, singer/songwriter material, and has proved without question that he is a first-class singer/songwriter.
Now, about this particular album, not only does this album for the most part do away with the 'pop' of 'Business As Usual', it beautifully reminds you of Colin's extraordinary voice and masterful songwriting. 'Down Under' and 'Who Can It Be Now?' from 'Business As Usual' have both been redone acoustically on this album, and in my opinion are a little better than the originals. 'Overkill' and 'It's A Mistake' from the album 'Cargo' have also been redone, 'Overkill' acoustically and 'It's A Mistake' with an island vibe, and are also a little better than the originals. However, in my opinion the best song on this album is 'Waiting For My Real Life To Begin', which is from Colin's 2001 album 'Going Somewhere'.
In conclusion, I now own three of Colin's albums, all three are very good, and I highly recommend this one for purchase. But even if you don't take my advice and buy the entire album here, do yourself a favor and at the very least go over to iTunes and buy the song 'Waiting For My Real Life To Begin', which again is in my opinion the best song on this album. In short, it is a very moving and beautifully written song about not being happy with the way things are and living for tomorrow and what might be, instead of being happy and content with what is and living in the present.
A gem and a real surprise.......2007-05-02
A gem and a real surprise. This is a CD you will add to your treasured collection. If you are on the fence about this CDS, take a chance - you will not be sorry. One of the best CDs I have purchased in a while.
Man Does This Work.......2007-03-24
I bought this CD after seeing Hay on Scrubs playing "Overkill." It's a wonderful CD, perfect for kicking back after a long day or keeping in the background while studying. An excellent investment!

The magical triad behind Rushmore's spunky, starry-eyed soundtrack--music supervisor Randall Poster, composer Mark Mothersbaugh, and director Wes Anderson--leaps forward a decade from that beloved soundtrack's '60s gems, in the process adopting a more pensive feel for The Royal Tenenbaums' musical backdrop. It may lack the euphoric sing-along feel of, say, Creation's "Makin' Time," but the rock and folk tracks here perfectly match the film's crumbling characters and their dilapidated relationships. The Ramones' "Judy Is a Punk" is a burst of nostalgic rebellion but surely causes a sad twinge in light of Joey Ramone's untimely death in 2001; gloom-folker Nick Drake's "Fly" and Elliott Smith's excellently depressing "Needle in the Hay"--which is used to chilling effect during a wrist-slashing scene--further deepen the dark thread running through Tenenbaums. But those who prefer the sunny disposition of Rushmore will be thrilled by the calming concoctions of Mothersbaugh, who heralds the coming of a new scene with graceful woodwind/string parts ("Scrapping and Yelling") and playful sitar pieces ("Pagoda's Theme"). Throw in the Clash's squalling "Police & Thieves" and the Velvet Underground's petal-soft "Stephanie Says" and you've got another winning soundtrack from the film biz's most in-tune music lovers. Tenenbaum or not, you can go home again. --Kristy Martin

I like this soundtrack because its very laid back. Enjoyable songs that help you relax.
Help trying to figure out the title of a song.......2006-04-17
Hey, maybe you guys can help me, does anyone know the title of the song playing on a radio while owen wilson is getting high (or preparing to do so) with his friends and his dad and brother step in and tell him they want to help him. I really love that song and i have no idea what the title is
omitted song.......2006-02-01
For anyone interested, one song which was omitted from the soundtract which has not been mentioned is:
Emitt Rhodes - Lullabye
A beautiful track played in the scence where Royal is lying in his bed sucking down a shake and reading a book when Chas say "lights out old man" and switchs off the light. One of my fav songs in the movie along side the rolling stones - she smiled sweetly. sadly both songs were omitted but still a beautiful soundtrack.
Where's Van Morrison?!.......2005-03-16
This is a near-perfect collection of 60's and 70's pop and folk. The sad but hopeful vibe of the songs fits the movie's tone perfectly and you can't really agrue with songs like "Stephanie Says." it's also nice to hear the two Nico cuts since Nico's solo work really doesn't get the acclaim it deserves these days. My problem with this album is that it favors symphonic songs from the film instead of pop songs also used in it such as "Ruby Tuesday" and Van Morrison's "Everyone." I'm really bummed about the exclusion of "Everyone" because i thought it closed the movie so well. They should have released the score and the soundtrack separately so all these great songs could be included.
The Royal Tenenbaums Soundtrack.......2005-03-14
The Collector's Edition Soundtrack leaves out two great Rolling Stones' tunes She Smiled Sweetly & Ruby Tuesday. Also left to the winds is John Lennon's Look at Me, the Clash's Rock the Kazbah. The First Edition leaves a few tunes off too but it is a far better Soundtrack. Puckstar

Those leery and weary of tasteless crossover need not shudder at the sight of this disc, which has sold over half a million copies in Europe. There's none of the softcore kiddie porn that came with Vanessa-Mae or the heavily packaged faux romanticism of Andrea Bocelli. (That of course doesn't necessarily mean that you'll want Voice of an Angel.) This 12-year-old Welsh soprano is so uncloyingly cute and has such an appealing personality (with just enough touch of cheek) that you'd almost rather have her as a dinner guest than on your CD player. Her small, attractive, sometimes unstable but always sincere soprano perhaps went to the top of the British charts because it clicks into the boy-soprano choir tradition so prevalent there, especially since many of the selections are sacred items such as "The Lord's Prayer" and "Ave Maria." And Church may pick up some fans thanks to the tail end of Celtic chic, with the Welsh folk songs and the rendition of "Danny Boy." But this promises to be yet another short-lived media phenomenon, rather than the beginning of a lengthy career. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
STILL THE BEST OF HER ALBUMS.......2007-05-03
This is the first of Charlotte Church's recordings, recorded back when she was still a normal, unspoiled 12-year-old Welsh girl. I first fell in love with her voice when I heard her singing "I Vow Thee My Country" on the radio about 8 years ago, and was blown away to find out that she was only 12 years of age!
I bought the CD shortly after that and have listened to it a bazillion times. Just recently, I decided to pull it out again and found myself enjoying it just as much now as I did then. She was probably in her best vocal form in this CD, before her voice became "overtrained," and eventually, ruined by her "Crazy Chick" habits.
Among the standouts -- besides "I Vow Thee My Country" -- are "Amazing Grace," "Ave Maria," "3 Welsh Bird Songs," "My Lagan Love," "Suo-Gan," "A Lullaby" and, of course, her signature song, "Pie Jesu." At the time, I thought she had the potential of becoming one of the greatest sopranos of all time once she reached adulthood. Sadly, this has not been the case, and her latest album, "Tissues and Issues," is a reflection of how far she has fallen both vocally and in her personal life.
If you buy only one Charlotte Church album, this would definitely be it.
We are reviewing his talent, not his toughts.......2007-04-25
This CD is excellent, I can't believe N Arey put one star because of this issue.
What a shame.
Charlotte's Debut.......2007-04-03
This is just a beautiful album -- beautiful, beautiful music. The first time I listened to it, I didn't like it very much. I was coming off a coffee rush with a splitting headache and it made me wince every time she hit a high note, but over the past few days it's really grown on me, and I like most of the songs on the CD. I was suprised by which songs really touched me the most. I'm a Christian, so I expected to like sacred songs such as The Lord's Prayer and Amazing Grace the best, but I find that I Vow To Thee My Country and Jerusalem stand out to me the most. (I'm moved to all but tears by the former). Danny Boy and Panis Angelicus are also remarkably well done. The Welsh Bird Songs are boring -- but at least the album has a strong finish with "When at Night I Go to Sleep". Charlotte did a great job. Beautiful music from a gifted little girl.
The Best from Charlotte Church that You Will Ever Hear!.......2006-11-28
This CD is simply amazing! I can honestly tell you that this is the best from Charlotte Church that you will ever hear! Her voice in this stage in her career is so mezmerizing and well-trained! Soon after her second album, which was self-titled, her voice began to deteriorate, probably because of her constant smoking and drinking. Now, we've reached a low point in Charlotte's career, in which she has now been donned the "Crazy Chick", and her latest CD, entitled TISSUES and ISSUES, is a major flop. More recently, Charlote mocked the Catholic Church, calling the Pope a "Nazi". She currently has her own television show, and in one episode, Church pretended to be a nun, and got "high" on Communion Waffers that were stamped with a smiley face, which resembles the drug ecstacy. She also broke open a statue to find Communion Wine, and placed her gum on a model of the baby Jesus. Honestly, you cannot find blame with the 12-year old Charlotte, for I'm sure that she never would do such an offensive thing! (My best advice for getting back at her is not buying her new album).
Anyways, back to the album. Charlotte's first four tracks are amazing! "Pie Jesu" was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, originally for his wife, Sarah Brightman. I prefer Charlotte's version of Sarah's because Charlotte's voice does not show too much vibrato. If you listen to Sarah's version with Paul Miles Kingston, the boy soprano, from THE ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER COLLECTION VOL.1, you'll hear the difference! "Panis Angelicus" is amazing, and Church even sang it to the Pope! (Not the recent Pope, but the Late Pope John Paul the II). The third track, "In Trutina" - which means "In Balance", is from Bizet's Carmen, which is beautiful. Compared to Brightman's version, Charlotte has much less vibrato. "The Lord's Prayer" is simply beautiful! Jerusalem is also a magnificent work. "Ave Maria" is amazing, with soaring vocals. I don't prefer this version of "Ave Maria" because it's "Ave Maria, Ave Maria, Ave Maria" over and over again. I much prefer the "Ave Maria" by Schubert, which Brightman sings very well. However, this version is still in my favorites. "Psalm 23" is beautiful! "I Vow to Thee, My Country" is a sort of dragged-out piece, but I still enjoy listening to it. I don't prefer it because the song stays in the same key and the same notes are sung all the time! The next piece is "Danny Boy", which is OK. To me, it seems as though Charlotte and the orchestra are always out of sync, but I'm not sure. Plus, this piece is in minor! I'm not too happy about that. "My Lagan Love" is a beautiful piece, with clear vocals and lyrics. "Suo-Gan" is an awesome piece. In fact, a choir that I was once enrolled in sang this song, although it was in English. "Amazing Grace" speeks its title, which is AMAZING! The next three tracks are from "Three Welsh Bird Songs". They're in a foreign language, and I have no clue what they say, but they are wonderful all the same. The last piece, "When At Night I Go to Sleep" is beautiful, but I find it too short!
Overall, this album is great. Besides a few tracks that aren't my favorite, I'm sure that any loyal Charlotte Church fan will buy this CD and will stick it in his/her collection. Please - boycott against TISSUES and ISSUES - It isn't the greatest album anyways, with drawn-out yuckie ballads and too-hyped up pop tunes.
Charlotte, I hope you can read this! I loved you when you were a Classical singer, but now, I can't stand to look at your music! God gave you a gift, Charlotte, and you kicked Him in the face! Just remember this when your record sales for TISSUES and ISSUES flop!
Charlotte church is the best.......2006-08-14
This is the beginning of Charlotte Church. It came out like in '99. I was so amazed by her voice that I had to go and get the cd. Wow, her voice is amazing and always will be in my opinion. Even, though she has a pop album out I still like it. Also plan on buying it too. There are so many good songs on the cd. It's hard to choose because her voice is angelic. For some people who think she has a kind of boy/girl voice- don't know what their talking about. Listen closely the next time you play it. I'm starting out in singing opera and Charlotte is my role model. There is no voice like her yet, even Hayley Westerna, who also has a beautiful voice...can't be in Charlotte Church's shoes. Hopefully, she'll go back to her classical music or just do both.

Customer Reviews:
Music for Meditation.......2007-01-04
This is a delightful collection of music appropriate to meditative prayer. It is often my prayer companion, and I like the style and performance found on this CD. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy deeper reflection with a wordless musical background.
Be Thou My Vision.......2005-10-19
Track 3, Be Thou My Vision, was a surprise as the song was the final song played at my father's funeral. It set the closing mood most fittingly. While Be Thou My Vision is my favorite the entire collection is wonderfully mellow. I recommend it for for the mellow moods.
Reverent, beautiful.......2003-09-21
After criticizing Windham Hill in the past for often recycling the same songs over and over in various collections, I have to hand it to them with the new "Prayer" CD. It's a fine set of all-new acoustic versions of hymns or spiritual songs, plus a good number of original compositions. Producer Dawn Atkinson has done an excellent job of lining up a bunch of top-drawer people for "Prayer," and in working with the artists on the song selection.
Things get started with Tim Story's lovely piano rendition of the "Sanctus" from Faure's Requiem. The quiet and reflective tone of that piece carries throughout the CD. Other highlights include Paul McCandless's moving "Lord's Prayer" version and Steve Erquiaga's "Ave Maria." "Prayer" is a perfect disc for background listening if you're engaged in some activity that needs harmonious yet unobtrusive accompaniment.

Customer Reviews:
Introducing the Greatest Voice of All Time.......2007-03-13
A new generation of music lovers deserves to know, understand and appreciate the greatness of Mario Lanza. Five decades after his passing, millions of lovers of "grand voices" still are held in awe by the power, passion and beauty of his voice.
This selection of recordings has a number of fine selections that give a small "flavor" of his fantastic talent and skills. It is a good beginning for someone who wants to know "The American Caruso."
The Greatest Tenor of the 20th Century........2007-01-21
In a professional career that lasted just a bit over ten years Mario Lanza created more memorable recordings, broadcasts, concert perfomances and feature films than any other major vocalist in the classical and pop-jazz music genre. He was a man blessed with arguably the finest tenor voice in recorded music. Fans of Caruso, Pavarotti, Jan Peerce, Placido Domingo or Careras may argue that their tenor interpreted a particular aria better than anyone else but few if any can argue against the sheer beauty, power and emotion of Mario Lanza. He achieved worldwide success too fast and his penchant for the good life: wine, women and good food got the best of him in the end. It is so sad, when one contemplates Lanza's short but brilliant career and what might have been, that he was gone at age 38, an age when some tenors are just beginning to hit their stride. This album is a fine overview of some of his most memorable heavy classics as well as lighter operetta standards and showcases his voice so well. Nearly fifty years have transpired since his untimely death in 1959 and there is yet to appear on the scene a tenor with the power, charisma or sheer beauty of Lanza's voice. I highly recommend this album to the Lanza novice or those just starting their Opera CD collections.
Easy listening.......2006-02-27
I have always liked Mario Lanza and the album is wonderful and relaxing.
Lanza of the joyous voice!.......2005-07-14
This album has some really splendid songs, and yes, it's a good introduction to the King of the high last notes. I grew up with one of Lanza's albums and more or less learned to sing by singing along with his wonderful warm voice. What good energy he had... and too bad he died so young (sigh). It certainly lifts my spirits to listen to his music again and I hope anyone reading this will take a chance and get to know him too.
Not bad as an introduction to Lanza.......2001-11-13
I recommend this collection as a good starting point for those interested in this extraordinary tenor. It's not a complete representation of the man by any stretch of the imagination, but it includes a handful of unforgettable recordings that will make newcomers to Lanza sit up in astonishment.
Highlights include the immortal Serenade & Golden Days from The Student Prince, Beloved (from the film version of the Student Prince, and arguably Lanza's best English-language love song), Because You're Mine, If I Loved You, and the stirring Addio Alla Madre from Cavalleria Rusticana. If love songs seem a little over-represented at the expense of arias and (notably) Italian & Neapolitan Songs, then blame BMG for their habitual neglect of Lanza's more serious side. In any event, this is essentially a one-CD version of the three-CD set, The Mario Lanza Collection. All of the renditions are the same as on the earlier CD, as are the sound sources. With the exception of The Student Prince Serenade, most of the selections here have never sounded better.
Be aware, however, that several of the arias are in fact retakes of more familiar versions. Vesti La Giubba, for instance, is an alternate take from Lanza's May 1950 session, and although the tenor is in great voice, the orchestra lets him down on the climactic phrase by moving on before he has finished his High A on the word "infranto". The Flower Song is even more unrestrained than the familiar take - great fun, but not the kind of recording you'd want newcomers to Lanza to hear! (Lanza never quite "nailed" this aria, but his heart was in the right place.) La Donna E Mobile is the familiar 1950 version in the first half, but is replaced by an inferior retake in the second half, followed by an edited-in High B ending (on "pensier") from the original recording!
The only truly bad recording is the inexplicably popular With A Song In My Heart. Lanza is unfocused, and strains his way throughout the piece. Yours Is My Heart Alone is somewhat better, but is easily surpassed by the tenor's 1956 recording with the conductor Henri Rene (and currently unavailable on CD).
The "Greatest Hits" are here: the million-selling Be My Love, Loveliest Night of The Year and the aforementioned Because You're Mine. I have to confess to an aversion to the first two - Lanza was often a far better singer than these recordings suggest - but most fans, I'm sure, will continue to cherish them. Besides, what tenor since Lanza has ever sung Be My Love without straining his way through the wretched thing and then fudging the High C at the end? Lanza made it his own, and to be fair to the song, it is actually a very difficult piece to pull off, as Messrs Domingo, Carreras and Leech will no doubt attest. But that was also one of Lanza's most under-appreciated strengths - he made everything sound so easy. Listeners accustomed to the laborious efforts of most present-day tenors will be astounded by the freshness, ease, and sheer bravado of these performances.

Superb Christmas Album.......2007-02-19
Mario Lanza infuses his characteristic beautiful vocal intensity into this collection of carols and Christmas songs.
The result is an outstanding album which will bring a lump to your throat and tears to your eye.
The recordings are old, but the Lanza magic makes this album a must-buy
Love Mario Lanza.......2007-01-28
I love Mario Lanza. He is in my top favs. I have wanted this album for ages and it is just as great as I knew it would be. I'll be back to buy more of Mario Lanza.
Mario Lanza - fantastic.......2007-01-15
Fantastic voice, wonderful classic Christmas songs. My all-time favourite version of O Holy Night - spine tingling.
Christmas Hymns & Carols: You Do Something to Me.......2007-01-12
Wonderful songs, great selections of songs sung by the greatest singer, Mario Lanza.
Pure hymnal power........2006-12-20
I have just spent the past six hours listening to snippets of every Christmas CD that I can find on Amazon, and this is the best by far. It's the purest rendition of the best Christmas hymns that are sung in church on Christmas Eve. No inane flourishes, no ignorant alterations, no arrogant amendments, just pure hymnal power. Don't agree? Type "christmas" in the Amazon music search box, listen to all the renditions of all the classic hymns such as "O Come All Ye Faithful" and when you are done you cannot but agree that Mario Lanza is not surpassed.
Update: I am now listening to the full CD and it is better even than I had hoped for. The beauty of Lanza's voice brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.

Tasteful and elegant........2004-09-27
I am a DJ and ordered this CD when a couple asked me to play music for the wedding ceremony as well. Since it was an intimate setting, I thought a simple piano arrangement of the traditional "Bridal Chorus" and "Wedding March" would work better than full orchestra versions. This CD worked beautifully.

After searching all over Palm Beach County for a suitable CD for my daughter's wedding I came upon this one and really did not hold out much hope, but ordered it strictly because of the reviews. It is beautiful for the person who is looking for a more pure piano sound, free of all the other "stuff". Very well done, something for everyone. Worth the price and then some.
The best wedding album!.......2003-11-16
My husband and I used this CD when our church pianist moved a week before our wedding. It was beautiful, and we got many compliments on it. It's much more reliable than live music, and just as nice. I would highly recommend it.
I Have Several Originals of this CD.......2002-11-14
I am a professional dj owner and heard his music. I assist 100+ brides on their music choices and this CD is absolutely the best for a bride that needs piano solo music for the guests entering the ceremony (prelude) through the ceremony ending. It is a must have. Also in combination with this CD, is his piano versions of love songs "HONEYMOON SUITE" (My Heart Will Go On - Is The First Track). It is classic, clean and used over & over.
Beautiful music for a beautiful wedding!.......2002-02-25
When my husband and I were planning our wedding, we wanted beautiful piano music, so we bought "The Ultimate Wedding Collection." It really made the wedding even more romantic, and now I listen to the CD at work and at home. On our anniversary, we often play the CD while we enjoy a quiet candlelight dinner at home. Now my father-in-law is getting remarried, and they are going to use the same CD! It's great for all brides, young and not-so-young.

Album Description
The 7th solo album from singer/songwriter Colin Hay (from Men at Work). This album shows Colin Hay at the top of his game. It is a most compelling work from a brilliant songwriter. The album has a full electric sound with lush string and horn arrangements. Undoubtedly his best album to date.
Customer Reviews:
Colin Hay is awesome!.......2006-05-11
My husband turned me on to Colin Hay as he and his best friend from high school were big "Men at Work" fans and subsequently followed his solo career. "Company of Strangers and "How Long Will It Last?" are beautiful, beautiful songs. I love the strings in "Company of Strangers"; it's a mesmerizing song. Of course, the lyrics on this CD are fantastic, as always, especially in "How Long Will It Last?"
This is my favorite CD right now. Buy it. You will NOT be disappointed. All of the songs are good. (The only one I skip is "Lucky Bastard" because I listen to the CD in the van with my 6-year-old and 4-year-old sons. They love Colin Hay and know the lyrics!
Incidentally, my husband and I were fortunate to have seen Colin Hay in concert at a club in Denver this past year. Colin is an OUTSTANDING performer -- funny, too! I can't wait to see him again!
Colin Hay at Largo In Los Angeles.......2006-04-09
Just saw Colin tonight in the tiny club Largo on Fairfax in Los Angeles where he is a egular since he lives here - He began the set acoustic and then brought on four others, including his wife. The set lasted about 2 hours and was filled with Colin's humor and an absolutely amazing array of his solo work and some MAW singles as well. I hadn't purchased any of his solo work, but after tonight, they are all part of my collection - "Company" being the favorite since he played many of the songs found here -
As Always, Good Stuff.......2005-12-30
You may find this one a bit sleepy at first, but stick with it. It's more mid- and slow-tempo than previous Hay albums like "Looking For Jack," "Wayfaring Sons," and "Topanga." On the first pass, only "Small Town Big Hell," "No Win Situation," "Don't Wait Up," and the haunting title track really jumped out at me. However, if you give it a few tries, songs like "I Got Woken Up," "Dear J," "How Long Will it Last" and the closer really start to grow on you. I started out mildly disappointed and ended up thinking it's among the best work he's ever done. It also features the third recording thus far of "Beautiful World," this one virtually indistinguishable from the version on "Man @ Work." It's a gorgeous song, though, so fine by me. All in all, a very worthy buy for fans of this underrated artist.
I provide the following as a checklist for Colin Completists who are stymied and frustrated by the lack of availability of his solo albums. If you wanna have it all, this is what you gotta get (wherever you can get it):
- LOOKING FOR JACK [1986, not commercially available]
- WAYFARING SONS [1990, not commercially available]
- PEAKS & VALLEYS [1992, available on import]
- TOPANGA [1994, available but expensive]
- TRANSCENDENTAL HIGHWAY [1998, available]
- GOING SOMEWHERE [2000, available]
- COMPANY OF STRANGERS [2002, available]
- MAN @ WORK [2003, available]
Good luck!
Colin Hay is Amazing!.......2005-08-19
There is so much to say about this extremely talented artist, but the other reviews have done such a fine job in doing so. Along with Jeff Lynne (of ELO), Colin Hay is one of the most talented, yet under-appreciated musicians of our time. And, this album is truly one of his finest compilations. Colin is one of the few artists that can bring me to tears with the beauty of his music (in a weak moment). :) Order this CD while you can and try to see Colin in concert. You'll see exactly what I mean.
colin is brilliant.......2004-04-03
